Abstract. Stable component models are an essential prerequisite for developing customer-individual business applications. Thereby the information for the identification and specification of their components is gained from domain models. Reference models constitute a potential source for building enterprise-specific domain models. Based on the analysis of existing reference models, this article shows how information available through reference models can be used for the development of stable component models. The derivation of information required for the identification and specification of reusable business components is discussed using example reference modelling techniques. Additionally, potential extensions of existing reference modelling techniques are shown. 1.

In order to better perform in such value networks information systems supporting not only the intra- but also the inter-enterprise business processes are necessary in order to enable and ease collaboration between business partners. Therefore, they need to be interoperable. As the basis for building these information systems the concepts of enterprise ontology and business components are very promising. The notion of enterprise ontology, as presented in this paper, is a powerful revelation of the essence of an enterprise or an enterprise network. For the design and engineering of enterprises, several methodologies are available that successfully address certain aspects of design problems in enterprises or certain domains. In real-world design problems it is essential to choose the right means to reach the desired ends. Often it is not apparent which methodology is best chosen in order to reach desired ends. Additionally, real-world design problems often require several such methodologies to be combined because multiple aspects have to be covered and/or the problem combines characteristics of several domains. In order to allow for a systematically understanding and comparison of methodologies and for a facilitation of their composition (if necessary), we propose a general conceptual framework. The contribution of this paper is twofold. We revisit the three-cycle procedural view of Design Science Research (DSR) as introduced by Hevner, and we propose a structuring mechanism for the DSR Knowledge Base (KB) and the problem/context specification that supports our revisited DSR procedure. Regarding the first contribution, we argue that each design cycle has rigor related as well as relevance related aspects. We therefore introduce a one-cycle view of DSR, comprised of alternating core activities design and evaluation. With every iteration, the understanding of the environment and the problem to be solved are enhanced. Additionally, every design iteration allows for revisiting the Knowledge Base in order to improve the problem solution. Concerning the second contribution, we propose to structure the DSR KB by means of two two-dimensional maps to support an efficient search for existing, reusable solution artifacts. The deployment of business components in large enterprise information systems offers great potential. Nonetheless the process of finding and defining the right business components is very challenging. While the definition of business components is comparatively simple for small business domains, it becomes very complex for larger domains of interest. This paper illustrates the experiences made during the modeling process of an integrated information system architecture for Customer Relation Management (CRM) and Supply Chain Management (SCM) with more than 500 functions and 1000 information objects under usage of the Business Component Identification (BCI)-Method. Based on this experience possible enhancements and needed extensions for the BCI-Method are proposed and explained.

Though many organizations are aware that a good service portfolio is important, only few can explain what they actually mean by "good". Often, the service identification process is performed in an ad-hoc manner result-ing in an unbalanced or incomplete service portfolio. Currently no method for service identification exists that can be followed like a recipe in a cook book, but research is progressing. In this white paper we discuss the pros and cons of several service identification approaches. We show two of them (i.e. the goal-driven approach and the component-based approach) in more detail and give examples of an insurance case study.

Modern enterprises face a strong economical pressure to increase competitiveness, to operate on a global market, and to engage in alliances of several kinds. Agility thus has become the new guiding principle for enterprises. This requires flexible organizational structures and business processes, as well as flexible supporting information systems and a flexible information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure. In addition, an enterprise needs to be able to easily expand or shrink, be it through collaborations with other enterprises, through mergers or acquisitions, or through insourcing or outsourcing of services. In order to meet these economical requirements, enterprises rely increasingly on the benefits of modern ICT. However, the appropriate knowledge to deploy this technology as needed, and in an effective and efficient way, is largely lacking,particularly knowledge regarding the cooperation in and between enterprises and knowledge regarding the interoperability of their information systems.

Compositional reuse of components requires standardised techniques to specify software components, especially if applications are created by combining third party components which are traded on component markets. Especially for business components - components executing a specific business task - it is essen- tial that the corresponding business logic can clearly be identified and that the in- terfaces are clearly specified. This is only possible with a formal specification. In order to motivate and to teach component developers to specify their business components using formal methods, a tool has been developed supporting the speci- fication process.

ABSTRACT Business rules are in the center of attention, both in the ‘business world’ and in the ‘ICT applications world’. Recently, the OMG has completed a major study in defining the notion of business rule and its associated notions. On closer look, however, the definitions provided appear to be not as rigid and precise as one would hope and as deemed necessary. Based on the consistent and coherent theoretical framework of Enterprise Ontology, several clarifications of the core notions regarding business rules are presented. They are illustrated by means of a small example case.

ABSTRACT With this Symposium for PhD students associated with the “On The Move Federated Conferences” we present the second edition of an event stimulating PhD students to summarise and present their results on an international forum. The Symposium supports PhD students in their research by offering an internationally highly reputed publication channel, namely the Springer LNCS proceedings of the OTM workshops, and by providing an opportunity to gain ample feedback from prominent professors. More specifically, students receive general advice on making the most of their research environment, on how to focus their objectives, on how to establish their methods, and on how to adequately present their results. These eminent professors thus help establishing a dialogue setting of scientific interrogation, discussion, reflexion and guidance between students and mentors. Kapitel 4 widmet sich der Zusammenfassung von eng zusammengehörenden Modelltypen zu BEN-Komponenten, um für das BE Problemlösungsfragemente für die Analyse und Gestaltung von Geschäftslösungen zur Verfügung zu stellen. Dafür werden zuerst die Zusammenhänge der in Kapitel 2 eingeführten Modelltypen analysiert und zu BEN-Komponenten zusammengefasst. Danach werden die Charakteristika der einzelnen Komponenten erläutert und deren Einsatz in den verschiedenen BE-Projekttypen illustriert. Ein groβer Teil dieses Kapitels widmet sich am Schluss den Analyse- und Gestaltungsaufgaben der einzelnen BENKomponenten.

ABSTRACT Due to the integration of renewable energies, the electricity grid is confronted with new peak situations that are caused by the new power plants. Beside these threats new metering technologies combined with information systems enable new pricing options that were not affordable for retail customers before. This paper contributes to the field by combining demand charging incentives with a feed in tariff for photovoltaics. Demand charges are a broadly used pricing concept for large scale and industrial customers but are not used for retail customers yet. In a simulation we first of all show the impact of solar plants on the grid. Secondly, we simulate the shift in electricity demand caused by a demand charge for retail customers. Our simulation shows that the solar panels reduce the purchased quantity of electricity while leaving the maximum peak unchanged. This leads to reduced revenues for grid operators without changing the costs. This negative impact can be improved by the demand charge for retail customers.

ABSTRACT In recent years, the WSDL and UDDI standards arose as ad-hoc standards for the definition of service interfaces and service registries. However, even together these standards do not provide enough basis for a service consumer to get a full understanding of the behavior of a service. In practice this often leads to a serious mismatch between the provider's intent and the consumer's expectations concerning the functionality of the corresponding service. Though additional standards have been proposed, a holistic view of what aspects of a service need to be specified is still lacking. This paper proposes a service definition, a service classification, and service specification framework, all based on a founded theory, the Psi-theory. The Psi-theory originates from the scientific fields of Language Philosophy and Systemic Ontology. According to this theory, the operation of organizations is all about communication between and production by social actors. The service specification framework can be applied both for specifying human services, i.e. services executed by human beings, and IT services, i.e. services executed by IT systems.

To improve the performance of web database access for regular users, we have developed a client caching agent, referred to as a personal assistant. In addition to caching strategies based on data characteristics and user specification, the personal assistant dynamically prefetches information based on previously monitored user access patterns. It is part of an overall multi-layered caching scheme where cache coherency is ensured through cooperation with a server-side database caching agent. The personal assistant has been implemented in Java and integrated into the web architecture for the OMS~Pro database management system.

Based on changing market conditions companies are more and more focusing on their core competencies while outsourcing supporting processes to their business partners. The outsourcing of business processes results in a strong dependency between companies and their business partners building so called value networks. In order to perform well in such value networks, the selection of both direct and indirect suppliers is of main importance. Potential supply networks need therefore to be identified and evaluated in order to strategically select the appropriate supply network. The selection of adequate supply networks, satisfying evaluation criteria defined by the OEM, is the topic of this paper. It builds on preparatory work done in the area of strategic supply network development, where the identification and dynamic modeling of strategic supply networks has been elaborated, and focuses on the evaluation of strategic supply networks providing the base for supply network selection.

This paper presents the definition of a setup process that has to be performed before an ad hoc inter-organizational collaboration can start. Within this process agreement on collaboration content can be achieved as well as an overall coordination protocol can be constructed which defines a chronological order of tasks out of single protocols that describe the information exchanges that are necessary to coordinate given tasks. Our goal is to define a component-based architecture that implements this process and uses the outcomes to dynamically configure itself. Using this architecture it will be possible to technically support a wide range of ad hoc collaboration scenarios as long as mismatches can be resolved. Due to the extensibility of component-based architectures it will be possible to easily deploy additional components implementing for example a new coordination standard for transactions which then can be used as one possible assignment to a protocol vector position. Future work therefore is twofold: the presented setup process has to be refined and implemented, and the component model as well as the composition model for the architecture has to be defined. For negotiation, compatibility testing, and mediator generation previous work in the fields of agent communication and component interoperability will be further examined and integrated.

With the deployment of specialized application systems e.g. customer relationship management (CRM) or supply chain management (SCM), the interconnection of enterprises becomes more and more complex. At the same time the need for exchanging information between enterprises, being part of different value networks, increases. This interconnection of enterprises is often hampered as data structures as well as functionality is difficult to integrate. The deployment of an integrated information system architecture (ISA) would facilitate inter-organizational integration and reduce data management problems at the same time. This paper illustrates on basis of two examples how an integrated information system architecture for CRM and SCM can strengthen inter-organizational integration and enable a continuous exchange of information between all enterprises, which are involved in the value network.

The identification of business components, which together define a modular systems architecture, is a key task in todays component-based development approaches for the business domain. This paper describes the Business Component Identification (BCI) method which supports a systematic partitioning of a problem domain into business components. The method allows the designer to state preferences for the partitioning process and uses them as the basis to produce an optimized balance between the business components’ granularity on the one hand and their context dependencies on the other hand. It makes use of business domain models specified during the definition of system requirements and can be integrated into the early design phase of a component-based development process. The paper also shows how the produced partitioning can easily be refined into an architecture specification and thus can be used as a starting point for the technical design of a software system and/or its business components.

However, a lack of formal methodological backing, and the absence of proven collaboration concepts and architectures have up to now limited the impact of IOS in practical application. In this paper, we focus on external coordination requirements in IOS based on an analysis of B2B protocol standards, and system theory based classification of IOS elements. A protocol vector is introduced to represent the set of protocols used in a particular collaboration scenario. A flexible component-based architecture is proposed in order to implement the protocol vector. Therefore, a process for derivation of required components is introduced, and a selected part of the architecture is presented.
