Exclusion, marginality, segregation, camps. These experiences are common in the lives of forced migrants who end up to settle in Europe. They frequently happen both in the transit and in the destination countries. And they produce a spiral of marginality hard to overcome, even after years of settlement and entitlement of formal rights connected with refugee status.
My intervention builds on a sociological research carried out in Parma (Italy) with refugees who are involved in experimental projects adopting the opposite approach, that means focusing on intense intercultural relations and immersion in the local community. “Rifugiati in famiglia” and “Tandem” focus on possible integration promoted by deep involvement in Italian social networks. In the first case, through 9 months living in a local family; in the second case, sharing the apartment with Italian university students and engaging together in voluntary activities for the community.
My intervention will present the perceptions and the experiences of the refugees, comparing their present situation with the ones they went through in the past. They have been interviewed when they were part of the projects and they had already spent several years either permanently in Italy or in different European countries. All of them have also gone through a period in a SPRAR project. Therefore in the interviews they have been invited to share their views and experiences about three different periods: 1) arrival in Italy/Europe and contexts of abandonment/segregation/encampment; 2) first settlement in Italy in a SPRAR project (living in an apartment with other refugees, relevant relations mainly with social and legal operators); 3) towards integration in Italy, experiencing an innovative project with strong relations with “common people” and their social networks and with the possibility to “give back”, to be active and engaged in the construction of the local community.
