Most of us must have played Chinese Whispers at some point in our lives. The game is fun and teaches a lot of things to people who play attention! Traditionally to play this game, a group of people is required but like all spheres of life technology has redefined the norms for this game as well. Now all you need is a smart phone! With the ever increasing influence of technology in our lives across the globe, it's but natural that the recent decades saw a paradigm shift in how we eat, pray, love, interact, work, relax and play in this Brave New World! Days are exciting and full of possibilities for all strata of society. Technology in one stroke have been able to level many gaps that good Samaritans, development sector and Governments across the globe were trying to bridge for many years. Till last couple of decades, it would have been really difficult to imagine a world where people from certain section of society could freely interact with others. It's heartwarming to see, a rural girl from a developing country can now share her passion for environment with millions of people across the globe with click of a button. An uneducated mother of two can earn her living by showing her culinary skills to the world! A visually impaired, old man can get the world sway with his melodious voice! Technology has really been able to connect people, gave opportunity to those who felt alone. But like any great invention it has its side effect. My mother always says, "Every time a new discovery is made, Good and Evil run towards it to claim the invention. Unfortunately, more than 80% times Evil wins!" This hold true at so many levels. While technology has been a great leveller but it also gave power to destructive noises. People claim things without any validation and use the social media platforms for spreading personal biases. Sometimes a series of these noises can sow seeds in the society to create disturbance at a large scale! Recently I witnessed one such unfortunate event very closely. The event has confirmed my belief that we are trying to find complex solutions to our simple problems! Things that can be resolved by sitting across the table and expressing feelings, gets blown up by accusations from different parties without considering each other's perspective. Some narratives are so single track because they fail to look at the simple facts related to the events. If only all of us can use our better judgements and see things objectively! I know it is a wishful thinking, it is practically impossible sometimes to look at the things from multiple perspective because of various factors like non-exposure to another perspective, limited knowledge of others' contexts, lack of empathy for needs and wants of groups, logistics barriers etc. These things need to be paved by Media at large. Probably that's why Free Media is considered third pillar of Democracy. It is their responsibility to give glimpse of the world to the people who have no windows in their lives. It is imperative that every event is reported with utmost objectivity and all the possibilities are exhausted before publishing or sharing the views. But alas mostly events are reported largely from a single framework. It has gone to the extent that today before reading the article one can guess what would be the views expressed in the article by knowing the name of the publisher or media house! The onus of creating balanced viewpoint and tolerance for varied perspectives, lies on the writers and readers alike. Whether it's a matter of big publications, media houses or a person writing a small text on social media, every writer have to exercise discretion at least on these three levels: What is truth, how it is reported, what will be its implication? Writers cannot be freed from the ethical responsibility of how their writing can impact the lives of many. We have seen so many incidents where the reported events were far from the reality and it adversely impacted the lives of the people involved in it, when edited videos can defame the credibility of the people or organisations, when inconspicuous small texts on social media can spread hatred for a section of society that can challenge the delicate fabric of society or democracy at large! Social media works on the principal of Herd Mentality and all of us should be cognizant of our roles in it. So next time you pick up your smart phone to write or read something, bear this in mind, how close to truth is it?

Buku ini adalah antologi liputan-liputan saya selama berkecimpung menjadi jurnalis di Inibaru.id Semarang. Kenapa saya memberi judul Semarang dan Sahabat Baik? Pertama karena liputan-liputan ini sekitar 90-an persen terjadi di Semarang. Kedua, Semarang bagi saya sudah serupa sahabat baik. Saya tak tahu pasti kapan jatuh cinta dengan kota ini, tapi saya menikmati hidup di sini dengan semua kompleksitas, masalah, dan keindahannya. Ketiga, saya menemukan banyak sahabat-sahabat baik yang berperan besar dalam proses pendewasaan mental dan pribadi saya. Sahabat-sahabat yang dengan sabar memberi saya masukan, membimbing ketidaktahuan, dan mengajari saya segala keterampilan penulisan berita, foto, wacana, serta hal-hal baru lainnya. Inibaru.id mengajarkan saya semua ini dengan kapasitas dan karakternya sendiri.

RESUMO Este artigo tem como objeto de estudo o contexto histórico da invenção da reportagem. Prática característica da atividade jornalística, o gênero assumiu centralidade no exercício da profissão, produzindo autonomia e identidade narrativa ao ofício. No entanto, a função repórter não é intrínseca ao surgimento do jornalismo. Do ponto de vista histórico, a reportagem só pode ser pensada a partir, sobretudo, do século XIX. Inicialmente de pouco prestígio, o trabalho de repórter ganha visibilidade com a emergência dos correspondentes de guerra. Mas, logo passa a ser compreendido como a chamada "essência da profissão". O artigo pretende discutir as raízes históricas da reportagem e da figura do/a repórter, além de pensar sobre a sua reconfiguração ao longo do tempo na prática profissional. A pesquisa utiliza como método e técnica a análise documental e revisão bibliográfica. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: história do jornalismo, reportagem, repórter, identidade profissional. INTRODUÇÃO A reportagem assume centralidade no exercício jornalístico, constituiu-se como elemento fundamental na criação de uma identidade profissional própria da categoria. Alcançou o status de prática discursiva mais associada ao jornalismo (CHALABY, 1998), mas não é intrínseca ao surgimento da atividade. Do ponto de vista histórico, a reportagem-ou o trabalho desenvolvido pela personagem que viria a ser o/a repórter-só pode ser pensada, sobretudo, a partir do século XIX. Foi quase inexistente em 200 dos 400 anos da história da imprensa, quando jornalistas se caracterizavam mais como publicistas com viés de interpretação política (LAGE, 2017). A função de repórter tinha inicialmente pouco prestígio, sua aparição só ganha ênfase com a emergência dos correspondentes de guerra. No entanto, logo passa ser compreendida como o que alguns chamam de "essência da profissão" (TRAQUINA, 2013; BERGAMO, 2011; BAHIA, 2009).

ABSTRACTThis article examines how the Gujarati-speaking Muslim trading class in South(ern) Africa was linked as a reading public through a newspaper, Indian Views, which had been founded in early twentieth-century Durban in opposition to Mahatma Gandhi's Indian Opinion. Under the editorship of Moosa Meer (1929–63) it was a conduit for sustaining existing social networks as well as offering common narratives that galvanized an idea of community embracing its geographically disparate readership. Between 1956 and 1963, Zuleikha Mayat, a self-described housewife born in Potchefstroom but married to a medical doctor in Durban whom she ‘met’ through the newspaper, wrote a weekly column that represented one of the first instances of a South African Muslim woman offering her ideas in print. Resumo: Esta pesquisa tem como objeto de estudo uma das práticas que caracterizam o fazer jornalístico, mas carece de reflexão como método: a reportagem. O estudo se volta para a com-preensão das dimensões do conhecimento tácito acumulado por repórteres, geralmente reduzido a insights pessoais, intuições, palpites e percepções consideradas "naturais" (NONAKA, TA-KEUCHI, 2008). O objeto empírico é o programa Profissão Repórter, conduzido pelo jornalista Caco Barcellos e jovens repórteres semanalmente às quartas-feiras na Rede Globo. Ao expor fragmentos dos bastidores, conflitos éticos e decisões tomadas, torna-se objeto peculiar, também por esperar da equipe participação em todas as fases de uma reportagem. A pesquisa utiliza como método e técnica a análise documental e a revisão bibliográfica, além de entrevistas em profundidade. Resumo As experiências da flânerie na Paris do século XIX influenciaram o trabalho intelectual para além da França. No campo do jornalismo, contribuíram para o fortalecimento de um novo gênero, a reportagem. Este artigo se propõe a refletir sobre as contribuições desta atividade na narrativa da repórter Neide Duarte, símbolo de resistência no jornalismo comprometido em dar visibilidade para o ordinário-ou o que seria considerado "comum", no sentido do banal das ruas. Entendo como a associação da jornalista com a figura do flâneur se reflete no exercício do olhar benjaminiano, caracterizado em reportagens capazes de promover a reflexão com base no caminhar pelas ruas. A partir de conceitos desenvolvidos por Walter Benjamin e da entrevista concedida pela jornalista à autora, buscamos traçar aproximações entre a flânerie e a reportagem enquanto gênero jornalístico surgido no século XIX. The present paper discusses Today We’re Going to Draw Death, a Polish reportage by Wojciech Tochman, dealing with Tutsi genocide of 1994. The analyses show that the narrator‑reporter becomes an independent protagonist of the text. His approach towards what he describes, his commitment or his impartiality as well as his European spirit dominating the Polish one seem to constitute the features of the contemporary reportage where nothing is given to the reader obliged to look for the meaning altogether with the reporter.

At the start of the Spanish Civil War, the Communist reporter Arthur Koestler went to Spain. He was  imprisoned and sentenced to death for espionage by the troops of Franco.The article discusses the story through the French Press.

Warren Denning’s Caucus Crisis (1937) is widely regarded as one of the earliest and most influential works of contemporary polit- ical history to be authored and published in Australia. This paper details how and why Caucus Crisis was written. It finds that Denning originally contextualised the travails of the Scullin gov- ernment in an autobiographical history of Canberra in order to advocate for the ideals with which Canberra had been founded. It suggests that Denning’s treatment of the Scullin government and his diagnosis of its problems reflected a personal disappointment. It also suggests that Denning’s revisions, which largely excised these autobiographical elements, were motivated by a desire to depict the personalities as he had observed them first-hand, and thus produced a book indebted to dramatic tragedy, establishing a form prevalent in Australia today — where narrative drive is strong, characters loom large, and where action is tightly circumscribed.

Journalists play a key role in digital emergency situations. In the midst of the chaos generated by a pandemic like the COVID-19 crisis, the information transmitted by the journalist is crucial to save lives and minimize damage. This chapter explores journalists' reliance on and trust in official and unofficial digital information sources. Specifically, the authors explore the authorities' official information sources involved in crisis management and the unofficial information sources (i.e., victims and those affected). The research suggests a model for journalists' relationship with their digital information sources in covering crises by exploring dependence, type of contact, trust, and purpose. It also synthesizes the main communication errors of the public authorities that manage the response to the crisis.

In 2016, both Republicans and Democratic Party supporters accused each other of receiving favorable press coverage.  We examine stories in a series of newspapers from geographic diverse regions, as well as diversity in endorsements, for negative and neutral stories.  We found evidence of a bad news bias, more news coverage for Donald Trump (equal to that of all other candidates combined), but also more negative press for Trump than positive, though Clinton herself had more negative than positive stories as well.

The transformations derived from the technological convergence have affected the different sectors of the communication and the information. The press, the radio and the television present not only new uses but also new forms of production of contents from the incorporation of the New Technologies of Information and Communication (NTIC). In this frame a new type of reporter arises, the multimedia reporter, that will need of new skills and knowledge to carry out his work. The present article has as purpose present the transformations that the journalistic work has suffered from the technological convergence in Mexico City's dailies El Universal and Reforma.

Through in-depth interviews, this study explored the voices of Asian American journalists who faced unprecedented stresses due to the racist discourse of Asian Americans as carriers of disease during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Socialized to de-emphasize their vulnerabilities in their professional work, Asian American reporters generally claimed they did not experience racist harms, but further probing revealed indirect harms. Women reporters discussed internalized harms such as elevated anxiety and fear, whereas men reporters referenced only external harms such as racial microaggressions. Women reporters also manifested greater self-reflexivity. The importance of analyzing race and gender in White masculine newsrooms is discussed.

The context of use has been widely acknowledged as important when designing and evaluating systems for work related activities. This paper describes in case of mobile news making the synthesized findings on the context of use. Findings are categorized to five components and nineteen subcompo-nents and characterized with examples from our studies. The presented findings validate a previously presented model for context of use in mobile HCI, extend it, and elaborate the definitions for the components. The presented elaborated model can be applied by academics and practitioners in development, research and evaluation activities from identifying requirements to evaluating systems for mobile work. Findings support understanding what circumstances and how they can contribute to user experience and acceptance of designed systems.
