Rococo

Testo di conferenza sul Settecento estense tenuta a Modena nell'aprile 2016.  Il "Grande Ospedale Civile" o "Ospitale degl'Infermi" sorse fra il 1753 e il 1762 per volontà del duca Francesco III d'Este. Governatore di Lombardia per conto di Maria Teresa d'Austria, Francesco aderì alla politica illuministica di quell'imperatrice promuovendo imprese urbanistiche ed edilizie rivolte al "pubblico bene". Fra queste, spicca appunto l'imponente struttura ospedaliera, costruita sul lato nord del vasto piazzale di porta Sant'Agostino; ideata dal capo mastro modenese Antonio Socci, vice architetto ducale, nel 1753 era stata rivista e riqualificata a livello progettuale da Alfonso Torregiani, personalità fra le più note dell'architettura barocchetta nella Bologna e nelle Legazioni sulla metà del Settecento. Il grandioso cantiere è dunque uno degli episodi salienti della riconfigurazione di Modena come capitale di un governo "illuminato", sotto il ducato di Francesco III e poi del figlio Ercole III; e il fabbro Giambattista Malagoli (Modena 1729-1796), la cui lunga attività abbraccia un cinquantennio, emerge come uno degli artefici di questa renovatio urbis; in particolare, del Grande Ospedale Civile è l' artefice del complesso dei serramenti metallici. Famoso a livello italiano, Malagoli è stato spesso definito "fabbro ducale". Ma se molteplici furono i suoi interventi nei tanti cantieri estensi-il Grande Albergo dei Poveri, ora Palazzo dei Musei, ultimato nel 1771, il Palazzo dell'Università degli Studi a cui attende dal 1772 al '77, il Teatro Fisico, l'Orto Botanico, la Darsena sul Naviglio a cui lavora dal 1775 al '76, il Giardino Ducale, la Biblioteca Estense…-frequentissime e ancora in opera le sue realizzazione per la committenza aristocratica. Con eccezionale ricchezza di creazioni ornamentali, Malagoli attinge ai repertori d'ispirazione botanica e anche marina tipici del gusto rocaille e barocchetto, ma sempre componendo l'ornato entro l'architettura del telaio, in un discorso di sobria e raffinata misura. Per il cantiere del "Grande Ospedale Civile", i cui lavori iniziarono il 2 aprile del 1753 per concludersi il 29 dicembre del 1762, Malagoli produce tutti i serramenti metallici. Così i due fastosi sovrapporta che coronano gli archi dei due ingressi nella lunga facciata sul piazzale; così le grate delle ventuno finestre, ciascuna sormontata da un elegantissimo ornamento: una coppia di volute affrontate e convergenti al centro in una sorta di cartiglio, che pare germinare in foglie e boccioli, componendo un timpano dalle linee leggere e aggraziate. E' la medesima sintassi compositiva che ritorna nella lunga cancellata che Malagoli, nel 1759, innalzò nell'atrio dell'Ospedale, dove si coniuga la funzionalità all'eleganza formale, l'utilità al decoro, la robustezza alla levità delle linee.

Faute d'une étude profonde sur le rococo dans le domaine de l'orfèvrerie 'belge - except un article du professeur Pierre Colman publié en 1991 - ce n'est pas évident d'évaluer les origines et la diffusion du rococo aux Pays-Bas Méridionaux. Est-ce que c'est du rococo tardif, provincial ou original? Des recherches/études récent(e)s ont emané(e)s/relevé(e)s des résultats primaires sur la formation et les sources d'orfèvres 'belges' à l'un côté et la distribution de leur oeuvre à l'autre côté. Qui sont les orfèvres qui travaillent au dernier goût? Est-ce qu'il y a une discrépantion entre l'orfèvrerie de table plutôt traditionel et les jolités ou objets de vertu modernes souvent importés?

Quel sont les liens entre Jean-Henry Liénard, Petrus Simon Hoffinger et Jean-Baptiste Verberckt à Anvers, Lambertus Millé à Bruxelles, Franciscus Nijs à Tamise et Antoine-Constant de Bettignies à Mons à l'un côté et Jacques Verberckt, sculpteur de la cour française, les recueils d'orfèvrerie de Germain, Meissonnier et Habermann publiés à Paris et Augsbourg, le magasin à la Mode de Paris à Anvers, les marchands d'estampes et graveurs comme Fruijtiers et Heylbrouck à l'autre côté?

Contrairement à ce qui est traditionnellement écrit, la période de la Régence ne fut pas une période de « belle endormie » pour le château de Saint-Cloud. Les gazettes montrent en effet que les fêtes, comme au Palais-Royal à Paris, s’y succédèrent. Pour les accueillir, le Régent put profiter du château mais surtout du parc. A la fin de sa vie, il pensa même y conduire d’importants travaux. La mort du prince empêcha leur mise en œuvre, mais ils sont connus par des dessins de l’architecte Oppenord.

Trata de uma característica peculiar dos templos barrocos do Estado de São Paulo: a decoração parietal executada em parte dessas igrejas no período eclético. Para tanto, traça um histórico da formação da Capitania, depois Província e finalmente do Estado de São Paulo para compreender a evolução morfológica, artística e tipológica dos remanescentes barrocos urbanos dessa unidade da Federação. Aborda, desde o século XVII até o início do século XX, os ciclos econômicos que se sucederam, desde a cana-de-açúcar, as bandeiras e o tropeirismo, até os novos ciclos canavieiro e cafeeiro. Analisa como o enriquecimento trazido pelo café, os investimentos, as novas tecnologias e técnicas construtivas e a influência dos imigrantes influenciaram na arquitetura, passando do barroco para o neoclassicismo e deste para o ecletismo, e como parte das antigas igrejas que se mantiveram foram adaptadas ao novo gosto eclético recebendo pinturas em suas paredes. O trabalho ressalta ainda a importância de se aprofundar os estudos desses templos para ampliar o entendimento e garantir a preservação de tais bens

Fra il 1741 e il 1743 l'antico palazzo del marchese Ippolito Levizzani, sul corso Canalchiaro a Modena, era oggetto di un profondo rifacimento su progetto del noto architetto Alfonso Torreggiani. Mentre la facciata, di sobria eleganza sul nobile portico a colonne marmoree, si è conservata sino ai giorni odierni, il cortile subì in passato notevoli alterazioni, tuttavia mantenendo importanti testimonianze del gusto rococò. Lo scalone monumentale venne invece distrutto nel 1925; una pianta dell'edificio di quell'anno documenta l'originalità della sua soluzione architettonica, che ne faceva una suggestiva "macchina" scenografica.

Japanese contemporary culture, including fashion, has increasingly gained popularity outside Japan, making it a timely topic for both scholarly and wider publics. Most current studies of popular culture focuses on manga, anime, and other such forms of visual culture, and dress and design studies are also emerging as a rapidly growing field. Building on the works of McVeigh (2000), Miller (2006), Slade (2010) and Steele (2010), this book addresses this new interest in an innovative fashion, expanding the significance of dress and delving into a wide range of examples from films, magazines, music videos and literature. By connecting diverse topic areas including dress, gender, media and cultural studies, Japanese Fashion Cultures analyzes the relationship of fashion aesthetics and gender identity within an increasingly interconnected, transnational world.
The book pays particular attention to the relationship of past and present. It examines contemporary Japanese fashion trends that adopt and restyle European historical clothing forms: the Edwardian dandy style, Victorian little girls’ dresses, and the Rococo and Romantic dress typical of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Japanese fashion culture actively promoted European clothing styles both politically and aesthetically, particularly since the country’s re-engagement with Euro-America in 1868. Throughout this book, I refer to the theory of “format” and “product” articulated by cultural sociologist Keiko Okamura (2003) where a cultural form, in this case Euro-American clothing styles, can be seen as a “format” when accepted globally. This standardized “format” becomes a carrier of the locality of cultures, allowing its “local” characteristics to be visible, measurable, and comparable with that of other cultures. Through this theoretical idea, I explain complex cultural theory using compelling examples. For instance, differences in preferred modes of masculinity and fashionability in Japan and Euro-America will be explained via garments and advertisement campaigns of Dolce and Gabbana. This process will therefore reveal the characteristics both universal and culturally specific to the Japanese context, including the ways in which Japanese men and women engage with fashion today. This poses a challenge to a widely held, often Eurocentric notion that Japanese men and women simply desire to imitate their Euro-American counterparts.

Japanese Fashion Cultures provides comprehensive insights into representations of clothes and gender in a society still poorly understood by outsiders. I dispel the popular misconception that Japan approves of gender inequalities and that women still occupy inferior social positions to men, expressed also in clothing. I argue that using the lens of fashion reveals the complexities of gender relations in Japan. Four contemporary case studies position the argument: young men’s fashion magazines, female performers’ use of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice” in music video, “Lolita” fashion and Tetsuya Nakashima’s film Shimotsuma monogatari (Kamikaze Girls, 2004), and the continuing remarking of “Ivy-League” style in Japan. These four examples are notable for their adoption of historic European and American clothing forms. Their relatively “mainstream” stature in contemporary Japanese culture comes with a “twist” or unconventional characteristics. The “mainstream” standing of these types of popular culture indicates their reach, consumed by a great number of individuals within Japan. Certain qualities they manifest, on the other hand, impose a subtle, almost “delicate” kind of revolt against a set of idées fixes surrounding the relationship between clothes and gender. Using media and cultural texts as a primary source for discussion enables consideration of these complex links between distortion and reality. As Diana Crane (1990) has argued, both are parts of the “real” world where these case studies are first produced.

The first important issue this book raises is that, through negotiating male readers’ desire to attract admirers and to dress for their own pleasure, young men’s fashion magazines endorse the idea that crafting a pleasant look is the foundation of self-assurance and a successful life. Secondly, I show that female Japanese singers allow an accentuation of femininity without necessarily sexualization through the use of Japanese cute (kawaii) aesthetics. The third possibility this book explores is that highly decorative styles of Japanese Lolita fashion should not be read as symbolic of restriction and passivity. The fourth point this book addresses is that, as illustrated by the Japanese embrace of the “Ivy style,” both men and women engage with fashion in very similar ways. This is a major point of difference with the role of fashion historically in Euro-America.

These readings offer novel ways to understand the relationship between gender and dress, which is often blamed for maintaining repressive distinctions between “man” and “woman” in contemporary culture. Ultimately, this book aims to show that the Japanese appropriation of European clothing forms shows that there might be different, and hence less rigid approaches to understanding the relationship between fashion and gender. Japanese refashioning of European clothing concepts, this book argues, offers a compelling case for the implication of the aesthetics of fashion, gender, and cross-culturalism.

Le rococo, en dépit de la méfiance ou de l’ironie
qu’il suscite, occupe une place centrale dans
l’historiographie, en particulier au sein de ce
qu’il est convenu d’appeler l’histoire des styles.
De ce fait, il structure et détermine, par les frontières
et les corpus qu’il établit, notre appréhension
de l’art du XVIIIe siècle, mais également le
regard que nous portons sur les soi-disant revivals
du phénomène aux XIXe, XXe et XXIe siècles.
L’objectif des articles publiés dans ce cahier est
d’interroger les fondements des discours élaborés
autour de la notion de rococo, en d’autres
termes de développer sur celle-ci une réflexion
épistémologique.

Fra le residenze aristocratiche modenesi, il Palazzo Solmi (via Emilia Centro n. 269), già dimora della illustre casata dei marchesi Rangoni, di antica nobiltà feudale, costituisce sia per dimensioni che per ricchezza e qualità delle testimonianze artistiche uno degli episodi edilizi più cospicui e interessanti. Sulla direttrice viaria di più alto prestigio nel tessuto cittadino, la via Emilia, la vasta fabbrica è improntata da quel "restauramento" che sulla metà del Settecento il marchese Bonifacio Rangoni divisò d'intraprendere. Ma al di là della predominante connotazione settecentesca, l'edificio si presenta come un palinsesto sul quale sono andati stratificandosi fatti artistici risalenti fino all'epoca medievale, da alcune monofore gotiche alle testimonianze rinascimentali che meritarono al palazzo la citazione nel Der Cicerone di Jacob Burckhardt, come lo scalone e il balcone interno con la data 1544 e l’intitolazione a Lucrezia dei conti Pico della Mirandola, consorte del condottiero Claudio Rangoni, ascritto a Giulio Romano. Nell’attuale fisionomia del palazzo è dominante il carattere settecentesco; oscuro il nome dell’artefice, probabilmente Pietro Termanini, l’architetto di Francesco III d'Este, che vi avrebbe lavorato in data di poco anteriore al 1760. All'interno, la Sala degli Specchi, squisito episodio di un gusto rocaille assai vicino al "Salottino d'oro" del Palazzo Ducale di Modena.

Nesta obra fizemos o levantamento do património religioso desta freguesia do concelho de Santa Comba Dão e enquadrámo-lo no património da diocese de Viseu.
Salientámos as imagens dos séculos XV e XVI dos santos padroeiros, os vestígios da arquitectura primitiva de algumas capelas, a arquitectura da Igreja na transição do Barroco para o Rococó da região, os cem anos de obras de talha na Igreja Matriz e, de um modo geral, a “paisagem uniformemente barroca” da paróquia.
Acompanhámos todo o percurso das obras através da apresentação da redízima, dos eleitos, dos artistas e da bênção. Ou seja, a feitura/aquisição deste património construído e móvel é aqui enquadrada sócio-economicamente, dando-se particular destaque ao modo como era custeada e às biografias dos eleitos para a direcção das obras, bem como artisticamente, integrando as obras de arte aqui realizadas no contexto da diocese de Viseu e na vida dos artistas que aqui trabalharam.
No estudo, damos mesmo a conhecer a biografia e as fases estilísticas daquele que se afigura ser o maior entalhador e escultor da Beira na segunda metade do século XVIII – José da Fonseca Ribeiro.

Nella Modena del Settecento, due palazzi aristocratici emergono per valori di storia e di arte: le dimore già dei conti Sabbatini e dei conti Cesi, che si fronteggiano sul corso Canalgrande, l'itinerario urbano forse più prestigioso della capitale estense. Nei loro cantieri, entrambi attivi poco dopo la metà del secolo, gli apporti dei più rinomati artisti e artigiani del ducato – dal pittore Francesco Vellani al quadraturista Ludovico Bosellini, al fabbro Giambattista Malagoli – si coniugano in una mirabile armonia d'esiti: il connubio illuministico di forma e funzione, di estetica e razionalità s'invera nelle forme di un misurato ma prezioso barocchetto, che raggiunge talora suggestioni scenografiche. I due palazzi, infatti, costituiscono casi esemplari, e fra loro complementari, al fine di analizzare i caratteri dell'edilizia e dell'apparato figurativo e ornamentale espressi nel ducato modenese all'apice dello stile barocchetto, immediatamente prima del volgersi del gusto verso la sintassi neoclassica. I due edifici esibiscono le scelte estetiche dei committenti: il conte Alessandro Sabbatini, di recentissima nobilitazione; il conte Ferdinando Cesi, di antica aristocrazia feudale. E' occasione per un confronto fra le tipologie strutturali adottate, come il " percorso " interno di rappresentanza costituito da atrio-cortile-scalone-sala di ricevimento, o come la soluzione del salone a doppia altezza con ballatoio superiore, che funge da snodo tra i vari appartamenti. E' occasione anche per riconsiderare i cospicui cicli pittorici celebrativi delle famiglie proprietarie: i soggetti mitologici e marziali di Francesco Vellani in Palazzo Sabbatini e gli inediti episodi dell'Eneide in Palazzo Cesi, attribuiti a Ludovico Bosellini. Mentre la sequenza di sale e salotti offre una straordinaria ricchezza di contributi decorativi, con quadrature prospettiche, stucchi e intagli lignei esemplari del gusto rococò e della moda della chinoiserie, sollecitando confronti e rimandi rispetto ad altri coevi palazzi della capitale estense.

A história da arte brasileira entre os séculos XVIII e XIX ganhou diversas contribuições nas últimas décadas. A inserção de novas temáticas ampliou a discussão das linguagens artísticas e dos atores sociais que viveram neste período. Entretanto, ainda aparece como lacuna, o estudo da trajetória artística de alguns pintores, bem como os processos produtivos realizados pelos mesmos. Neste sentido, pretendeu-se nesta pesquisa o estudo da trajetória artística de Francisco Xavier Carneiro (1765-1840), pintor mineiro que atuou na cidade de Mariana e região. Assim, elencaram-se historicamente as obras do artista, compondo um catálogo preliminar de sua produção. Paralelo a isso, apresentou-se subsídios para o estudo das etapas de produção da pintura religiosa no contexto, a partir da análise documental oriunda das execuções pictóricas. Para tal empreitada, foram utilizadas as diretrizes metodológicas expostas por Michael Baxandall em seu livro “Padrões de Intenção”.

Este trabalho analisa as obras de talha do século XVIII e XIX existentes na igreja Matriz de Santo Antônio de Guaratinguetá, cidade localizada no Vale do Paraíba paulista, com o objetivo de situá-las no campo mais amplo do arte colonial luso-brasileira, em particular do rococó religioso. O estudo baseia-se na bibliografia já existente sobre o assunto bem como documentação coetânea aos objetos estudados. Como resultado, além de analisado o contexto em que foram criadas essas obras de escultura, foi elaborado um memorial descritivo e levantadas informações acerca da atividade de quase duas dezenas de artífices escultores e pintores, vários desses ainda desconhecidos.

The palazzo was erected on the strada della Darsena, today
known as corso Vittorio Emanuele II (No. 59). Work started in 1683,
commissioned by Rocco Lorenzotti, Councillor and Secretary to the
Duke Francesco II d’Este. After passing hands to the Molza family of
Marquises and then in 1751 being sold to Count Francesco Greco of
Mirandola, it was then sold once more in 1765 to the Ducal Chamber.
Still incomplete, the great building was described as “coarse,
shapeless and unusable”. But in 1772 it caught the eye of a gregarious
Neapolitan noble, Paolo Rango d’Aragona, a great traveller and man of the world, frequenter of the European courts, as he is described by Giacomo Casanova in the pages of the Histoire de ma vie. Rango d’Arangona was married to a very rich English noble lady, Jane Long – known as donna Giovanna – the daughter of Charles Long of Longville in Jamaica and a member of one of the most important families of the British upper classes.

Nel quartiere modenese di Terranova, addizione cinquecentesca, in un luogo urbanistico privilegiato per ampiezza dei lotti e prossimità alla sede ducale, il palazzo sorse sulla strada della Darsena, odierno corso Vittorio Emanuele II (n. c. 59), a partire dal 1683, su committenza di Rocco Lorenzotti, Consigliere e Segretario del duca Francesco II d’Este. Passato alla famiglia dei marchesi Molza e nel 1751 venduto al conte Francesco Greco della Mirandola, fu poi da questi ceduto nel 1765 alla Camera Ducale. Rimasto incompiuto, il grandioso edificio si presentava “rozzo, informe ed inservibile”. Ma nel 1772 attirava l’interesse di un nobile napoletano dalla singolare personalità, Paolo Rango d’Aragona, gran viaggiatore e uomo di mondo, frequentatore delle corti europee, come lo dipinge Giacomo Casanova nelle pagine della Histoire de ma vie, sposato a una ricchissima gentildonna inglese, Jane Long – donna Giovanna –, figlia di Charles Long di Longville in Giamaica, appartenente a una delle più importanti famiglie dell’alta borghesia inglese. Paolo Rango d’Aragona accrebbe i suoi numerosi titoli di nobiltà con l’acquisto del feudo marchionale di San Martino e Campogalliano, intraprendendo una straordinaria scalata sociale che l’avrebbe portato ai vertici della corte modenese. Mentre procedeva alla riqualificazione della Rocca feudale di San Martino in Rio, acquisiva a livello vitalizio dalla Camera Ducale l’incompiuto Palazzo già Lorenzotti, che a partire dal 1772 avrebbe trasformato in una delle più splendide residenze della capitale estense.
Lo scalone d’onore, che si crede già strutturato a fine Seicento, all’epoca di Rocco Lorenzotti, da maestranze operose anche nei cantieri ducali, è uno spettacolare esempio di scala “imperiale”, abbellita dalle decorazioni parietali di Ludovico Bosellini. Documenti in parte inediti illuminano sullo splendido giardino di singolare estensione, che doveva ritagliare, entro le mura cittadine, un frammento di Arcadia, e descrivono i sontuosi ambienti, con pitture, marmi, stucchi e dorature del più squisito stile rococò, ove dal dopoguerra ha sede l’Accademia Nazionale di Lettere, Scienze e Arti di Modena.

This short essay will elaborate on the developments that emerged following the ideals of the Enlightenment, and the increased influence of art and culture on society. During the eighteenth century, an intellectual movement called the Age of Enlightenment, delved into Europe and it’s colonies (Benton & DiYanni, 2014). Society adopted a new way of approaching human values, such as the desire for equality, honest distribution of power, value for nature, religious freedom, progress, humanism and the idea of a democracy (Benton & DiYanni, 2014).

Marco Polo introdujo la porcelana china en occidente en el año1295. A finales del siglo XV, el control del comercio con Oriente, pasará a manos de los portugueses que abrirían la ruta hacia el Índico. A partir del siglo XVI se multiplicaron los intentos por conseguir este extraordinario material. Los ejemplares más antiguos conocidos de pasta tierna son los realizados en Florencia hacia 1575, las porcelanas de los Medici. En el siglo XVII nuevas investigaciones en Francia dieron como resultado la obtención de pasta tierna que carecía de caolín. El conde Ehrenfried Walther Von Tschirhausen, en 1704 consigue crear porcelana caolínita. Así se creará la fábrica de Meissen que sirvió como modelo para el resto de las fábricas fundadas en Europa durante el siglo XVIII.
Marco Polo brought Porcelain into Europe in 1295. By the end of the 15 th century Portugal controlled the eastern commerce and opened maritime trading routes in the Indian Ocean. From the 16 th century onwards there was a great interest to obtain this extraordinary material. The oldest pieces of soft paste are the ones made in Florence around 1575, the Medici's Porcelains. In the 17 th century in France, new investigations leaded to the creation of soft paste, a paste that didn't contained kaolin clay. The Count of Ehrenfried, Walther Von Tschirhausen, managed to make kaolin porcelain in 1704. He founded Meissen factory, a model that inspired the rest of the factories created in Europe in the 18 th century.

L'edificio noto come Palazzo Rangoni Tacoli Carlotti, in piazzale San Domenico a Modena, è autentico palinsesto dell’architettura e della decorazione dall’epoca rinascimentale al barocchetto, fino al gusto neoclassico e al revival degli stili. Innalzato a partire dal 1468 dal conte Cristoforo Rangoni, conserva nell'atrio una serie di colonne lapidee risalenti a quell'epoca; a quel primo intervento si deve anche il torrione angolare - poi ingentilito da modifiche successive - suggerito, probabilmente, dalla volontà di rievocare l’origine cavalleresca e feudale della famiglia. Nel Cinquecento e ai primi del Seicento un vasto salone del palazzo era adibito a sala da spettacolo per rappresentazioni e commedie, alla presenza di illustri ospiti e, dal 1598, dei duchi d'Este e della loro corte, dopo che questi si erano trasferiti a Modena a seguito della devoluzione di Ferrara alla Chiesa. Nel 1716 il palazzo fu ceduto ai conti Marsciano, che lo detennero sino al 1786. E’ ora possibile rettificare quanto finora ritenuto sulla committenza dei grandi interventi al palazzo nella stagione del barocchetto, che spettano ai Testa di Marsciano, e in particolare al conte Lodovico: l’atrio fu riformulato come nodo distributivo  e di collegamento tra il settore cortilivo, destinato a giardino, e lo scalone; quest'ultimo, solenne "macchina" entro un grandioso vano d’impianto rettangolare, segue la fortunata tipologia della scala a forbice, ovvero con le due rampe parallele al muro di spina, che in loco vantava gli alti modelli di Bartolomeo Avanzini, l’architetto di Francesco I d’Este, presso il Palazzo Ducale di Sassuolo e il Collegio di San Carlo o dei Nobili. La decorazione a stucco si svolge in un rocaille delicato e brillante, di levità “francese”, inedito quasi, in Modena. Già chi scrive ipotizzò che l’idea progettuale dello scalone spetti al reggiano Andrea Tarabusi, peraltro debitore ai modi rococò di Torreggiani. Nell’ultimo Settecento il palazzo giunse ad Achille Tacoli, marchese di San Possidonio. Alla sua committenza, attorno al 1790, si devono la cancellata in ferro battuto e il lampione centrale, da assegnare a Giambattista Malagoli, il noto fabbro attivo per i duchi d’Este, e le pitture che decorano tre stanze dell'appartamento nobile, dovute ai neoclassici Geminiano Vincenzi, figurista, e Vincenzo Galli, ornatista. Nel 1818 il marchese Antonio Tacoli realizzò un "adattamento di gusto" nelle facciate e nel torrione; attorno al 1890 il marchese Pio commissionò al pittore Andrea Becchi, esponente della scuola carpigiana di decorazione, l'ornato di varie stanze, in una sorta di revival classicistico. Anche l'iconografia cittadina sette-ottocentesca tramanda la caratteristica mole del palazzo, connotata dal torrione sovrastato da merli ghibellini.

In Rococo historiography, the first half of the eighteenth
century is generally described as the golden
age par excellence of decoration. The so-called major
arts are often considered to have played a lesser
role in its artistic development. The period is thus
systematically associated with artefacts produced
by artisans, hence belonging to a less dignified category
in the artistic hierarchy. In order to investigate
the ideological background of this assumption,
the article focuses on the debates on art which
emerged, mainly in France, in the 1740s. These
highly biased discourses, targeting the so-called
bad taste of contemporary French painting and interior
decoration, shaped a vision of the first half of
the eighteenth century of which many aspects were
later inherited by Rococo historiography, especially
in its relation to decoration.

The new publication by Ute Engel discusses two main issues: the first is how German art historians discovered, defined, and canonised seventeenth- and eighteenth-century German art and architecture. The second is the more general methodical and conceptual approach to the art of the Baroque and Rococo periods. Her main conclusion is that there
was no direct or apparent relation between art historical discourse and nationalist rhetoric. With this interpretation, Engel’s book contrasts with readings of German art historiography along the lines of political history, as they were developed from the 1990s onwards; instead, it implies that there was an increasing attention not to national, but to regional varieties in Baroque, and especially Rococo art and architecture. ‘Style’ and ‘nation’ therefore  act in the plural in Engel’s book – Baroque and Rococo, Bavarian, Prussian and Saxon were just a few of the many options used to construct the antagonisms and comparisons between styles and identities that formed the main argumentative structure of German art historical publications in the long nineteenth century.

Since the 1960s, James Deetz and other archaeologists have attributed the appearance of the cherub icon on colonial-period gravemarkers to religious movements such as the Great Awakening or diminished Puritan influence during the eighteenth century. The cherub has been interpreted by many scholars as a symbol of a heavenly being that reflects freer perceptions on life and the afterlife. This article challenges the long-held religious connotations of the cherub icon. Instead, this article demonstrates that the icon relates to the wider Rococo artistic trend that was the prime influence on the forms and decorations of contemporary material culture. In this artistic fashion, the cherub is a putto, a Classical allegorical element that remained common in architectural and mortuary sculpture. The use of the putto comes with a number of additional contemporary elements and shows that consumer choice connected to the latest fashion instead of changing religious attitudes being the driver behind iconographic and decoration change on colonial gravemarkers.

With the strictures of Modernism behind us, the possibilities of ornament are being rediscovered, but often in a vacuum without method or understanding. Oliver Domeisen describes how in his diploma unit at the Architectural Association in London ornament is being pursued with a purpose as contemporary digital design and construction techniques are fused with an awareness of grammar and definition. Il s'agit de voir comment un imaginaire mondain, galant et rocaille de la Fontaine conteur, est construit par l'illustration de ses contes et nouvelles au 18e siècle. Pour cela l'article est à la fois une analyse des illustrations des contes de La Fontaine au 18e siècle, notamment par Eisen et Fragonard et une réflexion sur les relations entre texte et image - conter et peindre.

Torino, 1720-1760 circa. Sotto la guida degli architetti Filippo Juvarra prima, e Benedetto Alfieri poi, il Palazzo Reale dei Savoia è al centro di un impegnativo programma di rinnovamento decorativo. La monumentale magnificenza seicentesca cede il passo a una progettazione attenta alla funzione degli ambienti e alla seduzione dell’ornato. I cantieri di allestimento, inaugurati da Vittorio Amedeo II per il matrimonio del figlio, sono poi ampiamente promossi dallo stesso Carlo Emanuele III, cui si deve la programmatica volontà di rimodellare quasi interamente gli interni del palazzo.
È questo il contesto all’interno del quale si muove la straordinaria, quanto poco nota, attività degli intagliatori in legno nel Palazzo Reale di Torino. Sessanta artisti della decorazione – di cui emergono ora i nomi e le competenze professionali – risposero a quella richiesta di rinnovamento, attribuendo una precisa riconoscibilità alla fortunata stagione del rococò a Torino. L’incontro tra la fortunata conservazione delle decorazioni e la ricchezza dei documenti d’archivio ha indirizzato questa ricerca, consentendo di rilevare il ruolo di alcuni brillanti intagliatori nella definizione della cornice ambientale in cui si svolgeva la vita di corte. Lo spoglio delle fonti ha così sollecitato e guidato l’indagine su alcune questioni che risultano centrali per lo studio del design d’epoca moderna: attraverso quali processi si progetta e realizza un ornamento? Chi si assume la responsabilità della sua elaborazione? Che cosa significa, nel Piemonte della prima metà del Settecento, ricercare un preciso «effetto dell’intaglio ed il vero gusto» di una decorazione?

Johann Anton Langenhan the Younger was born to a family with a four-generation-long sculpting tradition. His father, Johann Anton the Elder, came to Toruń from the Franconian Coburg. In 1751–1755 Johann Anton the Younger learnt the sculptor’s craft in his father’s workshop and later spent some of his apprenticeship period in Gdańsk. Following the death of Johann Anton the Elder (1757), he returned to his home city and became a master sculptor in the local guild of sculptors and painters. In 1759 he obtained the citizenship of Toruń. In the course of his craftsman’s activity in the city, he took in for apprenticeship only his own son, Johann Gottlieb (1783–1787), who later practiced the craft in his father’s workshop.
The second half of the 18th century marked a decline in trade and crafts in Toruń. The crisis also affected Langenhan, who was no longer capable of supporting his family with income obtained from his work as a sculptor. Consequently, he accepted various jobs, from being a bell-ringer and a Polish cantor in the Holy Trinity church located in the New Town of Toruń, a teacher of drawing in the Academic Gymnasium (secondary school), to tasks consisting in cutting of planks and pr ocessing of stones for municipal use.
So far, limited research has been done on the artistic activity of Langenhan. The only documented fact is his employment as a woodcarver in the execution of the organ balconies and the organ case in the Evangelical community church in the Old Town in Toruń (today’s church of the Holy Spirit). It seems legitimate to attribute to Langenhan some other works of art decorating local churches, namely the pulpit and the canopy of Saint Mary’s figure in Saint James’s church (ca. 1760), as well as the Ecce Homo altar in Saint Mary’s church (ca. 1760). A previously unknown archival source also allows to associate Langenhan’s name with the side altars of the church in Broniewo (1791). Johann Anton Langenhan the Younger died in Toruń on 20th February 1795. He fell victim to a typhoid epidemic, which also claimed the life of Johann Gottlieb, his son and potential heir to his workshop.

A COMPLEX OF GARDEN SCULPTURES IN THE WALEWSKIS’ RESIDENCE IN WALEWICE. UNKNOWN WORKS BY SCULPTORS OF WARSAW ROCOCO: PIERRE COUDRAY AND JOHANN CHRISOSTOM REDTLER
A residence in Walewice, famous for its magni cent neoclassical palace designed by Hilary Szpilawski, was in the 2nd half of the 19th century surrounded by a spacious landscaped park. On this occasion, a creator of the park, Valerian Kronenberg, brought a complex of sculptures almost certainly from Warsaw to Walewice and, in accordance with the picturesque idea ruling in the neo-romantic landscaping, located them in various places in the garden. These sculptures, from ca. mid-18th century, were almost certainly taken over from demolished baroque and Rococo Warsaw residences, most likely from the palace gardens. With the current state of knowledge of the issue of degradation of the capital residences and their demolition aimed at making way for social housing in the 19th century, we are not able to determine which particular Warsaw palace facility Walewice sculptures come from. In the 19th century, over 20 palaces were demolished and the same number was completely transformed. Walewice complex consists of: two hermas, male and female ones, from the lawn in front of the main body, a statue of Mars and a pair of putti from the front of the palace rear facade, statues of Apollo and Diana from behind the river surrounding the palace from the rear and a group of Ajax and Cassandra separated from the complex. The latter obviously has features of the style of an outstanding and popular Warsaw sculptor of the Rococo period, Johann Chrisostom Redtler (working in Warsaw from ca. 1736 to ca. 1770) from Vienna, a student of Giovanni Giuliani and Lorentz Mattielli. Others were made by Pierre Coudray, a French sculptor, working essentially in Dresden, educated there, as well as in Italy and in England, staying in Warsaw in times of the Seven Years War, in 1756–1765 and working for, apart from the minister, Heinrich Brühl, the Polish nobility: among others, the Branickis, Czartoryskis or Cetners. A residence of one of these families might have been decorated with the Walewice statues. The paper considers the above issue, as well as relationships with other works of artists and associations with European sculptures.

Dentro del actual proceso de restauración de la colegiata de Santa María la Mayor, en Calatayud, iniciada con la actualización y revisión del Plan Director en 2011, se inscribe la reciente actuación del Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de España, que ha atendido a la recuperación del ábside y del cuerpo de sacristía. Elementos con una compleja historia constructiva, han sido objeto de trabajos de muy diversa naturaleza en respuesta a las patologías, también diversas, y en especial, de tipo estructural, que presentaban. Las obras y su paralelo estudio histórico y arqueológico han permitido un mejor conocimiento de la historia del edificio y facilitado la interpretación de algunos de los problemas de conservación diagnosticados.

The current restoration process of the Collegiate Church of St. Mary Major, in Calatayud, which was initiated with the updated and revised Master Plan in 2011, includes the recent intervention of the Cultural Heritage Institute of Spain in the recovery of the apse and the vestry. The elements have a complex structural history and the work carried out on them has been diverse in nature in response to their varied pathologies and, in particular, structural types. The works, and their parallel historical and archaeological study, have provided a better understanding of the history of the building and enabled the interpretation of some of the conservation problems identified.

Il s'agit d'analyser l'inflexion de la notion esthétique de "grâce" et de "je ne sais quoi" vers l'effet gracieux dans le discours la peinture de Roger de Piles à Watelet et d'examiner comment la notion s'articule avec le classicisme, le rococo et le néo-classicisme.

Este artigo trata da biografia e obra do entalhador Bartholomeu Teixeira Guimarães (atual Felgueiras, Portugal, c. 1738 - Itu, Brasil, 1806). O registro de seu nome foi descoberto apenas em 2014. A partir de então, foi possível encontrar seu testamento e registros em censos populacionais. O artífice adaptou elementos comuns ao rococó minhoto para o padrão da região aonde veio morar no Brasil, e tornou-se parâmetro para outros artífices que se seguiram. Os elementos por ele
introduzidos foram também utilizados, com variações formais, adaptações, fusões e reinvenções, por outros artistas paulistas, de outros grupos e oficinas, de 1760 a 1830, ou seja, durante setenta anos,
e se tornaram, na forma por ele cristalizada, a característica mais marcante e única da talha paulista em relação ao rococó de outros estados brasileiros.

La sacristía de la Colegiata de Santa María de Calatayud constituye una de las muestras más interesantes de la arquitectura rococó en tierras aragonesas. Este espacio, del que apenas se ha tratado hasta el momento, presenta unas peculiares características cuyo estudio pormenorizado lo acerca a un conjunto de edificios de la primera mitad del siglo XVIII diseñados por el arquitecto carmelita calzado fray José Alberto Pina.

The Fontana family, which has always been known as an exponent of architecture and stucco decoration between the 17th and 18th centuries, has in Carlo Fontana the greatest representative in the field of architecture. Carlo collaborated in many projects with the sculptor, plasterer and decorator Antonio Raggi, who was also the master of Carlo’s cousin, Baldassarre Fontana. With this article we would like to outline the relationship between the decorations and the architectures of Carlo Fontana and the continuity and discontinuity of this relationship also implemented by his cousin Baldassarre. The contacts with many plasterers, coming from the territories of northern Italy and Switzerland, also requested by Carlo, allowed both the use of “known” labour within the construction sites followed by Fontana and a dissemination of knowledge of stucco’s art in central Italy. This task was also carried out by the sculptor and plasterer Raggi, who worked with the architect from Rancate and played an important role in Baldassarre Fontana’s stylistic training. Baldassarre also experimented with late Baroque languages in the Moravian and Polish construction sites. The plastic arts are a common thread that accompanies both the “genealogy” of the Fontana family and the architectures that were designed and decorated by it.

Rodzina Fontanów, której członkowie od zawsze są postrzegani jako eksponenci architektury i dekoracji stiukowej XVII i XVIII wieku, ma swojego największego przedstawiciela na niwie architektury w osobie Carla Fontany. Carlo współpracował przy wielu projektach z rzeźbiarzem, tynkarzem i dekoratorem Antoniem Raggim, który również był mistrzem kuzyna Carla, Baldassarre’a Fontany. Niniejszy artykuł zarysowuje związek pomiędzy dekoracjami a dziełami architektonicznymi Carla Fontany oraz kontynuację tego związku lub jej brak w przypadku działalności Baldassarre’a. Kontakty z wieloma tynkarzami, pochodzącymi z północnej części Włoch i Szwajcarii, o które zabiegał również Carlo, pozwoliły Fontanom rozpowszechnić wiedzę na temat sztuki stiukowej w środkowych Włoszech. Swój udział miał w tym również rzeźbiarz i tynkarz Raggi, który pracował z architektem z Rancate i odegrał ważną rolę w ukształtowaniu stylistycznym Baldassarre’a. Baldassarre eksperymentował również z późnobarokowymi stylami na morawskich i polskich placach budowy. Sztuki plastyczne stanowią wspólny wątek wiążący się zarówno z „genealogią” rodziny Fontanów, jak i dziełami architektonicznymi, które były projektowane i dekorowane przez jej przedstawicieli.
