This paper explores discursive ways in which hotels may improve their own websites using online criticism to adjust to customer preferences. To this end, a combined method was used, consisting of a netnographic approach (Kozinet, 2010; Mkono, 2011, 2012) together with an interpersonal discourse framework (Hyland, 2008) applied to e-tourism genres (Suau-Jiménez, 2012, 2016). Four hotel websites, together with 200 corresponding negative reviews from TripAdvisor were diachronically analyzed to identify common topics. Attitudinals were sought, being the core markers of online critiques, as well as boosters, acting as enhancing markers in hotel websites and paralleling criticized topics. Results suggest that hotel website adjustments may use enhancements following particular marketing strategies and referring to certain areas complained about in online reviews. This implies that the discursive adjustment of hotel websites using enhancers are a means for hoteliers to improve the website description of hotel services, as well as to indirectly manage customer dissatisfaction in a positive and effective manner.

Credibility is a function associated with promotional genres and persuasion, and a powerful marketing concept (Eisend, 2006; Ming, 2006) which provides trustworthiness about the quality of products or services offered by hotels (Suau-Jiménez, 2012a, 2019). It is partly attained through the hotel’s self-mentioning in websites. When this self-mentioning is agentive with action verbs, the main instantiation is the pronoun we, projecting closeness and assertiveness. However, this self-representation is also construed with depersonalized realizations like the hotel’s proper name, other nominalizations or even pronouns like it and they, which provide attenuating aspects and create a sense of distance. The current corpus-based study of 112 hotel websites hypothesizes that this attenuation may diminish closeness of the authorial voice (Brown & Levinson, 1987), thus displaying authority, following disciplinary and generic constraints. Results suggest that discursive closeness and distance, intertwined with personalized and depersonalized self-representations of the authorial voice, may aid to improve credibility.

This article attempts to make a theoretical and methodological proposal based on the several critiques of the identified need to redefine interpersonal metadiscourse (IM) (Hyland, 2005, 2008). As a framework for the analysis of genres in specialized domains and languages other than English, IM presents important flaws, as is propositionality and the diversion of lexico-grammatical realizations of markers. Our proposal is based upon results of our own research, which focused on interpersonality, and points towards the need of a different interpersonal discourse framework, with a broader methodological projection.

This paper suggests that interpersonality as a framework for analysis is always necessarily conditioned by contextual variables. Genre and discipline, together with language and culture, challenge the initial model of metadiscourse (Vande Kopple, 1985; Crismore et al., 1993) as well as other approaches to interpersonal metadiscourse (Hyland & Tse, 2004; Hyland, 2005) that take English and academic discourse as their main referents. A model of interpersonality should be understood as containing variables, in order to cater for more insightful and accurate analyses. It is argued that stance and engagement voices (author and reader) (White 2003; Hyland, 2008), as construed in non-academic genres like traveller forums and tourism promotional websites, bring new data into the interpersonality framework, something that can fine-tune this model. To this end, the results of several corpus-based researches in these two webgenres have been resorted to (Suau-Jiménez, 2011, 2012a, 2012b, 2014a), as well as studies on interpersonality and discourse that include cultural, generic and disciplinary aspects (Dahl, 2004; Yakhontova, 2006; Sala, 2006; Giannoni, 2007; Gotti, 2010). Both sub-corpora of traveller forums and tourism promotional websites in English and Spanish belong to the COMETVAL corpus (Corpus Multilingüe de Turismo, Universitat de València)

This paper reports a pilot research done with the COMENEGO corpus in order to identify
metadiscursive interpersonal markers in two of its sub-corpora specialities: commerce (COM) and
press (PRS), in Spanish, containing digital texts which main functions are respectively to persuade
and to inform readers. The aim is to provide a new tool that aids translators to deal with this
interpersonal aspect of source and target texts, without which translations can suffer from a lack of
adjustment due to the metadiscursive socio-linguistic pattern that each language, genre and/or
speciality displays. The analysis starts identifying the most relevant discursive functions that every
speciality contains, after which a frequency analysis is applied to the sub-corpus so as to get a
wordlist and concordancing of the most salient interpersonal markers and categories. This leads to
a final pattern proposal that characterizes each speciality both quantitative and qualitatively.
Keywords: interpersonal metadiscourse, translation, corpus linguistics, digital texts.

Nowadays, the traveller/tourist is the one who increasingly manages her/his own trips and journeys through the internet, without any aid of intermediaries such a travel agents, etc. As a result, a new term has been coined, that of tourist 2.0, her/his decisions depending directly from the web sites announcing touristic services and products. Therefore, specific linguistic and visual mechanisms and strategies have to be borne in mind when constructing these promotional web sites so as to assist their generic persuasive aim. These linguistic strategies are realized by means of specific rhetorical functions such as description, exemplification, suggestion, etc. and of interpersonality, the discursive interactional function that designates the relation between text sender and receiver through specific markers that vary cross-linguistically and modulate persuasion through the actual production of those rhetorical functions. It is then absolutely necessary to identify and analyzethesestrategies and their cross-linguistic differences in order to incorporate them systematically into the contents of touristic promotion web sites.
Keywords: tourist 2.0, rhetorical functions, interpersonality/ interactional function, linguistic strategies, markers, persuasion.

Tourism 2.0 involves direct e-communication between travellers and the tourism industry, and needs websites that attract customers. Recent research in this field (Austin 2009; Brodie, Hollebeek et al. 2011) suggests that they must also include the co-creation of values that align with the customer in some way. Their design must be persuasive yet trustworthy. This is partly achieved through discursive strategies that reflect the voice of the institution or business (author), and others that engage the customer (reader). This study discusses engagement as a key concept in promotional websites (hotels, tourist guides, etc.) from interpersonality, based on the COMETVAL corpus. Its conclusions note significant and controversial differences on how these e-genres are construed in English and Spanish, with societal implications.

New information and communication technologies (ICT) have burst into all spheres of our lives, modifying them in ways inconceivable barely 10 years ago. Generally speaking, these modifications have enhanced interaction processes (telecommunications), work and human production (task automation). The field of professional translation has been particularly affected by this technological revolution and has led to new research, professional and didactic paradigms, known as Automatic Translation and Computer Aided Translation. This is the framework for our present work, which attempts to put together the development of communicative (linguistic) competences with procedural (instrumental) and evaluative ones (professional translation self-assessment) in the didactics of scientific and technical translation.

This volume attempts to provide a state-of-the-art view of research into interdisciplinarity, language and ICT with an overview of teaching proposals within a university context. Interdisciplinarity is understood here as how language expresses the discourse and lexis of specialized knowledge in science, technology and the professions. Language helps in the creation of these different fields and constitutes a strategic tool that, if harnessed correctly, will facilitate competitiveness on an international level, in order to boost technological, scientific, economic and educational growth. Interdisciplinarity thus constitutes the central axis, which focuses on language together with Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), while taking into account the real needs of industry, commerce, translation, and language needs in the professions and educational institutions.
The contributions in this volume deal with themes which are crucial to the demands of our modern society: intercultural business communications, one of the most challenging areas of specialized discourse and commerce; ICT and specialized translation, a current issue of utmost relevance terminology applied to translation; language acquisition in virtual environments; training interpreters through ICT, exploring the commercial needs of language industries; corpus-based research and ICT applications in specialized dictionaries; university e-learning courses and, finally, the state of research on specialized languages in Latin-America.

One group of students was trained in learning strategies applied to unknown business vocabulary and was contrasted with another group who didn't receive any training at all in guessing new vocab. Interpersonal markers are an important tool when writing, especially in genres that aim at persuading the reader. These markers establish a relationship between writer and reader, although they may not be part of the propositional content of the text. This is why they are also called metadiscursive markers. More specifically, it is the writer who decides which markers to use and when, in order to influence the reader, either directly (addressing her/him through personal pronouns or verbs in the imperative –directives-) or indirectly, using adjectives, adverbs or expressions that show her/his attitude or opinion about the topic which is being dealt with. The ultimate purpose is, as stated above, to influence the reader in different ways: by modulating and not imposing ideas, suggesting or showing solidarity, giving opinions, etc. There are different types of markers, each having its own function. Interpersonal markers are never nouns, although they can be verbs, adjectives or adverbs. This document is meant to help students mastering the expression of persuasion through interpersonal markers.
