On the other hand, its perception and acceptance as normative are rapidly changing in every part of the globe, thanks to feminism, policies derived from studies of gendered violence, and global phenomena such as #Metoo. In this change, the medium of television has played and continues to play a fundamental role, both as a receiver and diffuser of the collective imaginary, and as a generator of its transformations. In this essay we ask about the specific logics that emerge from television narrative in relation to violence against women, especially around rape.

ABSTRACT This essay deals with the topic of violence against women in a cross-national, transdisciplinary perspective. Through the investigation of a vast empirical, theoretical literature and critical thinking on the directions taken by research, the distinctive features and the complexity of violence against women are pointed out. Variable in terms of impact and form, violence against women is a feature not only present in widely-differing geo-cultural realities but also persistent and showing a polymorphic, transverse character related to male dominance which enables it (until now) to survive many social and legislative changes. As well as identifying the particular features and changing forms of this type of violence, quite unlike any other, the essay stresses the adaptive, endemic and persistent character of this phenomenon and highlights above all its intimate and political matrix.

How does the culture of rape emerge and/or appear in various television genres and how is it changing in new streaming video content? What factors are most influencing the changes taking place in television representations of violence against women?

This monographic issue of Im@go dedicated to Don Quixote is a reflection on a classic of modern literature, on the meanings it has embodied, the representations it has generated, the utopias or idiosyncrasies it has sustained, and in general the social use that has been made of it, from its birth to the present day. But it is also the cue for a socio-epistemological reflection on the structural and structuring role that the imaginary plays in the processes of construction of social reality and in the historical dynamics of social change, according to a perspective of analysis peculiar to this journal. It contains essays that concern the sphere of social action in general, epistemology and the processes of construction of reality (conflicts, negotiation of meanings, cultural influences, politics, public sphere etc.);- the sphere of social change (imaginaries, technological sphere, gender relations, the relationship between the digital world and the physical world etc.);- the sphere of art and creativity (literature, media, cinema, theater, dance etc.)

Don Quixote, in addition to being a literary masterpiece, is also an inexhaustible epistemic reservoir that we need to draw on in order to understand what the relationship between imaginary and reality is made of and the peculiar way it is articulated in different eras, not only in Modernity. In this essay - from the perspective of Social Theory and the Social Change analysis - I will try to highlight how Cervantes' novel anticipates by many centuries what will be the most important epistemological (and aesthetic) acquisitions of the 20th century. Don Quixote is, from this point of view, a poetic treatise on the epistemology of complexity that reveals, in its folds, the mechanisms of functioning of complex systems and the paradoxes that are produced in them. After mentioning what makes this work unique in the cultural landscape of any age, I will therefore dwell on its great epistemic legacy. In addition to having made it possible to highlight the existence of multiple realities (Schütz, 2008), it consists in having created an immortal mimetic device that ostensibly illustrates the co-essentiality and secret relationships between reality and the imaginary, anticipating the relational and systemic character of social reality and the risks that lurk in the inauspicious treatment of its complexity.

Violence, far from being a residual or marginal element of social life, remains one of its endogenous factors whose logic is still partly to be investigated. Its forms are various and yet recognizable. The moving geography of the global world is still dotted with this force which operates not only based on identity(religious, ethnic) and gender but also on a technical and systemic basis (economic, financial, technological and communicative).
Indeed, modernity and globalization not only did not erase "ancient" violence (for example, violence connected to borders or directed against women, children, indigenous people, infidels), but they also contributed to producing new forms of violence on a technical-procedural and global basis. In the global world, both the "renewed" forms of traditional violence and the forms "new" and unexplored violence that cross other territories than those traditionally regulated by law and politics are manifested. The aim of this essay is to identify the common content between the different forms of violence and the new faces of violence that are unfolding in the global world.

To understand the content and the historical forms of violence, it is necessary to define it in relation to the different notions that dot its path of meaning (power, domination, strenght, order, sovereignty, etc.). Moreover, this allows us to grasp its new configurations connected to the systemic upheavals that characterize the globalised world. In contemporary society violence now shows a double face, which is a combination of renewed forms of traditional violence and ‘new’ forms that derive from processes of social differentiation. These ‘new’ forms of systemic-molecular violence are linked to a biotechnological domain that opens up a new scenario to the possibility of violating freedoms and rights in the globalised world.

Taking a cue from an artistic experiment that took place in the disused prison of Montefiascone (Rome, Italy) in August 2016 - in which 12 artists plus the curator (Giorgio de Finis) remained locked up for a week with the intention of producing a work of art in a reclusive regime - Musso investigates the relationship between creativity and freedom, rules and constraint, imagination and deprivation, and ask about the role of art in contemporary life.
In a constant return of gaze between inside and outside the prison, she investigates the links between art and life, reality and fiction, deviance and normality. The half-jail of this experiment became a privileged observation point to focus also on the milder and more democratic forms of freedom reduction that we are experiencing in our society.

One of the most significant social changes brought by feminist waves of the 1960s and beyond is the way people’s attitudes towards rape have evolved. For example, marital rape, once conceived as an unchangeable sexual right of the husband, is now largely illegal in Western nations and is culturally stigmatized in the United States. Within mass media and film, one might see the evolution of ideas about marital rape in Gone with the Wind (1939) and then later in Marnie (1964), to its entirely negative portrayals today (Ross 2015).

Foreword The new phenomena of violence against women-made possible by new technologies and social media and committed and/or disseminated online (cyber harassment, revenge-porn, doxing, sextortion, etc.)-not only constitute a new piece of the already multifaceted puzzle of Violence Against Women (VAW), but also a challenge in an effort to more accurately understanding these phenomena and pursuing more effective policies and actions (legal, social and educational) in post-democratic societies. In contexts characterised by a strong reduction in the gender gap and by a high technological advancement, VAW takes on such unprecedented and original manifestations that it makes legislation and action policies inadequate to give a satisfying response. One of the reasons for this difficulty lies in the fact that the theoretical models developed by scholars (sociologists, criminologists, psychologists) often find it difficult to conceptualise 'new' phenomena within the context of hypothetically solving 'old' problems (such as VAW) which are believed to be in the process of being solved in post-traditional societies. This contribution aims to offer a concise analysis of online VAW, including the one perpetrated against girls through new forms of technology-based violence , with a view to singling out the elements of continuity and discontinuity with traditional forms, in an attempt to understand the phenomenology and its fallout on socialisation and on education.
