Ett centralt problem i forskningen om lågtysk-nordisk språkkontakt under hansatiden är frågan huruvida språkkontakt spelat en roll i kasussystemets upplösning i de kontinentala nordiska språken. Det är klart att kasussystemets sammanbrott var en komplicerad process, i vilket både språkinterna och språkexterna faktorer ingår (se Norde 1997b:27ff.). I denna artikel kommer jag endast att behandla lågtyskans inflytande som vållande faktor, och då särskilt Wesséns andra hypotes: att de medellågtyska lånorden inte kunde passas in i det inhemska böjningssystemet och sålunda påskyndade dess upplösning.

Связанные с русским языком проблемы в средневековой Ливонии указывают на то, что знание языка не было абсолютным и было ситуативно, довольно ограниченным, а также зависело от авторитета языка, его места в языковой иерархии. Вопрос о том, какой язык использовать в той или иной ситуации, был крайне важным в то время и в остальной Европе. Ливонские ландесгерры, их канцелярии, ганзейские города, а также Новгород, Псков
и позднее Москва не имели общего «культурного» языка, каким был латинский для большей части Европы, который помог бы преодолеть трудности общения.

In the course of the Middle Ages, speakers of Frisian increasingly came under pressure of Low German. Eventually, in the fifteenth century, Low German gained the upper hand, first in writing, but soon enough in speaking too, leading to a complete language shift in the Frisian lands east of the river Lauwers. Previous scholarship on this topic focused on Low German loans in Old East Frisian. However, a detailed studies reveals that also the spelling habits of Frisian scribes reveal an increased Low German interference.

В статье представлены параллельные (на средненижненемецком и русском языках) версии послания в Новгород, составленных в Ревеле в 1425 г. Внимание привлекла идиома, не характерная для обычного формульного состава средневековых официаль- ных писем между Ганзой и Новгородом; ее анализу посвящена статья. Если в немецком это выражение оказывается формулой правовой прозы, восходящей, по свидетельству англосаксонских законов, к древней устной судебной клятве, то для русского эк- вивалента, употребленного переводчиком, не устанавливается юридического значения. Однако общее происхождение этого вы- ражения в обоих языках, связывающее его с раннехристианской молитвой, объясняет и оправдывает его выбор.

The paper deals with parallel Middle Low German and Russian ver- sions of a letter to Novgorod, both composed in the city of Reval in 1425. An idiomatic expresion deviating from the usual formulaic wording of medieval Hanseatic-Novgorodian charters catches atten- tion and requires analysis. In German it is an established expression in legal prose, going back to an old oral oath documented as early as Anglo-Saxon law. Although the Russian phrase used by the translator shows no traces of legal functioning, a common origin traced back to Early Christian prayer, explains and justifies his choice.

The legal Statutes of the German merchants' yard in Novgorod the Great (Saint Peter's yard, in German Peterhof) – the foundation of Hanseatic trade in Russia during the 12th-16th centuries – are presented here in three pivotal versions from the early 13th century, 1361 and 1603. They render a detailed documentary account of the life of the German community: its structure and functions, legal regulations, everday life and contacts with the natives of Novgorod. New editions of the (Middle Low) German texts were made according to the original manuscripts (some of which were thought to be lost in WW2) and accompanied by parallel Russian translations; the version of 1603 is appearing in Russian for the first time. Numerous facsimiles illustrate the manuscripts, now held in 6 European archives and librararies.
A historic and legal document, marking a crucial meeting point of Russian and German cultures, the Scra of Novgorod is equally important to historians, philologists, and students of law; the book will also fascinate everyone curious about some brilliant yet insufficiently known moments of Russia's past.

Три ключевые редакции Новгородской скры (XIII в., 1361 г. и 1603 г.), подробно документирующие все стороны внутренней организации, быта и правового положения немецкой общины в Новгороде, ее взаимоотношений с русским Новгородом, представлены в параллельных (оригинальном средненижне-/верхненемецком и русском) текстах, причем последняя редакция издаётся по-русски впервые. В книге впервые использованы и изучены оригиналы рукописей, некоторые из которых считались навсегда утерянными во Второй мировой войне. Многочисленные иллюстрации представляют оригиналы из 6 европейских архивов и библиотек.
Находясь на стыке двух культур  – немецкой и русской – Новгородская скра представляет большой интерес для историков, юристов, филологов; книга также привлечет всех желающих ближе ознакомиться с яркими, но недостаточно известными страницами отечественной истории.

TThe paper presents a missive from the Grand Duke of Moscow Ivan III declar- ing war to the Grand Duke of Lithuania Aleksander Jagiellończyk on June the 24th, 1500. The missive, so far unaccounted in scientific publications, survives in a Middle Low German translation kept in the archive of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. The declaration of war is motivated by alleged injustices done to Ivan III, to his subjects and to his daughter Elena Ivanovna, who was Alek- sander’s wife. Judging by the particular dialect of Low German, the translation was made in Lübeck. Its literality allows conclusions about the content of the original missive and the sources on which it was based. Analysis shows that the arguments included complaints formulated by Muscovite diplomats after the conclusion of the ‘eternal peace’ of 1494, beginning with the negotiations in 1495. Research on German historical syntax usually stresses the positive impact the development of medieval legal genres and the rising need for unambiguous rules and explicit definition of legal norms has on the improvement of linguistic means of expressing logical and syntactic relations in the Middle High/Low German sentence (Admoni). An analysis of contexts containing legal penalty clauses (mostly pecuniary charge for disciplinary and criminal offences) was carried out on the basis of the Skra of Novgorod (statute of the Hanseatic merchants’ yard in Novgorod). Text versions of the mid 13th century and of 1361 were compared; in several instances evidence from the version of 1392 and the municipal law of the city of Lubeck (Lübisches Recht) was used for a broader evaluation. The results show, that contrary to expectation, ellipsis and syntactic syncretism remained a typical feature of the Low German legal language during the whole period under analysis and was not corrected in later (improved and modernized) versions. Legally meaningful parts of the clauses are regularly omitted and homonymous (or syncretic) expressions occur, thus impairing clear understanding by modern scholars and correct translation for research use. The apparently successful functioning of syntactically compressed texts in legal practice of their time could be explained by contextual support on the part of (a) common legal knowledge of the tradition of German habitual law (before the introduction of Roman law) and (b) intertextual discourse with basic legal codices (the Law of Lubeck). The obtained results are further essential for the correct interpretation and translation of commercial and legal contexts occurring in numerous historical documents pertaining to the relations of Russia and the Hanseatic cities.Keywords: Middle Low German syntax, legal language, syntactic syncretism, ellipsis, Novgorod and the Hansa, Lubeck Law, Skra of Novgorod, medieval charters

Summary
Early Middle Low German written sources from Gotland (the treaty of 1269, the oldest Statute of the Hanseatic Peterhof in Novgorod, and the Visby municipal law) were analised to specify the place and role of the Baltic island in shaping the legal foundations and official language of the Hansaetic merchant community in Novgorod. The Low German used for these texts shows the same Westfalian and Low Saxon dialectal features as would be expected from a community founded by immigrants from these parts of Germany. Thanks to the key role of Visby the German written tradition in Novgorod was based on this specific variant of Low German, accompanied by some Scandinavian features, also found in these eraly texts (like the description Skra which was since exclusively used for the statute of the German community in Novgorod). On the other hand, the Visby municipal law differes from the analysed Novgorod documents by lacking Scandinavian graphemes. To explain this contradiction between histotical context and linguistic fact, the Visby municipal law shoul be viewed against the local tradition of Scandinavan law on Gotland.

This article deals with the origin of the oldest core of borrowed Christian terminology still extant in Icelandic, i.e. those words which were introduced in Old Norse in the period ranging from the first evangelical missions in Scandinavia (9th c.) to the establishment of the archbishopric in Niðarós (1153).

After a short introduction (1), a brief overview of the aforementioned historical period is given (2). The corpus, which consists of 45 words, is subsequently presented alongside its semantic classification (3), of which a chronological (text-based) reading is given. In the next section (4), particular attention is drawn to a sample of ten words, which have been chosen for their importance both from a historico-linguistic and etymological perspective. Special emphasis will be placed on addressing the role of Old Saxon in the dawn of Christianity in Scandinavia and Iceland and on revising some of the etymologies proposed by the three major Icelandic etymological dictionaries (AeW, IeW and ÍOb). In the last paragraph (5), it will be stressed that a methodology which rests upon historical, alongside linguistic and philological, facts is needed if one wants to better understand the cultural and linguistical background of a particular portion of the lexicon: here, the oldest part of the Christian borrowed lexicon is analysed as a particularly interesting example.

Edition einer mischsprachigen Hoheliedpredigt aus dem Umkreis der Reformbewegung des 15. Jahrhunderts in den  Lüneburger Frauenklostern. Die Hoheliedauslegung findet sich auf fol. 60 v-67 r von Mscr.Dresd.A.323 der Staats-und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden, einem Orationale für die Passionszeit. Ausstattung und Inhalt entsprechen dem Typus des spätmittelalterlichen Andachtsbuchs; mit den Maßen 16,0 x 11,5 ist die Handschrift handlich, aber enthält auf den 248 Pergamentblättern dennoch eine große Zahl und Vielfalt an Texten und Exzerpten variabler Länge. Eine einzige geübte Hand beschrieb die Seiten dicht in einheitlicher, schwarzer und roter gotischer Buchschrift, als Schmuck dienen Goldinitialen, über die zum Schutz Schleier genäht sind. Unter den Rubriken, die dem Kirchenjahresablauf von Septuagesima bis Karfreitag folgen, sind Meditationszyklen zusammengetragen, in die auch zwei längere mischsprachige Texte integriert sind, deren niederdeutsche Bestandteile auf den lüneburgischen Raum 2 des 15. Jahrhunderts verweist. 1 Dr. Werner Hoffmann (Leipzig) katalogisiert die Handschrift im Rahmen der ›Tiefenerschließung und Digitalisierung der deutschsprachigen mittelalterlichen Hand-schriften der Sächsischen Landesbibliothek − Staats-und Universitätsbibliothek (SLUB) Dresden‹. Ihm sei ganz herzlich gedankt für den Hinweis auf die Handschrift sowie die Erlaubnis, sein Katalogisat samt ausführlichen Transkriptionen schon vor dem Erscheinen nutzen zu dürfen, ebenso Dr. Thomas Haffner von der SLUB Dresden für die Abdruckerlaubnis. The article is devoted to a study of Novgorodian social terms mentioned in the
Opasnaia Gramota, a charter which secured the inviolability of ambassadors during
their stays abroad; the charter dates from 1472. There are two extant copies of this
document: the original, written in Old Russian, and the contemporary Middle Low
German translation. The Old Russian version was published by Anna L. Khoroshkevich
in 1966. Now an edition of the Middle Low German translation is being
prepared in Germany. By comparing two versions of the same text written in two
different languages, one is able to draw some conclusions about the meaning of
social terms mentioned in the charter. References to ‘well-to-do people’ (zhitii liudi),
‘merchants’ (kuptsy), and ‘black people’ (chernye liudi) are of particular interest. Zhitii
liudi are called ‘well-to-do merchants’ (wolmagenden copluden) in the Middle Low
German translation. Relying on this fact (along with other data), one can assume
that at least in the 1470s, zhitii liudi may have been simultaneously merchants and
landowners. In other words, one can imagine that all zhitii were merchants but not
all merchants were zhitii. The charter shows also that the expression chernye liudi (in
the Middle Low German translation: de gemene lude) in 15th-century Novgorod stood
for the bulk of the common (but free) townsmen, and not for a particular group of
the population that did not possess full rights. Finally, the Middle Low German
translation of the charter clearly indicates that its author considered ‘merchants’
and ‘merchants’ children’ to have been either synonyms or similar terms without
any significant difference apart from some minor negligible nuances. He translates
both with the same expression, coplude kinderen, and distinguishes them from
‘merchants’ elders’ (oldesten kopluden).

This article argues that the dialect of the Norwegian city of Bergen lost the feminine gender already in the 13th or 14th century due to influence from the Middle Low German quantity system: Because Middle Low German, spoken in Bergen by influential Hansa merchants residing in the city, did not have a quantity opposition in unstressed syllables, the quantity opposition in the Bergen dialect was abandoned before the short final -n disappeared. Thus, the dialect lost the gender opposition in forms like eiginn : eigin, and also in many words that often are unstressed, like einn : ein, hinn : hin, etc.

In Winnie the Pooh soll einer der Freunde Christopher Robins, im Buch the Owl genannt, den Typ eines jungen Intellektuellen aus den englischen Knabenschu-len parodieren, und dies soll um die 1900er Jahre klar erkennbar gewesen sein. Egal aber, was uns die Literaturhistoriker erzählen, für den russischen Leser ist the Owl eine weibliche Figur, denn das Wort russ. сова ist weiblich. Und damit wird die ganze (maskuline) Tiergesellschaft in Winnies Wald verändert. Was ist zu tun? Sollte man vielleicht im Russischen die Eule durch einen anderen Vogel ersetzen? Dann würde aber die symbolische Kraft des Eulenbildes verloren ge-hen, denn auch im russischen Kontext ist die Eule ein Symbol für Weisheit und Wissen, auf dem der Autor von Winnie the Pooh, Alan Alexander Milne, seine Ironie baut. Und Kultursymbole eines Volkes sind nicht weniger zäh als die Anforderungen der Grammatik seiner Sprache. In russischen Übersetzungen aus dem Deutschen würden die übernomme-nen Figuren oft das Genus wechseln müssen, und wenn die Vorlage eine engli-sche war – dann würde dort das grammatische Genus erscheinen und oft eine Gender-Markierung mitbringen, wo es sie im Original vielleicht nicht gegeben hat und keine Genus-oder Geschlechts-Bestimmung vom Autor beabsichtigt war. Oft haben diese Wesen aus der Literatur auch noch Namen, und diese sind im Russischen sogar hartnäckiger: Sie gibt es nicht im Neutrum, sondern nur im Maskulinum oder Femininum, und genau in Übereinstimmung mit dem Ge-schlecht des Namenträgers. Sobald eine literarische Figur einen Namen be-kommt, wird ihr Deklinationstyp im Russischen bestimmt und damit oft auch das Geschlecht.

В статье предлагается опыт сочетания данных реального и языкового планов для уточнения языковых и текстовых свидетельств, относящихся к быту обитателей немецких городов Ганзы. Надежность сопоставления археологических данных с информацией из средневековых текстов зависит от правильности языковой интерпретации последних. В статье предложен метод уточнения терминов канализации городов Ганзы XV-XVI в., основанный на использовании хронологически близкого материала из другого региона (Шаффхаузен, Швейцария, XV в.), сочетающего реальный и языковой планы. Находки археологических раскопок в Любеке 2006-2009 гг. привлекаются для интерпретации контекстов из административной книги города (Liber memorialis) за 1318 г.-нач. XVI в. и нескольких исторических документов. Полученные результаты анализа семантики, грамматики и синтаксиса контекстов из Любека позволяют восполнить недостаток данных в тексте, относящемся к Петрову двору в Новгороде, что в свою очередь будет полезно при работе с археологическими находками, которые могут ожидаться в Великом Новгороде. Ключевые слова: Ганза и Новгород, нижненемецкий язык XV-XVI вв., лексика канализационных сооружений, археология средневековых городов.

Deutsch-russische Kulturbeziehungen in Mittelalter und Neuzeit. Aus abendländischen Beständen in Russland.

Der nunmehr vierte Band der internationalen Arbeitsgruppe zur Erforschung abendländischer Handschriften und Drucke in Russland versammelt die Erträge der 5. Tagung in Marburg 2016. Ein erster thematischer Block befasst sich mit abendländischen Beständen in russischen Sammlungen (Moskau und St. Petersburg). Im Zentrum stehen dabei ein St. Petersburger Blockbuch, die Bibliothek Peters des Großen, die dislozierten Halberstädter Bestände sowie "Beutekunstbestände" aus Königsberg. Das Highlight ist der in Jurjewetz an der Wolga wiederaufgefundene Bardewiksche Kodex des Lübischen Stadtrechts – die wertvollste niederdeutsche Handschrift des 13. Jahrhunderts. Ein zweiter thematischer Block kreist um die deutsch-russischen Kulturbeziehungen in Mittelalter und Früher Neuzeit. In den Blick genommen sind u.a. die russischen "Lucidarius"-Übersetzungen, ein "Antichrist-Bildertext", deutsche Dracula-Fassungen und V. M. Schirmunskis Erhebungen der Wenkersätze in der damaligen Sowjetunion.

A significant number of Icelandic sermons survive in manuscript fragments from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, but relatively few of these have been the objects of serious study. The present article is an edition and analysis of one such sermon, now found in two fragments — AM 687 c 1 4to (two bifolia) and AM 667 XVII 4to (one bifolium) — which originally belonged to the same early sixteenth-century manuscript. The text, probably intended for the feast of the Annunciation (25 March), is divided into three sections by its author: (1) a retelling of the Annunciation episode and Christ’s conception, (2) a discussion of the motif of the Seven Last Words of Christ, and (3) an exemplum. Part of the first section and all of the second survive, while most of the third has been lost to a lacuna. The major source of the surviving part of the sermon is the Vita Christi by the fourteenth-century Carthusian Ludolf of Saxony, although the author makes frequent and sometimes significant digressions. The content of some of these digressions and the language of the text, which is notable for its high proportion of loanwords from Middle Low German, suggest that the sermon could not have been composed much earlier its surviving copy (that is to say, earlier than 1500). A probable terminus ad quem for the text is ca. 1540, after which time the diocese of Skálholt (where the text was likely copied) became Lutheran.

Der historische Bestand der Bibliothek des Domgymnasiums in Halberstadt gilt in Fachkreisen als besonders wertvoll. Bereits in den Jahren 1878 und 1881 beschrieb der damalige Rektor des Gymnasiums, Gustav Schmidt, diese Sammlung, die nach 1945 nicht mehr zugänglich war. Auf einer Arbeitstagung der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften konnten erstmalig eine Sichtung der Erschlie?ung deutschsprachiger mittelalterlicher Handschriften in russischen Bibliotheken vorgenommen und der Grundstein fur eine zukunftige Zusammenarbeit der Institute gelegt werden. Der vorliegende Band dokumentiert diese Tagung und enthalt Beiträge zur kultur- und sprachgeschichtlichen Spezifik des mitteldeutschen Literaturraums, zur Geschichte des Halberstadter Handschriftenbestands sowie Analysen ausgewahlter Textzeugen aus der Dokumentensammlung Gustav Schmidt der Lomonossov-Universitä:t Moskau. Er eröffnet die Reihe Deutsch-russische Forschungen zur Buchgeschichte, die mit Tagungsberichten aus Moskau und Marburg fortgesetzt wird.

The paper considers transliterations of the German words and
expressions preserved in the copies of the Russian Lucidarius. The form of these transliterations shows that the source of translation was without doubt the Low German incunable Lübeck 1485 (GW M09355). The questions which transliterations were preserved and why, and also how could the translation process look like are discussed.

Исследование позднеcредневекового материала ономастики из Северной Германии направлено на разработку лингвистически обоснованных принципов передачи средненижненемецких фамилий для задач исторического и филологического изучения, научного перевода и публикации ценного рукописного источника. В центре исследования находятся морфологические и грамматические аспекты развития фамилий в Любеке в период 1318 г.–нач. XVI в. и их передачи средствами современного русского языка.

Bookprinting and the evolution of Hanseatic municipal law.

The paper attempts to explain the late appearance of printed municipal law books in the Hanseatic region in comparison to the rest of Germany. A conservative approach of the cities towards the revision of municipal law and the textual and linguistic reshaping of their legal tradition is shown using a corpus of manuscript and printed sources hosted in Moscow.
В статье исследуются причины позднего появления печатных изданий городского права в Ганзейском регионе по сравнению с остальной Германией. На материале корпуса, включающего рукописные и печатные версии городского права из собраний РГБ, показан определенный консерватизм городов по отношению к правовой, языковой и текстуальной интеграции региональной традиции в национальную систему.

Анализ форм синтаксического эллипсиса в нижненемецких правовых текстах Ганзы XIII-XVв., относящихся к сфере ее связей с Новгородом. Обсуждение причин сохранения этого явления в юридических жанрах и способах функционирования правовых положений в условиях языковой неточности/неоднозначности.
