Introduction: this paper represents a good practice at the University of Macerata (IT) in the field of soft skills recognition and validation.
Theoretical framework: soft skills is a psycho-sociological term relating to a cluster of personality traits, social abilities, communication, language, personal attitudes that characterize relationships with other people. Recognition, validation and certification of skills, especially those developed in non-formal and informal fields, is becoming a current topic for all educative institutions, including University.
Objective: to design procedures aimed to the identification, recognition and validation of soft skills through specific tasks.
Results: different tasks were tested in order to identify a set of activities useful to recognize soft skills such as observation, problem solving, communication in small group. Different degrees of competencies were also recognized and exemplified. To apply such kind of procedures at the secondary school can be important to support young students both in the field of guidance and job placement.

In training students of Infant and Primary Education programs at the University of Macerata, we designed a Workshop for Observing Children at School. The participants to the Workshop were asked to look at different videos in which children doing things at school were taped, then writing down observational written reports. From the beginning to the end of the Workshop, differences were identified in the observational texts, moving from deterministic approaches of explanation to probabilistic attitudes to comprehend children’s behaviours. Prob-abilistic approaches are as well stated as the most suitable in the current century, within the field of Developmental and Educational Psychology.

When thinking and representing environment (Mainardi Peron & Falchero, 1994; Axia, 1986; Bruner, 1996), human
mind involves perceptive and cognitive (Piaget, 1926; Piaget & Inhelder 1966a/b) as well as social and cultural
processes (Moscovici, 2005) that guide and orient human behavior and actions.
The aim of this research is to collect, analyze and describe conceptions about environment that children possess.
The sample is composed by children between 8 and 9 years old. The data were collected using both cognitive maps
(Giglioli & Collinassi, 2011) and drawings (Cannoni, 2003; Pinto, 2002, 1995; Bombi & Pinto, 1993). Only the
contemporaneous presence of physical, biological and social elements ensures an envision of environment as a
complex system (Bonnes, Bonaiuto & Lee, 2004; Bronfenbrenner, 1979). The research indicates that children, even
in primary schools, sometimes have a partial representation of environment.
This is important to know for educators and teachers, in order to support a representation of environment as a
whole, in which systematic and reciprocal interactions of different elements happen at different levels. This is one
of the emerging tasks in environmental education processes all over the world.
