Gian Piero Siroli
Gian Piero Siroli, physicist, working in the field of experimental Subnuclear Particle Physics, is researcher at the Physics and Astronomy Department, University of Bologna.
Most of his activity takes place at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Geneva, in the CMS Collaboration.
His recent teaching activities include an introductory course on “Computer and Network Security” for Physics students. From 1999 until 2008 he also taught a course on "Information Technologies and International Security" at the Computer Science Department, University of Pisa. On this topic, he wrote papers at national and international level and gives periodic seminars, in addition to teaching activities at the “Master in International Relations”, University of Bologna. Currently GPS is also teaching a course on "Cyber-security and cyber-war" at the Political Science Dept. at University of Bologna.
He has been "Scientific Associate" at CERN, former member of INFN (Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics) Computing Commission, representing INFN in international commissions and working groups coordinating High Energy Physics computing activities.
In 1999 he participated at the meeting on "Developments in the field of information and telecommunications in the context of international security", organized by UNIDIR at the UN Headquarters in Geneva. In 2008 he also contributed as a speaker to the follow-up conference “Information and communication technologies and international security” and more recently at a meeting on “The role of confidence building measures in assuring cyber stability” at the Palais des Nations.
He has been member of the Italian working group on Critical Information Infrastructure Protection; he also participated at various meetings on disarmament issues organized by the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, organization awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995.
GPS is currently Computer Security Officer of the CMS Collaboration at CERN.
