This study of Greek time before Aristotle’s philosophy starts with a commentary on his first text, the Protrepticus. We shall see two distinct forms of time emerge: one initiatory, circular and Platonic in inspiration, the other its diametrical opposite, advanced by Aristotle. We shall explore this dichotomy through a return to poetic conceptions. The Tragedians will give us an initial outline of the notion of time in the Greek world (Fate); we shall then turn to Homer in order to better grasp the complex relations between time and the religious sphere (the Hero); the work of the great theologian Hesiod will confirm this initiatory vision, later set out in remarkable fashion by Nietzsche (Myths); we shall then dive deep into Pythagoreanism to complete our account (Mysteries). Having understood this current of thought, powerfully influenced by the Iranian theogony, we shall be able to discern its clear differences from the so-called “Ionian” current, and thus to move away from Plato (Ideology). Lastly, we shall return to the early Ionian thinkers Thales and Anaximander to analyse whether this really was the vision of the world that Aristotle adopted in developing the first model of time (Science). In the second volume we shall see the return of the thought of the theologoi within the Aristotelian corpus itself, and will question our distinction between the being and existence of time.

Régis Laurent is a philosopher and member of the association Kairos Kai logos (Centre for the study of ancient philosophy). This book is the first part of his doctoral thesis in philosophy, undertaken under the aegis of three French universities (Grenoble, Clermont-Ferrand and Rennes). In addition to his philosophical training, the author is also qualified to Masters level in linguistics and in general psychology, and studied theology at the Thomist University in Paris (ULSH) and at the CEJ of the EHESS.

During the publication process of the cult vases from the Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore at Eleusis, an important question occurs, concerning a) the production sites of these vases, and b) the other find places within Attica.
During the last years, a number of pottery kiln sites containing such vases have been excavated in center Athens and were preliminarily published. Most of them are located in the wider area of the Kerameikos. As the vases from Eleusis were excavated during the end of the 19th and the early decades of the 20th century, these “new” finds are precious, because they provide typological parallels and dated contexts. This presentation aims to encourage excavators of such contexts to collaborate in the future, in order to proceed to a detailed typological catalogue of these vases found in kiln contexts.
But Eleusinian vases are also found in contexts of use, either for cult, either for deposition. Find places have been reported from votive deposits, in roadside shrines of main roads (Sacred Way, Acharnanean Way). But the most interesting geographical area appears to be the Laureion / Thorikos district: either in cultic contexts, or within domestic contexts, these Eleusinian vases appear systematically around Thorikos, the place where –according to the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, the goddess firstly arrived in Attica. The mythological argument seems to be strongly supported by the archaeological diffusion of the cult material.
Beyond the importance of this observation for cultic interpretation, pottery studies may also contribute, as there are typological sub-categories, differentiating the vases from center Athens, Eleusis and southern Attica (Laureion and Thorikos area). It seems that different production centers covered the cultic needs of these areas; no specimens of the southern attic vase varieties have yet been identified in Eleusis. Need for clay analysis and comparison of the different qualities of these vases will be stressed.

Η μεταβιομηχανική ελληνική πόλη αποτελεί ένα εκτεταμένο και εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρον πεδίο επιστημονικής έρευνας. Η βιομηχανία στην Ελευσίνα έπαιξε σημαντικό ρόλο στο χαρακτήρα της πόλης, εξίσου σημαντικό με την αρχαία της ιστορία. Η διεθνής εμπειρία έδωσε πολλά παραδείγματα επιτυχούς αποκατάστασης και επαναχρησιμοποίησης βιομηχανικών χώρων. Το εργοστάσιο του Κρόνου, με την καίρια θέση του στο παραλιακό μέτωπο και τα υπέροχα κτίρια, αποτελεί μια κρίσιμη ευκαιρία για την πόλη της Ελευσίνας. Τα κτίρια του είναι εξαιρετικά παραδείγματα βιομηχανικής αρχιτεκτονικής που κυριαρχούν στον ορίζοντα της Ελευσίνας. Τέσσερις δεκαετίες μετά το κλείσιμο του, το εργοστάσιο παραμένει εγκαταλελειμμένο. Το ΥΠΕΧΩΔΕ (τώρα Υπουργείο Έρευνας και Τεχνολογίας) χαρακτήρισε ως διατηρητέα δύο κτίρια του συγκροτήματος Κρόνος: το κτίριο διοίκησης/σπίτι/χημείο και το αποστακτήριο. Έκτοτε, υπήρξε εκτεταμένη αδράνεια που απειλεί τα κτίρια του εργοστασίου λόγω μη χρήσης, αφαίρεσης δομικών υλικών, βανδαλισμού και παντελούς έλλειψης συντήρησης. Τα τελευταία χρόνια, υπάρχει μια μεγάλη προσπάθεια για το χαρακτηρισμό του συνόλου ή, τουλάχιστον, τμήμα αυτού ως μνημείο από το Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού και Αθλητισμού. Η ομάδα μας με μια σειρά δράσεων και δραστηριοτήτων προσπαθεί να συμβάλλει στη διάσωση, προβολή και επανάχρηση του συγκροτήματος «Κρόνος»: • Διεξήγαμε εκτεταμένη έρευνα για να επικυρώσουμε τη σημασία του εργοστασιακού συγκροτήματος και να υποστηρίξουμε όσους ζητούν τη διατήρησή του. • Παρουσιάσαμε την περίπτωση του Κρόνου σε σχετικά διεθνή συνέδρια, διοργανώσαμε δημόσιες παρουσιάσεις κάνοντας μια ανοιχτή έκκληση για τη διάσωσή του, και παρείχαμε πληροφορίες σχετικά με το θέμα σε μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης. • Υποβάλαμε επισήμως, με τον αριθ. Πρωτ. 4964/31-07-2017 έγγραφό μας, τους φακέλους της έρευνας και των φωτογραφιών μας στο Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού και Αθλητισμού για διευκόλυνση των υπηρεσιών του. Προτείνουμε πιθανές λύσεις επανάχρησης του βιομηχανικού συγκροτήματος του Κρόνου, στο πλαίσιο ενός μεγαλύτερου σχεδίου ανάπλασης του αστικού τοπίου, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη και τις ανάγκες της τοπικής κοινωνίας. Ελπίζουμε ότι ο Δήμος Ελευσίνας και η συνδιοργάνωση της Πολιτιστικής Πρωτεύουσας της Ευρώπης για το 2021 θα αποτελέσουν μια ευκαιρία επιβίωσής του Κρόνου.
