Jean-Honoré Fragonard

The Garden of Love theme in art, traced from the Middle Ages--through Rubens, Watteau, and Fragonard--to Mozart's Nozze di Figaro. Illustrated. Originally a lecture for the Metropolitan Museum, NYC, later published as an essay here in the Festschrift for Andrew M. Greeley.

This short essay will elaborate on the developments that emerged following the ideals of the Enlightenment, and the increased influence of art and culture on society. During the eighteenth century, an intellectual movement called the Age of Enlightenment, delved into Europe and it’s colonies (Benton & DiYanni, 2014). Society adopted a new way of approaching human values, such as the desire for equality, honest distribution of power, value for nature, religious freedom, progress, humanism and the idea of a democracy (Benton & DiYanni, 2014).

The Swing by Jean-Honore Fragonard (Fig. 2, Appendix A) and The Seasons by Alphonse Mucha (Fig. 1, Appendix A) are both cited as representative of their style movements—  French Rococo and Art Nouveau, respectively. In this paper, these works will form the basis of a cross-temporal examination of the ways in which the French aristocracy expressed their desires and anxieties through their artistic tastes in the time periods bracketing the Age of Revolution. Uniting the Rococo and French Art Nouveau are themes of safety and harmony depicted through scenes of nature.

Il s'agit de voir comment un imaginaire mondain, galant et rocaille de la Fontaine conteur, est construit par l'illustration de ses contes et nouvelles au 18e siècle. Pour cela l'article est à la fois une analyse des illustrations des contes de La Fontaine au 18e siècle, notamment par Eisen et Fragonard et une réflexion sur les relations entre texte et image - conter et peindre.

This essay looks at the painting "The Swing" by Fragonard as a representation of a sort of fairy tale of an animal bride. This cycle takes the picture out of an environment that, for all the hint of rebellion, is extremely limited in terms of era and social class. It places it in the grand drama of humankind, as we try to negotiate our place among animals, plants, and the natural world.

Il narratore rappresenta uno degli aspetti più innovativi e complessi del capolavoro ariostesco. Eppure, se ci chiediamo quando la figura del narratore sia stata rappresentata per la prima volta nella ricchissima tradizione figurativa dell’Orlando furioso, ci accorgiamo che ciò è accaduto con molto ritardo, soltanto a fine Settecento, ovvero con il progetto grafico di Fragonard. Per spiegare questa svolta storica, l’articolo suggerisce l’esistenza di una profonda connessione tra l’intuizione di Fragonard e il nuovo modo di leggere il Furioso, sorto durante l’ascesa del moderno genere romanzesco. Mette a fuoco inoltre il contributo di Voltaire, che ne La Pucelle d’Orléans (1762) e nel lemma Epopée (1771) valorizzò il narratore ariostesco, e ipotizza che Fragonard ne sia stato consapevolmente influenzato. Esplora infine la traduzione in immagini della dimensione metanarrativa del testo e la riflessione sul ruolo del narratore realizzate dall’artista, alla luce del percorso “ariostesco” compiuto attraverso le illustrazioni dei testi di La Fontaine e di Cervantes.

The narrator represents one of the most innovative and complex aspects of the Orlando Furioso. Yet if we search for the first artistic depiction of this figure, we find that he appears quite late in the rich history of visual representations of Ariosto’s masterpiece. In fact, the narrator first appears only at the end of the eighteenth century in the artistic project of Jean Honoré Fragonard. What are the reasons for this historical shift? This paper suggests that there existed a deep-rooted connection between Fragonard’s artistic sensibility and a new way of reading the Furioso that emerged alongside the rise of the genre of the modern novel. This study further hypothesizes that Fragonard was knowingly influenced by Voltaire who had recently, in his Pucelle d’Orléans (1762) and the article Epopée (1771), praised the Ariostan narrator. Lastly, in light of Fragonard’s illustrations of the works of La Fontaine and Cervantes, this paper concludes by exploring the artist’s depiction of the metaliterary dimensions of Ariosto’s text and his broader reflections on the role of the narrator.

Greuze, Drouais and David.

Textes réunis et présentés par DANIEL RABREAU et CHRISTOPHE HENRY. Les « Annales du Centre Ledoux », publiées sous l'égide de notre association, ont fait paraître leur tome VI chez William Blake & Co, un ouvrage collectif entièrement consacré à un chef-d'oeuvre trop méconnu de Fragonard : Corésus et Callirhoé. Publication éditée en 2007 par le Centre Ledoux en collaboration avec le GHAMU, avec le concours de la subvention du CNL et du BQR de prix : 25 € Fascinant pour les uns (la fortune critique ici rassemblée en témoigne), déroutant voire repoussant pour les autres, le Corésus et Callirhoé de Fragonard (Louvre) est une de ces peintures que l'on exhausse, sans doute avec raison, au rang de chef-d'oeuvre pour n'avoir jamais réussi à les circonscrire ni par le sens du goût ni par les moyens de l'esprit. Curieux et beau tableau né de nulle part ou bien du délire d'un Diderot trouvant ici le complice idéal de ses rêves d'instauration picturale, ce chef-d'oeuvre par lequel le peintre le plus aimé du XVIIIe siècle obtint son agrément académique et sa reconnaissance publique n'a rien des bluettes bigarrées qui ont fait la réputation de l'époque de la philosophie du sentiment : c'est un drame, un crime, une tragédie exaltant la suprême beauté de la ronde toxique du désir, de la haine et de la mort par les recherches fiévreuses d'un pinceau à la fois puissant, hésitant et cultivé. Une visite de ce laboratoire pictural de l'émotion et du doute s'imposait donc, et c'est à celle-ci qu'invitent les cinq études rassemblées ici, quitte à ce que le cher siècle des Lumières en ressorte un peu plus asphyxié par les irrationnelles exhalaisons de la spiritualité et du langage de l'art. Selon certaines habitudes visuelles occidentales fixes, le fond s'opposerait à la forme ou à la figure, l’avant au fond. Pour un tableau, une sculpture ou même pour une architecture, le rapport entre le fond et la forme qui s’y découpe révèle un certain ordre du monde symbolique, du moins signifiant. Or, cette hiérarchisation se voit précisément bouleversée aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles et l’inscription dans une compréhension du monde n’est plus si évidente. L'instabilité engendrée par ce renversements de valeurs met en lumière l’ébranlement des consciences de la seconde modernité, et cela sur plusieurs registres : spirituel, mais aussi politique ou encore sensible. Cette publication entend cerner la manière dont le questionnement sur la notion de fond dans les arts visuels s’articule à des enjeux plus généraux et propres à la période moderne, dont la sécularisation. Aborder une œuvre par le truchement du fond met donc en lumière grand nombre de ses spécificités.

Dans la France du XVIIIe siècle peinture et amour s'épousent. De la fin du règne de Louis XIV à la veille de la Révolution française, les peintres les plus brillants - Watteau, Boucher, Lancret, de Troy, Greuze et Fragonard - consacrent leur talent à l'inspiration amoureuse. Les valeurs identitaires des élites françaises se renouvèlent et s'éloignent de l'héroïsme guerrier pour embrasser les vertus pacificatrices de la galanterie.
