Esperanto is neither an official nor a commonly spoken language anywhere in the world and, due to the limited number of people who speak this language from birth and who teach it to the next generation, the persistence of this speech community cannot rely on intergenerational language transmission. Based on a year of ethnographic fieldwork in France, mainly in Paris, this article explores continuities and discontinuities in the Esperanto community and movement by looking at how present-day young Esperanto speakers use the language online and through networks of sociability. In asking what is transmitted from one generation of Esperanto speakers to the next, and how new communication technologies impact the ways in which people use the language, I analyse how the concentration of speakers from different age groups around distinct technologies creates a segmentation in this community that leaves some issues incommunicable and hard to transmit. I argue that, on the one hand, engaging with Esperanto through Esperanto associations and, on the other hand, through social media and non-institutionalised gatherings, shapes different perceptions of the language, marking a shift from Esperanto as a forward-looking cause for activists to Esperanto as a tool for sociability and an intellectual game for language-lovers.

It is possible to classify Artificial Languages as well as Natural Languages into three main types, according to the forms of comparative adjectives. Artificial Languages can form the comparatives using only a synthetic strategy, or only an analytic strategy, or both of them accordingly. Artificial Languages that use only a syntetic strategy can be classified further according to the rules in choosing one strategy or the other. Some evidence shows that a large proportion of Artificial Languages have both analytic and synthetic comparatives, as in some natural languages. The formation of comparatives results to be an interesting area of morphology, where there is room for choice, also for Artificial Languages.

(The architecture of desire in the works of Lajos Tárkony). Lajos Tárkony (1902-1978), Esperanto poet, essayist and translator, member of the Budapest literature school, left just one poem book: Soifo (Thirst, 1964). In this essay I analyse the hiden, latent homosexual desire which can be found in the mentioned work.

RESUMO: La ekzisto de la denaskaj parolantoj de Esperanto pruvas, ke strukture tiu lingvo ne signife diferencas de la naturaj lingvoj. La denaskaj parolantoj tamen ne iniciatis ŝanĝojn en la lingvo, nek havas centran rolon en la lingvokomunumo. Pro la manko de vera denaska lingvokomunumo Esperanto ne estas kreola lingvo. Tamen, en la strukturo de la lingvo okazas spontaneaj ŝanĝiĝoj, kiuj similas al tiuj okazantaj en naturaj lingvoj, kaj kiujn iniciatis anonimaj, verŝajne nedenaskaj parolantoj. Por kompreni la rolojn de la denaskaj parolantoj kaj la lingvokomunumo de Esperanto, interesan paralelaĵon proponas pluraj malplimultaj lingvoj revivigataj, precipe tiuj, kiuj socilingvistike karakterizeblas kiel engrupaj duaj lingvoj.

ABSTRACT:  The fact that Esperanto has native speakers proves that its structure is not significantly different from that of natural languges. However, native speakers of Esperanto have not initiated changes in the language, nor do they have a central role in the speech community. As Esperanto does not possess a real community of native speakers, it is not a creole. Rather there have been spontaneous changes in the structure of the language that are similar to those taking place in natural languages, and which were initiated by anonymous, probably non-native speakers. For the proper understanding of the roles of native speakers and the speech community of Esperanto, an interesting parallel is presented by the minority languages being revitalized, especially those which can be sociolinguistically characterized as in-group second languages.

RIASSUNTO: L’esistenza di parlanti nativi dell’esperanto prova che dal punto di vista strutturale la lingua non è diversa in modo significativo dalle lingue naturali. I parlanti nativi tuttavia non sono stati promotori di cambiamenti nella lingua e non hanno un ruolo centrale nella comunità linguistica. A causa dell’assenza di una vera comunità linguistica di nativi l’esperanto non è un creolo. Nella struttura della lingua avvengono comunque cambiamenti spontanei simili a quelli che avvengono nelle lingue naturali, promossi da parlanti anonimi, probabilmente non nativi. Per capire i ruoli dei parlanti nativi e della comunità linguistica dell’esperanto, un interessante parallelismo è offerto da molte lingue minoritarie richiamate in vita, soprattutto quelle che si caratterizzano sociolinguisticamente come seconda lingua di un gruppo.

Krom scienceca analizo de ĉefaj nocioj kaj sociaj problemoj ligitaj kun kultura diverseco, ĝi enhavas riĉan gvidilon pri literaturo kaj interretaj paĝoj ligitaj kun ideoj de interkulturo, tolero, civitaneco kaj edukado en plurkulturaj kaj pluretnaj medioj. La internacia lingvo Esperanto estas prezentita tie ĉi kiel praktika ilo de interhoma komunikado, firme ligita kun bazoj de edukado en kondiĉoj de kultura diverseco. La libro certe interesos ne nur sciencistojn kaj instruistojn, sed ĉiujn legantojn konsciajn pri la gravega rolo de interkulturaj rilatoj en la nuntempa mondo.

Words for berries in natural languages are of several types: semantically transparent compounds, e.g. English blueberry, somewhat semantically opaque compounds, e.g. English cranberry and raspberry, where it is not clear what the semantic contribution of the first component is (if there is any), and non-compounds, e.g. French fraise 'strawberry'. In addition, the set of fruits which are labelled as berries can differ in different languages. Given this variation, it would be interesting to look at such words in artificial (or constructed) languages, i.e. languages which have been consciously created. The most successful artificial language is Esperanto, but there have been more than a thousand others. This paper will look at terms for berries in various types of artificial languages: a posteriori artificial languages (e.g. Esperanto), which use one or more natural languages as sources, a priori languages (e.g. Ro), which do not do this, and mixed languages (e.g. Volapük), which occupy a middle ground between the first two types. A posteriori languages can be further classified according to which languages they are based on. Questions to be investigated include whether terms for berries are compounds, and if so, whether they are fully transparent, which sources these terms are taken from (in the case of a posteriori languages drawing on more than one languages), the ways in which they are similar in form (in the case of some a priori languages), and which fruits are treated as berries. From this work one might uncover general trends in the development of the vocabularies of artificial languages.

Among the hundreds of artificial languages put forth as possible
international auxiliary languages, relatively few (e.g. Esperanto, Interlingua) have seen a substantial amount of actual use. Given this, one might think that the study of such languages might have little to offer pragmaticists, and indeed there has been very little pragmatic work on them. However, I would argue that the pragmatic investigation of artificial languages can provide useful insights and information.
Most designers of artificial languages are not professional linguists.
Although they usually say little or nothing about the pragmatics of their languages, what they do say can reveal popular ideas about pragmatics, which may otherwise be difficult to discover. I shall present and discuss relevant remarks by some artificial language designers. I shall also look at several pragmatic features of artificial languages. Although the amount of textual material available in most artificial languages is limited, what exists can be subjected to pragmatic analysis. Perhaps most intriguing are the a priori artificial languages (e.g. aUI), attempts to
build a language without borrowing anything from natural languages, as, on the surface, these languages can appear quite odd. I shall present some texts from several artificial languages with a view to seeing whether even apparently exotic artificial languages have the same pragmatic properties as natural languages. Such work can be seen as contributing to the study of cross-linguistic pragmatics

Georgo Deŝkin (1891-1967) is one of the less known writers of the soviet school of the Esperanto literature. In this paper I try to analyze his three poem books, his writing techniques and influences, and the way his dramatic changing life marked his poetry.

Respondi tiun ŝajne simplan demandon tamen postulis fundan kritikan analizon de la teksto kaj kontrolon, ĉu ĝia pretendo ĉion pruvi per „nuda logiko” estas fundamentita. Post tia ekzerco reaperas la demando, ĉu vere la verko fluis el la plumo de Zamenhof, la unua, ideala patro de Esperanto, aŭ de Beaufront, la dua kaj malbona patro.

Quite apart from urgencies arising within the theatre as an enterprise, it is independently necessary to bring the tools of speech act theory to bear on the theatre. This paper begins by redescribing the foundational moves of that theory in terms of drawing successive core-supplement boundaries – Austin’s first move demarcates a propositional core from a spoken-performative supplement; his second move, generalizing performativity over all speaking, demarcates a spoken (illocutionary) core from an active (perlocutionary) supplement. A third move, proposed here, extends this strategy of expanding the core in a performative direction. So extended, the central theoretical concern of speech act theory converges with what one major tradition articulates, both practically and conceptually, as the way forward for theatrical performance. That tradition – which has travelled from Stanislavski’s Russia, via Grotowski’s Poland, to Badal Sircar’s India – is in the business of giving democracy theatrical teeth. While Sircar does not explicitly claim a classical Indian ancestry for his work, serious Indology will find it easy to place him in that context.

The Esperanto movement in Indonesia has grown in the past five years from being almost non-existent to having a national association with several clubs. One might therefore assume that the Esperanto movement in Indonesia is a totally recent phenomenon. However, already at the beginning of the twentieth century there were Esperantists in the territory of today’s Indonesia. Between the two World Wars the movement was active: periodicals and books were published, courses held, and clubs and associations established. As a result of the Second World War this vigorous movement collapsed, but following independence the movement reflourished under the guidance of the Minangkabau journalist and feminist Rangkajo Chailan Sjamsoe Datoe Toemenggoeng. In November 1962 Datoe Toemenggoeng unfortunately passed away, and soon afterward the Esperanto movement again collapsed. Research reveals that this repeated disappearance of the movement was not due to her death alone but mostly due to political factors.

This chapter examines possibilities for pragmemes and practs in artificial languages, and whether and how artificial languages differ in these respects from
natural languages. In some controlled languages (a type of artificial language), it is only possible to discuss a small set of topics, meaning that the set of possible
pragmemes is small. Some other artificial languages are designed for use by a particular group of people, in some cases by only one person. Such differences seem
to make some artificial languages quite unlike natural languages; that is, although artificial languages, no matter how strange they may seem on the surface, seem to
resemble natural languages in some areas (e.g. syntax), with respect to pragmemics they appear very different. However, if artificial languages are used to report on
pragmemes (e.g. in fiction), they may (and may have to) allow for a wider range of pragmemes and practs.

Estus atendeble, ke la semantika kampo de la seksorganoj havas la samajn trajtojn kiel aliaj semantikaj kampoj, sed la socia premo kondiĉigas ĝian formiĝon. Tiel, en ĝi grave rolas metaforoj, en kiuj la koncerna termino estas anstataŭita de alia, sena je la negativaj konotacioj de la tabua vorto. En ĉi tiu laboraĵo mi analizas la kreadon de verkaj metaforoj en la kampo de seksorganoj en du verkoj de la esperanta literaturo.

Seria esperável que o campo semántico dos órgaos sexuais tivesse as mesmas caraterísticas que outros campos semánticos, porém a pressom social condiciona a sua formaçom. Destarte, nel jogam um importante papel as metáforas em que o termo em questom é substituído por outro desprovisto das conotações negativas da palavra tabu. Neste trabalho analiso a criaçom de metáforas no campo dos órgaos sexuais em duas obras da literatura em esperanto.

It might be expected that the semantic field of sexual organs would have the same features as any other semantic field; nevertheless, its formation can be conditioned by social pressure. Thus, metaphors in which the term concerned is replaced by another one without the negative connotations of the tabooed word plays an important role. In this paper I analyse the creation of metaphors in the field of sexual organs in two works of the Esperanto literature.

At the turn of the twentieth century, debates surrounding the possibility of an auxiliary language were a main topic of international discussion, including the support of various Nobel Prize winners. Esperanto became an essential part of internationalism. In the absence of other types of transnational associations, Esperantists provided direct contact to different groups. Railway workers, doctors, vegetarians, Freemasons, Catholics, scientists, scouts, lawyers and pacifists of different nations took advantage of the Esperanto congresses to meet and debate. Their dimension as pioneers is highlighted by the fact that in some cases they created associations in absence of any other means of international contact between them. Moreover, encouraged by the possibilities offered by the neutral language, audacious individuals decided to embark on adventurous trips on foot, on horseback or by bicycle.

Esperanto’s expansion finished because of the war, a traumatic experience for all ideals of brotherhood and solidarity. Mostly pacifists, Esperantists had to adapt to the new context. They performed humanitarian acts in collaboration with the Red Cross, and they carried out information services via Esperanto publications. But what would have happened if there had been no war? Would diplomatic relations have been fraternized? Would a network of friendly cities have spread? Could a more humane economic system have been achieved?

La unua publikigis Bakŝiŝ (1938) kun fono de Egiptujo, kiam ĝi estis brita protektorato, kaj la dua, Vagado sub palmoj (1956) kaj Vivo kaj opinioj de Majstro M'Saud (1963), kies rakontoj okazas en la tiama Alĝerio sub franca regado. La finlaboraĵo traspuras la karakterizojn proprajn al la kolonia literaturo en la menciitaj verkoj, kaj sub la prismo de la postkoloniaj studoj klopodas enkuntekstigi rolulojn kaj pejzaĝojn markitajn per la signo de alieco.


Abstract

L. N. Newell (1902-1968) and Jean Ribillard (1904-1962)  was authors of prose works, which has place in Northern Africa during the colonial period. The first one published Bakŝiŝ (1938) happening in Egypt when it was a British protectorate, and the second one, Vagado sub palmoj (1956) and Vivo kaj opinioj de Majstro M'Saud (1963), containing novels about Algeria under the French rule. This final work explores the common features to the colonial literature in the mentioned works, and under the regard of the postcolonial studies tryes to contextualize characters and landscapes marked by the sign of otherness.

Resumo

L. N. Newell (1902-1968) e Jean Ribillard (1904-1962) fôrom autores de obras em prosa que se desenvolvem no Norte de África durante a época colonial. O primeiro publicou Bakŝiŝ (1938), ambientada no Egito quando este era um protetorado británico, e o segundo, Vagado sub palmoj (1956) e Vivo kaj opinioj de Majstro M'Saud (1963), cujas novelas tenhem lugar na Argélia sob o domínio francês. O trabalho pesquisa as caraterísticas própias da literatura colonial nas obras mencionadas, e sob o prisma dos estudos pós-coloniais tenta contextualizar personages marcadas polo signo da alteridade.

Nowruz is very important in countries such as Azerbaijan and Iran, but not well known in the most countries in Europe and the Americas. One would therefore not expect it to receive much attention in media and works in artificial auxiliary languages such as Esperanto (i.e. languages which have been created to facilitate international communication), since most such languages have been created by inhabitants of these countries. On the other hand, since designers and users of such languages generally have an international outlook, it would not be too surprising if mentions or descriptions of Nowruz did sometimes occur in them. In this paper I will discuss appearances of Nowruz (or lack of them) in such languages. One might first note the apparent total absence of references to Nowruz in major auxiliary languages other than Esperanto, e.g. in Volapük, Ido, and Interlingua. This can be explained by the fact that the heyday of these languages was before the current era of globalization, and knowledge of some less familiar countries and cultures was limited. In contrast, Nowruz occasionally appears in non-fiction in Esperanto, and in at least one work of fiction in that language, Ne eblas aplaŭdi unumane ('One cannot Applaud with One Hand') by Sten Johansson. The bulk of this paper will be a discussion of such occurrences.

Socia signifo de Esperanto varias laŭepoke, precipe draste en la fino de la 20a jarcento, kio necesigas ke oni ekzakte komprenu Esperanton sociolingvistike, por akiri laŭcelan ĝustan vojon de la movado. Tiam Esperanta movado elektis difini sin kiel movado por lingva homrajto, per kio oni sukcesis doni al la movado universalan etikan valoron. Sed la redifino konsekvence postulas kritikajn ŝanĝojn al la movado mem. La unua el ili estas komprenomaniero de la movadosituo. La demando, kion Esperanta movado celas nun aŭ devas celi, estas klare montrebla per tri kategorioj : Esperanta movado, movado por lingva rajto kaj movado por informogarantio.

Kio estas la "Fundamento"? Pri ĝi oni multe aŭdas, sed la ordinara esperantisto ne multon scias. La gramatikoj sur kiuj la novuloj lernas la lingvon apenaŭ raportas pri la esenco de tiu verko, eventuale dirante nur, ke ĝi estas la bazo, de kiu oni ne deviu. La kutima komparo estas, ke la etnaj lingvoj trovas en sia jarcenta, por kelkaj plurjarcenta, tradicio la rokon al kiu fiksiĝi: en la etnaj lingvoj la frazoj "oni diras tiel" kaj "diri tion estas eraro" apogiĝas al la uzado de establita popolo. Esperanto en siaj unuaj jardekoj ne havis longan fiksan tradicion al kiu apogiĝi. La lingvo naskiĝis en 1887 per la Unua Libro, sed tiu apero estis ankoraŭ duboplena: pluraj provoj estis faritaj antaŭe, kaj en la menso de la aŭtoro estis restintaj, ankoraŭ ne tute forpuŝitaj, kelkaj alternativoj, pretaj por prezentado al la publiko, se iuj detaloj de la lingvo estus pruviĝintaj absolute netaŭgaj. O presente trabalho tem por intenção identificar e discutir os elementos nacionalistas e universalistas presentes no discurso e na prática do Esperanto. Para iss o, tomamos como ponto de partida uma descrição do Esperanto, em seus principais aspectos: enquanto idioma internacional, filosofia e cultura. A partir daí, mostrarmos que, em muitos casos, seu caráter internacional toma por base argumentos similares aos de movimentos nacionalistas, além de mesclar ideais humanistas com outros típicos do atual relativismo cultural. É a partir desses discursos, aparentemente conflitantes, que o Esperanto busca se afirmar como língua internacional auxiliar, seguindo a concepção de que seus falantes são cidadãos do mundo.

Although hundreds of artificial languages designed for international use have been created in the last few centuries (the best known of which is Esperanto), Korea has largely remained outside of this sphere of activity: most such languages were created in Europe or North America, and few of them make use of words from Korean. This is in spite of the fact that there is a reasonably active Esperanto movement in Korea. In this paper I shall examine the situation of artificial auxiliary languages in Korea and focus on the only major Korean artificial language, Unish, which was designed by some members of Sejong University, Seoul. Some properties of Unish will be examined in order to determine whether they can be attributed to the Korean linguistic context. I shall also look at the extent to which Korean vocabulary and grammar have been used in the construction of artificial auxiliary languages created in other countries.

La verkistinoj en la esperanta beletro elstaras en kunteksto formita de viraj voĉoj. Lige kun tio, kelkaj verkistinoj publikigis unu, maksimume du verkojn, kaj poste forlasis la produktadon en Esperanto, plurfoje ankaŭ la Esperanto-movadon. (Post card from the genre trench: What happened to our women writers?). Women writers in Esperanto literature stand out in a context formed by masculine voices. In connection with that, some women published one, or at most two works, and then quit the literature production in Esperanto, sometimes even the Esperanto movement too. I study the cases of Despina Patrinu (Greece, 1930—1993), Enkela Xhamaj (Albania, 1977—) kaj Sara Larbar (Brazil, 1956 —).

En la nuna artikolo la aŭtoro analizas precipe la rilaton inter Japanio kaj la latina lingvo. En la unua ĉapitro li parolas pri la historiaj rilatoj inter la japana kaj la latina kaj montras, ke ĉi lasta, same kiel la portugala, ludis gravan rolon por koniĝo de la japana inter eŭropaj kleruloj. En la dua ĉapitro li prezentas la latinlingvan korespondadon, kiun li havis kun japana profesoro inter julio kaj decembro de 1988, dum kiu ili pritraktis multe da temoj, i.a. ankaŭ Esperanton. En la tria kaj lasta ĉapitro li skize mencios la agadon de aliaj nuntempaj japanaj latinistoj.

Homoj ofte neglektas la gravecon de la rutino, konsiderante ĉiutagaĵojn enuaj. Siavice, ĉi tiu lingvo – samkiel pluraj aliaj planlingvoj – provizis al homoj neatenditajn pensmanierojn, praktikojn kaj formojn de sinesprimo. Kompreni tiajn pensmanierojn kaj praktikojn - kaj videbligi tiajn klopodojn kompreni ilin - estas en la kerno de la ekzistado de la revuo Esperantologio / Esperanto Studies (EES).
Ekde 1949, EES celas kunvenigi bibliografi an korpuson pri temoj rilataj al Esperanto kaj al Interlingvistiko. Ĝi aperigas artikolojn bazitajn sur originalaj studoj pri lingvosciencaj, historiaj, literatursciencaj, psikologiaj,sociologiaj kaj politikaj aspektoj de Esperanto. En ĝi ankaŭ aperas librorecenzoj, esploraj notoj kaj referaĵoj el la Esperantologiaj Konferencoj jare organizataj de la Centro de Esploro kaj Dokumentado pri Mondaj Lingvaj Problemoj (CED). Fondita de Paul Neergaard kaj poste redaktita de Christer Kiselman, EES troviĝas ekde 2019 sub la aŭspicio de CED. Tiu lastatempa ŝanĝo pri
edaktado ankaŭ entenas ambiciajn projektojn pri ĝisdatigo kaj plibonigo de la revuo.

La bengallingva libro _Merur prarthona: bishuber uttor_ (‘La polusoj preghas: la ekvatoro respondas’) de Probal Dasgupta, eldonita de Abhijan en Kolkata en 2015, havas krom la enkonduko – esperantigita chi-sube –  sep chapitrojn: ‘la prozo kaj Bankimchandra’, ‘legfacila kaj konciza prezento de la Esperanta beletro’, ‘La metalingva insulo kaj la laboriloj de Kamalkumar’, ‘Gödel kaj la prozo’, ‘La kondicha verba fleksio en la kunmetitaj verboj’, ‘La adreso de Utopio’ kaj ‘Kion kontribuis Sisirkumar Das al la pensado pri la prozo’.
