Roman Oriental Cults

The aim of the article is to cast a light on the nature of the cult of Mithras in Central Italy, focusing on the administrative division of Roman Etruria. Indeed, the Regio VII has emerged as a privileged territory to explore different aspects of the cult, due to the great variety of its artefacts.
Hence, a model of diffusion of the Mithraic marble religious artifacts across the region and through the Roman main viability is presented, highlighting its dependence on public officials, responsible for both spreading government-endorsed iconographies and managing the Imperial marble industry.
Consequently, the active role played by the Imperial administration in promoting the Mithras worship in Etruria is discussed, as well as the cult diffusion among the lower classes and (by the Middle/Late Empire) the aristocratic élites.
The last phases of the cult within the region are also explored, showing how the Mithraic spelaea were dismissed according to a variety of different modalities during the first decades of the 5th century AD, ranging from violent destruction to pacific abandonment of their structures.

Antički orijentalni kultovi na tlu današnje Bosne i Hercegovine su ostavili
dosta svojih materijalnih potvrda od kojih se najviše trebaju izdvojiti kultovi Mitre i Atisa.
Pored prethodno navedenih, imamo potvrde i ostalih orijentalnih kultova poput Izidinog,
Serapisovog, Sabazijevog, te zajednice Jupitera Dolihena i Kastora. Ovi kultovi su nam
ostavili materijalnu dimenziju poznavanja istih, međutim se danas susrećemo sa problemima
poput nedostatka okolnosti nalaza, nedostatka konteksta, a postoje i slučajevi kada ni mjesto
nalaza nije poznato, što nam u velikom dijelu otežava poznavanje nematerijalne dimenzije
održavanja antičkih orijentalnih kultova. U radu su opisane prakse i spomeničke cjeline
vezane za navedene orijentalne kultove koji su se održavali u Bosni i Hercegovini. Cilj rada je
da potakne i druge istraživače u svrhu istraživanja nematerijalne kulture i tradicije antičkog
stanovništva današnje Bosne i Hercegovine. U radu su opisani spomenici, navedeni lokaliteti,
te su predočene slike spomenika koji su povezani sa antičkim orijentalnim kultovima.

На територији општине Смедеревска Паланка до сада нису вршена
систематска истраживања локалитета из периода доминације Римског царства.
Међутим, спорадична открића упућују нас на чињеницу да је ова област (залеђе
лимеса) била подједнако активна у том периоду. Овај рад представља два репрезентативна налаза из античке колекције Народног музеја у Смедеревској Паланци.
Оба предмета повезују прикази представе коњаника: једна је на копчи за појас, а
друга на кружној оловној плочици сачуваној у два фрагмента. Претпоставка на
основу аналогија је да су оба предмета носиоци приказа касноантичких култова:
Трачког коњаника и Подунавских коњаника. На овој врсти налаза можемо видети
суптилне промене које су се десиле у римском пантеону услед локалних утицаја, као
и вештог занатства које је поједноставило начин комуникације у војној и верској
служби.

Thie contribution deals with Rome’s urban landscape as it is presented within the Late Antique Actus of St. Sylvester, a legend concerning Christianity’s triumph in the metropolis. In the text, a number of locations can be recognized, presenting the cityscape as structured on a topographical dichotomy between the Lateran and the Capitoline Hill, respectively recontextualized as quintessential pivots of Polytheism and Christianity.
Reprising an old theory formulated in the ’30s, the present study focuses on some references that the Actus makes to specific Pre-Christian cults when describing the liar of a dragon on the Capitolium, highlighting how they can be read as explicit references to the Mithras worship.
The archaeological record is accordingly explored, highlighting the rooting of such cult on the hill, confirmed by several dedicatory inscriptions and by one of the largest known Mithraic reliefs.
Ultimately, the article argues that the practice of the Mithras cult on the Capitoline Hill could have enjoyed such high prestige among the Late Antique upper classes to foster, at least during the 6th century, the perception of the local spelaea as particularly well-fitting settings for the abode of a monster symbolizing the Early Medieval concept of “Paganism” as a whole.

O presente estudo, que teve como ponto de partida uma coleta de dados prosopográficos do culto a Ísis, transformou-se em uma pesquisa histórico-religiosa sobre a realidade religiosa envolvida na crença e veneração dos deuses egípcios, Serápis e Ísis, no âmbito romano, analisando-se em especial indícios e manifestações destas crenças na cidade de Roma, onde estes cultos alcançaram seu pleno desenvolvimento no séc. II d.C. O estudo engloba interpretações sobre o perfil dos seguidores e seguidoras destas divindades, evidenciando a singular participação de libertos, escravos e sobretudo de mulheres, além da dimensão étnica presente. Práticas cultuais, expectativas e concepções associadas a estas duas divindades são estudadas, por meio de uma combinação entre fontes coptas, gregas e latinas, aportadas pela tradição literária, papirológica e epigráfica. Articulam-se bilhetes oraculares e papiros mágicos gregos; inscrições isíacas e serápicas e inscrições gregas encontradas em Roma.

Cette étude, ayant pour point de départ un recueil des données prosopographiques du culte d'Isis, s'est transformée en une recherche historico-religieuse sur la réalité religieuse impliquée dans la croyance et dans la vénération des dieux égyptiens Sarapis et Isis en contexte romain. Nous analysons, en particulier, les indices et les manifestations de ces croyances dans la ville de Rome, où ces cultes ont atteint leur plein développement au cours du IIIe siècle après Jésus-Christ. L'étude comprend des interprétations sur le profil des adeptes de ces divinités, mettant en évidence la participation des affranchis, des esclaves et surtout des femmes, au-delà de la dimension ethnique, qui a été également analysée. Les pratiques cultuelles, les attentes et les concepts liés à ces deux divinités sont nos objets d'étude, par le biais d'une combinaison des sources coptes, grecques et latines, transmises par la tradition littéraire, épigraphique et papyrologique. Nous avons associé, d'une part, des billets oraculaires et des papyrus magiques et, de l'autre, des inscriptions isiaques et sérapiques et, encore, des inscriptions grecques trouvées à Rome. Abstract: This study, that had as starting point a recollection of prosopographic data of the Isis cult, has been transformed into a historical-religious research about the religious reality concerned with the belief and veneration of the Egyptian gods, Serapis and Isis, in the Roman context, where their worship reached its apex during the second cent. d.C. Besides ethnic aspects, this study encompasses interpretations on the profile of the followers of these deities, highlighting the participation of freedman, slaves and principally women. One studies here the worship activities, as well as the expectations and conceptions associated with these two deities, through the association of Coptic, Greek and Latin sources, present in literary, papyrologic and epigraphic traditions, using different typologies of documents, as oracular coupons and magical papyri, Serapic and Isiac inscriptions and Greek inscriptions found in Rome.

La collana krisis/crisi si richiama alla tradizione storicista della Scuola di studi storico-religiosi fondata da Raffaele Pettazzoni. Il raddoppiamento nel titolo sta ad indicare soprattutto i punti semantici di partenza e di arrivo di un termine che è entrato di diritto a far parte del "vocabolario della modernità", secondo la nota definizione di R. Koselleck. Il presente volume, il quarto della collana, raccoglie e amplia i contributi presentati durante i lavori del panel "Santo" e "Santità" nelle civiltà classiche e nella tarda Antichità pagana e cristiana, organizzato dai curatori per la seconda edizione dei Cantieri dell'agiografia (Roma 17 gennaio 2018), nell'ambito delle iniziative dell'Associazione italiana per lo studio della santità, dei culti e dell'agiografia (AISSCA). Nel vocabolario contemporaneo santo e santità sono termini categoriali che comprendono per estensione analogica una serie di fenomeni non necessariamente di carattere religioso. Santo/Santa è prima di tutto chi attraverso un consapevole comportamento ha superato le crisi del quotidiano/mondano/secolare/profano e attraverso il suo modo di vivere esemplare può aiutare gli altri a superare le proprie in determinati contesti e specifiche congiunture. Qual è stato, però, il punto di partenza, quali sono state le tappe, le deviazioni e i ripensamenti del lungo percorso che ha portato questi termini categoriali a costituirsi come tali? E ancora: ha un senso parlare di santo e santità al di fuori della fede cristiana cattolica o, se si preferisce, è ammissibile utilizzare questi termini in contesti culturali altri? I contributi qui riuniti si propongono non tanto di offrire a queste tematiche una risposta esauriente volta a ricevere un unanime consenso, quanto piuttosto di esporre, talvolta in maniera problematica, i risultati degli itinerari di ricerca di specialisti che hanno affrontato tali "sfide" e hanno accettato l'invito a condividerle con la comunità scientifica.

ROMAN CULTS OF EASTERN ORIGIN IN DACIA

RESUMEN

El autor aborda un amplísimo tema no tratado en su conjunto hasta la fecha por la historiografía rumana, ni por la española ni tampoco por la historiografía europea en general, cubriendo un vacío existente en una larga serie de estudios internacionales dedicados a diferentes cultos orientales y provincias del Imperio Romano (series EPRO-RGRW, de Brill). Se presenta en primer lugar una introducción metodológica y un estado de la cuestión, secundados por una exposición sintética del contexto geográfico e histórico provincial. La parte central de la tesis está dedicada al estudio de la difusión de estos cultos en las tres provincias dácicas, dedicando diferentes capítulos al Mitraísmo, a los cultos sirios, a los cultos minorasiáticos y a los cultos egipcios, donde se analizan la distribución de los monumentos epigráficos, escultóricos y los templos de cada culto, la cronología de la difusión, la onomástica y el origen étnico de los dedicantes, y también su distribución social, estableciendo como categorías los diferentes ordines sociales y también las ocupaciones. Además, incluye un capítulo dedicado al problema de la identificación de Sol Invictus y otro en el que se analiza en conjunto la difusión de los cultos. Una tercera parte, más interpretativa, se centra sobre la relación del culto imperial y los cultos de origen oriental, y sobre las formas de integración y de control social e ideológico observadas. Después de las conclusiones en español, se incluye un amplio resumen y las conclusiones íntegras en rumano. El primer volumen se completa con una rica bibliografía, listados de imágenes y abreviaturas. Por su parte, el segundo volumen comprende un extenso y muy completo corpus epigráfico, complementado por diversas listas de concordancia, abreviaturas bibliográficas y un extenso apéndice de fotografías y dibujos de inscripciones de gran calidad, con una lista que señala sus lugares de procedencia. Finalmente, se incluyen unos útiles y muy amplios índices analíticos de ambos volúmenes.

ABSTRACT

The author addresses a very broad topic not discussed as a whole so far by the Romanian historiography, nor the Spanish, nor the European historiography in general, covering a gap in a long series of international studies devoted to different eastern cults and provinces of the Roman Empire (EPRO-RGRW series of Brill). It first presents a methodological introduction and a statement on the matter, supported by a synthetic exposition of the geographical and historical context. The central part of the thesis is devoted to the study of the spread of these cults in the three Dacian provinces, devoting several chapters to Mithraism, to Syrian cults, to the cults of Asia Minor and to Egyptian cults. At them, the author analyzes the distribution of epigraphic monuments, sculptures and temples of each cult, the chronology of the spread, onomastics and ethnicity of dedicants, and also its social distribution, establishing as categories the different social ordines and occupations. It also includes a chapter devoted to the problem of identification of Sol Invictus and another in which we analyze together the spread of cults. A third, more interpretive part, focuses on the relationship of the Imperial Cult and the cults of eastern origin and on the ways of integration and social and ideological control so far observed. After the conclusions in Spanish, an extensive summary and conclusions in Romanian are included. The first volume is completed with a rich bibliography, lists of images and abbreviations. For its part, the second volume includes an extensive and very complete epigraphic corpus, complemented by different matching lists, bibliographical abbreviations and an extensive appendix of high quality photographs and drawings, with a list that indicates their places of origin. Finally, an useful and large analytical index of both volumes is added.

This paper critically reviews research into the cults of Mater Magna and Attis in Hispania, from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day, focusing on the processes underlying their establishment and on the agents that introduced them into the Iberian Peninsula. In contrast to the eager document collection and the Cumontian hermeneutics of the ‘oriental’ cults that have dominated historiography, the research questions posed here are tackled from the perspective of the new theoretical trends of individualization and agency. In concert with these, a new reading of the most ancient Metroac inscriptions from the the Iberian Peninsula is suggested.

The cult of Jupiter Heliopolitanus spread from ancient Heliopolis, modern day Baalbek in Lebanon, to the western provinces of the Roman Empire in the first half of the 2nd century. The cult image of the god is known only from the Roman Imperial period, for there are no depictions dating to the period before the first half of the 1st century B. C. Siscia is known to have been popular with “Orientals”, and many found their new home in this Pannonian transportation and trade hub. Evidence of the cults of Mithra, Cybele, Attis, Isis, Serapis, Jupiter Amon and the Thracian horseman have all been found here in both epigraphic sources and archaeological materials. One monument, the altar of the beneficiarius consularis Lucius Virilius Pupus, testifies to the cult of Jupiter Heliopolitanus in Siscia. At the end of the votive inscription, the dedicant specified that pigs are not to be sacrificed on this altar. Such a formula is unique when it comes to epigraphic sources. This altar is the only known monument from the Roman Imperial period on which we find a ban on sacrificing pigs. It is also the only monument that provides certain information about the practices of the cult of Jupiter Heliopolitanus. The prohibition against pigs and pig taboos are well known to have been widespread among the people of “Oriental” origin at that time. Pigs were considered impure, both literally and symbolically. Since we know very little about the rituals and cult practices of the Heliopolitan cult, this information raises the question of whether this “Oriental” tradition was an official cult policy. If it was, what would it mean in terms of determining the “oriental” in “oriental” cults? Was the cult of Jupiter Heliopolitanus more “Roman” in nature? This paper aims to contribute to solving the problem of continuity of “Oriental” cults and reinterpreting the process of Romanization of deities of “Oriental” origin.

La Sylloge Gemmarum Gnosticarum, parte II, si inserisce in un progetto di ricerca più ampio fortemente voluto da Attilio Mastrocinque e di questo progetto essa rappresenta, per così dire, la seconda "tappa". Infatti siamo di fronte alla seconda parte di un'opera pensata in più volumi dei quali proprio il primo, (la Sylloge Gemmarum Gnosticarum, parte I) assume valore prodromico per l'intero "piano editoriale", e non solo per la qualità del materiale raccolto, ma anche per gli studi qui confluiti. Infatti, se da una parte la SGG 1 ha messo a disposizione degli specialisti un ragguardevole numero di gemme "gnostiche" contenute nelle pubblicazioni antiquarie, dall'altra ha dato vita ad un team di specialisti che hanno curato le varie sezioni e che hanno contribuito ad una messa a punto storico-religiosa di uno degli specimena del mondo Tardo Antico qual'è, appunto, il fenomeno della magia.

Il presente volume, il terzo della collana, raccoglie i contributi presentati nel 2015 al Convegno Internazionale “Crisi e identità religiosa: Classicità e Tardo Antico / Crisis and Religious Identity: Classical and Late Antiquity”, che si è tenuto presso il Dipartimento di Lettere e Beni Culturali dell’Università della Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”. Oggi che l’identità non è più concepita come una sorta di dato naturale ma si va configurando piuttosto come una costruzione culturale costantemente rimodulata in funzione di particolari esigenze e specifici contesti storici, appare chiaro come essa non possa che nascere dalla crisi, intesa quale necessità  di “scelta” fra più alternative in una situazione complessa in cui il tempo stringe e occorre individuare momenti e modi giusti per intervenire. La percezione di un intimo legame tra identità e crisi è alla base della presente ricerca che analizza, secondo i rigorosi criteri scientifici della Storia delle religioni, casi paradigmatici tratti dall’antichità classica e dall’epoca tardo-antica, per verificare in che modo episodi di crisi in ambito religioso possano essersi originati, aggravati o risolti a seguito dell’inserimento di un principio identitario.

Durante la campagna di scavi 2014 a Sibari, in località Casa Bianca, è stata rinvenuta una statuetta di figura maschile acefala, vestita in abiti orientali. La piccola scultura presenta una serie d’interessanti caratteristiche tecniche e, soprattutto, un’iconografia particolare caratteriz- zata dalla presenza di un unico attributo: un elemento verticale lungo la schiena, che ha l’aspetto di un grande sacco chiuso e che allo stato attuale sembra non trovare confronto in alcuna scultura nota. L’oggetto è risultato, però, molto simile a quello rappresentato su un mosaico da Puteoli e su un minuto frammento di affresco, probabilmente pompeiano. Questi due confronti, alcune suggestioni letterarie e considerazioni relative al contesto di rinvenimento della scultura copiense ne hanno suggerito una possibile identificazione.

This Roman settlement, located on the territory near Sočanica, was parтly explored around the 1950’s. Systematic excavations, headed by E.Češkov, resulted in quite a large number of mobile and immobile finds, helped to form a clearer picture about the history, economic system and urban layout of the settlement known as Municipium DD. Due to a series of circumstances, the explorations at Sočanica were stopped, leaving unanswered numerous questions that Češkov had posed. With this work we want to draw attention to a series of specifications that are characteristic for  this location. Particular attention has been devoted to the temple of Antinous and to the complex of  edifices that had surrounded it. This engineering construction has been analized in the context of numerous architectural  undertakings of  Hadrian’s times. We have tried  to reconstruct some aspects of Antinous cult in the Municipium DD on the basis of the epigraphic material and the situation  on the site itself.
    Apart  from Lanuvium, Carnuntum and Hadrian’s  villa in Tivoli, where this cult has been  epigraphically  confirmed, the temples  consecrated to Antinous are rare in the western part of the Roman Empire. Judging by  the spatial  configuration, the complex of edifices  that constitute the temple  as well as  the edifices that surround the temple bear certain analogy with the sacred complexes of emperor  Hadrian on the European territory of Greece. In Municipium DD there occurred the binding of the cult  of Antinous, in the form which it was practised  in the West, with the cult practices conducted in Greece. While in the western parts the followers of the cult belonged to the circle of Emperor’s closest associates, imperial slaves and freed slaves, in the eastern parts of the empire the initiators were senators of Greek origin who in this way wanted to show their devotion to the Emperor. Latest explorations have shown a possible link between the cult of Antinous and the cult of  Asclepious, thus including the Roman settlements of  Sočanica  in the ancient settlement of a particular cult  character  that represents, at the same time, the most western part of the Roman Empire, where this syncretism has been noted.
