Library 2.0

Books are not only powerful instruments to disseminate knowledge, but also agents of change. They are sources for joy and personal development as well as inspiration for freedom and democracy, to the extend that they even drive dictators to ban or destroy them. In order to understand better what reading books implies in Marcel Proust’s preface to John Ruskin’s “Sesame and Lilies”, I would like to offer first, as a context, some examples of books in the history of libraries and publishing.

In this scenario Social Networking sites are used as effective media of communication. The social networking sites are a tool to connect people together for common purpose. Now a day’s social networking sites helps to improve library
profession as well as library services. The SNS are totally changed the traditional library services and information tools. Through the SNS library professionals can reach to number of users at time and they are able to provide similar kind of information to large community of the users. The use of social networking sites in library is increasing days by day and it helps to library professionals to build personal interaction with their users.This paper focused on use of SNS by library professionals, their purpose and how SNS are useful to them for improving library services.

Transmitir contenidos ya no puede ser el motor que legitime muchas de las instituciones culturales heredadas.  La escuela, los museos, las bibliotecas, los centros culturales tienen que reinventarse en un nuevo contexto donde encontrar contenidos no sólo es fácil y barato, sino que implica prácticas informales, tecnologías distribuidas y procesos deslocalizados.

La idea de que necesitamos una tribuna desde la que transmitir conceptos, un espacio para comunicar hallazgos, un repositorio para atesorar bienes o un lugar donde reunirnos, va camino de su obsolescencia definitiva. No es que se esté esfumando la necesidad de aprender, sino que es obvio que ahora disponemos de muchas alternativas posibles.

The International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) is a set of common APIs developed to provide access to digital visual material from libraries, museums, and other repositories without the all-too-frequent need for a common viewing application.

By using a common framework to collaborate across institutional silos, Harvard has leveraged the promise of IIIF in multiple functional areas, supporting the adoption of a new Harvard Library Viewer, walls of images in the Harvard Art Museums, and image collections embedded in Canvas and in massive open online courses from HarvardX — all in high resolution, and with unprecedented interactivity.

Com este artigo pretende-se dar a conhecer a importância da comunicação no contexto das bibliotecas, focando o caso dos Serviços de Bibliotecas, Informação Documental e Museologia (SBIDM) [1]. Partindo de alguns dos serviços como o Empréstimo Presencial, Empréstimo Inter-Bibliotecas, Referência, Formação de Utilizadores, Comunicação, Páginas Web e Serviço BAES, serão abordadas diferentes formas de potencializar o fluxo de informação de modo a responder às necessidades info-comunicacionais dos utilizadores, nomeadamente através de formas de comunicação assíncrona, síncrona e multidireccional. 

ABSTRACT
This article demonstrates the importance of communication within libraries, taking as example the Library Services, Documental Information and Museology of the University of Aveiro. We will take into consideration some of the services provided - the Borrowing Service, the Inter-Library Service, Reference Service, User Training, Communication, Web Pages and BAES Service - in order to address different forms to boost the information flux in order to better answer our user’s needs. This will be done through synchronous, asynchronous and multidirectional ways of communication.

This paper provides an overview regarding the characteristics of web 2.0 and its role in imparting knowledge, the characteristics of Library 2.0, the role of university libraries in spreading use of library 2.0 facilities, usage of RSS Feeds, Social Bookmarking, Instant Messaging, and web based chat facilities in the library environment.

New technologies have changed the landscape of libraries and library users. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to present the findings on twenty first century library users' information needs and challenges. Data was collected through an online survey tool called Survey Monkey. The survey was designed to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. Convenient and snowballing sampling techniques were adopted due to the lack of a pre-defined population of study. Therefore, a total of 82 online participants took part in the study. The majority (76%) of the participants expected 21 st century libraries to have spaces for community building. The most expected library facilities were identified as: E-learning class rooms (79%), technology hubs (73%), group-work stations and video-conferencing (68%), and Social spaces (60%). Expected library services were: online reference services (84%), Access to Wi-Fi (74%), personalized library (69%), and OPAC (61%). The major user challenges were: poor internet connectivity (68%), inadequate online services (64%), and, shortage of technological resources (63%).

ICT made real magic and drastic changes in all service sectors along with higher education and library practices and services. The academic environment is changing from formal education to distance and online learning mode because of ICT. Web technology and mobile technology has made great impact on education sector. The role of Open Access, institutional repositories, opens archives and e-publishing trends indicates the shift towards new way of communication on an increasing scale in the students and researchers. E-learning is more popular day by day. The students are more prone towards the use of technology. Users of Web 2.0 tools (Students 2.0) are self learner, self searcher, fast communicators, self publishers, self motivated. There is rapid growth of students using internet and web tools in India. Their expectations from the teachers, libraries, and administrative staff of academic institutes has changed and increased. In developed countries use of Web 2.0, cloud computing technology and its use in educational, library websites are normally used to provide best services with blogs, RSS, instant messaging, social networking services, wikis, and social tagging applications.

Use of web technology in education sector has some advantages and disadvantages too. In short education and library services are now based on digital resources, customized, user based, and web based and internet based information services.The present paper highlights innovation in education sector and libraries and impact of web 2.0 on students, teaching learning process, educational policies. Future 3.0 generation will be discussed in detail.

The following paper will trace the recently established field of Information Ethics through it’s various evolutions, from it’s origins in Librarianship to it’s role as a global player in areas as diverse as technology, media, global humanitarianism, and the philosophy of information. The praxis of the field will be outlined for the uninitiated reader, followed by an intimate history of the founding players and their continued contribution to this ever-evolving field. The current evolutions of Information Ethics will then be explored in the context of their application to the viral global phenomena of Intercultural Information Ethics (IIE), and finally, the paper will conclude with projections towards future evolutions in Information Ethics, as well as an exploration of potential definitions for the field.

Deskripsi bibliografi adalah suatu kegiatan memberikan keterangan lengkap mulai dari judul sampai dengan informasi daerah jejakan.    Pedoman untuk kegiatan ini adalah AACR2 (Anglo American Cataloguing Rules Edisi 2), yang mengadopsi ISBD (International Standard Bibliographic Description)

هدفت الدراسة إلى التعرف على  وجهات نظر المكتبيين العرب في مدى استخدامهم لشبكات التواصل الاجتماعي وروابطها المتوافرة عبر الشبكات وأكثر المواقع وروابطها استخداماً من قبلهم، ودوافع الاستخدام وأسباب عدم استخدام غير المستخدمين لها، وبيان مدى رضا المستخدمين منهم عما تقدمه لهم شبكات التواصل الاجتماعي وروابطها.
تكونت عينة الدراسة من 102 من المكتبيين  من أعضاء جمعيات المكتبات العربية التي لها مواقع على شبكة الانترنت أو من خلال بريدهم الالكتروني المتوافر لدى الباحثين وقت توزيع الاستبيان.
أظهرت نتائج الدراسة إن 84.3% من المستجيبين يستخدمون المواقع الاجتماعية،  وأن أكثر المواقع استخداماً هي Facebook ويليه موقع YouTube، وTwitter وأكثر الروابط المتخصصة في المكتبات استخداماً رابطان هما رابط جمعية المكتبات الأردنية ورابط (OCLC) حيث يستخدمهما 44.1% منهم، ويتلوهما رابط الاتحاد العربي للمكتبات (اعلم) ورابط مكتبة الكونجرس، وأن 90.6% من المستخدمين راضون عما تقدمه هذه المواقع وروابطها لهم. وأن اكثر الاسباب وراء عدم استخدام غير المستخدمين للمواقع عدم علمهم بوجودها ووجود مجموعات متخصصة في علم المكتبات عليها.
وتبين كذلك أن هناك فروقاً ذات دلالة إحصائية عند مستوى الدلالة (a:≤ 0.05)  بين وجهات نظر المستخدمين تعود لمتغيري الجنس ومدة الاستخدام، بينما لا توجد فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية عند مستوى الدلالة تعود لمتغير المؤهل العلمي والمهنة.
وأوصت الدراسة بعدة توصيات منها قيام جمعيات المكتبات في الوطن العربي والاتحاد العربي لجمعيات المكتبات العربية بزيادة توعية المكتبيين العرب بمواقع التراسل الاجتماعي وروابطها المتخصصة في المكتبات والمعلومات  وبأهمية الإفادة منها في المجال الإداري والبحثي والتدريسي.

This article is about different forms of communication between library staff and library users at the Library, Documental Information and Museology Services of the University of Aveiro. We will take into consideration some of the services provided – especially in the Main Library – like the Selective Dissemination of Information Service (SDI), Web 2.0 platforms, Inter-Library Loan (ILL), Circulation Desk, the Reference Service, User Training and Information Literacy sessions, BAES Service (Higher Education Open Library), so as to address different forms to boost the information flux in order to better answer our user’s needs.

Sekolah yang bermutu harus memenuhi Standar Nasional Pendidikan (SNP), antara lain yakni kurikulum yang dinamis, proses pembelajaran yang berorientasi dan mengembangkan kreativitas siswa, serta sarana dan prasarana yang lengkap.  Perpustakaan sekolah merupakan salah satu sarana sangat penting yang bertugas menyediakan bahan pustaka untuk mendukung Proses Pembejalaran (PB) di sekolah. Namun demikian kebaradaannya selama ini belum mendapat perhatian serius dari institusi pendidikan terkait. Di beberapa sekolah, terutama tingkat Sekolah Dasar (SD) dan Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP), perpustakaan masih diposisikan sebagai pelengkap proses pembelajaran. Kenyataan tak jarang dijumpai adanya sekolah yang masih “menumpang” ruang kelas, ataupun hanya dibatasi oleh sekat kayu sehingga ruang perpustakaan sangat terbatas. Kondisi itu masih bisa dijumpai di perpustakaan sekolah SD dan SMP di Kota Semarang. Berdasarkan kunjungan Tim Pengabdi ke sejumlah sekolah dan wawancara terhadap para pengelola perpustakaan tersebut, maupun dari beberapa pelatihan pengelolaan perpustakaan yang diselenggarakan oleh Pustakawan Unnes melalui Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat, diketahui bahwa tidak sedikit sekolah yang belum memiliki perpustakaan yang terkelola dengan baik. Perpustakaan tersebut pada umumnya dalam kondisi; (1) Koleksi bahan perpustakaan belum diolah sesuai standar baku, (2) Penempatan buku di rak tidak sesuai nomor panggil (call number), (3) Inventarisasi bahan perpustakaan belum sesuai standar, (4) Layanan sirkulasi perpustakaan belum maksimal karena pustakawan terbebani dengan tugas mengolah buku, (5) Sekolah tersebut belum memiliki pustakawan/tenaga pengelola perpustakaan yang memiliki kecakapan khusus tentang pengelolaan perpustakaan. Oleh karena itu, peran serta masyarakat maupun organisasi sangat penting dalam penyelenggaraan dan peningkatan mutu perpustakaan. Hal ini membuktikan bahwa keberadaan perpustakaan sangatlah penting, baik bagi sekolah maupun masyarakat sebagai wujud partisipasi mereka dalam memajukan bangsa melalui penyebarluasan informasi. Berdasarkan permasalahan tersebut, maka kemampuan tenaga pengelola perpustakaan SD dan SMP di Kota Semarang perlu ditingkatkan, sehingga diharapkan peran perpustakaan sekolah dalam mendukung proses pembelajaran akan semakin meningkat. Sebagai wujud peran masyarakat tersebut yakni Pustakawan Unnes yang tergabung dalam Tim Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat akan mengadakan kegiatan pengabdian dibidang pengelolaan perpustakaan. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan pada kurun waktu bulan Juni hingga November 2016, dengan mitra sasaran pengelola perpustakaan sekolah se Kota Semarang. Adapun kegiatan yang telah dilaksanakan berupa survey ke sekolah-sekolah mitra dan pelatihan manajeman/pengelolaan perpustakaan sekolah yang diikuti oleh 19 peserta, berasal dari pengelola perpustakaan sekolah dan pemerhati perpustakaan di Semarang dan sekitaranya. Sedangkan kegiatan pelatihan dilaksanakan pada tanggal 28 – 30 Juli 2016 di UPT Perpustakaan Universitas Negeri Semarang.

يمكن ملاحظة تأثير مصطلح الجيل الثاني من الويب في ظهور اللاحقة 2,0 في كل قطاعات المعرفة، مثل الجيل الثاني من التعليم الإلكتروني، والجيل الثاني من المكتبات، ومؤسسات الجيل الثاني، وهذه المصطلحات لها روابط واضحة مع مصطلح الجيل الثاني من الويب، واصفا مبادئ تطبيقات  الجيل الثاني من الويب، واستخدام تقنياتها في  محتوى التعليم الإلكتروني ، والمكتبات والمؤسسات. وقد تم صياغة مصطلح الجيل الثاني من المكتبات في مدونة يطلق عليها أزمة المكتبة= LibraryCrunch .
ولقد تغير مفهوم المكتبة من مبنى يضم مجموعة من المقتنيات، ثم انتقلت إلى نظام إدارة المكتبة المتكاملة على شبكة الإنترنت بفهارس قائمة على الويب، ثم أتاحت المكتبات خدمات الويب مثل مواقع الويب، الكتب الإلكترونية، والدوريات الإلكترونية، وقواعد البيانات في خدماتها والتي تتيح للمستفيدين من المكتبة إمكانية استخدام مقتنياتها دون دخول المكتبة، وتمتد الإتاحة إلى 24 ساعة يوميا/ 7 أيام. 
ولقد أصبحت المكتبات قوية في كيفية تقديم هذه الخدمات للمجتمع وماذا تقدم، وعليها أن تتواكب مع المتغيرات الحديثة لتلبي احتياجات المستفيدين المختلفين، ولقد ظهر مصطلح الجيل الثاني من المكتبات وأصبح يتردد كثيرا، لكن ماذا يعني هذا المفهوم بالضبط؟
وتركز هذه الدراسة على التعريفات المختلفة للجيل الثاني للمكتبات وكذلك المفاهيم المختلفة التي ظهرت حوله، وتحلل هذه الدراسة الروابط بين الجيل الثاني للويب، والجيل الثاني للمكتبات، وتناقش الفوائد المستفادة من تطوير خدمات المكتبة باستخدام أدوات الجيل الثاني للويب. وتميز هذه الدارسة تكنولوجيا الجيل الثاني من الويب مثل المدونات والويكي والشبكات الاجتماعية والتيجان والتغذية المرتدة الخاصة بملخص المحتوى الوافي وتسجيلات الوسائط المتعددة أو البودكاست والرسائل الفورية مع اقتراح بعض التطبيقات التي يمكن للمكتبات العربية الاستعانة بها لتكامل هذه التكنولوجيا لتقديم أفضل خدمات للمستفيدين.

Abstract
We can see the impact of the term Web 2.0 in the emergence of the subsequent 2.0 in all sectors of knowledge, such as e-learning 2.0, libraries 2.0, and institutions 2.0. These terms have clear links with the term Web 2.o, describing the principles of the Web 2.0 Applications, and using technologies in e-learning content, libraries and institutions. The term Library 2.0 was drafted in a blog called Library Crunch.
The concept of the library has changed from building houses  with many collections of information sources, to the integrated library management system online with catalogs list on the Web, and then libraries Web allowed services such as Web sites, e-books, e-journals, and databases in services which allow users the ability of using their holdings without entering the library, and access extend to 24 hours a day / 7 days. Libraries have become strong in how to provide these services to the community and what they provide, and it has to keep pace with modern changes to meet the different needs of users. Library 2.0 has emerged and became frequented a lot, but what does this concept mean ?
This study focuses on the different definitions of libraries 2.0, as well as the various concepts that have emerged around it; analyzes the links between Web 2.0 libraries 2.0, and discusses the benefits learned from the development of library services using the tools of Web 2.0; distinguish Web 2.0 technologies, such as blogs, wikis, social networks, Bookmarks, RSS, podcasts and instant messages; to suggest some applications suitable for Arab libraries which can use them to integrate this technology to provide the best services to users.

This research project was conducted through descriptive method of questionnaire and Interview schedule  to gather information on access and utilization of Web 2.0 tools and Social networking sites at Jomo Kenyatta Memorial Library the main library for the university of Nairobi.The researcher established that university of Nairobi Library staff uses Web 2.0 tools and social networking sites such as Youtube, Facebook and twitter to create online visibility,connect with students,publish library events, provision of information literacy and also networking among Library staff.However despite the fact that university of Nairobi students are technosavvy, among the 35 students who participated in the study only 6 students (3Female and 3 Male) were able to identify the types of web 2.0 tools and social networking sites such as Youtube and Facebook with twitter which are linked to the university of Nairobi Library website.Facebook was widely used at the rate of 80% by students in connecting with the library staff and ask questions on use of electronic resources and other information resources. The researcher established that the university of Nairobi Library has not marketed these Web 2.0 and social networking sites to enhance their access and utilization in addition challenges such as in-adequate time for the library staff to facilitate the use of these library 2.0 tools, Unstable wifi in the library and regular power-outage were some of the  reasons why these Web 2.0 tools and Social networking sites have not been accessed and utilized by many students.

El trabajo de investigación que se presenta quiere dar respuesta a la pregunta sobre la rentabilidad de las bibliotecas en la web social.
Las bibliotecas llevan años usando las aplicaciones y servicios de la web social, tanto para sus tareas como gestoras de comunidades y contenidos como para la formación y el
marketing.
El uso de los medios sociales por las bibliotecas y las organizaciones en general está muy extendido, alcanzando un punto de madurez. Los medios que más utilizan las bibliotecas son Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Blogs y Flickr.
En el contexto del marketing y las relaciones públicas, los fines que las organizaciones tienen en estos medios son aumentar las ventas, ahorro de costes, mejorar la satisfacción del usuario y la reputación de la marca. Estos fines también son de aplicación a las bibliotecas.
Para demostrar que se han conseguido estos objetivos, es decir, la rentabilidad de las actividades de las bibliotecas en la web social, hay que utilizar métricas que demuestren el retorno de la inversión que se ha realizado.
Demostrar el ROI de los medios sociales es difícil, pero no imposible. Los medios sociales son más eficaces para conseguir engagement y participación del usuario y su compromiso
con la marca.
Por otro lado, no existen métricas normalizadas y asumidas por todas las organizaciones que permitan una evaluación de las actividades propias y la comparación con la competencia.
Solo existen recomendaciones.
En esta investigación hemos creado un cuadro de métricas basándonos en las recomendaciones de los expertos, las prácticas de las bibliotecas y la experiencia de la autora. En este cuadro se contemplan métricas o indicadores clasificados por los objetivos de negocio o tácticos y estratégicos. Los objetivos de negocio son Alcance, -la audiencia a la que se llega; Frecuencia de la actividad que realizan las bibliotecas en cada medio social; Fidelización, -tráfico a la web de referencia de la biblioteca procedente de los medios sociales; Influencia, -percepción de la marca; Participación, -engagement, interacción; Conversión, -el uso que se consigue de la biblioteca gracias a los demás objetivos de negocio.
Los indicadores que se han incluido son tanto métricas de vanidad como de acción e impacto, se componen de valores absolutos y de tasas o porcentajes e incluyen variables sumatorias.
Se contemplan también métricas para el contexto competitivo, para compararse con la competencia y métricas que ponen en relación varias métricas como las tasas de participación.
Se presenta también un mapa mental con herramientas, aplicaciones y utilidades de interés para la monitorización y evaluación de los indicadores.
El cuadro de métricas e indicadores ha servido de base para la recopilación de los datos mensuales de 18 bibliotecas españolas, universitarias, públicas, especializadas y escolares,
sobre la actividad que realizan en los medios sociales durante el año 2012. A partir de estos datos se ha valorado la evolución temporal de los mismos, identificándose comportamientos
similares en las bibliotecas por tipo de bibliotecas y por objetivos de negocio. Se han aplicado técnicas de correlación y regresión para ver la dependencia entre las variables.
Se han encontrado evidencias, establecido correlaciones e identificado variables predictoras.
No se ha encontrado un modelo matemático de predicción pero si se han localizado variables predictoras, en mayor medida de las variables del objetivo Conversión.
La actividad que se desarrolla en los medios sociales influye en el tamaño de la audiencia, al resultar las variables de Alcance dependientes de las de Frecuencia de la actividad. La actividad que se realiza en los medios sociales es predictora de los demás objetivos de negocio pero no depende de las demás variables. Parte de las variables de Fidelización, las visitas procedentes de los medios sociales que han llegado a la web de referencia, mantienen dependencias con variables web de Conversión, pero también dependen y son predictoras del resto de los objetivos de negocio. Las variables de Influencia son predictoras de variables de Participación ya que son el paso anterior a la interacción del usuario. Las de Participación han resultado dependientes de variables de todos los objetivos. Participación es el objetivo que todas las organizaciones quieren conseguir en los medios sociales, los objetivos no ROI y han resultado predictoras pero sobre todo dependientes. Las variables de Conversión han resultado también dependientes de todos los objetivos. Conversión es el objetivo final de toda acción en los medios sociales, el ROI, el retorno de la inversión. La mayoría de las variables del resto de los objetivos es predictora de las variables de Conversión y en menor medida depende de ellas. Por tanto puede afirmarse que las actividades que se realizan en los medios sociales son rentables para la institución ya que pueden conseguir beneficios ROI y no ROI.
Sin embargo la forma más eficaz de demostrar ese ROI es a través de la planificación de un plan de marketing o campaña de promoción. Una campaña de promoción de tres meses es
suficiente para conseguir y demostrar la rentabilidad de las actividades en la web social que lleva a cabo una biblioteca. Se ha planificado una campaña de promoción en medios sociales
que convierta las acciones en la web social en ROI, en beneficios de Conversión, durante un periodo de tiempo de tres meses, para tres nuevas bibliotecas universitarias. En los tres casos
se comprueba que las bibliotecas han conseguido sus objetivos, centrados todos en un mayor uso de la colección o de los recursos, en el plazo estipulado de tres meses. Incluso en algún
caso, los resultados han superado las expectativas.
Presentamos unos cuadros o batería de indicadores para controlar y evaluar los resultados que se están obteniendo de la actividad en los medios sociales y poder de esta forma
demostrar su rentabilidad. Se dividen en métricas clave e indicadores por medio social.
El cuadro de Métricas clave debe usarse para realizar un seguimiento y evaluación general de las cuentas que se mantienen en la biblioteca y los resultados que se están obteniendo a lo largo del tiempo. La batería de indicadores por medios sociales debe usarse para su integración en un plan de marketing digital, para medir un programa de marketing concreto, una campaña y comprobar si se están alcanzando los objetivos. Estos indicadores dependen de los canales que se hayan utilizado. En este caso no hay indicadores que valgan para todo, sino que van a depender del objetivo que se quiera conseguir.
La batería de indicadores que se presenta puede estar sujeta a variaciones por la propia evolución de los medios sociales. Las estadísticas y funcionalidades de los mismos varían continuamente por lo que hay que tomar esta propuesta de métricas en permanente evolución.

This paper demonstrates work undertaken by Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) Library in an effort to integrate web 2.0 technologies in its functions to enhance the quality of its services in Tanzania

Design/methodology/approach - The study conducted an exploratory questionnaire survey to assess user requirements among undergraduate medical students at MUHAS, developed library 2.0 services, conducted training and created awareness.

Findings - The paper shows that web 2.0 technologies can be implemented effectively according to University goals, user’s needs, deployment of user friendly tools, and capacity building among librarians and users. Students positively supported the adoption of library 2.0 services at MUHAS. Library 2.0 services improved the quality of MUHAS library services, despite various challenges related to infrastructure, awareness, literacy, inadequate staff, security and ownership of web 2.0 services.

Research limitations/implications - The study findings may not be widely replicated because this article is based on a case study of the integration of web 2.0 technologies into the library functions of MUHAS. This study did not examine the use of library 2.0 applications among library users (such as faculty and students) which could illuminate further the case study

Practical implications - Most academic libraries in Africa have not yet adopted web 2.0 technologies to improve their services. The user preferences, technology adoption, and challenges faced from the present study can help other libraries to plan and integrate their library 2.0 technologies in their services.

Originality/value - MUHAS library offers practical example of how web 2.0 services can be adopted to enhance the quality of academic library services in an African context. This paper is of significance to academic libraries that are still considering their options with regard to the application of web 2.0 technologies.

""As map-based visualizations of documents become more ubiquitous, there is a greater need for them to support intellectual and creative high-level cognitive activities with collections of non-cartographic materials — documents. This dissertation concerns the conceptualization of map-based visualizations as tools for sensemaking and collection understanding. As such, map-based visualizations would help people use georeferenced documents to develop understanding, gain insight, discover knowledge, and construct meaning.

This dissertation explores the role of graphical representations (such as maps, Kohonen maps, pie charts, and other) and interactions with them for developing map-based visualizations capable of facilitating sensemaking activities such as collection understanding. While graphical representations make document collections more perceptually and cognitively accessible, interactions allow users to adapt representations to users’ contextual needs. By interacting with representations of documents or collections and being able to construct representations of their own, people are better able to make sense of information, comprehend complex structures, and integrate new information into their existing mental models. In sum, representations and interactions may reduce cognitive load and consequently expedite the overall time necessary for completion of sensemaking activities, which typically take much time to accomplish.

The dissertation proceeds in three phases. The first phase develops a conceptual framework for translating ontological properties of collections to representations and for supporting visual tasks by means of graphical representations. The second phase concerns the cognitive benefits of interaction. It conceptualizes how interactions can help people during complex sensemaking activities. Although the interactions are explained on the example of a prototype built with Google Maps, they are independent of Google Maps and can be applicable to various other technologies. The third phase evaluates the utility, analytical capabilities and usability of the additional representations when users interact with a visualization prototype – VIsual COLlection EXplorer. The findings suggest that additional representations can enhance understanding of map-based visualizations of library collections: specifically, they can allow users to see trends, gaps, and patterns in ontological properties of collections.""

Perpustakaan adalah sebuah lembaga yang diwajibkan ada di setiap institusi baik pemerintahan maupun komersial. Perpustakaan dibangun atau dibuat untuk memenuhi kebutuhan informasi warga institusi. Informasi yang disediakan oleh perpustakaan dapat berbentuk tercetak maupun non-cetak (Suharso, Sudardi, Widodo, & Habsari, 2018). Informasi yang berbentuk tercetak dapat berupa buku, jurnal, almanak, bibliografi dan lain-lain. Sedangkan informasi yang berbentuk non-cetak merupakan informasi yang hanya dapat diakses melalui media elektronik karena sifatnya yang digital. Contoh dari informasi digital adalah jurnal elektronik, buku elektronik, perekam suara, video, dan lain-lain (Aan & Heriyanto, 2013). Selain menyediakan informasi, perpustakaan juga mempunyai fungsi sebagai lembaga pendorong minat baca warga institusi. Dengan gerakan gemar membaca diharapakan dapat menambah wawasan dan pengetahun yang lebih baik bagi warga institusi. Seiring dengan perubahan dan perkembangan jaman, teknologi menjadi lebih berkembang, perpustakaan tak lepas dari perkembangan teknologi tersebut. Saat ini sudah banyak perpustakaan yang sudah mengembangkan dirinya menjadi perpustakaan modern yang telah banyak memanfaatkan teknologi dalam setiap kegiatan perpustakaannya (Susanto, 2010). Menurut bentuknya, perpustakaan dapat dibagi menjadi tiga bentuk yaitu perpustakaan umum, perpustakaan sekolah, dan perpustakaan perguruan tinggi. Hal yang akan dibahas dalam laporan ini adalah perpustakaan perguruan tinggi. Perpustakaan perguruan tinggi dibangun untuk memenuhi kebutuhan informasi warga perguruan tinggi yaitu mahasiswa, dosen, karyawan, dan masyarakat sekitar, atau bahkan civitas akademik perguruan tinggi lain. Namun, terkadang kebutuhan informasi warga universitas tidak dapat dipenuhi oleh perpustakaan perguruan tinggi.

An ideal library makes every last patron feels what it is like to have their own library where one can traverse a world of knowledge, and then build their personal learning environment. Parallel to this conception is the intensification of fine-tuning the conventional librarianship to transform it into a center for new digital learning. As a contribution to this digital revolution, this paper presents an innovative way of renovating the house of dusty books into the center of creativity, research, and partnership through the fusion of traditional librarianship, self-service solutions, and human-computer interaction. The self-service system employs technologies and modalities such as touch screen-assistive technology for the kiosk terminal with the inclusion of a built-in camera, speaker, microphone, and lights, Automatic Speech Recognition, Radio-Frequency Identification and Content-Based Image Retrieval for holdings circulation and monitoring. In conformance with the ISO 9241-210 (Human-centred design for interactive systems), a series of user-centered evaluations were accomplished to obtain early feedback, and to validate that the user requirements have been satisfied at a later stage of the project cycle. To integrate a humanistic approach, the HCSDLC, or Human-Centered Systems Development Life Cycle Methodology, was utilized to complement the four main user-centered design activities specified in the ISO 9241-210 standard. The prototype designs and final self-service library system were assessed in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, and user satisfaction using metrics defined in the ISO/IEC 25022.

The place of academic library in national development cannot be underestimated. Despite its central role in nurturing tomorrow's  leaders, it preserves for posterity a country's intellectual heritage in the form of indigenous  resources and provides for education and research. This responsibility was carried out with prints until the turn of century which ushered in ICT. Consequently, intellectual heritage becomes ubiquitous without being bound to space and time . Further to that the role of academic librarians still remains the same fundamentally but  changed in the ways and means of actualisation. By implication the human capacity needed for this changing roles changed . Hence a survey was carried out to determine the efforts of Nigerian university libraries towards ensuring staff capacity with focus  on  availability of policy for staff development in Nigerian University libraries , the extent of the policy implementation, challenges to these efforts and ways of ensuring sustainable policy development and implementation.Questionnaire responses from twelve federal university libraries in Nigeria show that they have well developed staff development policies which are implemented in the areas of justification  for training, responsibility for training , category of staff  to be trained, type of training , method of training , documentation of training as well as location of training. Finance and lack of professional collaboration are considered the major challenges to effective capacity building in Nigerian University libraries.

This paper is a case study of Shivaji Mahavidyalaya Library. The Paper highlights on the best practices suggested by the NAAC and practices adopted in the Shivaji Mahavidyalaya library, Udgir.

This paper describes a case study, which looks at the use of e-books among Information Technology (IT) undergraduates at an academic library in Malaysia. The study aims to investigate on the usage of e-books among IT students and identifies the possible factors that might lead to their use or non-use. It focuses on identifying the places and situations where students access e-books, their reasons for use or non-use and their preference of using an e-book to printed book. The study employs questionnaire as the data collection instrument. The findings are based on a total of 206 returned questionnaires from IT students who were selected based on programmes and semesters using the stratified random sampling technique. The results revealed that there was positive acceptance of e-books among IT students, even though the level of e-book uses was low (39%). The students became aware of e-book service mainly while visiting the Library website, or were referred to it by their lecturers, friends or the librarians. About 70% rated positively on the e-book service. Users indicated e-books were easy to use, while non-users preferred the printed text and professed lack of knowledge on its use. Generally, both users and non-users of e-books preferred to use the printed version of textbooks especially if the text was continuously used. The majority preferred to use e-versions of reference sources. There were significant difference between past usage of e-books and preference for electronic textbooks and reference books. The student's use or non-use of e-books was greatly influenced by a number of interacting variables, which comprise their ICT competencies, their cognitive makeup, the degree of user access to the e-books and the functional or use factors.

Companies, to keep pace with the rapid changes of the markets, have a strong need for every available tool to understand these phenomena in order to anticipate them. In a similar way the library is deeply rooted in the dynamic cultural fabric of society, needs to organize its activities in the light of the relationship between itself and the users.
Modern GIS technology can be a useful tool for the analysis of the territory for the strategic planning of its services because it offers the possibility to combine, organize and manage datasets of different nature and view them through easy to understand thematic maps.

The Digital Library Studio (DLS) and Social Library Network (SLN) projects are information service concepts based on interactive and interaction values in the library. These concepts accommodate professional needs behaviour using social networks as the media for dissemination of information. The purposes of the DLS and SLN projects are to increase knowledge and to support life-long learning of the library’s communities in the digital era. The DLS provides services based on user’s preferences, such as music, novels, poetry, movies and travel. The DLS also accommodates the creative works of a library’s users through interactive online applications, such as games, productivity, education, and design. On the other hand, the SLN provides social space for users to share information with other users through the library’s website. The DLS and SLN concepts are integrated into web-based library automation system software using a content management system (CMS) as a platform to support features from online application providers and social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Linked In, and Google+. The DLS and SLN concepts will enhance the roles of libraries and librarians in developing a knowledge and information sharing culture in the digital environment. In addition, the DLS and SLN are able to provide space for creativity and interaction for the community. These concepts will become the new wave services in both present and future libraries.

The attempt to establish a unified taxonomy for the field of Information Ethics is both unattainable and unwarranted. The categorization of Information Ethics as a defined discipline, an applicable practice, a philosophy and a worldview remains constantly in flux due to, what Luciano Floridi terms, ‘philosophical naturalism’. As such, a broadening understanding of the field will only serve to further collapse categorization. The following paper will outline, using a discourse analysis methodology, how the nature of the field of Information Ethics at a foundational level must necessarily defy classification. The assumptions behind the current classifications of the field will be questioned. Beginning with the history of the inception of the field through Librarianship and Cybernetics and questioning the yet unresolved ontological debates between information philosophers such as Rafael Capurro and Floridi, this paper will explicate how any such attempt to develop an agreed upon taxonomy will and should always remain incomplete.

Dünyanın pek çok farklı yerinde Türkçe el yazması eserler bulmak mümkündür. Hindistan’ın kuzeyinde, Uttar Pradesh eyaletinde bulunan Rampur kenti de, el yazması eserleri barındıran kültür merkezlerinden birisidir. Bu şehirde bulunan Raza Kütüphanesinde, birçok Türkçe el yazması eser mevcuttur.
Bu çalışmada, Raza Kütüphanesinde bulunan Türkçe el yazması eserler hakkında kısa bilgiler verilmiş, eserler muhtevalarına göre tasnif edilmiş ve “Raza Kütüphanesi Türkçe El Yazma Eserler Kataloğu” Latin harflerine aktarılmıştır.

ABSTRACT
Turkısh manuscripts can be found in many different parts of the world. Rampur, which located in the state of Uttar Pradesh at North of India, is one of the shelterer cultural centers of manuscripts. There are many Turkish manuscripts in Raza Library which located in this city.
In this study, it was given a brief information of Turkısh manuscripts in Raza Library, Works were classified according to the their contents and “Raza Library Catalogue of Turkish Manuscripts” were transferred to the Latin alphabet.

More and more, interest in the way data is displayed on screen has increased,
especially with the increase in the number of people using e-text for learning purposes. So,
this requires more focus on factors that affect screen legibility. Text display factors, such as
font size, line length and font type, have an impact on reading online. Two font types [Arabic
Traditional and Simplified Arabic] in four different sizes [10, 14, 16 and 18] are measured
using Arabic text. On-line processes were measured using reading –aloud technique.
Accuracy of reading was also measured by the average of errors that students made when
reading the text, while reading speed was tested by the time it took students to read the text.
However, results indicated that Arabic text in font size 10 is not readable to students aged 10
to 12. On the other hand, font sizes sixteen and eighteen are more readable than any smallersized
font, the averages of error size 18 improve in all font types, while age has a significant
impact on reading speed. Simplified Arabic font is reported as readable to students aged 10-
12, especially in sizes 14 and 18.
