did-you-fall-for-a-shooting-star asked:

Do you think it will ever be possible to ‘categorize’ blogs you follow? Right now I use the ‘blogs I subscribe to’ function to separate a bunch of blogs that have similar types content from my dash. Any chance we can do this on a wider scale? Like if I want to have a tab for all the music related blogs I follow? Or all the art blogs I follow?

Answer: Hi there, @did-you-fall-for-a-shooting-star!

We like the way you think. This is basically the idea behind Collections!

It was available as an experiment for a little while and we learned a lot. Right now it’s on the backburner as we work on Communities. But do stay tuned for more info, as we very much intend to return to this someday, and hope to roll that out to more people someday soon.

So stay tuned! You’ll get updates here or at @changes.

alexafaie asked:

Hi,

The community I created got approved and I was looking at the different options and things before sending out invites or posting to say that people could ask for one. I clicked the button to invite members and it just showed a random list of accounts whereas I expected to at least get to pick from a list of blogs I follow and who I therefore know might be interested in joining.

It will let me search for people to invite, but I don't remember all the names of the blogs I follow to just search that way.

Are there any plans to at least make the default selection of blogs to send invites to be blogs you follow or who follow you? Would be way easier than having to flick between tabs to copy paste names.

Answer: Hello, @alexafaie!

Thanks for raising this with us—it’s a good point.

We are glad to say that we are currently working on improving that list and have recently updated it to prioritize showing your recently-followed blogs. We hope this comes as good news!

Thanks for the feedback, and have a lovely day. Keep the Communities questions coming, folks.

fourcheesecalzone asked:

Some people with mature blogs ask that anyone who follows or interacts with them have their age in their bio to "prove that they aren't a minor." Would it be possible to let people show their birthday that is required when making an account in the description of a blog, or maybe a seperate age section extrapolated from the birthday, since that can't be changed?

Answer: Hey there, @fourcheesecalzone!

So, this is something of a tricky one. Albeit a good one, too.

The general idea of adding more customization options for your identity on Tumblr, like showing your age or your registration date or links to About pages and the like, is certainly something we want to work on someday. We can say this for sure.

However, just your age, on its own, is not something we would want to expose. It would have to come with bigger changes to how we display information about people on the platform. How exactly we tackle these questions is still ongoing, but it’s a good question, and we hope to have updates for you before too long. You will catch these here or over at @changes.

Thanks for your question, and we hope this helps for now.

bulletsandbracelets asked:

Heya!

Sent this another place, but I wonder if there’s been much thought put into making it easier for people to find blogs they want to follow?

It seems like tumblr works better when users are able to find content themselves rather than be served it by an algorithm. And since they are following for the blog, not an individual post, it would make a lot of sense to offer better blog searching tools.

Something like blog categories/tags, and specific ones for artists who take commissions etc, could be a good start. Then blogs with a specific function could categorize themselves in a number of ways and get a little more visibility.

Just feels like a lot of focus has been put on making things easier to find, and increasing reach, but a lot of that is focused on posts and not the blogs doing the posting. Embracing the idea that people on tumblr are empowered to find the creators they want to follow could allow new users to find what they need and old users to keep using tumblr the way they enjoy - without having to deal with invasive suggestions. Just a thought! Hope y’all have a great day!

Answer: Hey there, @bulletsandbracelets!

So we can say here that this is a great line of thought, and we think about the same thing frequently. But let us reiterate that this is why it’s important to use tags in posts—we use tag usage to try to elevate blogs in search results and recommendations!

As for blog categories and topics, it is unlikely we’d ever go that far. But we are currently working on one or two things that will have categories and topics—and maybe help people find blogs to follow. What this space, here.

Finally, we will add that there are a couple of places where you can find top blogs by tag:

  1. Search
image

2. Your tags

And, finally, the For You feed is a great place to find blogs worth following!

Thanks for your question, and good luck!

cyphyree asked:

Deleting a single side-blog is deleting all blogs including the primary one... it seems that this is either a bug or UI being unclear?

Is there a way to delete side blogs without completely erasing all blogs?

Answer: Hello, @cyphyree!

So, we’ve been testing this vigorously and have been unable to reproduce the issue. We have persisted, just in case this is an edge case we haven’t found yet, but we have reached out to you directly for further clarification.

Relatedly, we should note that we have recently made some updates to clarify that deleting the main blog will delete your entire account. The “Delete account” button is now only in Settings, at the bottom, and no longer in your main blog’s settings. You can find out more here in this post from @changes.

Thanks for your question!

greighish asked:

Hi. Please consider adding "since [date]" "following for [relative time]" next to the blogs in the following list so we can see how long we've been following a blog. Also the ability to toggle it on/off. Especially since people change their blog names, it would be nice to be able to somewhat connect the dots.

Answer: Hi, @greighish!

Now this is a great idea! And something we certainly hope to do someday when we have the time, space, and people power to prioritize work on the Following feed.

Leave this one with us. We hope to be back with updates here or at @changes, and hopefully before too long.

winged-mammal asked:

Could we get an option to only back up our blogs from a certain date of our choosing, instead of the whole thing every time? It'd save a whole lot of download space for those of us who've done it before and/or have been here for a long time.

Answer: Hey, @winged-mammal!

That would indeed be pretty cool! Though we must be straight with you here—as things stand, it’s very unlikely we’d ever get around to doing it, sadly.

If that ever were to change, you can of course find out here or over at @changes

Thanks for getting in touch, and have a good day.

auberginebear asked:

Are you ever going to change how multi user blogs operate? I've got one where there are blogs still with admin abilities but the blogs have been abandoned and I want to kick them, but the person who started the blog shouldn't have to give up that level of control unless they want, and it shouldn't take admin powers for other users to be able to answers asks. And I'm pretty sure it isn't just me who would like this feature added.

Answer: Hello, @auberginebear!

As it happens, we are already underway with some work in @labs that may just help remedy what you’ve asked, here. Let’s just say an experiment or two, and it keep it coy.

However, this is a little uncertain, and unfortunately there is nothing more we can say on this right now. Keep an eye here on @labs for any updates, as promised. And we hope to have news sooner than later!

Why can't we follow 500+ blogs? I want to follow but i can’t. I think 500 is a very small number when the use of social media has increased so much in this era. It should be increased. Thank you.

Hello there, @maytheangelsprotectme!

We also think 500 blogs is a small number! We do have a daily limit, which is 200 blogs, but our total following limit is currently 5,000 blogs per account!

If you’re still having trouble following other blogs, we would also suggest opening a support ticket with us, in which you may add all the details, and we can take a look for you.

We hope this helps, and thanks for your question!

Best,

—Julia (Tumblr Engineering)
