Component Based Software Engineering

The use of software-intensive solutions for industrial automation and control systems has been a promising trend due to the flexibility, interoperability, and cost savings provided by such an approach. This paper presents a component-based framework for the development of industrial supervision and control systems, which provides reusable solutions for data acquisition, control, and supervision activities. Interoperability and real- time issues are handled by the implementation of the DAIS (Data Acquisition for Industrial Systems) standard, in conjunction with the use of CIAO, a real-time implementation of the CCM (CORBA Component Model) standard. We present the design and implementation of the proposed framework, as well as two application examples built atop our software platform: a chemical reactor supervisory and a cruise control system simulation.

—In previous publications we have introduced the concept of using a component-based software engineering paradigm to build Internet-enabled applications. We have proposed that this design allows for greater flexibility in deployment, better utilisation of resources and a reduction in total application development effort. We have described a system and realised that system as an API that can be used to design, build and execute such components. In this report we provide an overview of the key system components and present an implementation of an application developed using the system. We use this application to perform experimental and functional comparisons to show that the system provides advancements over the status quo. Component-Based Software Engineering (CBSE) does not yet fully address non-functional re-quirements of embedded systems. To reach this goal, we show how to extend a component model like FRACTAL with relevant abstractions such as threads, protection rings, or security domains. The FRACTAL Architecture Description Language (ADL) is extended by means of proper-ties that tag components, bindings, and interfaces of the system architectural definition with execu-tion schemes, dynamic reconfiguration strategies, protection and isolation patterns, or QoS fea-tures. Each extension captures a property-specific “system view ” offering a sound basis to address some non-functional requirement. These exten-sions were experimented in the THINK frame-work, a C-based implementation of FRACTAL. Results show that THINK provides a generic and efficient approach to fully support these exten-sions thanks to a customizable toolchain. 1.

Component-Based Software Engineering (CBSE) is one of the approaches to master the development of large scale software. In this setting, the verification concern is still a challenge. The current work addresses the composability of components and their services. A component model (Kmelia) is introduced; an associated formalism, simple but expressive is introduced; it describes the services as extended LTSs and their structuring as components. The composability of components is defined on the basis of the composability of services. To ensure the correctness of component composition, we check that an assembly is possible via the checking of the composability of the linked services, and their behavioural compatibility. In order to mechanize our approach, the services and the components are translated into the Lotos formalism. Finally the Lotos CADP toolbox is used to perform experiments.

The popularity of the open source software development in the last decade, has brought about an increased interest from the industry on how to use open source components, participate in the open source community, build business models around this type of software development, and learn more about open source development methodologies. There is a need to understand the results of research in this area.Since there is a need to understand conducted research, the aim of this study is to summarize the findings of research that has ben carried out on usage of open source components and development methodologies by the industry, as well as companies’ participation in the open source community.Systematic review through searches in library databases and manual identification of articles from the open source conference. The search was first carried out in May 2009 and then once again in May 2010.In 2009, 237 articles were first found, from which 19 were selected based on content and quality, and in 2010, 76 new articles were found from which four were selected. Twenty three articles were identified in total.The articles could be divided into four categories: open source as part of component based software engineering, business models with open source in commercial organization, company participation in open source development communities, and usage of open source processes within a company.

Agile methods have been increasingly adopted as a way to increase the speed and flexibility of software development whilst maintaining or improving quality. However, organisations with a heavy investment in, and emphasis on, more traditional software engineering approaches may regard the wholesale adoption of agile methods as being potentially risky. As a result, a number of experiments in hybrid approaches have been made, suggesting that a combination of agile methods and traditional software engineering can be a route to quality software development. Further, that component based software engineering has an important role to play. In this paper we review the key issues in this debate and propose that test related practises are the most significant enabler in providing quality assurance in hybrid systems.

Abstract. We discuss some of the difficulties and significant issues that we need to consider when,developing a formal method,for component-based,software en- gineering. We argue that to deal with the challenges, there is a need in research to link existing theories and methods,of programming,for effective support to component-based,software engineering.
