After a long quarrel scattered with persecutions, uprisings, dismissals and replacements of religious authorities, deaths, military expeditions, confiscations and attempts of assassinations in Greece, Italy and other European areas, the Council of Nicaea, in 787, imposed the victory of the iconodules in the Byzantine Empire. The West, especially the Kingdom of the Franks and the Lombards ruled by Charles, later known as Charlemagne, tried to take an official position in the synod of Frankfurt in 794 and in an odd and complex treatise, comprising four books, entitled Opus Caroli, or Libri Carolini, which were recently attributed by Ann Freeman to Theodulf of Orleans, one of the greatest intellectuals of his time. In this work, which we could call the first western treatise on images, the icon is freed from its ritual and cult value, and returned to its artistic use, thus determining, according to some scholars, the larger freedom of figurative representation that characterizes western religious art as compared with the Orthodox one. This stance is followed by a lively debate, involving many authors, the materials of which have not yet been translated and put into full circulation in historical-artistic research.

This contribute presents the edition, with introduction and commentary both textual and musical, of the “Confessio beati Isidori”, a 34 hexameters poem, probably written in the VII-VIII century Spain, transmitted by the ms. Paris, B.n.F. lat. 8093 and provided with later neumes. The content is connected with the Afro-hispanic tradition of penitential and confessional poetry like the “De satisfactione poenitentiae” of Verecundus Iuncensis and the rythmical “Exhortatio poenitendi”

This book presents samples of experimental methods for reading medieval Latin texts that have scarcely been adopted, if at all, by mainstream research in the field. It contributes to the discovery of some underestimated aspects of early medieval (especially Carolingian) Latin literature: intertextuality as intercultural relationship (in Biblical epic), intermediality (text-image-sound connections), interdisciplinarity (science, religion, and poetry), hermeneutics (Biblical exegesis as poetry-engine), post-colonial reading (medieval Latin as a second language), socio-literary approaches (monastic epigraphs as witnesses of everyday life, writing as a status symbol of an intellectual class and a whole civilization). It also discusses quantitative methods, which are explored in more detail in a second volume, Digital Philology and Quantitative Criticism of Medieval Literature: Unconventional Approaches to Medieval Latin Literature II): http://www.brepols.net/Pages/ShowProduct.aspx?prod_id=IS-9782503588018-1. The book thus seeks to encourage scholarly interest in obscure or less familiar elements of the Carolingian literary renewal, interpreted here as more a laboratory of innovations than a revival of traditional patterns.

Statistical research on a corpus of Latin letters-collections from Cicero to Plinius to Augustine, Abaelard and Petrarch with analysis of the constants which appear in every collection and of individual features which characterize single corpora or authors. Particular attention is payed to the most frequent words or words-sequences, the distribution of a special subset of function words and the overlap of lexical forms between every couple of authors

The paper outlines a status quaestionis on the application of statistical methods in the linguistic analysis of Latin texts, and presents an enquiry into letters collections of a broad chronological range, from the epistles of Cicero through Pliny and Augustine up to Alcuin, Abelard and Petrarch, reckoning the number of the forms and the quality of the most frequent words shared by all authors or by some authors, as well as the words that are individual, the rate of common vocabulary and the rate of vocabulary which depends on the time or on the relation between authors. The research group has used the free software “Analisi Lessicale”, establishing a protocol that can be adopted for analogous queries, and the results seem to demonstrate that such a method manages to highlight features of genre and of individual style.

The textual heritage of Medieval Latin is one of the greatest reservoirs of human culture. Repertories list more than 13,174 authors from about 20 modern countries. Until now, there has been no introduction to this world in its full geographical extension. Forty contributors fill this gap by adopting a new perspective, making available to specialists (but also to the interested public) new materials and insights. The project presents an overview of Medieval (and post-medieval) Latin Literatures as a global phenomenon including both Europe and extra-European regions. It introduces to the Latin Middle Ages' complex and multi-layered culture, whose attraction has been underestimated until now. Traditional overviews mostly flatten specificities, yet in many countries medieval Latin literature is still studied with reference to the local history. Thus the first section presents 20 regional surveys, including chapters on authors and works of Latin Literature in Eastern Central Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. Following chapters highlight shared patterns of circulation, adaptation, and exchange, and underline the appeal of medieval intermediality, as evidenced in manuscripts, maps, scientific treatises and iconotexts, and its performativity in narrations, theatre, sermons and music. The last section deals with literary "interfaces," that is motifs or characters that exemplify the double-sided or the long-term transformations of medieval Latin mythologemes in vernacular culture, both vernacular and modern, such as the legends about King Arthur, Faust, and Hamlet.

One of the most important developments in European history took place in communication. A transition is clearly visible from illiterate societies to societies in which most members are active users of the written word. This complex process, which started in Antiquity, and is still not complete, gained momentum during the Middle Ages. This series is intended to provide a forum for publications on the history of non-verbal, oral and written communication in the Middle Ages. Interest in the subject is now widespread within the worldwide community of medieval studies; and ever more scholars are becoming convinced of the potential of studying the tensions between oral and literate modes of thought.
