El objetivo de esta investigación es determinar la influencia específica de los núcleos especulativos de la filosofía del Pseudo Dionisio Areopagita en las renovaciones arquitectónicas de la iglesia abacial de Saint Denis en la época del abad Suger, a mediados del siglo doce.
En el capítulo I se estudia el desarrollo de la noción de lo gótico, particularmente en relación con la arquitectura, así como sus más significativas variaciones históricas en la literatura históricoartística, para establecer un marco conceptual para nuestra investigación.
El capítulo II se consagra a reconstruir el contexto histórico de la aparición de los escritos del Pseudo Dionisio Areopagita y a determinar los contenidos filosóficos y teológicos del Corpus Dionisiacum (CD). Se estudian, también, la identificación del Pseudo Dionisio con el discípulo de san Pablo mencionado en el Nuevo Testamento y la hagiografía de san Dionisio, santo patrón de Francia y de la abadía de Suger, especialmente la vida del santo escrita por Hilduino, abad de Saint Denis, en la cual se consolidó la crasis de estos tres dionisios.
En el capítulo III se exponen la vida y el pensamiento del abad Suger de Saint Denis respecto de su proyecto de una nacionalidad francesa a partir de la dinastía de los Capetos, la íntima relación del abad con la dirección del reino y su administración de la abadía de Saint Denis, en la cual se enmarcan las intervenciones en la iglesia abacial.
Por último, en el capítulo IV se examinan las renovaciones arquitectónicas de la Abadía Real de Saint Denis realizadas en la época del abad Suger y se determina la influencia de la filosofía del Pseudo Dionisio Areopagita en las formas arquitectónicas y en la iconografía figurativa de dichas renovaciones.
[The aim of this research is to determine the specific influence of the speculative cores of the philosophy of the Pseudo-Dionysius in the architectural renovation of the Abbey Church of Saint Denis in times of Abbot Suger in the mid-twelfth century.
The first Chapter studies the development of the notion of the Gothic, particularly in relation to architecture as well at its most significant historical changes in art historical literature, to establish a conceptual framework for this research.
The second Chapter is devoted to the reconstruction of the historical context in which the writings of the Pseudo-Dionysius surface, as well as to determine the philosophical and theological content of the Corpus Dionisiacum (CD). It also studies the identification of the Pseudo-Dionysius with
the disciple of Paul mentioned in the New Testament and the hagiography of Saint Denis, patron saint of France and of Suger’s abbey, especially the life of the saint written by Hilduin, Abbot of Saint Denis, in which the fusion of these three Dionysius was consolidated.
The third Chapter presents the life and thought of Abbot Suger of Saint Denis regarding his project of a French nationality with the Capetian dynasty as its foundation, the abbot’s intimate relationship with the direction of the kingdom and his management of the Abbey of Saint Denis, in which the renovations of the abbey church are an integral part.
Finally, the fourth Chapter studies the architectural renovation of the Royal Abbey of Saint Denis made at times of Abbot Suger, and the influence of the philosophy of the Pseudo-Dionysius in the architectural forms and the figurative iconography of these renovations is determined.]

En 1346, Philippe VI de Valois promulgua l’ordonnance de Brunoy. Ce long document visait à réorganiser l’administration forestière du royaume afin de tirer des forêts un meilleur profit et d’en assurer une gestion durable et rationnelle. Pendant longtemps, les historiens y ont vu la première expression d’une politique forestière de la part des souverains français, les véritables fondements de la foresterie française. En réalité, les politiques de Philippe VI sont tributaires de près d’un siècle et demi de règlementations progressivement développées sous les derniers Capétiens directs. C’est à partir du règne de Philippe Auguste, et plus spécifiquement avec la conquête de la Normandie en 1204, que les souverains français s’intéressèrent de plus près aux ressources forestières de leur domaine. Dès le début du XIIIe siècle, les riches forêts
royales de Normandie furent administrées selon un régime toujours plus strict visant à limiter l’accès aux usagers et à garantir un rendement fiscal optimal. La forêt servait alors un rôle complexe. Outre son apport fiscal, elle jouait un rôle essentiel dans l’économie rurale, tout en constituant un espace sur lequel s’exerçait la justice, le pouvoir et la générosité des princes médiévaux. L’étude des sources administratives du long XIIIe siècle, s’étendant du règne de Philippe Auguste à celui de Charles IV, permet de brosser un portrait plus complet de la formation d’une première politique forestière française. Celle-ci s’articule autour de la création d’une administration dirigée par un corps d’officiers spécialisés, les maîtres des Eaux et Forêts, et de l’élaboration d’un corpus de règlementations visant, sous l’auspice d’une politique du « bien commun », à maintenir un équilibre entre conservation, utilisation et exploitation. Loin d’être le lieu de solitude dépeint dans la littérature médiévale, la forêt normande, siège des tractations entre l’ancienne coutume et le droit royal naissant, était plutôt un espace borné, délimité et rationalisé selon cet ensemble de règlementations et de limitations, et constituait un lieu de contact, voire de conflit, entre les usagers et le pouvoir royal.

In 1346, Philip VI of Valois enacted the Ordinance of Brunoy. This lengthy document aimed at reorganizing the kingdom’s forest administration in order to ensure that royal forests remained sufficiently profitables and adequately managed. For most of the past century, historians have believed the Ordinance of Brunoy to be the first true expression of the forest policies of the French crown. In reality, Philip VI benefited from a wealth of regulations already in place which had been developped by his predecessors since the beginning of the XIIIth century. It can be argued that the reign of Philip Augustus, and especially his conquest of Normandy in 1204, truly marks the inception of the first forest policies by the French royal government. From that time on, royal forests in Normandy were managed according to a set of strict regulations aiming at limiting usage rights and guaranteeing a steady contribution to the kingdom’s finances. Forests during the Middle Ages served multiple purposes : beside their input in royal finances, they were vital to rural economy, and formed a space over which medieval princes exercised their justice, authority, power and generosity. The study of administrative sources from XIIIth and XIVth Normandy gives a better understanding of the development of these early policies, which revolved around the creation of a new administration headed by the masters of « Eaux et Forêts » and the formulation, under the auspices of common good, of a set of rules and regulations aiming at maintaining a balance between conservation, exploitation and usages. In truth, the forests of medieval Normandy were far from the archetypal woodlands of medieval litterature : they appear as a well delimited and rationalized space, managed and monitered by the king’s officers, and formed an area of contact and conflict between the royal government and the forests’ users.

Louée par les troubadours mais critiquée par les clercs, délaissée par son époux mais écoutée de toutes les cours royales, Aliénor d’Aquitaine a arpenté l’Occident, et même la Terre sainte, durant trois quarts de siècle.
Cette activité a scellé en partie le destin politique de la France du Moyen Age. En effet, reine d’un espace politique étendu des confins de l’Ecosse aux contreforts des Pyrénées en vertu de son union avec Henri II Plantagenêt, Aliénor a été mêlée de près aux affaires de la France de l’Ouest, qui en a gardé certains souvenirs.
En outre, le mode de vie de cette princesse de pays d’oc devenue reine et duchesse de part et d’autre de la Manche n’a pas été sans liens avec la civilisation courtoise du XIIe siècle, dont la France a été le jardin.
C’est d’une vraie saga que nous parlent les pierres et les paysages encore visibles de la France d’Aliénor, qu’il n’appartient qu’à nous de redécouvrir.

The outlook from Paris in the year 1100 was troubling, from the king's perspective. Outnumbered, hedged in by warring aristocrats, the monarchy's eventual success in unifying a kingdom over the course of the next century was not inevitable or even predictable. The succession of male heirs produced by Capetian queens and kings conferred stability and served as a tool of propaganda, evidence of divine approbation. But royal advantage was also attained through the machinations of a ruler like Philip Augustus, who intervened in aristocratic marriage alliances and land management. The story of the French aristocracy is one of transformation, of a class of people watching as their places on the chessboard of French power were manipulated and renegotiated.

Knights, Lords, and Ladies: In Search of Aristocrats in the Paris Region, 1180-1220 builds on themes for which John W. Baldwin established himself as an eminent historian through a lifetime of publications. He was a master of the sources produced under the government of Philip Augustus, by theologians at the University of Paris, and even of the vernacular fiction enjoyed by courtly audiences. In this volume, Baldwin examines these loci of cultural and political change from the angle of the elites and creates a precise depiction of leading families in the orbit of Paris and its perceptive, calculating king.
