Podhale

During World War II Stanisław Perełka was a partisan of Polish Peasants’ Battalions (Bataliony Chłopskie) in the area of Nowy Sącz. After the communists took over, he joined the independence movement. In 1947 he came out from the underground and surrendered. In the early 50s, he returned to resistance to lead the last partisan group in Małopolska and the one of the last in the whole of Poland, comprised of former underground soldiers. The group also included Józef Walkosz „Buk”, Walenty Sajdak „Karcz” and Józef Oleksy „Bożek”. It was disbanded in 1955 and Perełka was killed during a Security Office (UB) raid.

Artykuły zebrane w XIV tomie „Rocznika Podhalańskiego” są pokłosiem ogólnopolskiej konferencji naukowej „Juliusz Zborowski i jego dzieło”, zorganizowanej w dniach 6–8 czerwca 2019 roku z okazji sto trzydziestej rocznicy otwarcia Muzeum Tatrzańskiego w Zakopanem. Główna idea przyświecająca wydarzeniu była zgodna z wyznaczonymi tej placówce kilkadziesiąt lat temu założeniami, które Juliusz Zborowski przez cały okres swojej pracy na stanowisku dyrektorskim konsekwentnie realizował. Powołane w XIX wieku muzeum miało stać się jednostką o charakterze badawczym. Zborowski planował prace dotyczące muzeum i nimi kierował, udzielał konsultacji, wspólnie z wybitnymi specjalistami poszerzał wiedzę w zakresie nauk przyrodniczych i humanistycznych na obszarze Tatr i Podtatrza i ją upowszechniał. Dążył do stworzenia z muzeum ośrodka koordynującego specjalistyczne badania nad regionem, a zbiory etnograficzne i przyrodnicze miały służyć naukowym opracowaniom na temat przyrody i kultury góralskiej z terenów Podhala, Spisza i Orawy. Zborowski dbał także o zasoby archiwalne, powiększył księgozbiór o kilka tysięcy woluminów dotyczących rożnych obszarów Karpat, a działalność wydawnicza była jednym z głównych kierunków rozwoju zarządzanej przez niego placówki. Zebrane w niniejszym „Roczniku Podhalańskim” artykuły i opracowania dotyczą więc wątków naukowego dorobku Zborowskiego oraz najnowszych wyników badań prowadzonych nad regionem z rożnych perspektyw poznawczych: etnologii, antropologii kulturowej, literaturoznawstwa, historii, dziedzictwa fonograficznego, muzealnego kolekcjonerstwa, archeologii, etnomuzykologii, etnolingwistyki i historii sztuki. Tym samym prezentują wielowątkowy opis postrzeganej rzeczywistości, bliski idei konsekwentnie wdrażanej przez pierwszego dyrektora Muzeum Tatrzańskiego.

Najnowsza publikacja Muzeum Marii Konopnickiej w Żarnowcu to etnograficzno-historyczny esej o nieznanej kolekcji 80 chłopskich listów ze Spisza i Podhala.
Owe listy są fragmentem większej, niestety zaginionej, korespondencji, prowadzonej w końcu XIX wieku przez kilka osób z inteligencji warszawskiej i małopolskiej z mieszkańcami spiskiego Lendaku i podhalańskich Maniów.
Do naszych czasów dotrwały jedynie listy chłopów: Jakuba Bednarczyka – lendackiego woźnicy, Wojciecha Halczyna – spiskiego działacza plebiscytowego, Jędrzeja ¬Bednarczyka – nauczyciela ludowego z Maniów i innych.
Po stu latach epistolografia ta stanowi niezwykle cenny zasób archiwalny do badań Spisza i Podhala. Niesie z sobą nie tylko bogactwo etnograficznych faktów z życia wsi, ukazuje również złożoną problematykę południowych kresów dawnej Rzeczypospolitej, które po 1918 roku stały się areną walki plebiscytowej, wyjazdu Wojciecha Halczyna na konferencję –pokojową do Paryża i rozmów z prezydentem Wilsonem. A wszystko w tym celu, aby Spisz i Orawa zostały przy Polsce. Chłopskie listy to także porcja dobrej literatury…

Excerpt of publishing review
The book „Gazda czy pon?...” can successfully incorporate the aspect of cultural changes, involving living at the countryside with the globalization and civilizational exchange. Above publication is very interesting and can exemplify very traditional region of Poland called Podhale. The cultural exchange processes had very different character here than anywhere else. The process that took over 100 years, created the clash between higher culture and the mass (popular) culture, creating very specific changes clearly visible in everyday life but also in the language itself. Writer of this book Dr. Natalia Maksymowicz named above process the "dual culturalism". Both cultural patterns are being mixed here creating signum tempore of modern image of Podhale and so called highlander way of life. The author strongly based her opinion on cognitive methodology while recognizing emic meaning, which could be identified as seeing the aspect of an issue from the inside-out point of view. She was able to collect very reach in content empirical material and write it in the reader friendly manner. Her experience is based on direct, active and lasting for several years process of living among people of Podhale. It made the results of her research in above monograph reliable, and definitely worth reading. Prof. Dr hab. Anna Szyfer

Streszczenie


Do tej pory koncepcja kulturemów nie była wykorzystywana w pracach, w których badano polski materiał gwarowy. Dialektolodzy zainteresowani leksyką przede wszystkim gromadzili jej zasoby w postaci słowników, tekstów gwarowych i atlasów, z kolei etnolingwiści (zwłaszcza wywodzący się ze szkoły lubelskiej Jerzego Bartmińskiego) zajmowali się językowym obrazem świata utrwalonym w materiale gwarowym. Tak też była opisywana gwara podhalańska. Na podstawie dotychczasowych prac dialektologicznych i etnolingwistycznych nie można jednak odpowiedzieć na następujące pytanie – które słowa (i kryjące się za nimi pojęcia) są szczególnie istotne dla kultury ludowej Podhala? Rozstrzygnięcie tego zagadnienia znajdziemy w niniejszej monografii.
Koncepcja kulturemu była wykorzystywana w przekładoznawstwie, badaniach stylistycznych oraz w etnolingwistyce. W ostatnim z ujęć (reprezentuje je Alicja Nagórko) kulturem jest najbliższy słowom kluczom Anny Wierzbickiej. Kulturemy można więc uznać za ważne dla samoidentyfikacji jakiejś społeczności słowa klucze.
Do typowania kulturemów wykorzystano badania ankietowe, a także analizę tekstów drukowanych i wypowiedzi Górali. Ważną rolę odegrała intuicja badacza. W konsekwencji wydzielono 34 kulturemy. Można przyjąć, że zrozumienie tych właśnie jednostek jest kluczem do zrozumienia kultury podhalańskiej.
Ponieważ kulturemy grupują się w kręgi tematyczne, zostało to odzwierciedlone w kompozycji pracy. W rozdziale Swoi i obcy, który opiera się na uniwersalnej opozycji opisywanej m.in. przez Wiaczesława W. Iwanowa i Władimira N. Toporowa, znalazły się: Góral, gazda, baca, juhas, zbójnik, ksiondz, pán i ceper.
Kolejny rozdział – Wartości zawiera bezpośrednie odniesienia do góralskiego systemu aksjonormatywnego. Ponieważ wyróżniamy (m.in. za Jadwigą Puzyniną) wartości pozytywne i negatywne, ten rozdział został podzielony na dwie części. W pierwszej – Wartości pozytywne znalazły się: Pámbócek, Pániezus, Gaździná Podhála, krzýz, śleboda, honór, robota, ziym i dudki. Do Wartości negatywnych zaliczono biydę i głód.
Ważną grupą kulturemów są jednostki określające tożsamość kulturową. W odniesieniu do Podhala są to: gwara, muzýka, śpiywanie, tániec, ubranie, portki, ciupaga, moskál, oscypek, gorzáłka i owca. Kulturemy składają się również na geografię mentalną, dlatego w monografii omówiono: Podhále, góry, Giewont i hále.
Do opisu kulturemów wykorzystano z pewnymi modyfikacjami definicję kognitywną zaproponowaną przez J. Bartmińskiego, która z powodzeniem została zastosowana m.in. w Słowniku stereotypów i symboli ludowych. Kompletny opis kulturemu obejmuje: 1) etymologię (dotyczy to przede wszystkim jednostek dyferencyjnych); 2) zasięg geograficzny; 3) relacje synonimii/bliskoznaczności i/lub hiperonimii – hiponimii; 4) charakterystykę znaczenia na podstawie słowników gwarowych; 5) derywaty słowotwórcze; 6) zestawienia; 7) kolokacje; 8) odniesienia we frazematyce; 9) odniesienia w folklorze słownym (pieśni, podania, legendy, bajki itd.); 10) odniesienia w literaturze regionalnej (przede wszystkim w pisanej poezji góralskiej); 11) odniesienia w wierzeniach, obrzędach i zwyczajach (wiedza przyjęzykowa); 12) relacje Górali na temat definiowanego przedmiotu uzyskane podczas badań terenowych.
Omówiony w monografii zestaw kulturemów jest niejednolity. Warto dodać, ze jest to zbiór otwarty, który może być poszerzony o kolejne jednostki. Wspólne dla kulturemów jest nastawienie wartościujące oraz patriarchalne (widoczne zwłaszcza w rozdziale Swoi i obcy, w którym wszystkie jednostki są nazwami mężczyzn), a także przynależność do autostereotypu. Kulturemy podhalańskie służą m.in. samoidentyfikacji Górali, realizując (podobnie jak stereotyp) funkcje: psychiczną (ułatwiają myślenie i mówienie o świecie), społeczną (integrują Górali) i poznawczą (przekazują potoczną konceptualizację).
Co nowego do badań etnolingwistycznych wnosi monografia o kulturemach podhalańskich? Przede wszystkim otwiera perspektywę nowych badań. Pożyteczne byłoby zestawienie kulturemów podhalańskich z kulturemami (ogólno)polskimi lub dotyczącymi innych regionów, np. Śląska lub Kaszub. Z pewnością ujawniłoby to podobieństwa i różnice w obrębie szeroko pojętej kultury polskiej, jednak nie na płaszczyźnie zwyczajów lub obrzędów (to już zostało zestawione w pracach etnograficznych) albo słownictwa (służą temu słowniki, a także prace z zakresu historii leksyki), lecz tożsamości. Badania takie można uznać za jeden z celów etnolingwistyki.

Summary

Dialectologists interested in lexis gathered their resources in the form of dictionaries, subdialect texts and atlases, while ethnolinguists dealt with linguistic picture of the world as present in subdialect material. And in such a way was the Podhale subdialect described. However, these works fail to answer the following question – which words are particularly important for Podhale Gorals (highlanders)? It is a question of ethnolinguistics (to be exact – of ethnosemantics), and the answer is contained in the present monography.
The concept of a cultureme has been used in translation studies, stylistics, and ethnolinguistics. In the last conceptualization (represented by Alicja Nagórko) a cul- tureme is closest to Anna Wierzbicka’s key words. Culturemes might be identified as key words important for a community’s self-awareness.
Surveys, analyses of printed texts and Gorals’ utterances were used to identify Podhale culturemes. The researcher’s intuition played an important role. As a result, 34 culturemes were determined. Understanding these units is a key to understanding Podhale culture.
Since culturemes group into thematic circles, the work’s composition mirrors this division. In the Swoi i obcy chapter, which is based on the universal opposition described, among others, by Vyacheslav V. Ivanov and Vladimir N. Toporov, words górál, gazda, baca, juhas, zbójnik, ksiondz, pán and ceper found their place.
The next chapter – Wartości contatins direct references to the Goral axiologi- cal system. Because we distinguish (after Jadwiga Puzynina, among others) positive and negative values, this chapter was divided in two parts. The first – Wartości pozytywne contains words Pámbócek, Pániezus, Gaździná Podhála, krzýz, śleboda, honór, robota, ziym and dudki. Biyda and głód are found in Wartości negatywne. An important group of culturemes contains units defining cultural identity. In relation to Podhale they are: gwara, muzýka, śpiywanie, tániec, ubranie, portki, ciupaga, moskál, oscypek, gorzáłka i owca. Culturemes also comprise mental geography, for which reason the monography discusses: Podhále, góry, Giewont and hále.
Slightly modified cognitive definition proposed by Jerzy Bartminski was used to describe culturemes, which was successfully applied, among others, in Słownik stereotypów i symboli ludowych. The complete description of a cultureme contains:
1) etymology (mainly in differential units); 2) geographic range; 3) relations of synonymy/cognates/hyperonymy/hyponymy; 4) meaning based on dictionaries of subdialect; 5) word formation derivatives; 6) juxtapositions; 7) collocations; 8) ref- erences in phrasematics; 9) references in oral folklore (songs, stories, legends, fair- ytales etc.); 10) references in regional literature (mainly in written Goral poetry); 11) references in beliefs, rituals and customs (paralinguistic knowledge); 13) Gorals’ statements about the defined object gathered during field research.
The set of culturemes discussed in the monography is not uniform. It is worth noting that it is an open set, possible to expand by adding additional units. What culturemes share is evaluation and patriarchy (especially in the chapter Swoi i obcy where all units are of male gender), and also affiliation with autostereotype. Podhale culturemes serve, among others, for Gorals’ autoidentification, by perform- ing (similarly to stereotype) functions: mental (they simplify thinking and talking about the world), social (they integrate Gorals) and cognitive (they share common conceptualization).
What new does Podhale culturemes monography introduce to ethnolinguistic studies? Above all, it opens perspectives for new research. Particularly interesting would be juxtaposing Podhale culturemes and Polish culturemes or culturemes from other regions, for example Silesia or Kashuby. It would certainly reveal similarities and differences among the widely understood Polish culture, however not the custom or ritual level (it has been shown in ethnographic works) or on lexis level (this is the purpose of dictionaries and history of lexis works), but identity. Such research may be considered as one of the aims of ethnolinguistics.

Karol Szymanowski’s visits to Zakopane became an opportunity to meet research-ers studying Podhale’s music folklore and, through them, folk musicians. Szy-manowski’s relations with the latter—contrary to the standards represented by a majority of scholars from the German musicological school of the day—were close, even direct, which had an impact on his perception and experiencing of the music. Szymanowski’s meditative nature made him turn towards the views of representatives of Hungarian music folklore studies rather than represent-atives of comparative musicology. In Szymanowski’s Zakopane period we can find many elements characteris-ing the work of folklorists in the second half of the twentieth century, that is af-ter the anthropological breakthrough in ethnomusicology.

In the case of the Podhale region (the Polish Tatra mountains) we have historical records describing the musical culture reaching the first half of the nineteenth century. This puts the ethnomusicologist in a convenient situation, allowing the reconstruction of historical processes of changing traditions. From the perspective of contemporary research it is interesting to trace the evolution of opinions about tradition expressed by the representatives of the Podhale communities as well as the intelligentsia visiting the region in crowds. This allows us to show how the opinions were formed and what their vision is for the continuation of tradition. Meanwhile, this tradition, located on the Polish-Slovak border (Orava, Spis, Liptov) and influenced by other social groups (intelligentsia, Jews, Gypsies), has undergone numerous changes in the past and nowadays. The person of Bartek Obrochta (1850-1926), the great musical innovator whose legend still forms the social vision of the Podhale musical tradition, will be the case study for discussing the issues described below.

This article presents current situation of Kashubian language, (Upper)-Silesian dialect and
Podhalean dialect of Polish in Poland.
The author describes the current status of the above-mentioned ethnolects / regional languages
both from a generał and a more particular perspective (case studies: Silesians and
Kashubians in Wehrmacht during WWII, collaboration charges, language persecution and discrimination).
Also, some thought is given to the prospects for development and/or autonomy of languages,
dependent as they are on the policy adopted by the Polish state (regarding the level of centralization
and the choice between the ethnic and the civic definition of nation) as well as the
evolution of the European law (European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, Charter
of Fundamental Rights of the European Union).

Wykorzystując kategorię dystynkcji Pierre'a Bourdieu, pokazuję, w jaki sposób na Skal-nym Podhalu muzyka działa współcześnie jako element dystynktywny. Moim zdaniem stanowi ona ważny element kapitału symbolicznego, którym posługują się przedstawiciele góralskiej elity i za pomocą którego budują i podtrzymują społeczne hierarchie. Słowa kluczowe: Podhale, muzyka, dystynkcja, antropologia muzyki Musical distinction of the Skalne Podhale region Using the Pierre Bourdieu's category of distinction I strive to show in what way, in the modern Podhale region, music works as a distinctive element. In my opinion music is an important element of the symbolic capital, which is used by the representatives of the local elite in order to establish and sustain local social hierarchies.

Praca stanowi próbę opisania współczesnej pamięci o muzeum Lenina w Poroninie w oparciu o materiał zebrany podczas badań terenowych na Podhalu w latach 2011-12 oraz źródła historyczne. Część teoretyczna zawiera przedstawienie koncepcji miejsca pamięci wg P. Nory oraz 3 sposobów pamiętania o komunizmie wg Z. Nauruzbayevej. Koncepcje te wykorzystane są następnie do analizy wybranych wypowiedzi rozmówców w rozdziale badawczym, który podzielony jest na 3 podrozdziały dotyczące odpowiednio: pobytu Lenina na Podhalu w pracach historycznych, propagandzie i współczesnej pamięci, wspomnień dotyczących funkcjonowania muzeum, oraz spojrzenia na dziedzictwo PRL z dzisiejszej perspektywy. W zakończeniu przedstawione zostają wnioski dotyczące głównych tematów wspomnień oraz sposobów ich wartościowania.

Publikacje Clifforda Geertza  należą do kanonu lektur antropologicznych, a  zaproponowane przez niego rozwiązania metodologiczne od lat inspirują etnologów. W oparciu o założenia teoretyczne sformułowane przez Mistrza w słynnym szkicu poświęconym common sense przygotowałam wieloletni projekt badawczy realizowany w pierwszej dekadzie XXI wieku. Kategoria common sense posłużyła mi również jako narzędzie analityczne do interpretacji materiałów źródłowych wytworzonych w czasie badań terenowych prowadzonych we wsiach podhalańskich. Konfrontacja tej kategorii ze współczesnym materiałem udowodniła konieczność uzupełnienia perspektywy Geertza o nowe aspekty takie jak: afektualny charakter wiedzy potocznej, silny komponent wyobraźni i niezwykle istotny wpływ mediów współtworzących obecnie common sense. Odniesienie teorii Geertza do współczesności wymusiło też zmianę systemowej wizji kultury i zastąpienie jej nowymi ujęciami lepiej chwytającymi skomplikowany, kłączowaty charakter aktualnych procesów społecznych. Podkreślenie trafności wielu pomysłów Geertza, a zarazem wskazanie konieczności wyjścia poza nie, jest celem tego tekstu.

My article is based on the ethnographic fieldwork, which I conducted between 2011 and 2015 in Podhale region. Analysing my interlocutors’ statements and behaviours, I try to explain what, for modern Górale (people living in the Polish Tatra Mountains), makes up intangible cultural heritage. My interviewees however would never use this term. Instead, they prefer to call it the tradition. Nevertheless I try to indicate that the Górale tradition has a lot in common with the institutional meaning of intangible heritage. There is no easy and clear answer to the question ‘what is tradition for Górale today?’. One way to do so, however, is to combine three aspects which only seemingly are exclusive. The first facet refers to the requirements, which are made (in the opinion of the Górale) by the ‘salvaging’ institutions, such as UNESCO or juries at folklore competitions, etc. The second image of tradition is connected with its touristic exploitation, a crucial factor for the region, being the main source of the income. The third understanding of the tradition can be named the ‘local’ one. It is linked with inner, everyday live of the Górale community. In this article I present examples taken from the musical space of the modern Podhale region, but I am sure that my statements can be easily applied to any other components of the contemporary culture of the Górale. My conclusion is that these three understandings of the Górale tradition are in everyday life strictly connected, together they build up a coherent unity, which realizes and actualizes itself in common practices and actions.

The myth of Józef Kuraś “Ogień” (“The Fire”) and his subordinates has become one of the main elements of Lesser Poland’s identity. The dominant image of those partisans is being created by historians from the Institute of National Remembrance (Polish: IPN) and that is why the article analyzes their statements. The goal is to reflect on the poetics of hegemonic narrative and the means that validate it. The article is inspired, inter alia, by semiology, meta-history and critical discourse analysis studies. The historians’ narratives are juxtaposed with the voices of witnesses of history from the southern part of Lesser Poland, that were collected through qualitative research. Following the grounded theory principles, the aim was to recognize the issues that are most important to the interlocutors and to highlight the key terms. The highlanders’ stories also became a guide while interpreting materials from the IPN’s archives. Testimonies from the fieldwork along with little-known documents make up an alternative narrative about Lesser Poland’s past. What plays an important role within it are relations of the units with civilians, confiscations of private property and the acts of violence done by some partisans. The conducted analysis allows concluding what values are crucial for the historians and the highlanders as well. The differences between them are revealed. As a result, it is easier to understand the course and causes of the memory conflict that is taking place in the region.

Before the war, Wojciech Bolesław Dusza was an inland waterway sailor and in September 1939 he fought in the Pinsk Riverin Flotilla. He managed to avoid being captured by the Germans and became involved in conspiratorial activity in Puławy. Escaping arrest, he left Puławy in 1941 and went to his native Podhale region where in the spring o 1943 he formed a partisan unit. It was the first partisan unit in that area. He adopted the pseudonym Szarota. One of the most important task of the unit was to eliminate Goralenvolk activists who collaborated with Germans. The activities of Szarota helped to put a stop to the development of the Goralenvolk initiative and cnotributed to the revival of a pro-independence mood in Podhale. In order to destroy Szarota's unit, the Germans infiltrated its ranks with spies. The also sent provocateurs who pretended to be partisans. In the autumn of 1943, they managed to destroy the unit and its network of supporters. Wojciech Dusza himself was killed in an ambush organised by gendarmerie and the "navy-blue" police near Biały Dunajec on 7 October 1943.

W  latach 2018–2019 przeprowadziłam etnograficzne badania terenowe na Podhalu w ramach projektu „Małopolska źródłem tradycji”. Jednym z jego części było zadanie pod nazwą: Nowa Akcja Zbierania Folkloru. Projekt jest nawiązaniem do Ogólnopolskiej Akcji Zbierania Folkloru Muzycznego, która odbywała się w latach 1950-1954 na terenie całego kraju. Spośród różnych tematów zaproponowanych przez organizatorów, MCK SOKÓŁ w Nowym Sączu w  specjalnie przygotowanych kwestionariuszach do wywiadu jeden odnosił się do medycyny ludowej. Posłużył on do przeprowadzenia rozmów z  mieszkańcami podhalańskich wsi: Dzianisz, Gliczarów Górny, Ząb. Opracowany materiał jest przechowywany w zasobach archiwalnych MCK SOKÓŁ, a w niniejszym artykule przedstawiam zebrane wypowiedzi, czasami przytoczone w formie cytatów.

Главная цель статьи это выявление автостереотипа гураля (житель Подхаля) на основании данных лингвистического эксперимента. В 2010 г. было проведено исследование, при котором было опрошено 96 человек (студенты Подхальской государственной Высшей школы профессионального образования в Новом Тарге, которые живут в Подхале, являются носителями культуры региона и идентифицируют себя гуралями). Результаты этого исследования показывают, как мне кажется, автостереотип гураля и дополняют исследования, описанные в работе под ред. Е. Бартминьского, Язык – ценности – политика.

The article is focused on identification of ‘Góral’ (the Highlander) autostereotype. It is based on a linguistic experiment which was conducted with 96 students of the Podhalańska Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Zawodowa in Nowy Targ. They live in Podhale and they are carriers of the region’s culture. The results show that they identify themselves as the Highlanders and this identification is the main component of the ‘Góral’ autostereotype. The author’s research fulfill an scientific perspective which was represented by Jerzy Bartmiński and his thesis ‘Język – wartości – polityka’.

Celem artykułu jest omówienie frazemów odnoszących się do pasterstwa owiec jako jednego z najważniejszych zajęć Górali podhalańskich. Scharakteryzowane frazemy dotyczą miejsca wypasu, pasterzy, budowli pasterskich i organizacji wypasu. Kilkanaście jednostek odnosi się bezpośrednio do owcy (barana i jagnięcia).

Krzýz jako podhalański kulturem dotyczący religijności

Badania nad religijnością ludu polskiego początkowo dotyczyły przede wszystkim wierzeń przedchrześcijańskich (słowiańskich). Dopiero w artykule Stefana Czarnowskiego (Kultura religijna wiejskiego ludu polskiego, [w:] Dzieła, t. I, Warszawa 1956, s. 87–107, pierwsze wydanie miało miejsce w roku 1938) religijność specyficzny dla polskiej wsi została ujęta całościowo, synkretycznie, jako połączenie katolicyzmu z motywami ludowymi, które są nieuświadomioną kontynuacją dawniejszych wierzeń.
W niniejszym artykule została wykorzystana koncepcja kulturemów, którą na materiale polszczyzny ogólnej dotychczas rozwijali Jan Ożdżyński, Alicja Nagórko i Hanna Burkhardt. Po uwzględnieniu różnych danych językowych i kulturowych autor wskazał następujące podhalańskie kulturemy dotyczące religijności: KRZÝZ, PÁNBÓCEK, JEZUS (CHRYSTUS), MATKA BOSKÁ LUDŹMIERSKÁ i KSIONDZ. W artykule dokładniej został omówiony kulturem KRZÝZ. Uwzględniono aspekty językoznawczy (zwłaszcza polisemiczność tego hasła i produktywność frazeologiczną oraz zjawisko tabu językowego), folklorystyczny (obecność krzyża jako znaku apotropeicznego w tzw. modlitewkach ludowych oraz motyw Krzýza na Giewoncie w pieśniach i pisanej poezji podhalańskiej) oraz obrzędowy krzyża (używanie krzyża w funkcji apotropeicznej i jako sakramentale, a także włączenie tego symbolu do magii pasterskiej). Zwrócono też uwagę, że w podhalańskim kulturemie KRZÝZ scaliły się wierzenia słowiańskie z chrześcijańskimi, zwłaszcza w tzw. krzýzýku niespodzianym.

This article discusses the highlander culture of the Polish Podhale region. The author presents different analyses
of the Polish highlander culture in order to arrive at a brief historical and ethnographical characterization of the Podhale
region which is indispensable for the description of its local communities and for the understanding of how
exceptional and vital its culture is. The presentation of selected cultural aspects important for preservation and development
of the highland identity (such as dialect, music, singing, dancing and attire) serves the author as an introduction
to a reflection on the significance of the tradition in the era of liquid modernity.

The article addresses the determinants of intergenerational transmission of musical tradition with regard to instrumental skills. By way of exemplification the author uses the results of his own field research conducted among Podhale violinists more than 20 years ago. The starting point is a literature overview which in particular takes into account the 1979 book entitled "Muzykanty" by Franciszek Kotula, which was preceded by an article by Józef Burszta, both of which serve to point to the basic psychological determinants of the education process within the context of the former Małopolska countryside. The author highlights the basic music determinants governing the master-pupil transmission process in order to more extensively adress the socio-cultural determinants of this educational process that took place in Podhale two decades ago. He links his research results to his other study conducted in other regions in Poland, as well as in Lithuania and Indonesia.

A dialect of the Podhale region is represented by three functional styles: the colloquial, artistic and literary style. They differ, among others frequency of use and type of loanwords. The literary style is dominated by Hungarian, Slovakian, Germanisms, Romanian, and in the artistic style (mainly in folksongs (przyśpiewki)) Anglicisms appear. Colloquial style in terms of loanwords is the least expressive, old loanwords belong to the recessive vocabulary, and Anglicisms do not have such a punching force as in joking and ironic folksongs.

The article concerns manifestations of Podhale Gorals’ religious life, beliefs and customs established in testaments, which were published by Kazimierz Dobrowolski in Włościańskie rozporządzenie ostatniej woli na Podhalu w XVII i XVIII w. (Krakow 1933). As it turned out, notaries preparing the documents imposed on testators’ speech filter language and culture. Information on folk beliefs have been so significantly reduced. We learn only that building a house on the site of the fire brings disaster, and the wind is the cause of illnesses and setbacks. Here we find a reference to the ancient worship of mother earth. As for the religious life, Włościańskie rozporządzenie… provides information about boży obiad. The most interesting habits of names to be broadcast siblings of the same name.

Between the history of language and dialectology – vocabulary in testaments from the Podhale region in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries

The following article concerns vocabulary in testaments from the Podhale region which were published by Kazimierz Dobrowolski in Włościańskie rozporządzenie ostatniej woli na Podhalu w XVII i XVIII w. (Krakow 1933). How it can be known, this type of texts is an important source for historical linguistic because they record the regional and colloquial lexis. We can see the same situation in testaments. The article contains a part of legal terminology, names of degrees of consanguinity and affinity, and the appellatives of currencies.
