Dünyadaki sınırlı kaynakların aşırı derecede kullanımı sonucu oluşan küresel ısınma ve sera gazı salınımı dünya sürdürülebilirliğini tehdit etmektedir. Fosil yakıtların aşırı kullanımı, sera gazı salınımının normalden fazla olmasına ve insan sağlığın etkileyen hava kirliliğinin oluşmasına neden olmaktadır. Bu sebeple, kentlerdeki yaşam kalitesi olumsuz etkilemektedir. 1992 yılında Rio'da gerçekleşen Dünya Zirvesi'nde ilk defa uluslararası düzeyde iklim değişikliği ve gerekli önlemler tartışılmıştır. Günümüze kadar düzenlenen iklim zirveleri ile uluslararası düzeyde; enerji tüketimi ve sera gazı salımı konuları tartışılmış, küresel ısınmanın belirli düzeyde tutulması kararı katılımcı tarafların ortak kararı olarak belirlenmiştir. Bu çalışma ile, iklim değişiklikleri ve dünya üzerindeki olumsuz etkileri, gelecek senaryoları literatür araştırması yapılmıştır. İklim değişikliğinin neden olduğu ve gelecekte de artması beklenen dünya üzerindeki olumsuz durum/sonuçlar, gelecek senaryoları uzmanlar tarafından modellenmekte ve kentlerin geleceği ile ilgili farklı sonuçlar ve tartışmalar geliştirilmektedir. Bu sebeple, enerji ve maddenin kullanımı ile ilgili dünya üzerinde geri dönüşü olmayan durum/lardan önce küresel ölçekte önlem alınması gereklidir. Bu hedef doğrultusunda, enerji tasarufu ve enerji kullanımı esnekliğini sağlamayı hedefleyen "akıllı-smart" kavramının; kent, bina, yaşam gibi farklı ölçeklerde geliştirilmesi önem taşımaktadır. Bu çalışma kapsamında, iklim değişiklikleri ve dünya üzerindeki olumsuz etkileri, gelecek senaryoları literatür araştırması yapılmış; kent ve binalardaki yaşam kalitesini iyileştirmeyi hedefleyen ve teknolojiyi bu hedefte bir araç olarak farklı biçim/yöntemlerde kullanan "Akıllı Kent" ve "Akıllı Bina" yaklaşımları incelenmiştir. Bu kapsamda, kentlerde tüketilen toplam enerjinin oldukça büyük kısmını kapsayan binaların enerji verimli ve akıllı olması hedeflenmektedir. Hollanda'nın Amsterdam kentinde yer alan "the Edge Amsterdam" akıllı binası bu çalışma kapsamında örnek olarak irdelenmiştir. Güncel ve gelişmiş teknoloji ve yaklaşımları içeren binada, enerji verimliliğinin sağlanması için bilgi/verilerin kullanımı ve yorumlanmasını sağlayan bilişim ve iletişim teknolojilerinin (ICT-Informations and Communication Technologies) ve enerji teknolojilerininin kullanımı ile; enerji, su ve yiyecek olarak kendi kendine yeten yaklaşımlar gelecek açısından önemli olmaktadır. Sonuç olarak, kentlerin sağlıklı geleceği ve sürdürülebilirliğini hedefleyen, "akıllı" kavramının, kent yaşamının her ölçeğinde kullanılması büyük önem taşımaktadır. Akıllı kent ve şebekelere entegre olmuş ve enerji verimli akıllı binalarla, iklim değişikliği ile ilgili alınacak önemler zincirinin önemli bir halkası olmaktadır.

The objective of this research is to establish the most effective sustainable interior architectural methods and to study the role of interior architect in the integrated design process proposed for the application of these methods in building design. Although offices are taken as an example, essentially most types of new buildings are in the scope of this work. First, special consideration is given to importance of design management to overcome the difficulties that arise in various design stages; integrated design process proposed for this reason is described in comparison to that of traditional design; how and when the design tools can be used is explained. Next, sustainable design is taken into consideration with its environmental, social and economic parameters and the answer to the question of how these factors can be directed by the interior architect is seeked. The contributions of interior architects in early design phases are investigated in an inclusive manner of all the phases of building life cycle. Under this perspective, indoor environmental quality, depletion of natural resources, pollution and economic activities have been studied with regards to the building phases, nature and quality of life and the target values to be used by the interior architect and the methods required to achieve these values have been compiled and evaluated. In this study, the building is handled as a whole and the areas of activity of the other participants with whom the interior architect shall work in coordination due to the interconnectedness of the systems are referred when necessary. As the case study, three examples of large office buildings that had interior architects in their integrated design teams and reached to high performance targets are examined. In conclusion, by giving reference to these successful buildings, light is shedded on the future of interior architecture discipline in Turkey and the steps required to be taken for more sustainable buildings are discussed.

This study presents a retrofit strategy: integrating optimized photovoltaics (PV) in the form of responsive shading devices using a dual-axis solar tracking system. A prototype-based model was fabricated to compare the efficiency of PV in this implementation with the conventional fixed installation. The office building, T1 Empire World in Erbil, was selected as a retrofit case study and for the application of the proposed integration system. In order to assess the effectiveness of the proposed retrofit method, the energy performance of the base case is simulated to be compared later with the energy performance simulations after the integration technique. The amount of generated electricity from the PV surfaces of the integrated shading elements is calculated. The energy simulations were performed using OpenStudio ® (NREL, Washington, DC, USA), EnergyPlus TM (NREL, Washington, DC, USA), and Grasshopper/ Ladybug tools in which the essential results were recorded for the baseline reference, as well as the energy performance of the retrofitted building. The results emphasize that the PV-integrated responsive shading devices can maximize the efficiency of PV cells by 36.8% in comparison to the fixed installation. The integrated system can provide approximately 15.39% of the electricity demand for operating the building. This retrofit method has reduced the total site energy consumption by 33.2% compared to the existing building performance. Total electricity end-use of the various utilities was lowered by 33.5%, and the total natural gas end-use of heating demand was reduced by 30.9%. Therefore, the percentage reduction in electricity cooling demand in July and August is 42.7% due to minimizing the heat gain in summer through blocking the sun's harsh rays from penetrating into interior spaces of the building. In general, this system has multiple benefits, starting with being extremely efficient and viable in generating sustainable alternative energy—which is the global growing concern of today's sustainable development—providing thermal comfort for occupants, and granting a dynamic appearance to the building when the PV-integrated elements rotate according to the sun's position in the sky.

Building Bioclimatic Design (BBCD) understands architecture as a filter between outdoor climate and indoor comfort. This way, it encourages the exploitation of freely available climatic resources, before adding any HVAC system. Therefore, BBCD represents a fundamental strategy for improving energy efficiency in buildings. The climate / comfort comparison in building design determines the passive strategies that are most suitable for a specific climatic context, as well as the level of architectural complexity. In cold climates, it would suggest the use of compact shapes and extremely airtight and insulating envelopes, in order to minimize heat losses while maximizing solar heat gains. However, when combined with high internal gains, these measures might cause overheating problems in the warm seasons. That is the case of office buildings, where cooling equipment is included as default even in cold climates, drastically increasing their energy consumption. It is therefore becoming a necessity to consider here the adoption of passive cooling strategies once identified with warmer climates. The aim of this research is to explore how the theories and tools for BBCD could be applied to cold climate office buildings. In order to study the effect of the different climatic contributors, we will use Building Performance Simulation to analyse relevant cases with EnergyPlus (in combination with DesignBuilder). This will in turn help drawing suggestions on how to adapt the Building Bioclimatic Chart (BBCC) for its application to cold climate office buildings in practice. It is well known that the earlier we apply the measures for energy efficiency, the greater their effect and with higher degree of integration. The BBCC is used in the pre-design phase to determine the most suitable passive strategies for climate adaptation and control, informing the design as early as possible along the process. This study can contribute to the development of zero emission neighbourhoods in cold climates, by improving the energy efficiency of their buildings. Additionally, it complements the existing research in BBCD by extending its application to cold climates and office buildings.

Dünyadaki enerji tüketiminin %50'si ve fosil yakıt tüketiminin %40'ı yapı yaşam döngüsü süreçlerinde ortaya çıkmaktadır. Aynı zamanda bu süreçler, sera gazı etkisi oluşturan maddelerin salınımının %50'sini ve toplam hava kirliliğinin %24'ünü oluşturmaktadır. Bu anlamda, yapıların enerji ve atmosfer ile olan ilişkileri, tüm canlılar için hayati bir önem taşımaktadır. Dünyada birçok disiplin, çevresel sorunların azaltılması konusunda çalışmalar yürütmektedir. Bu çalışmaların bir neticesi olarak ortaya çıkan sürdürülebilirlik ve sürdürülebilir mimarlık kavramı, yapı sektörünün çevresel etkilerinin tartışılmasına olanak sağlamıştır. Bu kapsamda, mimari ürünlerin sürdürülebilirlik düzeylerinin ölçülmesini hedefleyen çeşitli sertifikalandırma sistemleri geliştirilmiştir. Bu sistemlerden biri olan ve ülkemizde de yaygın olarak kullanılan LEED yeşil bina sertifikalandırma sistemi, puanlama sisteminde Enerji ve Atmosfer kriterine büyük bir pay ayırmıştır. Çalışmanın amacı Maslak'taki LEED sertifikalı ofis yapılarının Enerji ve Atmosfer kriteri bakımından sahip oldukları güçlü ve zayıf yönleri ortaya koyarak durum analizi yapmak ve iyileştirici-geliştirici önerilerde bulunmaktır. Bu kapsamda Alsar Maslak No:1, Orjin Maslak, Maslak Link Plaza, Olive Plaza ve Uniq İstanbul projeleri ‘Enerji Performansının Optimize Edilmesi’, ‘Yerinde Yenilenebilir Enerji Kullanımı’, ‘Gelişmiş Yapılandırma’, ‘Gelişmiş Soğutma Yönetimi’, ‘Ölçüm ve Onaylama (Temel Bina-Kiracı Alt Ölçümü)’ ve ‘Yeşil Güç’ açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgularda Enerji ve Atmosfer kriteri açısından Orjin Maslak Binasının en yüksek puanı (18/37), Olive Plaza’nın ise en düşük puanı (8/37) aldığı görülmüştür. Diğer üç bina 37 üzerinden 16 puan alarak aynı performansı sergilemişlerdir. Tüm bina ortalamaları üzerinden ele alındığında ise ‘Gelişmiş Soğutma Yönetimi’ ve ‘Ölçüm ve Onaylama (Temel Bina - Kiracı Alt Ölçümü)’ kredilerinde %80 ile en başarılı olunduğu, daha sonra %60 ile ‘Gelişmiş Yapılandırma’ kredisinin yerine getirildiği görülmüştür. ‘Enerji Performansının Optimize Edilmesi (%34)’ ve ‘Yeşil Güç (%20)’ kredilerinde istenilen performansın elde edilemediği ‘Yerinde Yenilenebilir Enerji’ kriterinin ise hiç kullanılmadığı ortaya konmuştur.

Energy efficient buildings are buildings that consume less energy while also maintaining or improving the comfort conditions for their occupants, compared to the normal building type. Such buildings result not only in less negative impact on the environment, but are economically sustainable and resilient. This study investigated the extent to which building professional firms in Abuja, Nigeria are aware and implement the different energy efficiency design strategies available for deployment in office buildings, in order to ascertain the current level of knowledge and implementation of the strategies within the building industry in the study area. A structured questionnaire was used to gather data from 80 professionals drawn from architectural and engineering firms involved in the design of office buildings in the study area. The data were analysed by descriptive statistics and the results indicate that both the awareness and implementation levels of energy efficiency design strategies by the firms are high. Whereas most (78%) of the respondents are aware of the various energy efficiency design strategies employed in office building designs, few (22%) of them have little or no knowledge of the strategies investigated. On the implementation level, majority (69%) of the participants recorded a high rate, while few (31%) recorded a low rate. The study also found that the strategies the firms are mostly aware of are site planning, natural ventilation and building orientation. Whereas, the three most adopted strategies among the strategies investigated are: building plan and space organisation; site planning and building orientation. Among the recommendations of the study is that relevant stakeholders of the building industry in the country, should provide platforms from time to time for promoting the benefits of energy efficiency design strategies in the country, in order to maintain the high level of understanding and deployment of the strategies by the building professionals that currently exist in the study area. This is envisaged to ultimately lead to curtailing the adverse effects of global warming on the environment in the long run.
