Use of Ayurveda medicine in military populations and their family remains unclear in our country where Ayurveda practised more and originated. Therefore a study was proposed to find out the prevalence and pattern of Ayurveda medicine use in military personals in Sikkim. Total 607,000 civilian people are in Sikkim and nearly 70,000(seventy thousand) military personals including their family members (Army, ITPB, SSB, BRO and IRB) were in Sikkim. Current study was conducted in Ayurveda Regional Research Institute in Sikkim in between April 2008 to March 2011. The acceptance and popularity of Ayurveda treatment among military personals was gradually increased from 12% (2008-09) to 20% of total OPD attendance in consecutive three years. The diseases that preferred for Ayurveda treatment among the military patients were Musculo-skeletal diseases, Acid Peptic Disorder, Erectile disorders, ano-rectal diseases,  Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Skin diseases and mental diseases. The Study reveals that 26.83% of OPD attended military patients were prefer Ayurveda in all diseases compared to 83.27% military personals prefer Ayurveda in selected disorder. 82.96% of military personals and their family members were very satisfied with the treatment especially in muscular-skeletal disorder where surgery was the treatment of choice in modern medicine. The policy maker should understand the need of Ayurveda in military personals and establish Ayurveda clinic in all military hospital. A population based study for the use of Ayurveda among Indian military personals is recommended to know the actual demand of Ayurveda.

Ficus caricais  the  most  popular  member  of  the  genus Ficus,  and  the  family  Moraceae.  In  the Mediterranean region it is so widely used, both fresh and dried, that it is called “the poor man’s food.” The  dried  fruits  of F. carica have  been  reported  as  an  important source  of  vitamins,  minerals, carbohydrates,  sugars,  organic  acids,  and  phenolic  compounds.  The  plant  has  been  used  in  traditional medicine  for  a  wide  range  of  ailments  related  to  digestive,  endocrine,  reproductive,  and  respiratory systems,  and  also  cancer.  Additionally,  it  is  also  used  in  gastrointestinal  tract  and  urinary  tract infection.Phytochemical studies on the leaves and fruits of the plant have shown that they are rich in phenolics,  organic  acids,  and  volatile  compounds.  However,  there  is  little information  on  the phytochemicals present in the stem and root. Reports on the biological activities of the plant are mainly on its crude extracts which have been proven to possess many biological activities. Some of the most interesting  therapeutic  effectsinclude  anticancer,  hepatoprotective,  hypoglycemic,  hypolipidemic,  and antimicrobial  activities.  Thus,  studies  related  to  identification  of  the  bioactive  compounds  and correlating them to their biological activities are very useful for further research toexplore the potential of F. carica as a source of therapeutic agents.

In modern Era, physicians come across so many patients suffering from the disease Yuvanpidika. The incidence of Yuvanpidika is increasing day by day due to the fast lifestyle. In Sushrut samhita, Yuvanpidika is mentioned under Kshudra rogas. As per Modern science the symptoms of Yuvanpidika resembles Acne vulgaris. Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous units. Generally acne lesions appear at the places where sebaceous glands are naturally large and numerous as on Faces, Cheek, Neck, Back, Chest. All the dermatologists have considered Acne as the disease of sebaceous gland and it has cosmetological importance. This case is an example of Yuvanpidika like skin disease which can be managed with Ayurvedic therapy. A 25 year old female patient was suffering from acne on face, black spot, itching on facial skin along with pain since last 3 months consulted OPD, Dept. of Basic Principles, IPGT & RA. Considering the clinical features and involved Kapha, Vata, Rakta in pathology, patient was treated with oral administration of Patoladi ghanavati from Chakradatta, Visarpa-Visphota Chikitsa along with dietary changes and lifestyle modification. The drug was given with a dose of 1 gm. bid., with the anupana of luke warm water, after food for 60 days. Assessment of the efficacy of the drug was done on the basis of relief in the scores given to sign and symptoms of Yuvanpidika. A remarkable changes were found in various symptoms after assessment. This can be an effective management for the disease Yuvanpidika.

Ayurveda, “The Science of Living”, it has been in existence since the beginning of time and has been giving the health solutions
for various named and unnamed diseases, to the humankind since ages. Cancer is indirectly described in Ayurveda texts in
the form of various terms like ‘arbud’, ‘gulma’, ‘granthi’ which have been coined that could be related to cancer. Though an
uncommon malignancy Gallbladder cancer is the commonest and fatal biliary malignancy as it is not easily diagnosed in early
stages. The integrated approach for early diagnosis and prevention through Ayurveda could be helpful in the management of
the biliary malignancy.

articles published using the keywords ‘carcinoma of gallbladder’, ‘gallbladder cancer’, ‘gallbladder neoplasm’, ‘cholecystectomy’,
‘arbud’, ‘gulma’.
Conclusion: Gall Bladder Cancer can be diagnosed and managed by using diagnostic method recommended in Modern
Medicine as well as by using basic principles and medicines described in Ayurveda. Gall Bladder Cancer can be prevented by
reducing the risks factor of this disease through follow the wholesome diet and normal lifestyle described in Ayurveda.

Metals like iron, copper are being used by humans since the prehistoric period. Tamra (copper) is used in the form of vessels, medicine in day to day life since centuries. During
the medieval period, with the advent of Rasashastra, Tamra Bhasma (calcined ash) occupied a
significant role in the Ayurvedic therapeutics. Ocimum  sanctum  is  an  annual  herb  belonging  to  the  mint  family  with  150
varieties  worldwide.  Ocimum  sanctum  emits  a  spicy  scent  when  bruised.  It  is
believed  to  purify  expectorants,  and  called  the  “wonder  herb”.  Tulsi  is  pungent
and bitter in taste, pungent in the post digestive effect and has hot potency. The
roots, leaves and seeds of Tulsi possess several medicinal properties. Ayurvedic
texts categorise Tulsi as stimulant, aromatic and antipyretic.  It has a variety of
biological / pharmacological activities such as antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal,
anti protozoal, anti malarial, anthelmentic, anti diarrhoeal, analgesic, antipyretic,
anti  inflammatory,  anti  allergic,  antihypertensive,  cardio  protective,  central
nervous  system  (CNS)  depressant,  memory  enhancer,  antihypercholesterolaemic, hepatoprotective, anti diabetic, anti asthmatic, anti thyroidic,
antioxidant,  anticancer,  chemopreventive,  radio protective,  immunomodulatory,
anti fertility, antiulcer, anti arthritic, adaptogenic / anti stress, anti cataract, anti
leucodermal  and  anticoagulant  activities.  Its  leaves  are  helpful  in  sharpening
memory and in curing fever and common cold. Ocimum contains fixed oil which
is  confirmed  by  chemical  tests  for  glycerine.  The  plant  increased  the  physical
endurance and prevented stress-induced ulcers.

Asian Medicines: Encounters, Translations and Transformations
Asian medicines are engaged in complex global networks of actors: conservators who watch the changing supplies of wild plants in Asian mountains, medical botanists who study the substitution practices of collectors and marketers in Asia, policy makers who control or prevent the entry of drugs into European countries, corporations who seek to exploit drugs based on Asian medical knowledge, professional associations who seek to regulate Asian medical practice.  ICTAMs VII and VIII both took place in Asia (2009 in Bhutan, 2013 in Korea). The European location of ICTAM IX will allow us to take stock of the current state of Asian medicine and to examine the global flows of medical knowledge, practice and materials from a different but equally significant vantage point.
Traditional Asian medicines play a significant role in improving the wellbeing of people worldwide, both as a health care system in their own right, and as a resource for bio-discovery projects. Their applications will only grow, and to reach a full understanding of traditional Asian medicine, it is crucial to integrate professionals from many disciplines, including medical anthropologists, traditional medicine practitioners, clinical trial specialists, ethnobotanists, ethnopharmacologists, ethnopharmacognosists, ethnochemists, herbalists, businessmen, historians, economists, political scientists, conservationists, botanists, translators and more. ICTAM IX will bring together these professionals to share their experience, findings and knowledge, and work out appropriate strategies and networking to enhance research on traditional medicines.

The essential issues associated with hair loss are hair fading, dandruff, and falling of hair. Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss or baldness. It is an embarrassing condition for any person as he/she looks extra aged than ordinary. Many forms of medication are available to treat alopecia in special procedure of medication such as Allopathic, Homeopathic, and Ayurveda or can also be surgical like hair transplantation; however, none of them is wholly ample. This hindrance could be solved by the use of natural medicines obtained from herbs. Various herbs are being used to preclude the hair loss and remorse of hairs including Aloe vera, brahmi, nagarmotha, amla, bhringraj, and lots of different herbs. Being average medicines, there are various advantages of making use of them like patient compliance, less side results, convenient availability, inexpensive and multiple mode of applications to treat alopecia, and other hair diseases.

Ayurveda - the traditional medicine system of ancient India, which nourishes an individual’s physical strength and intelligence along with maintaining a wonderful balance with the environment. Deviant to its nature, it has now become an inactive magnificence. Neither the research methodology nor the text book has changed over the past 50 years and paving way for the modern medicine system to progress. This work gives a convincing solution for Ayurveda to regain its lost glory with the incorporation of Information Technology, Data mining, Statistics and Bioinformatics, thus forming a new venture named Ayurinformatics. To prove this, relevant information’s were collected from various literatures of Ayurveda and data mining algorithms. The findings reached by the implementation of data mining algorithms like k-Means algorithm, Canny Edge detection algorithm, Decision support systems, etc., for finding a better research methodology to identify a better treatment method, has made a significant cutback in both time and money than modern medicine system does. This was apparent by the identification of using methods like k-means algorithm to cluster ayurvedic medicines, prediction methods for Bronchial Carcinoma- a type of cancer, Canny Edge Detection Algorithm for Medicinal Plants Disease Identification and AVD with Transitive text mining algorithm for extracting ayurvedic texts from biological databanks. This work strongly enforces that Ayurinformatics gives a new way of life to Ayurveda with its innovative approach to research methodology and better treatment identification methods.

Epidermal nevi are hamartomas that are characterized by hyperplasia of epidermis and adnexal structures. These nevi may be classifi ed into a number of distinct variants, which are based on clinical morphology, extent of involvement, and the predominant epidermal structure in the lesion. Variants include verrucous epidermal nevus, nevus sebaceous, nevus comedonicus, eccrine nevus, apocrine nevus, Becker’s nevus, and white sponge nevus. A 22-year-old girl approached us with complaints of blackish-colored hard growth, increasing in size over the right post-auricular region since 5 years.
Ksharakarma is a procedure that involves the most important surgical, para-surgical, and critical-care procedures like incision, excision, scraping, and hemostatic locally (pratisaraneeya) and generally (paneeya). Pratisaraneeya kshara is prepared with herbo-mineral medicines having an average pH of 13, possessing penetrating, corrosive, scraping, and healing properties, and are evidently indicated for external application in charmakīla. For the present case, kshara karma was preferred for  application as the lesion was bigger in size and the results were appreciable clinically.

"The clinical bacteria of multi-drug resistant to some antibiotics are
considered a common problem in the world wide. Alternative
antibacterial strategies are urgently needed, and thus this situation
has led to a re-evaluation of the therapeutic use of ancient
remedies, such as plants and plant-based products, including
Nigella sativa (N. sativa). This study aimed to evaluate the
antibacterial activity of Yemeni N. sativa oil against some Clinical
Bacterial Isolates (CBI) and Control Strains of Bacteria (CSB) in
comparison with Augmentin® (Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid).
This study was carried out in Sana’a city during the period of one
year from May 2012 to April 2013. The antibacterial activity of oil
with different concentrations was determined by using disc agar
diffusion technique against CBI (Staphylococcus aureus and
Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and CSB (Staphylococcus aureus
ATCC25619, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC29737), also the
Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC) of oil extract was
determined. The results indicated that, the highest significant
antibacterial activity was at the maximum concentration of the oil
against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in
comparison with Augmentin ® discs (p < 0.05) respectively. This
study observed that, there was strong positive correlation between
the diameter zone (DZ-mm) and oil concentrations (%). In
addition, the DZ (mm) of the oil for CSB was higher than CBI.
Also the oil activity was found to be more effective against
Staphylococcus aureus than Pseudomonas aeruginosa. On the
other hand, the MIC of the oil against CBI were ranged between ≥
0.5% and 4%. Whereas, the CSB particularly Staphylococcus
aureus were sensitive to low concentrations of oil. It could be
concluded that, the oil had high antibacterial effect against CSB
and CBI with high concentration and more effective than
Augmentin® discs."

Noticeable rise in the gynaecological disorders in India during the last few decades has drawn interest of all medical sciences to search for an effective alternative in the treatment of female reproductive tract disorders with minimal untoward effects.  Ayurveda aims at preservation and maintenance of health and hence there is a tremendous scope of Ayurveda practitioners in Gynaecology to face the challenge of making Ayurveda as primary and only care for many benign disorders. Women of contemporary era seek guiding principle towards sustaining her wellbeing. The practitioners are performing an excellent task in this regard. It is the responsibility of consultants to adhere to this commitment and principles, explore the knowledge and provide healing to her ailments. Preaching about Paricharyas and its role in preventing many disorders and for attaining a healthy offspring is essential for future generation.

Ayurveda refers to bronchial asthma as Tamaka Swasa and it is well explained in Charaka Samhita. It contributes several
modalities of the treatment for Swasa roga( asthma). Among all modalities of treatment, polyherbal combinations are said to
be well-accepted, safe and effective in asthma. A study was carried out in 40 patients of either sex in between the age of
15-65 years to assure the clinical response of Padmapatradi yoga in bronchial asthma (Tamaka Swasa) at P.G. department
of Kayachikitsa, D.G.M. Ayurvedic Medical College, Gadag, Karnataka. The sum total properties of Padmapatradi yoga
is tikta katu rasa, laghu and tikna guna (light and penetrating properties), ushna virya (hot potency) and vatakaphagna
(decrease vata and kapha dosa) Padmapatradi yoga is effective in increased peak expiratory flow rate, breath holding time,
and reduces the absolute eosinophil count of studied cases and also found statistically highly significant at p<0.001 level.
The drug is quite safe and acts as a bronchodilator, antihistaminic and anti-inflammatory.

Rise in number of infertile couple is a major concern worldwide. The number of couples turning to technologies and artificial methods like IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is increasing. More and more number of male and female are prone to infertility in cities due to life style. The major causative factor in female infertility is determined as PCOD (Poly cystic ovarian disorder) or anovulatory cycle. Here case studies of patients suffering from infertility because of anovulation are presented.

Diabetes is a severe metabolic disorder. From a global perspective, it is becoming a growing problem due to the ever-increasing numbers of patients. The WHO estimates the number of people with diabetes around 347 million people with countries such as China, the United States, and India as the countries with the highest number of patients.1 Ayurveda treats diabetes with a person-specific combination of cleansing cures, dietary advice, herbs, and mental guidance. In this report, we study the efficacy of a person-specific combination of therapy combined with the herbal supplement Mohana Choorna consisting of 20 different herbs in a case study from a patient with impaired glucose tolerance.

Ayurveda represents a dual approach for management of a disease namely samsodhana chikitsa (purificatory therapy) and Samsamana chikitsa (Pacificatory therapy). Even though purification is considered as the most important part of the treatment, the preparatory procedures like snehana and swedana comprises a major part of the procedures done in a theatre. Among them, Swedana procedures include the maximum. Kerala has a rich tradition of practice of Panchakarma and allied procedures and made many unique contributions. The foremost example is Pindasweda in which many varities of procedures have been identified. A review of classical and regional texts shows a large number of formulations of Churnapindasweda which are used as Rukshasweda, Snigdhasweda and Rukshasnigdhasweda. The boluses are directly applied to the body, heated in steam of sour gruel, butter milk, cow's urine or Kashaya etc or the boluses are dipped in boiling sour gruel, butter milk etc. Even in a single disease Swedana with various materials have been explained. Unless these practices are put into research and utilized in clinics with more intent and frequency, this unique tradition will fade away from spectrum of knowledge.

Ayurveda is basically a medical science but different branches of science were nurtured by it like biology, genetics, microbiology, clinical medicine, surgery, astronomy, pharmaceutics and metallurgy etc. In this traditional therapeutic system, various categories of formulations have been described in official and traditional literature. Similar to modern system of therapeutics, various units operations were adopted in developing various dosage forms to obtain the desired effect upto the optimum time. Every step has been explained in detail in traditional literature and sight modifications have also been mentioned in some texts. Besides these, numbers of metals, their alloys, metallurgy etc. have also been elaborated for the well being of the society. Hitherto, 'Rasayan' (chemistry) and the associated studies were also familiar in ancient time. Various chemical like common salt, alkali, borax and compounds of elements like Fe, Cu, Hg and Au etc., were commonly used from in that period and the techniques for making alloys of bronze, brass, and bell metal etc. were also very common. The applicability of natural preservatives like oil, salt and sugar were also much known in ancient time. However; the terms used as stated in traditional literature were not similar to modern time. Also, the alcoholic and acidic fermented products were prepared very commonly. The present study has been focused to assess the similarity of chemical terms mentioned in literature with modern science and technology.

Recently, Sh. K. C. Tyagi, a Rajya Sabha MP, speaking in the House, protested against an Ayurvedic medicine, Putrajeevak Beej, on the ground that it promoted gender discrimination. Responding to the charge, Swami Ramdev, who is associated with the Hardwar-based Divya Pharmacy that manufactures the medicine, stated that the medicine was named after ‘the scientific name of the herb Putranjiva roxburghii’.

The argument is fallacious. The species is a tree which was inducted into modern botany by a British naturalist, William Roxburgh, who has placed on record his reasons for the nomenclature. Roxburgh wrote in 1826 that in Madras, the parents bought the seeds of the so-named tree some cases, families have preserved some trady in the bazaar, strung them, and put them ‘round the necks of their children, to preserve them in health’. It is ironical that the mere latinization of a Sanskrit term denoting ornamental use of a tree is being invoked to claim scientific validation for  its supposed medicinal properties.

Vitiligo (leukoderma) is a skin condition in which white patches appear on different parts of the body. It occurs where the Melanocyte cells which are responsible for skin coloration are destroyed. White patches may start appearing sporadically and increase in size as Melanocyte destruction spreads. Patches usually appear on hands and feet. Vitiligo in Ayurvedic literatures is described as Swithra, classifying Kusth. When Bhrajak Pitta is in an imbalanced state, along with other dhathus the skin starts losing its color and white patches appear. The study was designed to analyze the most important causes for Leucoderma in patients attending to BMARI Clinic.All the patients between the ages of 18-60,of both sex were included and Patients with pregnancy comorbidities were excluded. Data was collected by a pre-planned interviewer administered questionnaire, from 50 randomly selected patients attending to Swithra clinic, processed and analyzed using MS Excel 2010.The study revealed the results Middle aged (31 to 50 years) males (56%) are more predominant than other age groups or females.76%of patients attended due to other treatment failures. Also 82% of patients were reported that they were under treatments for other diseases such as diabetic mellitus, Hypertension, Cholesterol and gastritis. Their main causes ushna ahara

Objectives: Ayurveda claims to be effective in the treatment of psychosomatic disorders by means of lifestyle and nutritional counseling. Design: In a randomized controlled study mothers with burnout were randomized into two groups: Ayurvedic nutritional counseling (according to tradition), and conventional nutritional counseling (following the recommendations of a family doctor). Patients received five counseling sessions over twelve weeks. Main outcome measures: Outcomes included levels of burnout, quality of life, sleep, stress, depression/anxiety, and spirituality at three and six months. It also included a qualitative evaluation of the communication processes. Results: We randomized thirty four patients; twenty three participants were included in the per protocol analysis. No significant differences were observed between the groups. However, significant and clinically relevant intra-group mean changes for the primary outcome burnout, and secondary outcomes sleep, stress, depression and mental health were only found in the Ayurveda group. The qualitative part of the study identified different conversational styles and counseling techniques between the two study groups. In conventional consultations questions tended to be category bound, while counseling-advice was predominantly admonitory. The Ayurvedic practitioner used open-ended interrogative forms, devices for displaying understanding, and positive re-evaluation more frequently, leading to an overall less asymmetrical interaction. Conclusions: We found positive effects for both groups, which however were more pronounced in the Ayurvedic group. The conversational and counseling techniques in the Ayurvedic group offered more opportunities for problem description by patients as well as patient-centered practice and resource-oriented recommendations by the physician. Nello stesso testo l'Ayurveda è anche definito come ciò che parla dell'"āyus giovevole e nocivo, felice e infelice, di ciò che giova o nuoce all'āyus, della durata dell'āyus e dell'āyus stesso" (Caraka Samhita, I, 41), determinando operativamente ciò che giova o nuoce alla vita, quali sono gli stati della vita favorevoli o sfavorevoli ad essa e la lunghezza della vita stessa. L'Ayurveda, propone come lo Yoga, una visione unitaria dell'essere umano, che include tutti i comportamenti salutari e non salutari che si possono adottare durante la vita, anche in campo etico. Arthava is a cyclical expression of female reproductive system in their reproductive age.  To a good extent, normal cycles of arthava may be considered as indicative of good reproductive health.  According to ayurvedic biology, the arthava represents a unique event.  It has a concerted team work of the doshas behind it and it represents the potential of a woman to menstruate, ovulate and conceive.  This note is an attempt to elucidate the physiology of arthava as per ayurvedic outlook; and further to evolve a technique to explain different gynaecological diseases.

The effects of integrative medicine practices such as meditation and Ayurveda on human physiology are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to identify altered metabolomic profiles following an Ayurveda-based intervention. In the experimental group, 65 healthy male and female subjects participated in a 6-day Panchakarma-based Ayurvedic intervention which included herbs, vegetarian diet, meditation, yoga, and massage. A set of 12 plasma phosphatidylcholines decreased (adjusted p &lt; 0.01) post-intervention in the experimental (n = 65) compared to control group (n = 54) after Bonferroni correction for multiple testing; within these compounds, the phosphatidylcholine with the greatest decrease in abundance was PC ae C36:4 (delta = -0.34). Application of a 10% FDR revealed an additional 57 metabolites that were differentially abundant between groups. The fibroid is a common benign tumour of the female genital tract. Clinically uterine fibroids are commonly symptomless, but they may occur as a palpable mass, accompanied by bleeding, or pain or with symptoms secondary to compression of the mass. Available treatment protocols in modern are hormonal therapy, hysterectomy, myomectomy and uterine artery embolization having so many complications in future. It was critically reviewed in the context of granthiroga. In this case report patient suffered from submucosal uterine fibroids for 1 year. First, she took allopathic medicine but was not benefited. Then she was treated with shodhan therapy followed by Ayurvedic medication and uttarbasti procedure. Initially, 3 cycles she had given dashmool oil matrabasti, and then Ayurvedic formulations, kanchnar guggulu, punanarnava mandoor, dashmoolarishta, ashokarishta for 3 months which is followed by 3 cycles of uttarbasti with apamargakshar oil. After 9 months of treatment, improvement was noticed in symptoms and on Hb-(BT-8.2 g, AT-10.3 g), Ultrasonography (BT-20 x 20 mm sub mucosal uterine fibroid, AT-normal study). The line of treatment was followed in this case was to treat provoked vata, kapha dosha and vitiated mansa, medas dhatu. There were no adverse effects found during the Ayurvedic medication.

This study aims to assess the efficacy and safety of two Ayurveda drug regimens for the treatment of uterine fibroids (UF) in a randomized single-blind clinical trial. 120 participants with UF (volume ≥ 2 cm3) were randomly allocated at a 1 : 1 : 1 ratio to 2 experimental groups and the control group. The 12-week intervention period was followed by 12-week follow-up. The primary efficacy endpoint was the change of the largest UF volume. The secondary efficacy endpoints were assessed by the pictorial bleeding assessment score (PBAC), UF symptoms, and quality of life score. The safety endpoints were changed in hepatic and renal safety parameters and patients experiencing adverse effects. Significant decrease was observed in the volume of UF in the arm II but not in arm I, while a significant increase was observed in the volume of the largest UF in the control group at 12th week.
