ΤΗΕ ΝΑΟDOMIC ARCHITECTURE OF THE DESPOTATE OF EPIRUS IN THE ERA OF THE DYNASTY OF COMNENOI-ANGELOI (1204-1318)

Ιn the historical frame of the breakdown of the Byzantine Empire after 1204, and the formation of the subsequent centrifugal tensions of the late Byzantine world in the area of the so-called ΄΄Despοtate of Epirus΄΄, in the western Greek regions a separate archi-tectonic and naodomic movement and tradition was born, grow, flourished and finally declined. The political, ecclesiastical, social, economical and cultural particularities and conditions of this independent Greek orthodox state, under the direct or collateral spon-sorship of the dynastic house of Angeloi Komnenoi (1204-1318), lead to the autonomy of its architectural creativity, which incept the special characteristics of an independent architectural School.
Τhe great development of the naodomic activity of the Despotate of Epirus is obser-ved during the domination of the Greek orthodox House of Komnenoi Angeloi (1204 -1318), mainly in the days of Michael II (1231 - 1267) and his son and succesor Nikephorus I (1267 - 1294). The naodomic activity was also continued during in the sove-reign of Thomas Angelus Komnenos (1294 - 1318) and his mother and regent, Αnna Pa-leologina (+ c.1313).
The monuments of the Despotate are extended in a large geographic terrain, from the golf of Corinth to the northern limits of Epirus and from the western extremes of the thessalian plain to the Ionian Islands. The monuments are visible in all the dominion of the Despotate. They present for the most part a unity, regardless of their underlined particularities, due to the different conditions of their founding. In the direct inter-dependence to a number of related monuments in the adjacent Greek and Balkan areas, testify the influence of the naodomic activity of Epirus to the wider western Balkan re-gion.
From a typological point of view, a wide typological repertoire is characteristic, in-cluding a variation of classic Byzantine and ΄΄modern΄΄ in 13th century, naodomic types of the cross-vaulted and the churches with porticoes. Specific characteristics are on one hand, the conservatism with the continuation of traditional types depended on the middle - Byzantine tradition. On the other hand, the presence of ΄΄hybrid΄΄ types is obvious, prove of the inquiry of the craftsman-groups of the Despotate. Some times their efforts are on vanguard, with intense to form buildings with smaller or bigger success, capable to correspond to the wishes of their nobleman employers.
Τhe same tendencies are visible also from a morphological point of view. The general and the specific study of the morphological elements, guide us to the conclusion that in general terms the architects of the Despotate of Epirus, stick together to the Byzantine architectonic glossary. The origins of this repertoire, springs from various traditions of the mature middle - Byzantine period, like the tradition of Southern and Northern Greece, which are mixed in different percentages each time. The mixture of elements from different architectonical traditions, faithful to the spirit of multi-collection which characterize the naodomic production of the state of Epirus, contribute to the formation of a reach spectrum of deliverances, a special virtue of its monuments. In some cases the builders proceed to the creative conjugation of the partial elements, producing thus new types and fοrms, which later propagate widely to its area of influence.
Under the absence of a strong anterior tradition and the open in influences architectonic climate in the field of technique, multiple influences are observed. Technical methods from the older local traditions, Southern and Northern Greece, even from the far away area of Constantinople and Nicaea, coexist and used from different craftmen groups.
The origins of the naodomic School of the Despotate of Epirus, is possible to be found in the earlier middle-Byzantine past of the neighboring areas of the southern and northern Greece of 12th century, given the absence of a powerful proportional tradition. The absence exactly of such a vivid and strong tradition, make possible the powerful in-fluence of the above most integrated traditions, in the formation of the architectural intendity of the Despotate of Epirus, in the wider artistic frames of the 13th century.
The various traditions and influences in relation to the openness to multiple choices, mainly from the political and social elite, of the Despotate of Epirus give a special and sui generis personality to its naodomic activity, with main characteristics the regional character, the ideological rule of architecture, the typological and morphological collectiveness, the anticlassical tendencies and the architectural pictorialism.
These partial characteristics are observed in different degrees and frequencies, pro-portionally with the each time esthetic choices and others factors of the undertaken architectonic work. In relation to the at times historical coincidences this phenomenon aloud the distinction of internal phases of experimentations, developments and wider presence and propagation, even to the greater geographical environment of the Despotate.
The rapid fall of the Greek - orthodox ruling house of Angeloi Doukai Komnenoi, the loss of its political independence and the decline of the internal social and economic structures of the Despotate at the beginning of the 14th century, lead to the sudden fall and disappearance of its important and creative architectural process.

An interesting post-Byzantine icon depicting the Virgin Mary with Christ and Saint John the Baptist as an infant, is exhibited in the monastery of Zoodochos Pigi on Patmos. The characteristic rendering of its background strongly recalls a series of  works attributed to the painter Ioannes Permeniatis which repeat identically certain landscape details. The attribution of the icon to the specific painter is also supported by its close affinity to two similar works associated with him: an icon belonging to a private collection and another kept in the National Gallery of Prague. Permeniatis, whose origin is still unknown, was living in Venice in the year 1523. The possibility that he was a native of Rhodes, where the place-name Parmeni is recorded, is strengthened by the stylistic affinity of his works with some eclectic Rhodian icons.

The exhibition Water in Arts and Crafts in the Berat Region, 4th century B.C. to 19th century A.D. is the outcome of ten years of deliberations and consultations on the state of national museums in Albania. The study presents new evidence on western art sources identified in the major works of  Panaghiotis Doxaras (Peloponnese, Mani 1662-Corfu 1729), offering  insights into aspects of his work that  lead to a new understanding of  the importance of his contribution to art  theory and practice in the Venetian-ruled Ionian islands of the early 18th century.

Il Museo Nazionale di Ravenna possiede tra le sue collezioni un vasto nucleo di oggetti devozionali post-bizantini, tra i quali spicca un trittico ligneo, che già Giuseppe Gerola considerava “il pezzo più notevole della raccolta”. The National Museum of Ravenna has in its collections a vast nucleus of post-Byzantine devotional objects, among which a wooden triptych stands out, which Giuseppe Gerola already considered “the most remarkable piece in the collection”. The article proposes a scientific study of the work and analyses its iconography.

Σε αυτό το άρθρο παρουσιάζονται δύο κτήρια των μέσων του 19ου αιώνα, στην  πόλη του Αγρινίου, ο ΄΄παλαιός΄΄ ναός του Αγίου Χριστοφόρου, Β.Α. της πόλης και η οικία Σωχωρίτη, στο κέντρο της πόλης.
Η εκκλησία του Αγίου Χριστοφόρου, Β.Α.  του Αγρινίου, στην σημερινή της μορφή κτίστηκε μεταξύ των ετών 1846-1849 και είναι το μόνο σωζόμενο χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα των εκκλησιών του Αγρινίου στον 19ο αιώνα. Ανήκει από αρχιτεκτονική άποψη, στο ναοδομικό τύπο της τρίκλιτης Βασιλικής , τυπικής μορφής για τις εκκλησίες των μικρών χωριών και πόλεων στην Ελλάδα κατά τον 19ο αιώνα.
Η οικία Σωχωρίτη, κτισμένο στην δεκαετία του 1840, είναι ένα χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα οικίας-αρχοντικού της ανώτερης τάξης της πόλης,, με ισχυρό οχυρωματικό χαρακτήρα και επιρροές από την υστεροβυζαντινή κοσμική αρχιτεκτονική αλλά και επιδράσεις από τις βαλκανικές καλλιτεχνικές τάσεις του rococo τον 19ο αιώνα, πριν την ανάπτυξη της πόλης στο δεύτερο μισό του αιώνα, με την κυριαρχία του νεοκλασικισμού στην επίσημη έκφρασή του ή τις λαϊκότερες εκδοχές του.

This article puts forward a new later dating of the Greek manuscript BnF, Paris. gr. 1783 kept in the National Library of France and containing portraits of emperors of the Palaiologoi dynasty. The manuscript contains important texts related to the Constantinople period of court history and culture. Historiographers used to date the manuscript to the fifteenth century according to the portrait of Patriarch Joseph II (†1439), a famous participant of the Ferraro-Florence Council, which can be seen in the Italian fresco paintings of the fifteenth century. Meanwhile, the study of the manuscript’s palaeographical features shows that it was written by an anonymous scribe from Crete who worked in Venice and Rome for Italian humanists in the middle — third quarter of the sixteenth century. The handwriting of the famous Cretan calligrapher, employee of Francis I’s library in Fontainebleau Angelus Vergecius, as well as some other scribes associated with him was typologically close to the handwriting of the main scribe of the manuscript. Analogies to this handwriting can also be seen in the handwriting of Manuel Provataris, another famous scribe of the epoch, a Cretan Greek from Rethymno, employee and copyist of the Vatican Library. The new palaeographic dating of the Paris. gr. 1783 manuscript changes the date of creation of portrait drawings of the Byzantine emperors of the Palaiologoi dynasty and Patriarch Joseph II. Also, it is important to change the dating of all texts contained in the manuscript including such important texts as one of the three lists of imperial tombs of the Church of Sts. Apostles in Constantinople, as well the list of the offices of the Byzantine court. The Paris. gr. 1783 manuscript should be excluded from the circle of Late Byzantine booklore and attributed to post-Byzantine book heritage.

Σε αυτή την εισήγηση, δημοσιεύεται το μερικά διατηρημένο επιστύλιο του Τέμπλου της αιτωλικής μονής της Παναγίας Μυρτιάς. Τα ξυλόγλυπτα υπολείμματα του τέμπλου, αποτελούνται από τον σταυρό, τα Λυπηρά και το μισό τμήμα της ζωφόρου των Αποστολικών με την κεντρική σκηνή της Δεήσεως. Ειδικότερα εξετάζονται η εικονογραφία και η τεχνοτροπία των σωζόμενων παραστάσεων του Χριστού στον Σταυρό, η σκηνή της Δεήσεων και τα σωζόμενα έξι πρόσωπα των Αποστόλων.
Σύμφωνα με εικονογραφικά, τεχνοτροπικά και ιστορικά δεδομένα, το εικονογραφημένο επιστύλιο χρονολογείται στον 17ο αιώνα και ειδικά το 1659. Από την άλλη πλευρά η κατασκευή του και η εικονογραφική του διακόσμηση αποδίδονται στους γνωστούς δωρητές της μονής Ηγούμενο Κοσμά, τον διδάσκαλο του Γένους Ευγένιο Γιαννούλη τον Αιτωλό και τον μεταβυζαντινό ζωγράφο Ιωάννη.

Ο ναός του Αγίου Αθανασίου βρίσκεται σε απόσταση τριακοσίων περίπου μέτρων νοτίως του συνοικισμού Μπολιάνα της Κοινότητος Αετόπετρας (Κοσόλιανης) της επαρχίας Δωδώνης του Νομού Ιωαννίνων και αποτελεί την παλαιότερη, ακριβώς χονολογημένη, εκκλησία του χωριού. Ο ναός είναι προσκολλημένος σε συγκρότημα βράχων και ως την περίοδο της Κατοχής βρισκόταν μέσα σε πυκνό δάσος πουρναριών, που θεωρούταν ως ‘’βακούφικο’’. Κατά την παράδοση στον χώρο λειτουργούσε, τουλάχιστον κατά την ύστατη περίοδο της τουρκοκρατία, ’’κρυφό σχολειό’’, στον κατεδαφισμένο σήμερα Νάρθηκα του ναού.
Αρχιτεκτονικά ανήκει στον απλό μονόχωρο δρομικό τύπο με νάρθηκα στην βόρεια πλευρά του. Ο βόρειος νάρθηκας, ήταν κλειστός από την ανατολική, βόρεια και δυτική πλευρά του και επικοινωνούσε με τον κύριο Ναό μέσω της σημερινής βόρειας θύρας. Στο εσωτερικό η ανατολική πλευρά του βράχου, έχει διαμορφωθεί σε δύο κόγχες που μορφοποιούν την αψίδα του Ιερού και την κόγχη της Προθέσεως.
Είναι κτισμένος με ελάχιστα επεξεργασμένους φαιούς εγχωρίους λίθους και άφθονο ασβεστοκονίαμα. Μέχρι τα τελευταία χρόνια ήταν στεγασμένος με σχιστολιθικές πλάκες. Πάνω από την νότια θύρα, εντοιχίστηκε πλάκα φαιού σχιστολίθου, με την χρονολογία ‘’εκ[τίσθη] 1778’’.

Η ιστορικογεωγραφική περιοχή του Άνω Αχελώου, αποτελεί ένα τμήμα του ευρύτερου γεωγραφικού πλαισίου που περιλαμβάνει τον αείροο ποταμό, και από τις δύο όχθες του, τόσο της κύριας κοίτης του όσο και του ευρέως δικτύου των παραποτάμων του. Βασική πηγή για την αποκατάσταση των πραγματικοτήτων της περιοχής κατά την βυζαντινή περίοδο είναι οι γραπτές και άλλες ιστορικές πηγές και τα σωζόμενα σύγχρονα μνημεία.
Όσο αφορά τα πρώτα, οι άμεσες γραπτές ιστορικές πηγές για την περιοχή του Άνω Αχελώου, είναι σχεδόν ελάχιστες. Από την άλλη πλευρά, τα μνημεία είναι οι πιο σημαντικές πηγές, δεδομένου ότι αποτελούν τις πιο σημαντικές πηγές πληροφόρησης. Επίσης, ως σύνολο, είναι ο στόχος μιας ευρύτερης και διεπιστημονικής προσέγγισης, και όχι μόνο από αρχαιολογικής και καλλιτεχνικής πλευράς. Έτσι αποτελούν την παραμένουσα ραχοκοκαλιά για την γνώση αυτής της ιστορικής περιόδου, των ανθρώπων και των κοινωνιών που τα δημιούργησε.
Τα μνημεία του Άνω Αχελώου, εκτός της γεωγραφικής και πολιτιστικής τους ενότητας, είναι δυνατόν να διακριθούν σε δύο υποομάδες, ανατολικά και δυτικά της κύριας κοίτης του ποταμού. Τα κύρια χαρακτηριστικά αυτών των ΄΄συστάδων΄΄ μνημείων, είναι η ποικιλία των σωζόμενων μνημείων(κάστρα, οικισμοί, γέφυρες, παλαιοχριστιανικές βασιλικές, ναοί, μονές,, ασκητικά κέντρα και σπήλαια) και οι σωζόμενοι πολιτιστικοί θησαυροί τους(τοιχογραφίες, γλυπτά, εικόνες, χειρόγραφα, χρυσοκέντητα, έργα μεταλλοτεχνίας κα).
Ιδιαίτερα χαρακτηριστικά τους είναι η μακροχρόνια χρήση και λειτουργία τους, η ομαλή διαδοχή τους και αντοχή στο πέρασμα του χρόνου και παράλληλα η ενότητά τους, η σύνδεση, η συσχέτιση, η αλληλοεπιρροή και η αδιατάρακτη σχεδόν συνέχεια τους, για πάνω από μια χιλιετία.
