The large-scale similarity of two historical buildings or their ornamental elements tends to raise the question of the relation and transfer of their master builders. Besides the decoration, if the designing and constructing principles of the structural elements represent analogies, this question is of even higher relevance. Regarding the medieval history of architecture of Hungary, the cooperation of foreign masters, the import of Western European knowledge and practice can be considered as frequently general. Royal or noble residential buildings of political partners are likely to show the architectural effects of cultural relations as well. Several structural points of the 15th-century governor palace of János Hunyadi in Hunedoara are parallel to those of the palace and tower of Philippe the Good, Duke of Burgundy in Dijon. Among these structural elements, the question of the shoulder of the vaulting (tas-de-charge) is of high importance. The personal touch of the two contemporaneous personalities cannot be proved by historical sources, that could confirm their artistic relation suggested by their residential buildings, it is quite sure, however, that the mutual direction of their political intentions could have established their sympathy.

In Hungarian documents from the 11th and 13th century we can frequently find the name “flandrenses”, which refers to the settlers coming from the Low Countries and from territories where the Low-Frankish dialect was spoken. They moved in a larger number to South-Transylvania in the middle of the 12th century, during the reign of King Géza II. In the 12th century a huge number of these settlers settled down along the southern borders, in Syrmia. The Byzantine chronicler, Nicetas Choniates, called this territory Frangokhorion: the Land of the Franks. Beside the Flemish-Low-Frankish speaking people, settlers from the neo-Latin territories came to Hungary in the Árpád Age, too. These people were called in the documents “latinus” or “gallicus”, just like the people coming from Italy or France. Above all, “latini” from Wallonia and Low-Lothringia came to Hungary. It is interesting that the neo-Latin speaking settlers settled down dispersed almost everywhere in the country, but the Flemish (German) people took root in bigger ethnical homogenic blocks in their new home. The main reason why people from the far Low Countries and their wider area came to Hungary in the Middle Ages was the existential crisis caused by extreme weather conditions in their old homeland, but the news about fertility of the ground and the wealth of natural resources also attracted them to Hungary.

The 1378 Great Western Schism gave a new direction to the Luxemburgs’ traditional pro-Valois politics. The House of Luxemburg took an abrupt turn away from the French orientation, who adhered to the obedience to the Avignon pope and were seeking for new partners. At the beginning of the 15th century, even amidst the Orléans-Armagnac vs. Burgundy antagonism, Sigismund had quite good contacts with the duke of Burgundy, probably stemming from their co-operation of the crusade of Nicopolis in 1396, the Flemish participation of which the article also investigates. Sigismund came closer to Burgundy at the Council of Constance, even though they had taken an opposite stand in important issues such as the inheritance of Brabant and Luxemburg.
The Luxemburgs themselves also had possessions in the Low Countries, because in the 14th century the dynasty, besides Luxemburg, also owned the Duchy of Brabant and Limburg. In the 15th century, partly because of the Burgundians gaining substantial territories, they partially opposed their rights, thereby bringing forth conflicts within the Low Countries. The article explores the relations of the House of Burgundy with the provinces of the Netherlands, especially the county of Flanders and the Flemish cities.
When it comes to ‘Burgundian’ contacts, it is fundamentally taken as relations with the Low Countries, particularly Flanders. The study examines the relationships that Sigismund maintained with the political figures of the Low Countries, especially the counts of Holland and Zeeland from the House of Wittelsbach, the duke of Gelderland and Juliers/Jülich asd well as the bishops of Utrecht and Lüttich/Luik.
I also wish to shed light upon contacts beyond the scene of ‘high politics’. Although we can not speak of daily relations between Hungary and the provinces of the Low Countries, there were complex contacts. Hundreds of Flemish knights took up the Cross against the Ottomans and fought at Nicopolis, the campaign of which was also funded by the citizens of Flanders. A range of cities embraced a rather independent political track when supplied the Emperor with ships. Flemish or Dutch craftsmen built a river flotilla for Sigismund. Relations can be come across in the clergy: Dutch masters of theology and medicine were active in Hungary, most peculiarly contributing to the development of the university in Óbuda.

I have been studying the career of János Perényi (†1458), Master of the Treasury, or simply Treasurer, since 2009. Besides presenting the outline of his career, I also argued before on his seal usage 1 and on the history of his family's land tenure. 2 In my present paper I will focus on his peculiarly long activity as Master of the Treasury which lasted for nearly twenty years. The duties of the Master of the Treasury were separated from the roles of the Royal Treasurer during the Angevin era and according to the historical studies before 1405 the office managed by the Master of the Treasury became the Court of Appeal for the citizens. 3 Shortly after that it seceded from the court and was operated in Buda. 4 In 1456 a Treasurer's charter was published on the basis of which the customary procedure of the Court of the Master of the Treasurer was recorded for the first time. 5 Thus, the office and the Court of the Master of the Treasurer provided judiciary forum for the citizens of those royal free cities that fell under the jurisdiction of the Treasurer. Most of these cities – besides Sopron and Buda – emerged from the largest Upper-Hungarian cities, such as Košice (Kassa, Cassovia), Bratislava (Pozsony, Pressburg), Bardejov (Brátfa, Bartfa) Prešov (Eperjes) and Trnava (Nagyszombat, Tyrnavia). Since Sopron was pledged by the Hungarian crown during the period in question, and the charters of Buda were lost, it is obvious that we can reconstruct the activities of Perényi as Treasurer based only on the materials kept in the archives of the Upper-Hungarian cities.

A középkori városok Európa-szerte szinte mindenhol mezőgazdasági mű velésre és állattartásra alkalmas földterületekkel rendelkeztek, így polgáraik s lakóik a kereskedelem, a kézműipar vagy más foglalkozások mellett agrártevé kenységet is folytattak,1 Az Elbától keletre fekvő, elsősorban a Balti-tenger partvidékén lévő Hanza városoknak különösen nagy földbirtokai és tekintélyes számú cenzusfizető falvai voltak. 1400 táján például Lübeck 17 saját faluval rendelkezett,2 Stralsundnak 12, Greifswaldnak pedig 23 faluja volt.3 A középkori Poroszországban, a német lovagrendi államban is a városok komoly földterületeket mondhattak a magukénak. Kulm (Chehnno) város 1330-1430 közötti törvényszéki iratai, a Liber memoriarum Colmensis civitatis fel jegyzései szerint a 14. század közepén például Kulm lényegében Lübeckhez ha sonló kiterjedésű földbirtok, 15 falu ura volt.

The Polish ruler, Władysław III was enthroned on 17 June, 1440 as Hungarian king. With him, the first descendent has sat on the throne of Hungary from the Jagiełło dynasty, but he was not the first as a personal union king. Polish – Hungarian rela-tions were valorized through the Middle Ages several times, thus our source material tends to be in connection. Diplomas and letters of the royal diplomacy, documents of the trades in the cities and the narrative sources all have a segment in common Namely, they all provide information to Poland’s and Hungary’s medieval history. Historians of both countries strive to explore those.
The framework of the MTA–DE "Hungary in medieval Europe" Lendület Rese-arch Group enables us to carry out basic researches. Since the revelation of the foreign source material is far from an end. The task is supervised by the Hungarian National Archives, yet results come slowly due to financial issues. With the help of the research group, in the first week of December 2014, I was able to carry out a research in the Archiwum Główne Akt Dawnych w Warszawie. I have primarily examined the archival unit of the Zbiór Dokumentów pergaminowych. It occured to me during the research that several diplomas have evaded the attention of former scholars. The reason for it could be that the concept of „Hungarica” is still hazy. Furthermore, an entire source group had been left out of being microfilmed. Those 77 letters are the group of diplomas published by Władysław I.

A középkori magyar történetírás több képviselőjét is foglalkoztatta a magyar-lengyel kapcsolatok története. A két ország kapcsolata I. Károly Róbert uralkodása alatt vált szorosabbá, fia I. Lajos perszonáluniós uralkodóként 1382-ig egyszerre irányította a két királyságot. Luxemburgi Zsigmond magyar király a Német Lovagrend és a Lengyel Királyság közötti háborúk miatt kezdetben a lengyel király ellenében foglalt állást. Német királlyá történő megválasztását követően azonban politikáját átgondolva közelített a lengyelekhez.
Az egymással háborúban álló országok képviselői a béketárgyalásokra történő utazásra menlevelet adtak a másik fél képviselőinek. Ezt követően magát a békekötést rögzítő oklevelet is az uralkodók kíséretében lévő tanácstagok is megerősítették. Ezen oklevelek tanulmányozásával a középkori béketárgyalások folyamata, technikai megvalósítása is jobban érhető, továbbá a résztvevő személyek pontos névsora, hatalmi reprezentációja, pecsétje is vizsgálható.
Munkám forrásanyagát a 2014. december első hetében az Archiwum Główne Akt Dawnych w Warszawie Archiwum Korone Krakowskie: Documenty pergaminowe levéltári anyagának kutatása során összegyűjtött oklevelekre építem, kiegészítve a szakirodalom megállapításaival, és a már kiadott forrásokkal. Kutatásomat a MTA-DE „Magyarország a középkori Európában” Lendület Kutatócsoport támogatja.

The paper investigates the roles the 14th-15th century monarchical knightly orders of Western Europe had on Hungarian noble society. In my former researches I have been examining the influences largely on the basis of iconographic evidence – representations of order devises, liveries, badges, emblems, insignia, for the most opart attached to coat-of-arms on tombs and gravestones – and formed a view of what effect they had upon the marterial culture, way of life and mentality of aristocrats. Present paper explores these possible „channels of communication” through two representations of the highly acclaimed knightly fraternity of the house of Valois, i.e. the Order of St. Michael in early 16th-century Hungary. I am also investigating the reasons why the insignia of the Valois order could be carved on the Mezőtelegd (Tileagd, present day Romania) tombstone of István Telegdi, Royal Treasurer and the stone blazon of Miklós Bacskai, bishop of Transylvania (Konca/Szászszékes/Zäckeschdorf – Cunța, present day Romania). A possible answer might lie in their diplomatic mission of 1501-1502 in the service of King Vladislas II of Hungary and Bohemia to King Louis XII of France, since Telegdi also received a coat-of-arms donation charter issued by the Valois monarch.

In the 15th century the literacy became widespread, the seal using of barons who hold statewide office is differenced, that is why the question of the authenticity is not clear. We are know, that in the name of some statewide judges, for example the Magister Judex Curie, were used more seal in the same time, like the banus who had local authority. This fact make difficult to create the itinerary of these barons. If we examine only kind of charters, which were dated by them personality not them authority, we can identify more easier the seals. The charters with lot of seals are kind of document, what the present magnates confirmed by them power and potency and not by them office.
In my former lecture I presented the index of charters with lots of seal between 1439 and 1457. Now I compare the result of this – in the light of the latest researching – and some charters which were dated in the name of some barons. The examine of the seal use of Palatinus and Magister Judex Curie will be to long for the lecture, so I will analyze seals of local authority barones. Former I executed this with John Perényi Magister Tavernicorum Magister (1438-1458), now I will examine John Rozgonyi Magister Tavernicorum Magister (1434-1437), Nicolas Újlaki (1438-1472), John Kórógyi (1440-1456) and Leslie Garai (1431-1447) Banus Machoiensis.

A sokpecsétes oklevelek feldolgozását Lővei Pál és Engel Pál kezdte meg, kiaknázva a legnagyobb pecsétanyaggal rendelkező diplomatikai forrásokban rejlő művészettörténeti és történeti lehetőségeket. Ennek a munkának eredménye lett több ilyen oklevelet feldolgozó publikáció és egy tipológiai vizsgálat a 15. századra vonatkozóan. Előadásommal mind ehhez a munkához mind a korszak archontológiájához szeretnék adalékokat szolgáltatni, és iránytűt adni a korabeli pecséthasználathoz.
Célom az, hogy az MNL OL DL-DF adatbázis adatait kiegészítve saját kutatásaim eredményeivel egy jegyzéket állítsak össze a 4-től több pecsétet hordozó oklevelekről a teljesség igényére törekedve. Vizsgálatomhoz az MNL OL DL anyagán kívül elsősorban bécsi és a szlovák levéltárak anyagát használom föl. A korszak meghatározó főpapjainak (pl.: Szécsi Dénes, Vitéz János) és báróinak (pl.: Újlaki Miklós, Pálóci László) pecsétjei mellett prezentációmban városok (pl.: Bártfa, Kassa, Eperjes) és idegen hatalmasok pecsétjeit is bemutatom majd, úgy mint például Brankovics György szerb despotáét Jan Giskra és Talafusz János cseh zsoldosvezérekét. A korszak sajátosságaként lengyel főurak és kevésbé előkelő magyar nemesek pecsétjei is lajstromba kerülnek.

The panel wishes to introduce new theoretical approaches and research methods in the study aristocracy, which could bring forward new innovative possibilities.
Aristocracy played an important, but continuously changing and in its major tendency decreasing role in the history of Hungarian political, social, economic and cultural elite. However, the higher nobility was never a uniform layer that can be easily grasped and described with a few simple characteristics. As political-social relations were changing, its place and role did alike vary, further deepening its inner, existing differentiation. It is worth highlighting a more complex and balanced investigation of the social role and activity of the aristocracy, since in recent decades it has received many superficial, unfounded and ideological statements. Therefore, the session wishes to focus the way and the spheres the aristocracy played an active public role, and in relation to this, what tasks and positions they were to be assigned upon their their intellect and learning.
The higher nobility played a decisive role in the Kingdom of Hungary and was thus allotted important tasks in the government which they duly undertook.

Our research group is planning to organize a workshop or roundtable discussion on the views of countries, peoples and religions in Medieval and Early Modern Central and East Central Europe, that is, to investigate the image of the other, the encounter with the alien. The organizers would like to give a with a broad, different approach, other than the usual national – for us, Hungarian spectacle – and view political, diplomatic, ethnic, denominational touches in a wider intercultural European context. Although we are a research group mainly exploring diplomacy, our present focus is not only of political history. We are investigating the role, view and diplomatic relations of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary in Europe and its – written, iconographic, material – sources. Through the methodology of modern contactology, however, we aim to cover broader interdisciplinary approaches, in fields ranging from literature and iconography, and even ethnography. Our perspective is pre-16 th century, based on our Hungarian-centred researches, however, we would not only focus on earlier periods, but embrace later, up to 18 th century developments as well. The budget of the workshop covers accommodation and meals for two days, as well as inland travel.
