This chapter presents the preliminary results of a study on the history of linguistics in Italy. Our purpose is to trace the evolution of the discipline analysing, by means of quantitative methods, the changes in its terminology. To achieve that, we examined the oldest Italian linguistics journal, the Archivio Glottologico Italiano, started in 1873 and still published today.

Elena Ferrante is the pen name of a writer highly successful on the international stage, whose real identity has been kept secret by her publishers, E/O, for more than 25 years. For some time now, her fame and mystery have combined to attract the attention of readers, fans, critics, journalists, and academics all over the world, and various hypotheses have already been advanced as to who the hand behind this nom de plume might be. Elena Ferrante’s work in general, and the question of her anonymity in particular, have been the object of only a limited number of scientific publications, however. Starting from a corpus of 150 novels by 40 different authors selected specifically for this research project, and from the results of previous qualitative and quantitative studies, this contribution contextualizes Elena Ferrante’s work on the panorama of contemporary Italian literature. It also provides further elements to support the hypothesis that, based on what we know now, Domenico Starnone is the writer with the greatest affinity in style and content with the novels signed by Elena Ferrante. The present article also explains why our Italian research group shared our data and preliminary results with international experts on textual data analysis, authorship attribution, and profiling, who worked independently on the same data and added their own contribution to this case study.

The aim of authorship attribution methods is to exploit observable textual features to identify the distinctive traits of an author’s writing style. In quantitative approaches, the problem of authorship attribution is often tackled in terms of the search for a reliable procedure to measure the similarity between texts and for a consistent text clustering method. Among several proposals available in the scientific literature, this new study explores a large corpus of contemporary Italian novels and focusses on a famous case of disputed authorship. The object of the research is Elena Ferrante's work, with a specific focus on the presumed similarity with other novels written by Italian authors from Naples and its surroundings. Although we expected that the authors' geographical origin should play a role in terms of topic selection and linguistic features, results show that regional traits are not particularly relevant: of all the 10 candidates taken into consideration, the only author who can be considered “textually close” to Elena Ferrante is Domenico Starnone

The aim of this study is to analyse and evaluate the knowledge concerning risk communication acquired by veterinarians during a national training course. The study analyses 694 press releases written during the training course. Textual variables and indexes were considered to identify the linguistic structures used by veterinarians. At first, the analysis of press releases focused on the descriptive demographic variables, then stylistic and editorial variables were considered, and finally a lexicographic analysis was performed on the textual variables. The texts were found to have a moderate level of readability due to the use of scientific and technical terms. This study shows the need to improve training activities to develop effective risk communication, especially in terms of the language used, in order to facilitate interactions among veterinarians, mass media, and citizens.

The main aim of this study is testing the performance of Labbe’s intertextual distance in the case of a corpus of novels of the Italian literature; moreover an iterative revised version of intertextual distance is introduced. The revised procedure is based on repeated measures of the intertextual distance between pairs of text-chunks of equal size. It is intended to counterbalance the size factor and assess the similarity of texts of very different sizes. In order to test if and to what extent intertextual distance is suitable to assess authorship attribution in the case of Italian novels, we took into account the rankings obtained with reference to each novel ordering the others by means of the values of intertextual distances. Opportunities and limits of the available procedures are discussed.

Using correspondence analysis, it was possible to split the history of the journal into six chronologically compact periods and to associate each of them with a specific set of representative terms: every phase has a different lexical profile, and the changes in the vocabulary can be interpreted with the support of extratextual information. Two periods (1910–1923 and 1989–1993) are particularly important: they do not correspond to specific moments that mark the history of the journal; however, text analysis shows that they have their own strong identity and that they played an important role in the evolution of ...
