Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) is a multivariate method to elucidate the relationships between biological assemblages of species and their environment. The method is designed to extract synthetic environmental gradients from ecological data-sets. The gradients are the basis for succinctly describing and visualizing the differential habitat preferences (niches) of taxavia an ordination diagram. Linear multivariate methods for relating two set of variables, such as two-block Partial Least Squares (PLS2), canonical correlation analysis and redundancy analysis, are less suited for this purpose because habitat preferences are often unimodal functions of habitat variables. After pointing out the key assumptions underlying CCA, the paper focuses on the interpretation of CCA ordination diagrams. Subsequently, some advanced uses, such as ranking environmental variables in importance and the statistical testing of effects are illustrated on a typical macroinvertebrate data-set. The paper closes with comparisons with correspondence analysis, discriminant analysis, PLS2 and co-inertia analysis. In an appendix a new method, named CCA-PLS, is proposed that combines the strong features of CCA and PLS2.

In this review I will describe the importance of seed banks and thepopulation dynamics of seeds on the distribution of species in salinehabitats. The main questions being examined in this review include: 1.Does the seed bank represent the flora of the entire salinity gradient or isit restricted to the species in each zonal community? 2. Is the size andspecies composition of the persistent seed bank regulated by the degree ofsalt stress in habitats along an environmental gradient? 3. Does thepopulation dynamics of seeds influence the temporal and spatial distributionof plant species in saline habitats? Seed banks may be transient orpersistent depending upon the physiological responses of species and thesoil environment in which the seeds are found. The formation of zonalcommunities in salt marsh environments is affected by changes in soilsalinity and flooding along an elevational gradient. Population dynamics ofseeds have been found to determine the spatial and temporal distributionof species along salinity gradients. The flora and relative density of speciesof zonal communities are significantly dependent upon the stress toleranceof species at different stages of development and the presence of transientor persistent seed banks. The occurrence of a seed bank is related to thesalinity tolerance of species at the germination stage of development, aseeds ability to tolerate hypersaline conditions and flooding, and whetheror not species are able to maintain a persistent seed bank until hypersalineconditions are alleviated.

Relationships between habitat structure and spatial variations in vegetation composition were determined in catenas of central Argentina salt marsh landscapes. Vegetation was classified following a multi-technique strategy. An analysis of species distributions along an environmental gradient was made and a redundancy analysis was used to relate the environmental variables to vegetation data. The spatial covariation was evaluated through fractal analysis. The vegetation can be divided into four discrete noda that correspond to different topographic positions (summit, backslope, footslope and toeslope, respectively): nodum of Stipa trichotoma + St. tenuissima, nodum of Distichlis scoparia, nodum of Distichlis spicata and nodum of Spartina densiflora. Each of these nodum is characterized by a definite combination of floristic groups. Symmetric aggregation of vegetation borders was observed in all three sites. The existence of vegetation discontinuities along the catenas depended largely on water table depth and salinity which in turn controlled the edaphic salinity. The arrangement of sites by multivariate analysis reflected the influence of a complex gradient representing halomorphic and hydromorphic factors. β-diversity was associated with abrupt changes in the physical structure of the catena for a reduced spatial dimension (300-m scale). Absolute diversity and evenness were higher on the summit and declined progressively toward the toeslope. The rate of change was higher on the backslope and the dominant species have different ecological amplitudes overlapping along the gradient. The main operational factors associated with the floristic differences are: (i) the variations in the chemical composition and the seasonal dynamics of the soil solution in the aerated layer of soils, (ii) the salinity and dynamics of groundwater, and (iii) the length of time that the soil is flooded during the rainy season (summer). The fractal dimension was close to 2, implying weak spatial dependence. Fractal dimension varied as a function of scale. The fractogram only revealed a significant spatial dependence on the summit. This spatial dependence was associated with short distances of gradient showing that the organizational pattern of Distichlis spp.- Spartina was related to combinations of underlying environmental factors rather than to a specific position in the catena. The catenas are highly structured spatially, floristic compositions are inextricably linked to this structure. Habitat complexity may directly affect associated vegetation by regulating the hydrohalomorphic conditions in the aerated layer of the soils. The relationships of the habitat-floristic groups are not simple, hydromorphism interacts in a complex way with halomorphism.

Although the comparison of relevant scales of variation is a prerequisite for understanding processes structuring benthic communities, deep-sea studies have traditionally examined spatial patterns of distribution of assemblages along a single scale or environmental gradient. Vast grasslands are found in the walnut-fruit forest region of southern Kyrgyzstan, Middle Asia. Located above the worldwide unique walnut-fruit forests and used for grazing, they play a pivotal role in the mixed mountain agriculture of local farmers. Accordingly, these pastures are subject to an increasing utilization pressure reflecting the changing political and social conditions in the transformation process from a Soviet republic to an independent state. A first detailed analysis of mountain pasture vegetation in the Ferghana Range answers the following questions: What are the main plant community types among Kyrgyzstan’s mountain pastures? What are the main environmental gradients that shape their species composition? Which phytogeographical distribution types are predominant? How does grazing affect community composition and species richness in these grasslands? Species composition was classified by cluster analysis; underlying environmental gradients were explored using DCA. A dataset of 395 relevés was used for classification, and a subset of 79 relevés was used in a DCA to analyze the correlation between vegetation, environment, and grazing impact. The investigated pastures were classified into four distinctive plant communities. The site factors altitude, heat load, inclination and grazing impact were found to be the major determinants of the vegetation pattern. A significant overlap between floristic composition and structural and spatial properties was shown. The majority of the species pool consisted of Middle Asian endemics and Eurosiberian species. However, disturbance-tolerant species played a significant role with respect to species composition and coverage of the herbaceous layer in vast areas of southern Kyrgyzstan’s mountain pastures. In general, an intense grazing impact is clearly reflected by both species composition and structural variables of plant communities. The highly diverse and unique ecosystem is modified by an increasing utilization pressure. In order to maintain vital processes and functioning of this valuable ecosystem — in both economical and ecological terms -, it is indispensable to adopt appropriate pasture management strategies.
