Road Traffic Safety

The realizing and improvement of road infrastructure, of modern road networks provides normal, safe and pleasant road traffic conditions and also help prevent road accidents. The road network, with its constructive characteristics, has to offer optimal conditions for the movement of vehicles, pedestrians and other categories of participants in the road traffic. Starting from the case study of a road sector with heavy road traffic, the current paper analyzes the increase in road safety in Romanian localities along European and national roads through the implementation of specific measures such as setting up sidewalks, installing New Jersey median barriers, expanding the road sectors with 2+1 lanes, replacing normal pedestrian crossings with elevated crossings or with pedestrian crossing with mid-road waiting areas etc.

Abstract: This paper presents an analysis of factors affecting road safety in Greece in an attempt to clarify some reasons for which the Greek road network is less safe than those of the other European Union countries. Road safety index is an important indicator that has been recently introduced as a useful tool to measure the quality of life in many countries and cities. Road safety index is a complex index and it has at least three main components, including road user behavior, vehicle safety, and road infrastructure effects. Many researchers have selected studying road performance from road safety index perspective due to its feasibility and applicability. To calculate the road safety index, a novel approach was proposed using data envelopment analysis method. In this paper, the selected road safety indicators are classified into two groups, namely the desirable and undesirable indicators. The new approach was applied for a case study in the roads of East Azerbaijan Province in Iran. Inefficient roads were recognized applying the proposed method, and strategies were suggested to improve the efficiency of these roads.

Driver behavior significantly impacts road safety, particularly in developing countries like Peshawar, Pakistan, where comprehensive studies are lacking. This research addresses this gap by examining driver behaviors related to traffic safety in Peshawar. Utilizing a Driver Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ) administered through Google Forms, data was collected from 120 respondents. This study employs a Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) method to evaluate ranking criteria and weight factors, considering the unique uncertainties of driving behavior. Results highlight violations as the primary concern, followed by errors and lapses, with subcategories delineated through pairwise comparisons, shedding light on prevalent issues like reckless driving and errors in judgment. Common behaviors such as overtaking slow drivers and abrupt lane changes were identified. Failure to use seat belts, underestimating vehicle speeds, and using mobile devices while driving were also commonly reported. The study's diverse sample, obtained through document-based questionnaires distributed via email to individuals aged 18 and above, including university students, provided insights into driving habits. The majority of respondents held valid driver's licenses, with an average weekly travel distance of 208.5 km reported. These findings offer policymakers valuable insights for targeted interventions aimed at improving traffic safety in Peshawar and serve as a benchmark for similar studies in other developing countries.

Mengemudi merupakan pekerjaan yang monoton apabila dilakukan secara terus menerus. Pekerjaan monoton akan memicu timbulnya kelelahan dan kantuk yang merupakan faktor pemicu human error yang akan mengakibatkan resiko kecelakaan. Sedangkan  mengemudi pada malam hari berbeda dengan mengemudi pada siang hari. Salah satu perbedaan tersebut adalah kelelahan pada mata pengemudi yang terpapar oleh silau cahaya. Oleh karena itu rekonstruksi terhadap faktor-faktor yang berpengaruh terhadap tingkat kelelahan pengemudi serta implikasinya terhadap kecelakaan perlu untuk dilakukan. Background: In spite of ongoing commitment and efforts, road traffic accidents continue to be a leading cause of death and disabilities in India. Adequate knowledge on road safety measures among budding doctors can create awareness and provide preventive counselling to their clients. An attempt was made to assess the knowledge and practices about road safety measures among intern and resident doctors working in tertiary care setting.Methods: An institution based cross-sectional study was conducted among 168 young doctors of Jorhat Medical College, Jorhat, Assam.Results: Among the enrolled study participants 54% were intern and 46% were resident doctors. More than half of the participants were male. Knowledge on different, road signs among the young doctors ranges in between 68% to 99%. Introduction: Road traffic accidents (RTAs) pose a significant burden on the health care system in India with high out of pocket medical expenditure. Awareness about this public health problem is necessary to combat it and this study was carried out to assess knowledge and practice towards road safety among the adult population in the kantha and Nawabganj in unnao district of Uttar Pradesh. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out among 427 adults aged 16 years and above residing in the region for more than one year. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to assess their knowledge and practice towards road safety measures. Results: Majority 69.1% of the participants were in the age group of 16-25 years, males were 70.3 % and 59% had up to matric level of education. In this paper we present research findings on collision warning systems and their influence on traffic safety, and present MEBWS – Motorcycle Emergency Braking Warning System, a patented innovation developed at the Faculty of Information Studies in Novo mesto. MEBWS analyses motorcycle movement in real-time using an accelerometer and GPS speed measurement and monitors the following vehicles using a LIDAR. In case a dangerous situation is detected, the MEBWS alerts vehicles behind the motorcycle with an autonomous flashing LED. Furthermore, we are developing a simulation model that will allow us to gauge the influence of MEBWS on traffic safety in large traffic systems and its contribution to the European Union’s goal “Vision Zero” – to reduce road deaths to almost zero by 2050.

The chapter primarily focuses on observing traffic conflicts (also known as near-accidents) as a site-based road safety analysis technique. Traffic conflicts are a type of surrogate safety measure. The term surrogate indicates that non-accident-based indicators are used to assess VRU safety instead ofthe more traditional approach focusing on accidents (see chapter 2). The theory underpinning surrogate safety measures is briefly described, followed by a discussion on the characteristics of the traffic conflict technique. Next, guidelines for conducting traffic conflict observations using trained human observers or video cameras are presented. Chapter 4 concludes with examples of the use of the traffic conflict technique in road safety studies focusing on VRUs. (Less)

Helm digunakan sebagai alat pelindung kepala standar saat berkendara yang berfungsi untuk melindungi dan mengurangi dampak cidera kepala akibat kecelakaan yang melibatkan sepeda motor. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui karakteristik dan peluang penggunaan helm di Kota Pekanbaru. Data penggunaan helm diperoleh dari pengamatan langsung di lapangan dengan memberi kuesioner kepada pengendara yang melintas pada lokasi penelitian yaitu pada ruas Jalan HR.Suebrantas, Tuanku Tambusai, Riau dan Jendral Sudirman. One of the factors in the occurrence of accidents in driving is because they do not understand the symbols of traffic signs, commit violations and do not pay attention to road markings. This study aims to determine the characteristics of truck transportation operators, the level of understanding of traffic signs, the influence of driving behavior, discipline and safety. The survey was conducted by distributing questionnaires to 200 respondents from September to November 2020 for later analysis using the SPSS program. The results of the study for the characteristics of respondents aged 21-35 years as many as 60%, who have a B1 SIM as much as 98%, while those who have had an accident 1-3 times are 5%. There are 56% of respondents who understand traffic sign symbols and 43% who do not. Driving behavior, discipline and knowledge of traffic signs can affect driving safety by 51% and the rest is explained by other variables.

Every year we lose many young road users in road traffic accidents. Based on traffic accident data issued by the Indonesian National Police in 2017, the number of casualties was highest in the age group 15-19, with 3,496 minor injuries, 400 seriously injured and 535 deaths. Road accidents are considered the most important general health concern, as it results in numerous injuries and deaths worldwide. South Africa is one among the developing countries which experiences the highest rate of such accidents. Traffic accidents are mainly caused by human mistakes such as inattention, misbehaviour and distraction. This study has the aim to research on global tendency of road traffic safety development in the whole history of about 2 decades of Vietnam. For the great deficiency in the related traffic accidents data, it carries out a comparative analysis based on important relevant official legal documents which had great impact on the social life. Together with the more and more serious development of traffic accidents, it seems that there exists a hidden "5- years rule," by which for each 5 years, the traffic accidents become so critical that the authorities should re-intensify their efforts at a higher level in an attempt to control this big social problem, while the announced main approaches for traffic safety of Vietnam as “All people” and “Comprehensiveness” are basically not different with international well-known “4-E (Engineering, Enforcement, Education and Emergency)” and “Traffic Safety Stakeholders”.

The number of road traffic deaths continues to climb, reaching 1.35 million deaths globally in 2016 and road traffic injury is now the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5–29 years (WHO, 2018). Road safety is officially recognized as a global safety issue and it is also included in the Sustainable Development Goals. This is a questionnaire based analysis, which aims to understand the outlook of the general public regarding the current road safety system and to understand the level of awareness regarding the same. Road safety is a multidisciplinary and multivariate scientific field, where every proposed action and measure should be developed and supported through strategies in the areas of engineering, enforcement, education and emergency medical services, taking into consideration social and economic aspects as well. However tools do not create the road safety future, trained professionals do. A robust educational curriculum is the only mean to communicate the necessary insights and knowledge within the constantly evolving environment of road safety. The objective of this paper is the comprehensive proposal for the development and testing, in Belarus, of a Masters Course in road safety according to the Bologna process requirements. In the framework of this proposal, , the requirements set, the masters’ curricula modules as well as the relevant expected learning outcomes are described.

This study assessed the relationship between rainfall and traffic accidents in Lokoja, Nigeria from 2011-2020. Rainfall data was obtained from Nigerian Meteorological Agency, while data on traffic accidents and casualties were obtained from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), both for a period of ten years (2011-2020). Data obtained were summarised using simple percentages, charts, and frequency distribution tables; while Pearson Product Moment Correlation, One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Simple Linear Regression were used for testing of hypotheses. Results revealed that, the amount of rainfall recorded in the study area vary over months and years. The month of September has the highest rainfall amount with an average of 279.35mm, while the month of December is the driest month with an average of 0.78mm. A high positive correlation was found between the monthly traffic crashes and casualties during the period of analysis which was statistically significant (r = .898, n = 12, P < .001). Analysis indicates that 5.4% of the variation in traffic accidents can be explained by rainfall. However, rainfall significantly predict traffic accidents, F (1, 119) = 6.763, P =.01. Analysis also revealed that for every 1mm increase in rainfall, traffic accident cases decrease by 0.018 in the study area. In order to consolidate the efforts of FRSC in effectively reducing the rates of road traffic accidents in the study area and in the country at large, there is need to also obtain data on weather elements of accident prone areas.
