Abstract: The aim of this study was to verify the relation between body mass index (BMI) and sitting time in a sample of 4,091 Azorean men. BMI was calculated from self-reported weight and height. Total physical activity (PA) time and total sitting time were assessed with the IPAQ (short version). Linear Regression analysis showed that total sitting time (hours/day) was positively associated with BMI (B = 0.078; p < 0.001) after adjustments for age, meal frequency, alcohol and tobacco consumptions, island of residence, education level and total PA time. Although the cross sectional design precludes us from establishing causality, our findings emphasize the importance of reducing sedentary behavior to decrease the risk of obesity.

Previous studies have shown that some environmental features may be associated with PA levels.Objectives: Find and comprehend which environmental features were mostly positively associated with children’s physical activity.Methods: Twenty-eight studies that assessed association between the environmental features and physical activity among children (ages 3 to 12-years) and fulfilled selection criteria were systematically reviewed.Results: Results across the various studies showed that facilities and parks/playgrounds are mostly positively associated with children’s PA. Sidewalks and bike lanes were positively associated to PA in all studies. Introduction: The alarming increase in obesity worldwide and the decrease in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) levels among adolescents are of concern in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between body fatness, CRF, and inflammatory markers [C-reactive protein (C-RP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and leptin] in a sample of Portuguese adolescents. Hypothesis: We assessed the hypothesis that adolescents with higher body fatness and lower CRF levels will have an increased level of inflammatory markers. Methods: A cross-sectional school-based study was conducted on 529 Portuguese adolescents (268 girls) aged 12-18 years (mean age 14.3±1.7). Body fatness (BF) was assessed using the Bioelectric Impedance Analysis. Intravenous blood samples were taken after an overnight fast to determine inflammatory markers (C-RP, IL-6, TNF-α, and leptin). CRF was measured with the 20m-Shuttle-Run-Test from the Fitnessgram battery test as number of laps. Pearson correlation was used for bivariate associations between BF, CRF and inflammatory markers. Linear regression analyses were used to examine the association between BF, CRF and inflammation markers with adjustments for age and sex. Results: Pearson’s correlation analyses, adjusted for age and sex, revealed that BF was positively correlated with leptin (r=0.640, P No associations were found between BF, CRF and IL-6. Four databases (i.e., PubMed, EBSCO, Web of Science, and Cochrane) were searched for research trials, which included comparison groups of employees that assessed PA programs, musculoskeletal pain, and health-related behaviors, published between January 1990 and March 2013. The goal of this study was to investigate the association of physical activity (PA) and cardiorespiratory fitness with C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration in adolescents. The sample included 386 Portuguese adolescents (n = 207, female), age 12-18 years, assessed in the year 2012. The PA was assessed with the use of accelerometers, and the cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed by the Fitnessgram Pacer test. Blood samples were collected after a 10-hour fasting, and high-sensitivity PCR concentration was further assessed. Significant associations between CRP and cardiorespiratory fitness were found for females (r = -0.313; p < 0.001) and males (r = -0.163; p < 0.05); however, when adjusted by the BMI, the associations remained significant only for females (r = -0.215; p < 0.001). ABSTRACT Physical activity (PA) in childhood and adolescence plays an important role in the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adulthood. The association between physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) with C-reactive protein (CRP), is relatively well reported in adults; however, in childhood and adolescence that knowledge is still lower. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness and C-reactive protein in children and adolescents. A cross-sectional school-based study was conducted on 386 Portuguese adolescents (179 girls) aged 12–18 years (mean age 14.03 ± 1.64). The blood samples were taken after an overnight fast and measured for hsCRP, physical activity was measured by accelerometry and CRF was measured by the 20-m-shuttle-run-test from the Fitnessgram Battery Tests, body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Spearman correlation was used for associations between PA, CRF and CRP, with adjustments for BMI, age and sex. The results of the tests showed a negative correlation between CRP and CRF in females (−0.31, p < 0.001) and males (−0.16, p < 0.05), however, independent of BMI only in females (−0.21, p < 0.001). No significant associations were found between CRP and PA. Thus, it was observed that apparently CRP is associated negatively with the CRF, but differently according to gender, and in the female it seems less dependent on BMI. Our findings emphasize the importance of increasing CRF levels; however, longitudinal studies in larger scale are necessary to better explain this relationship.

The aim of the present study was to verify if physical activity (PA) behavior (steps/day) was associated with environmental features that may be able to promote PA and walking in a sample of Portuguese adolescents living in the Azorean Archipelago. The sample comprised 948 adolescents aged 15-18 years (543 girls) from the Azorean Physical Activity Health Study II. PA was objectively measured with pedometers. Participants were classified as active if they belong to percentile 75th (by age and gender) or more. Environmental perceptions were assessed with a questionnaire. Few studies have reported associations between clustering metabolic risk factors and socioeconomic status (SES) in youth. This study aimed to analyze the association between clustering metabolic risk factors and SES in adolescents. It was hypothesized that SES is inversely related to clustering metabolic risk factors. This 2009 cross-sectional school-based study investigated 517 Portuguese adolescents ages 15-18 years. The study considered the age- and sex-adjusted z-scores for the ratio of total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein, homeostasis model, triglycerides, and systolic blood pressure, and a metabolic risk score was constructed by summing all the z-scores (≥1 standard deviation was considered high risk). Cardiorespiratory fitness was estimated by the 20 m shuttle-run test and dietary intake by a food frequency questionnaire. The best of parental education was used as a proxy measure of SES. The results showed that adolescents with low SES were more likely to have a high metabolic risk score (odds ratio [OR], 1.96; p < 0.020) regardless of cardiorespiratory fitness, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, or pubertal stage. In conclusion, a lower SES was associated with increased risk for a high metabolic risk score among Azorean adolescents after adjustment for pubertal stage, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Future health-promotion strategies among Azorean adolescents should consider the impact of SES on their health.
