Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems provide key capabilities to the coalition and national command authorities for intelligence collection, exploitation and battle management. ISR systems support the full range of component commanders at all levels of command. Further, both coalition and national command authorities may employ exploited and pre-exploited ISR information in the development of politico-military options for military and civil operations within an area of operations (AO). As a result, ISR information provides a critical piece of information for both military commanders and their civilian counterparts operating in the same AO and will likely be in demand for contingency operations from disaster relief to military conflict. This paper will present the key findings of experimentation employing network enabled databases and ISR management tools for dissemination of ISR data and information. Subjects to be addressed include but are not limited to information security and cross domain data transfer, network resource allocation and tools provided for review and minimization of bandwidth requirements, tasking and management of ISR systems by end users outside of traditional networks, communications capabilities and limitations realized through collaboration functions and web enabled applications as well as ISR command and control in an open network of multiple end users.

This project is based on the development of a chat application that makes use of Bluetooth rather than the internet in order to initiate chat conversation. Low-cost wireless connections and low-power are two of the most attractive features that are provided by Bluetooth and can be used in mobile devices and other accessories as well. This, therefore, provides an open standard for the implementation of a short range wireless communication. Bluetooth, when integrated into Android, which is a mainstream smart phone platform becomes a means of mobile communication. A large number of developers have been attracted to the Android design because it possesses the characteristics of both, open sourcing and powerful application AP I. The purpose of this project is to explore the concept of a chat room designed on the basis of Bluetooth. The aim is to analyse the architecture of the Android platform and introduce the process of implementing the Bluetooth communication in detail. We eventually proceed to design and implement the concept of a chat room based on Bluetooth by making use of API’s of Android platform.

As players craft and enact embodiment in digital games, the relationship between social interaction and gender (male/female) versus gender-role identity (masculinity/femininity) remains unclear. This paper examines differences in chat, avatar movement, and avatar appearance among male players who played male and female avatars. Initial analysis reveals that gender-based playstyles are distinct from gender role-based playstyles. Most importantly, men playing female avatars retain patterns typical of male players; however they depart from patterns typical of high-masculinity players. Specifically, gender-switching males tended to reject masculine behaviors in favor of flirting, using more punctuation, and deferring physical leadership. We interpret this to mean that male gender-switchers do not shed male behaviors and, instead of performing normatively feminine behaviors, work to counteract masculine behaviors – they try to act “not-masculine.” These findings have implications for gam...

Nella presente ricerca vengono esaminati i passaggi dal dialetto istroveneto al croato di sei giovani istriani bilingui di italiano e croato (M=28). Il corpus è costituito da conversazioni via chat tratte dal social network Facebook. L'obiettivo principale dell'indagine è stabilire le motivazioni che portano i parlanti a cambiare codice. Dopo aver individuato il tipo di code-switching più frequente, in base alla distinzione di Poplack (1980), sono state analizzate le motivazioni che lo regolano (Gumperz, 1982 ; Appel/Muysken, 1987 e Malik, 1994). Dall'analisi dei dati è emerso un uso notevole del tag- switching, seguito dall'intrasentential e dall'intersentential code-switching. Per quanto invece riguarda le funzioni, la commutazione di codice si verifica principalmente in funzione referenziale ed espressiva.

Diese Arbeit untersucht die Online-Kommunikation Jugendlicher im sozialen Netzwerk SchülerVZ. Der Fokus liegt auf der Gestaltung ihrer sozialen Beziehungen in der schriftlichen Kommunikation. Zudem wird ein mehrdimensionales Modell zur Beschreibung von Online-Kommunikationskompetenz entwickelt und mit Beispielen konkretisiert.
Der theoretische Teil der Arbeit (Kapitel 1-4) beinhaltet die Darstellung der Adoleszenzphase der untersuchten Fokusgruppe (Schüler im Alter von 12-13 Jahren), um ihren Entwicklungsstand einordnen zu können. Ebenso wird in diesem Kapitel die aktuelle Forschung zur Online-Kommunikation beleuchtet und zusammengefasst, insbesondere empirische Arbeiten stehen hierbei im Vordergrund. Das Kapitel 3 thematisiert dezidiert die sozialen Netzwerke. Neben der Begriffsbestimmung wird die Entwicklung der verschiedenen Netzwerke in Deutschland anhand ihres chronologischen Auftretens beschrieben. Mit der Darstellung des Aufbaus und der Funktionen des SchülerVZs schließt dieses Kapitel. Das folgende Kapitel skizziert das methodische und theoretische Gerüst der Arbeit. Dabei wird auf verschiedene Ansätze der Gesprächsforschung, wie die Ethnografische Gesprächsanalyse und die Interaktionale Stilistik, zurückgegriffen, die auf die Besonderheiten der Online-Kommunikation adaptiert werden. Schwerpunkte sind dabei die Aspekte der Prozesshaftigkeit und der Interaktion. Hierdurch kann interaktionale Online-Kommunikation adäquat beschrieben werden. Zur Analyse des Begriffs der Höflichkeit in der Online-Kommunikation werden die Kategorien von Haferland und Paul verwendet. Ebenso werden Goffmans Überlegungen zum Face-Work-Konzept mit einbezogen. Das fünfte Kapitel thematisiert das Korpus sowie die ethischen und rechtlichen Aspekte der Aufzeichnungen. Kapitel 6 stellt kommunikative Handlungen der Jugendlichen vor, die der Pflege und Aufrechterhaltung der Online-Kommunikation – und letztendlich der Beziehung der Beteiligten – dienen. Es wird dabei beschrieben, wie die Jugendlichen sprachliche und nicht-sprachliche Elemente sowie typische sprachliche Handlungen verwenden, um höflich miteinander umzugehen. Dies können nicht nur Texte, sondern auch multimediale Inhalte, wie Emoticons oder Videos, sein. Weiter wird erläutert, wie Konflikte in der Online-Kommunikation entstehen können und welche Strategien die Jugendlichen anwenden, um diese wieder zu normalisieren. Im mediendidaktischen Teil wird ein mehrdimensionales Modell zur Online-Kommunikationskompetenz entwickelt, das auf der Verbindung zwischen Schreib- und Gesprächskompetenz basiert. Die einzelnen Schnittebenen werden zudem anhand verschiedener Kompetenzniveaus konkretisiert. Die Arbeit vereinigt somit sprachwissenschaftliche Analysen mit mediendidaktischen Überlegungen.

Since the beginning of the Internet, its features have been used to communicate knowledge between researchers in different universities or scientific laboratories, and later, with the increasing growth of the World Wide Web, knowledge became a collective good shared by its users. The current investigation has three main objectives: a) to describe the professional web forum as a discursive subgenre of the web, b) to illustrate the mechanism of knowledge transmission on the professional web forums, and c) to observe the variation across languages of the professional web forum as a subgenre of the knowledge transmission process.
In the analysis of the linguistic material of the professional web forum corpus we used a theoretical framework based on different linguistic trends and theories currently developed in France.
The analysed material consists in a comparable texts corpus, organised, in five sub-corpora, in function of the language the participants in the web forums use to communicate: English, Spanish, French, Romanian, and Catalan.
The analysis of the linguistic material of the professional web forum corpus provides essential information concerning the discursive features of the knowledge transmission process in different languages.

A body of scholarship has begun to chart the influence of “chat” modes of news delivery on discourse quality as part of what is termed the internal fragmentation of news: the shift from monological to dialogical modes of news delivery (Ben-Porath, 2007). This article investigates the democratic costs and benefits of political discourse contained in these “political talk” news formats. It focuses on four New Zealand programmes and is structured in terms of market (commercial) and non-market (public service) performance. Discourse quality is measured quantitatively by content analysis; the results identify some important democratic trade-offs that market and non-market modes of political talk make. This paper adds to international scholarship by contributing empirical data to research investigating the democratic values of public service and commercial news content; it also enables critical engagement with the issue of the internal fragmentation of news formats by providing a more nuanced account of political talk than previous criticisms.

The paper is a description of computer-mediated discourse (CMD) and offers insight into the history of social media, specifically social networking. Their origins are in communication via mobile phones so. "text messaging", which gradually passed into the chat (through web portals – a webchat and instantmessaging programs – ICQ, Skype) to create a compact unit in the form of social network, now known mainly through Facebook. The second line, which we follow in this description, is a view of language development and investigation of this type of discourse, stabilizing terms associated with CMC (computer-mediated communication) and CMD, while the outline of current and future trends in computer-mediated communication.

Diseño de una interfaz para un cliente de mensajes instantáneos en un dispositivo móvil, tomando en cuenta un proceso de diseño con needfinding, postdesign, personas, diseño participativo, sketching, entre otros. Se platicó sobre una conjetura derivada a partir de un modelo basado en los modos de apelación de la retórica. La evaluación del prototipo tomó en cuenta la comunicabilidad de la ingeniería semiótica, usabilidad y una prueba simple a partir del modelo mencionado.

Emergency Remote Education (ERE) has provided an effective response to the education emergency created by the coronavirus outbreak. Teachers, lecturers and students have experimented with new teaching and learning strategies and digital tools, adjusting to the possibilities and the constraints of computer-mediated communication. This study investigates a case study to show how multimodal interaction, communication and engagement can be established during video lessons in English courses delivered in a university environment. Data collected through the participant observation of a 2-hour-online class will be analysed combining classroom discourse and multimodal analysis to investigate synchronous interaction and the different modes of meaning-making emerging during emergency remote teaching and learning. The goal of the present study is twofold: on the one hand, it aims to contribute to the discussion of the short-term and mediumterm impact of wisdom gained during ERE on academic teaching in terms of interaction and multimodality. On the other hand, it sheds light on challenges and best practices revealed during ERE classes, which at the same time could contribute to improve lecturers' interactional competence in terms of ways of interacting and meaning-making in an instructional context.

"We present PolemicTweet a system with an encompassing, economic, and engaging approach to video tagging and analysis. Annotating and tagging videos manually is a boring and time-consuming process. Yet, in the last couple of years the audiences of events--such as academic conferences--have begun to produce unexploited metadata in the form of micropost activities. With PolemicTweet we explore the use of tagged microposts for both video an- notation and browsing aid. PolemicTweet is a system 1) to crowd source conference video tagging with structured sentiment metadata, 2) to engage audiences in a tagging process, and 3) to visualize these annotations for browsing and analyzing a video. We describe the the system and its components as well as the results from a one-year live deployment in 27 different events.

Abstract: This paper describes the visualization of chat log data in the massively multiplayer online game World of Warcraft. Charts were created to get a general sense of chat trends in a specific player group engaged in "high-end raiding, " a 40-person collaborative activity. These charts helped identify patterns in the frequency of chat over time during two specific gaming sessions. The sessions represented significant moments in the raid group's history: the first time a particular monster, Ragnaros, was fought and one of the first times he was defeated. The visualization process, while useful, is only one analysis tool in a fuller ethnographic account of expertise development in World of Warcraft.

RESUMO: Este trabalho, inserido nas problemáticas da sociossemiótica, discute a aprendizagem ou a construção do saber sob a perspectiva do que essa abordagem teórica concebe como regime de ajustamento. A partir de uma problematização dos modos de interação entre sujeitos, mediados ou não por objetos, analisamos situações de interação que têm lugar no espaço virtual produzidas pela mobilização de dois gêneros digitais: o do fórum, considerando a participação de discentes em um curso de graduação presencial, e o chat, em duas diferentes sessões num evento acadêmico online. A análise aponta para a possibilidade de pensar o conhecimento numa perspectiva processual e dinâmica, com a instauração de interações mais simétricas, de fazer partilhado, em que o saber se elabora como efeito de um envolvimento conjunto. Por fim, pretende apontar para usos de ferramentas digitais com implicações para a prática pedagógica. ABSTRACT: This paper, inserted in the problematic of socio-semiotics, discusses learning or knowledge building from the perspective of what this theoretical approach conceives as adjustment scheme. From a problematization on the modes of interaction between subjects, mediated or not by objects, we analyze the interactions that take place in the virtual space produced by mobilizing two digital genres: of the forum, considering the participation of students in an presencial undergraduate course, and the " chat " in two different sessions at an online academic event. The analysis points to the possibility of thinking about knowledge in a procedural and dynamic perspective, with the introduction of more symmetrical interactions, with collaborative contruction, in what knowledge is produced with the effect of joint involvement. Finally, this paper intends to point to uses of digital tools with implications for pedagogical practice.

This research, based on fieldwork conducted in an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) channel, shows some of the modalities of the practices adopted by people who chat online. An analysis of the content of online communication demonstrates how the practice makes it possible to experience the chat room as a “place” in which fundamentally one communicates for the sake of being with others. The exchanges, which frequently seem devoid of content, are used by chatters to occupy the online environment, to give it a more concrete substance, and to pass time with others, like one can do in places like pubs and cafés, where what is said can be less important than the fact of being together. These routines of online communication are interpreted in relation to offline settings and to times of individual daily life in which the practice of forming a virtual place and the sharing of real time becomes understandable as a way of building a community

 Nowadays many meetings and conversations take place through social networks. Badoo.com is one of the best known, with more than 102 million users in 2010. This article concentrates on communication through the chat in Badoo between 150 men and the author. The study analyses the main linguistic characteristics in the conversations (orthography, use of capital letters, emoticons and strategies of courtesy and discourtesy) in order to observe how gender is constructed in interaction. The analysis shows that the conversations have characteristics of oral discourse. Moreover, the author prepared five questions as a survey in order to observe what men expected from Badoo, what their values and hobbies were, if they would like to marry and the characteristics they value in women. The analysis of the survey results shows how the participants in the virtual interactions investigated here, negotiate their gender identities.

Abstract: The Virtual Math Teams Project is an on-going research effort conducted within the Math Forum online suite of educational services related to school mathematics. It is an iterative effort to evolve an online math discourse community and to design effective software support for collaborative learning within this community. A central research aim is to develop a systematic understanding of how math discourse takes place in an online chat environment. This is part of a larger research agenda of analyzing group cognition, the ability of small groups to engage in high-level intellectual processes like argumentation, problem-solving and inquiry.

Internet communication is one of the most important applications of the 21st century. College students are among those who make use of this activity for both academic and personal interest. Students usually vary in their use, appreciation and response to this widely used activity. Accordingly, the present research paper aims at answering the following questions: to what extent college students use the instant-messaging system in initiating and developing personal and social communication? and to what extent the revealed identities are real or fake? If real, how many aspects of identity are real or fake? What is the purpose behind using fake identities? Are there any similarities and differences between gender-based identities? To what extent messages reflect the user's identity and gender? And what are the different ways of identity manifestations? To achieve the above aims, a questionnaire has been conducted on the students of Baghdad University to closely examine the relationship between online interaction and gender identities. The results showed that the highest percentage of students, 94%, agrees that chat is of great help in establishing and maintaining distant and local relationships. While the lowest percentage, 1.1%, goes with the proposition that chat is the most important application of the internet.
