Sir Thomas More's Utopia, published in 1516, is a classic work of how to organize a society based on common property. With a unique mix of common property, institutions and sound economic insights, we argue that More built a framework for a society that could be viable in the long run. While the conditions that make Utopia work are quite restrictive, it does provide a sketch of a society where common property may not stifle long‐term development, but is associated with productive workers and people content with their lives.

Resumen: el artículo presenta resultados de investigación sobre el intercambio de productos en el caravaneo andino fronterizo desde sectores altos hasta los valles precordilleranos a mediados del siglo XX, analizando el caso del valle de Codpa, extremo norte de Chile. A través de un estudio de caso etnográfico multisituado y extendido se propone una lectura relacional y contextual del fenómeno histórico de los “marchantes” y su práctica de “dejar hijos”, que fueron contingentes indígenas provenientes de la frontera boliviana con Chile. Se abordan fuentes orales complementadas con fuentes documentales, para advertir las experiencias de los actores locales y su universo de significados. Como resultado, se evidencia que los marchantes fueron “mediadores culturales” en la (re)producción de una alteridad fronteriza del área, promoviendo componentes socioculturales que se inscribieron en el parentesco local.

Alterities, Exchange, Marchantes (Merchants) in the Codpa Valley, Northern Chile, in the mid-20th Century

Abstract: This article presents the results of an investigation of the exchange of products between the border caravans from the Andean highlands and the sub-cordillera valleys which took place in the Codpa valley in northern Chile in the middle of the 20th century. Making use of a multi-situated and extended ethnographic case study, it offers a relational and contextual interpretation of the historical phenomenon of the marchantes and their practice of “leaving children” from indigenous communities on the Bolivian border with Chile. We analyze oral sources, complemented by documentary ones, to detail the experiences of local actors and their universe of meanings. As a result, we argue that the marchantes were “cultural mediators” in the (re) production of the alterity of the frontier, using sociocultural practices that were inscribed in
local kinship customs.

Alteridades, intercâmbio e marchantes em Codpa, extremo norte do Chile, meados do século XX

Resumo: este artigo apresenta resultados de pesquisa sobre o intercâmbio de produtos na caravana andina fronteiriça desde setores altos até os vales pré-cordilheiranos a meados do século XX, analisando o caso do vale de Codpa, extremo norte do Chile. Por meio de um estudo de caso etnográfico multissituado e estendido, propõe-se uma leitura relacional e contextual do fenômeno histórico dos marchantes e sua prática de “deixar filhos”, que foram contingentes indígenas provenientes da fronteira boliviana com o Chile. Abordam-se fontes orais complementadas com fontes documentais, para advertir as experiências dos atores locais e seu universo de significados. Como
resultado, evidencia-se que os marchantes foram “mediadores culturais” na (re)produção de uma alteridade fronteiriça da área, promovendo componentes socioculturais que são inscritos no parentesco local.
