Słownik został opracowany w celu przedstawienia sylwetek architektów, inżynierów i budowniczych, którzy współtworzyli architektoniczną tkankę Katowic w okresie międzywojennym. W pracy zamieszczono biogramy fachowców działających zarówno lokalnie czy na terenie kraju, jak i cieszących się międzynarodową sławą. Słownik zawiera artykuły dotyczące m.in. Jadwigi Dobrzyńskiej, Zygmunta Łobody, Stefana Bryły, Władysława Schwarzenberga-Czernego. Publikacja wydobywa z niezasłużonego zapomnienia nieznane fakty z ich życiorysów, pozwala na prześledzenie karier przed i po II wojnie światowej. Oprócz podstawowych danych biograficznych w każdym z haseł zamieszczono spis projektów i realizacji, ustalonych na podstawie kwerend archiwalnych, często zupełnie nieznanych w literaturze naukowej. Wielu z bohaterów słownika na nowo „otrzymało” swoje twarze dzięki publikacji mało znanych fotografii. Zamieszczony przed hasłami wstęp przybliża ogólne cechy środowiska architektonicznego Katowic w okresie międzywojennym, a dołączone na końcu życiorysy pozwalają nie tylko na zapoznanie się z ciekawymi losami bohaterów słownika, ale również ich indywidualnym stylem pisania. Publikacja jest adresowana do wszystkich, którzy interesują się szeroko pojętymi dziejami architektury modernistycznej w Polsce oraz badaczy zainteresowanych historią Śląska, w szczególności Górnego Śląska i Katowic.

Komitet Wojewódzki PZPR w Katowicach i podległe mu lokalne struktury PZPR występowały w roli planistów i organizatorów imprez o charakterze publicznym, których celem były przede wszystkim legitymizacja władzy i uzyskanie poparcia dla polityki partii ze strony jak największych rzesz obywateli (także bezpartyjnych), upowszechnianie ideologii marksistowsko-leninowskiej i propagowanie tzw. kultury socjalistycznej. Szczególnie widowiskową oprawę i masowy charakter uzyskały imprezy organizowane w Polsce i w województwie katowickim w latach siedemdziesiątych – w komunistycznej belle époque. W artykule zaprezentowano założenia organizacyjne i ideologiczne oraz przebieg najważniejszych uroczystości masowych organizowanych w tym czasie na obszarze omawianego województwa. Szczególne znaczenie dla PZPR miały wielkie, cykliczne święta systemowe o charakterze ogólnopolskim – jak Święto Pracy 1 maja, Dzień Zwycięstwa 9 maja, Narodowe Święto Odrodzenia Polski obchodzone 22 lipca czy kolejne rocznice „Wielkiej Socjalistycznej Rewolucji Październikowej”. Przygotowywały je, zgodnie z dyspozycjami i wytycznymi z Warszawy, kilkudziesięcioosobowe sztaby – komitety kierowane przez działaczy PZPR szczebla wojewódzkiego. Każdego roku starano się, przy zachowaniu powtarzalnego ogólnego układu, nadać imprezom i hasłom nieco odmienny charakter i zwiększyć przepych uroczystości. Szczególną rangę otrzymywały obchody jubileuszowe – jak np. Dzień Zwycięstwa świętowany w 1975 r., trzydzieści lat po zakończeniu II wojny światowej, czy obchodzona w 1977 r. sześćdziesiąta rocznica bolszewickiej rewolty. Instancja wojewódzka PZPR organizowała też, wedle narzuconych przez KC PZPR założeń ogólnych, imprezy incydentalne związane z jednostkowymi, niepowtarzalnymi wydarzeniami (np. wiece poparcia dla polityki Edwarda Gierka i Partii w czerwcu 1976 r.). KW PZPR występował ponadto w roli scenarzysty i organizatora uroczystości o charakterze regionalnym (np. Święto „Trybuny Robotniczej”, rocznice powstań śląskich). Wszystkie te święta i obchody miały aspekty ideologiczne i propagandowe, gdyż oprócz funkcji rozrywkowych czy artystycznych miały w założeniu organizatorów pełnić przede wszystkim funkcje polityczne. Do udziału w niektórych z nich (jak 1 Maja) obligowano wszystkich członków partii, często wraz z rodzinami, a różnymi metodami perswazyjnymi zachęcano lub wymuszano także udział osób niebędących członkami PZPR. W tym sensie wielotysięczne imprezy masowe były, obok kontrolowanych przez partię komunistycznej mediów, częścią permanentnej indoktrynacji społeczeństwa.

Książka narodziła się z potrzeby opisu zjawiska, które pomału przestaje istnieć. Codziennie przechodzimy obok obiektów, które nie są w stanie zwrócić na siebie uwagi z powodu niewłaściwych przekształceń, zaniedbania, pokrycia wielkoformatowymi reklamami, wreszcie późnomodernistycznej formy, niełatwej do zrozumienia przez przeciętnego odbiorcę. Budynki te jedynie dla znawców maja wartość artystyczną, historyczną i naukową. Powstały dzięki zaangażowaniu i pracy pokolenia żyjącego w bardzo trudnych realiach komunistycznej Polski. Praca ta jest pierwszym tak szerokim ujęciem problematyki architektury i urbanistyki śródmieścia Nowych Katowic – jednego z najciekawszych zespołów architektonicznych i najszerzej zakrojonych projektów modernizacyjnych PRL-owskiej Polski. Jej główną część poświecono prezentacji bogatego materiału – nie tylko ikon architektury takich jak „Spodek” czy „Superjednostka”, ale również tych mniej znanych, a często równie interesujących – „Zenitu”, katowickich Plant, Małpiego Gaju czy Niebieskich Bloków. W publikacji zaprezentowano również ogólne uwarunkowania powstawania urbanistyki i architektury w powojennej Polsce, sylwetki twórców i charakterystyki biur projektowych. Unikatowe archiwalne fotografie pozwalają wczuć się w klimat tamtych lat, pokazując świat, który pomału odchodzi w zapomnienie.

The main aim of the article is to indicate the key dilemmas of event management by the city administration during the pandemic on the example of Katowice. To achieve this goal, the methods of analyzing the literature on the subject, active observation and questionnaire survey methods were used. The research described in the paper indicates a wide spectrum of conditions influencing the development of the event market, in particular the key problems of event management during a heavy fall in demand. The research sample consists of the most important entities on the event market in Katowice. The author is aware of the limitations associated with this research and inference resulting from a small research sample and the dynamics of changes in the behavior of participants and organizers of different events. The described and analyzed conditions of the development of the event market, including in particular the management dilemmas during covid-19 time, can be used by local governments to effectively support meeting industry. The article has been based on empirical research, and also has referred to the theoretical concept of the development of the event market in the time of and after the deepest economic crisis in XXI century.

Trwający od 12 grudnia 1981 r. do 22 lipca 1983 r. stan wojenny miał szczególny przebieg w województwie katowickim. " Solidarność " śląsko-dąbrowska była najliczniejszym regionem związkowym w całym kraju. Silnie uprzemysłowiony obszar Śląska, liczne zakłady pracy, które zatrudniały nawet do kilkunastu tysięcy pracowników, były kluczowe dla władzy.

The issue of diverse identities imprinted on the urban landscape as the result of political changes and the struggle for power between different social and ethnic groups is analysed here using the example of Katowice, the capital and largest urban centre in Upper Silesia, Poland. Basing their conclusions on systematic investigation of the most important changes and features in the cityscape in five clearly distinct historical periods, the authors explore the conditions and mechanisms of the creation of the city’s symbolic landscape and its links with urban identity. They argue that Katowice represents a peculiar model of urban identity formation in Central and Eastern Europe that has to date not been researched in any depth, in which each successive historical period represents a rupture with the foregoing values and ideas and an attempt to make a new, lasting imprint on the material outlook of the city. The development of such a model of identity is the result of the complex interplay between the city’s changing geopolitical context and its economic and functional development path.

The article invites the readers to approach the city itself as a text of culture. We are to read it alongside other narratives/narrations (literary, artistic, and cinematic) devoted to it. The author traces how Katowice’s space has been transmuted into politically- and culturally-charged places, by distinguishing consecutive layers of the palimpsest (Polish village, building patterns of German and Polish times: the old and the new). The foregoing examples allow the author to indicate the traces of conceptions and ideologies reflected by architecture. He also includes some methodological recommendations/tips pertaining to reading the space.

Artykuł zachęca czytelników do potraktowania samego miasta jako tekstu kultury. Mamy go czytać obok innych narracji / narracji (literackich, artystycznych, filmowych) mu poświęconych. Autorka śledzi, jak przestrzeń Katowic przekształciła się w miejsca naładowane politycznie i kulturowo, wyodrębniając kolejne warstwy palimpsestu (wieś polska, schematy zabudowy czasów niemieckich i polskich: stare i nowe). Powyższe przykłady pozwalają autorowi wskazać ślady koncepcji i ideologii odzwierciedlonych w architekturze. Zawiera również zalecenia / wskazówki metodologiczne dotyczące czytania przestrzeni.

The Katowice conurbation is an example of a typical old industrial region in Central and Eastern Europe, whose socioeconomic transformation, initiated after 1990, has led to spatial and functional changes. The aim of this article is to present the suburbanisation process in the Katowice conurbation based on demographic changes and an analysis of migration flow. This process has been taking place in the area since the 2000s and takes on the shape of a multi-centre development of newly created individual and developed housing zones (both in the core and in the suburban area of the conurbation). Since 1990, the cities of the Katowice conurbation have been undergoing a process of shrinking. This process is manifested in the decline in number of urban residents in the years 1991–2016, amounting to 366 thousand people. Moreover, the cities face numerous social, economic and spatial problems. Since 1995, simultaneous with the shrinking of the cities of the Katowice conurbation, there has been an increase in the number of inhabitants in its suburban areas (since 2004, the trend has continued to be positive). Population increases have also been recorded in some inner-city zones of the conurbation. The suburbanisation process in the outer zone of the conurbation includes, in particular, the communes located north and south of the cities constituting its core, including the communes of Ożarowice, Psary, Mierzęcice in the north and Mikołów, Orzesze, Wyry in the southwest. On the other hand, the areas of intense inner-city construction development, located in the areas of the Katowice conurbation core, which are attractive in terms of environment and transportation, are undergoing so-called, "internal suburbanisation".

Artykuł dotyczy tematyzacji rewitalizowanej przestrzeni. Zjawisko to jest coraz bardziej widoczne w Polsce, kraju w którym rewitalizacja przestrzeni na szerszą skalę zaczęła być prowadzona dopiero na początku XXI wieku. Zagadnienie zostało zaprezentowane na kilku przykładach - Stoczni w Gdańsku, Nowej Hucie i Kazimierzu w Krakowie oraz osiedlu Nikiszowiec w Katowicach.

An key part of the transformation and regeneration of the centre of Katowice is the emergence of an academic quarter. The Municipality of Katowice and University of Silesia conducted a workshop on the concepts of integrating an urban student centre. The proposed solutions were targeted at creating a student centre integrated with other public sites of Katowice, improving the attractiveness of the Rawa riverside, and providing a competitive advantage for the city of Katowice over other university cities in Poland.

The article presents the project of the Non-Consolidated Offices in Katowice, made by Andrzej Frydecki in 1947, which is a widely unknown concept and absent from research on post-war architecture in Poland and Upper Silesia. The proposed interpretation of this project takes into account the local historical and urban context as well as earlier and later works of Frydecki himself. The project discussed in this article is the architect’s conscious reference to the history of a specific place – the pre-war administrative and representative district of Katowice – and an attempt to visually restore a lost symbol of the city: the Silesian Museum. At the same time, this unrealized concept allows us to see other examples of the architect’s design activity in a new light, and raises questions about the ideas and principles that guided the architect’s creative process: attention to the historical and urban context, the use of a repertoire of proven motifs or treatments, and the return to pre-war aesthetics after World War II.

In this study we focus on the evolution of the identity of those urban neighbourhoods which have formerly been separate towns. This problem is discussed using the example of the polycentric conurbation of Katowice in southern Poland, which came into being because of its mining and industrial functions. The administrative integration of this multi-level polycentric urban system is the primary background for the development of those neighbourhoods that used to be separate towns. Assuming that changes in legal and administrative status may have certain consequences regarding the social connections and identity of such neighbourhoods, this study aimed to identify such places within the analysed region. The authors also attempted to construct paths of local identity for such spatial entities, confronting them with the thesis that economic factors make them relatively homogeneous. The implementation of new development factors and the paradoxical diversity of the identities of the former towns in this mining-industrial region are also significant elements of the region's social transformation in terms of economic and spatial development.

Housing development in Poland is very much dependent upon financial issues. The size of built dwellings is defined by developers in response to restrictions of consecutive government schemes ("Rodzina na swoim" - "A Family's Own Place" or "MDM" - "Homes for the Young") as well as statistical creditworthiness of Poles. The average quality of space of newly built housing estates does not meet modern requirements of sustainable city development. Could social, grassroots models of housing construction (i.e. small housing co-operatives, co-housing) possibly be an efficient alternative for real estate developers? In this paper the author is looking for an answer to the question of whether social housing may become an important part of affordable housing and presents good examples of grassroots creation and shaping of residential space.

The aim of this article is to look at the strategic management of a large city from the two different perspectives: theoretical and empirical. In the first part, the author focused on theoretical fundaments of management, particularly of public strategic management. The second part presented the characteristics of the process of strategic management based on empirical data: two strategic documents adopted in Katowice over the last number of years were analyzed. One of these documents is a currently binding one and the other is of an archival character. Referring to both the systematics and the means of preparation of these documents, as well as to their content, the author showed their common elements and the transformation which have occurred over the last number of years concerning the manner and approach to strategic management in the city. Based on document analysis, the author answered the question asked in the introduction, which is whether in relation to the long-term policy of Katowice can one talk about change or continuation.

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview on trajectories of urban shrinkage in the Katowice conurbation (after 1990), which is an example of a traditional old industrial region in Central and Eastern Europe. The process of urban shrinkage and its effects, due to the restructuring of the economy of the region since 1989, has been presented in a broader depiction, using the example of the Katowice conurbation and in a narrower depiction, based on two cities: Sosnowiec and Bytom. Bytom and Sosnowiec are models that explains majority of typical path of shrinkage in the Katowice Conurbation. Cities represent urban centers of historical both Upper Silesia (Bytom) and The Dabrowa Basin Region (Sosnowiec). The shrinking cities of the Katowice Conurbation present the most spectacular example of socio-economic problems existing in the post-industrial area of the urban region. One of the signs of urban shrinkage in the Katowice conurbation is the loss of population in the period 1991–2013 in the number of 370 thousand people. In addition, the cities are facing numerous social, economic and spatial issues. It is well known that the Katowice Conurbation as post-industrial region has gone through specific and complicated – economic as well as social transformation. This fact is a key point of view on shrinkage process in described region.

S t r e s z c z e n i e W artykule przedstawiono doświadczenia z autorskiego bloku warsztatowego „Rewitalizacja urbanistyczna terenów pogórniczych”, prowadzonego w ramach programu Edukacja specjalistów z zakresu zarządzania terenami pogórniczymi na pograniczu polsko-czeskim. Program realizowany był przez Politechnikę Śląską i Uniwersytet Techniczny w Ostrawie w latach 2013-2015 i współfinansowany ze środków Europejskiego Funduszu Rozwoju Regionalnego. Celem warsztatów było przekazanie podstawowej wiedzy związanej z przestrzennymi aspektami rewitalizacji terenów pogórniczych osobom reprezentującym różne dziedziny, nie mającym przygotowania architektonicznego i urbanistycznego tak, by ułatwić przyszłą współpracę z urbanistami i architektami, w ramach interdyscyplinarnych wyzwań związanych z rewitalizacją terenów pogórniczych. The article is an attempt to present the nodal problems of Katowice Voivodship, the most industrialized and urbanized region of the country in the first half of the 1970s. At the beginning the author describes general characteristics of this area and the socio-economic situation before entering the discussed period, in order to show the advantages and disadvantages of everyday life of the Katowice voivodship inhabitants. In brief, it presents the dominating influence of the mining and heavy industry on the lives of citizens, primarily through environmental pollution and, consequently, health problems. Some aspects of housing economy were presented, including the issue of the so-called workers’ hotels and difficulties faced by the residents of new prefabricated buildings. The issue of public transport was also discussed, particularly the urban transport, especially important due to the need to meet the rising transport needs of urbanized areas citizens. The last part of the article is dedicated to the issues of trade and service, with a focus on the problem with market supply. The source database for this article are the archives from the Voivodship’s party committee in Katowice, currently stored in the National Archive in Katowice. Apart from numerous reports, descriptions and analysis made for party authorities we can also find letters characteristics there, as well as copies of correspondence coming to the administrative authorities, party instances and the “Trybuna Robotnicza” daily newspaper. These materials are extremely interesting and rarely used source for research on the topic of social reality and everyday life in the times of the so-called Gierek Period.

Biopolitical character of gentrification
For the past few years, gentrification has increasingly begun to appear in Polish academic discussions. Gentrification which is constantly replaced by liberal politicians with the word „revitalization”, is social-political practice. This very peculiar practice is based on displacement the local population with increasing rents, cleaning tenements from tenants and changing the urban space for the middle class. Gentrification processes are often hidden with „revitalization plans” – plans which contain „cleaning” practices. Those liberal mechanisms are biopolitical which means that politicians present „cleaning” practices differently. They used to say that all those plans for revitalisation are for all citizens. Nevertheless, nobody asks who particular is going to be include. Why
scholars have to think about all those practices in biopolitics terms? The answer is easy – liberals used to quote diagrams, results of surveys which justify thorough changes in the housing substance. Additionally, neoliberal politicians use word „pathology” to describe citizens who are living in social or communal flats. This contemptuous term is intended to scare the urban „bourgeoisie” and construct a class’ antagonism. Finally, term „pathology” is intended to present evictions as a series of practices that protect society. The biopolitical character of gentrification is not applying discipline and training, but the apparatus of power which evaluates, hierarchizes, compares and creates the impression of „logical” rule of society. In my research I am not only focus on theory of Michel Foucault but I am also concentrate on „creative class” which exacerbating process of gentrification. In my paper I would like to present how art influences gentrification processes in post-communist cities. In all those hypothesis, I am also interested in the possibility of creating forms of resistance to the biopolitical power ofliberals.
