Second generation identity

In this field study, social, cultural, political identity and sense of belonging to Turks in Sweden, to which degree they are integrated into the country they live in, their perception about their homeland, and whether there is a difference between the generations about this subject were assessed in line with the data obtained in the research. The data obtained in the field study carried out in Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö cities, the most densely inhabited cities by Turks, and the analysis of the data was made using SPSS 18 programme. When the data obtained are analysed, it is revealed that Turks in Sweden care for the identity formation representing their homeland and its continuation in socio-cultural terms, and they generally tend to be conservative in this sense. Nevertheless, it is also understood that the contact of Turks in Sweden with Turkish culture and Turkey is gradually decreasing (when it compared to the past). This also reveals the differences between the generations. When that 3rd generation young Turks born in Sweden came to Turkey, they generally do not feel like in their homeland, but in a foreign country or a country they visit as guests, and this also related to this kind of change. While negativities occur at the point of active participation of the Turks in Sweden in the political system in this country, that they are generally in a positive level at the point of corporate integration is another result arising out of the data obtained in the field study.

This paper outlines the academic debates on the topic of migrant and refugee integration. Given the diversity of migratory statuses, experiences and conditions around the world, we argue that the concept of integration needs to be carefully unpacked and contextualized. In rethinking integration, we contend that integration is not just about macro-level policy-making decisions, meso-level implementation or political discourses on these. A conception of integration must also include the perspective of those that are being told that they have to integrate. We therefore pay particular attention to the aspirations, experiences and actions of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers (MRAs), whether “integration” is a concept they think about, how “integration” is interpreted by these targeted subjects and how the diverse nature of migrants and their multiple characteristics shape integration opportunities and challenges.

Gli effetti delle politiche d'integrazione dei migranti di prima generazione possono essere valutati anche attraverso il grado d'inserimento sociale dei loro figli.
Il volume presenta risultati di una ricerca quantitativa, cofinanziata dal MIUR e dall'Assessorato alle Politiche Sociali della Regione Marche, volta a indagare gli ostacoli e le opportunità che si presentano nel percorso di integrazione delle seconde generazioni di immigrati.
Poiché in Italia la presenza di studenti di origine straniera nella scuola è in costante crescita, il tema dell'integrazione scolastica delle seconde generazioni è quello maggiormente preso in considerazione nelle ricerche. La scuola infatti ha un ruolo cruciale per l'integrazione ma è al contempo anche lo specchio e il potenziale propulsivo di ulteriori forme di discriminazione, con il pericolo di marginalità socio-culturale, insuccesso scolastico e devianza.
Il testo è idealmente suddiviso in due parti.
Nella prima sezione vengono presentati contributi di carattere internazionale al fine di offrire un confronto più ampio sulle forme d'integrazione delle seconde generazioni in vari contesti. I saggi di A. Portes sugli USA, di M. Crul e J. Schneider su Germania e Paesi Bassi e di R. Aparicio sulla Spagna costituiscono un prezioso punto di partenza comparativo.
La seconda sezione affronta il tema dei figli degli stranieri nel nostro paese - fenomeno sociale recentissimo - cercando di cogliere analogie e differenze con altre esperienze più consolidate. L. Terzera pone dunque l'attenzione su una rilevante indagine svolta in tutta Italia, V. Lannutti e L. Ruggeri su una ricerca realizzata nella Regione Marche in cui i principali argomenti presi in considerazione, frutto dell'intervista di 874 alunni frequentanti Istituti secondari di secondo grado delle province di Ancona e Macerata, sono stati: la struttura familiare e la condizione socio-economica della famiglia d'appartenenza, le reti amicali e gli stili di vita, le prospettive di studio e di lavoro, il tempo libero.
Il testo si rivolge a studenti, ricercatori e operatori che per ragioni di studio e di lavoro si confrontano con il tema delle seconde generazioni, tema le cui implicazioni sulla società italiana hanno appena cominciato a svelarsi.

Mixed-marriage relationships deserve a special attention for their role in dialect construction and identity. The investigation of cross-dialectal and cross-linguistic marriages explores how dialect practices and choices are negotiated between partners and toward the children. The aim of the book is to propose some results to debate about this theme and to exchange information from different disciplines and showing cases both from the past and the present.

This paper explores the everyday anti-racist practices of the female children of immigrants in Italy. We analyse two case studies: first, a group of Muslim young women in Italy who have publicly re-appropriated what is popularly known as ‘Islamic fashion’; and second, a group of young Afro-Italian women who meet both online and offline to share resources about the care of ‘natural’ Afro-textured hair. We argue that transnational feminist analysis can shed light on the complex ways that aesthetics and the female body are implicated in struggles for social and legal recognition in Italy among the so-called second generation.
