Post-disciplinarity

The study of foodscapes has spread throughout geography at the same time as food scholarship has spearheaded post-disciplinary research. This report argues that geographers have taken to post-disciplinarity to explore the ways that food is ‘more-than-food’ through analyses of the visceral nature of eating and politics and the vital (re)materialisations of food’s cultural geographies. Visceral food geographies illuminate what I call the ‘contingent relationalities’ of food in the critical evaluation of the indeterminate, situated politics of ‘feeling food’ and those of the embodied collectivities of obesity. Questions remain, however, about how a visceral framework might be deployed for broader critiques within foodscapes and the study of human geography. The study of food’s vital materialisms opens up investigation into the practices of the ‘makings’ of meat, food waste and eating networks. Analysis of affect, embodiment and cultural practices are central to these theorisations and suggest consideration of the multiple materialisms of food, space and eating. There is, I contend, in the more radical, ‘post-relational’ approaches to food, the need for a note of caution: Exuberant claims for the ontological, vital agency of food should be tempered by, or at least run parallel to, critical questions of the real politik of political and practical agency in light of recent struggles over austerity, food poverty and food justice.

This paper examines the relationship between the contemporary transformation of bodies and boundaries of knowledge and the curatorial treatment of media art in museum collections and displays. It suggests that the " undisciplined " nature of media art objects challenges the predominantly mono-disciplinary epistemological structure of most mainstream art museums. The paper argues that the curatorial strategy of Monan-isms—the inaugural hang of the collection of the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart, Tasmania creates a fertile and integrative context for media arts, by resisting the logic of the disciplinary object. The paper identifies MONA as part of a growing tendency in contemporary curating to draw upon the pre-disciplinary display tactics of the Wonderchamber. It argues that this " return of the wonderful " in museum and curatorial practice is entangled with the emergence of post-disciplinary knowledge formations.

Discuses issues of methodology in light of the post-truth debate and the challenge of the Donald Trump and Brexit campaigns for teaching and undertaking research methods in the social sciences. The presentation has a strong focus on Majone's notion of craft as well as the (often unacknowledged) importance of ontology and epistemology.

For some time now we have been working both individually and together on a new approach to political economy that does not fit neatly into the standard ways of thinking about political economy as a discipline. Instead, we describe our shared approach as pre-disciplinary in its historical inspiration and post-disciplinary in its current intellectual implications. Of course, we are not alone in refusing disciplinary boundaries and decrying some of their effects. Indeed, there are many signs of increasing commitment among social scientists to transcending such boundaries to better understand the complex interconnections within and across the natural and social worlds. We advocate the idea of a 'cultural political economy' and suggest how it might transform understandings of recent developments in political economy. Before doing so, however, we will situate our proposals for cultural political economy in the broader context of exciting recent developments in political economy.

Com este ensaio, trazemos à discussão o conhecimento construído pós-disciplinarmente, que implica em um modo cognitivo despojado de centros gravitacionais disciplinares e disciplinadores. Para tanto, analisamos qualitativamente as 'vídeo-cartas (não) filosóficas' resultantes de nossa pesquisa de Doutorado, então tramada entre a palavra, a imagem e o corpo. Pretendemos, portanto, apresentar-lhe este trabalho de tal modo que possa ser dele não apenas leitor, mas também leitor-espectador, fazendo com que a camada videográfica que o permeia seja tão presente e visível quanto a dimensão escrita. Assim, delinearemos algumas das nuances do tornar-se um corpo que conhece, na pesquisa acadêmica e para além dela.
