Carrageenan are utilized in food and non-food industry such as emulsifier, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, printing and textile formulations. The present study features on the cooking process where the parameters (concentration of potassium chloride (KCL%) solution, concentration of ethanol (C2H5OH) solution, cooking time and cooking temperature) and their ranges are identified experimentally. The effects of these parameters on carrageenan quality such as carrrageenan yield, gel viscosity and gel strength were studied. The optimization of cooking process parameters and the experimental design was conducted based on the Central Composite Design (CCD) of Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The experimental result showed that yield increases with increase of cooking time and decrease with percentage of alcohol. It showed that the maximum yield obtained from run 26 where used of 0.2%KCL, 80°C, 80% C2H5OH and time taken for cooking is 1 hour. For gel viscosity, it increases with the decrease of cooking time, cooking temperature and KCL concentration (% w/w). It is shown that the highest viscosity are on run 14 with used of 0.6%KCL, 80°C, 80% C2H5OH and time taken for cooking is 25 minutes. In contrast, gel strength increases as cooking time, cooking temperature and KCL concentration (% w/w) increases which determined from run 28 which used. The optimal conditions determined for carrageenan extraction were 80 °C and 50 minutes with 0.25% KCL and 80% Ethanol concentration from run 28 resulting in a maximum yield, higher gel strength, and high viscosity.

BACKGROUND: Phalangeal fractures are approximately 10% of all the fractures of skeletal system. Most fractures are functionally stable. Surgical treatment is necessary when fracture is displaced and reduction is not possible. This study was conducted in order to study the aetiology, features and management of the phalangeal fractures of hand.METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted in the department of Plastic Surgery, Pakistan Institute of medical Sciences, Islamabad from June 1st 2002 to July 31st 2003. Adult patients of either sex with acute injury presenting in the out-patient department and emergency department were included whereas patients below the age of 13 years and patients with amputated digits were excluded. The site and side of fracture were noted. All patients were X-rayed pre-operatively. These patients were divided into two groups. Group A comprised of those patients in whom only closed reduction was done. Group B comprised of patients in whom operative procedure was carried out. Various modalities used were percutaneous Kirschner wire fixation, open reduction and internal fixation with K-wires, screws, microplates and dental wires/ after operation, immobilization of fracture site was done for 3 4 weeks. Chi square test was used for statistical analysis of complications in both the groups.RESULTS: 51 fractures were seen in 43 men and 8 fractures in 8 females. Mean age of the patients of group A was 35.6 years as compared to 29.5 years of group B. 31% fractures were associated with soft tissue injury. Ring finger was the commonest to be involved in 36% patients. Left hand (64%) was commonly involved. Left proximal phalanx (31%) was the most frequently injured part. Intraarticular fractures were seen in 10% cases. 15 fractures were treated conservatively and some kind of operative modality was used in 44 fractures. Crush injury remained the commonest cause. In 36% patients fractures were fixed with K-wire using open reduction and internal fixation technique. In 22% patients, only percutaneous K-wire was used. In two patients, dynamic traction device was used. One case of post operative infection was noticed in group B. Whereas only one case of malunion and one case of limited joint movement and stiffness was noted in group A.CONCLUSIONS: Results of both the closed reduction and open reduction and internal fixation were equally good (p < 0.05). If there is any soft tissue injury, it is advisable to use open reduction and internal fixation technique.

We report on a study in which twelve different paradigms were used to implement agents acting in an environment which borrows elements from artificial life and multi-player strategy games. In choosing the paradigms we strived to maintain a balance between high level, logic based approaches and low level, physics oriented models; between imperative programming, declarative approaches and “learning from basics”; between anthropomorphic or biologically inspired models on one hand and pragmatic, performance oriented approaches on the other. We have found that the choice of the paradigm determines the software development process and requires a different set of skills from the developers. In terms of raw performance, we found that the best performing paradigms were those which (a) allowed the knowledge of human experts to be explicitly transferred to the agent and (b) allowed the integration of well-known, high performance algorithms. We have found that maintaining a commitment to the ch...

The objective of this work is to prepare Molybdenum thin films to be used as efficient back contact materials and utilize characterization techniques for the investigation of the growth as well the physical properties of Mo thin films deposited through DC-plasma magnetron sputtering on soda lime glass substrate. The effects of process parameters, such as Ar pressure, deposition power and substrate temperature, on the properties of the deposited films have been studied. These process parameters were optimized to get high conductivity Mo thin films to be used in CIGS based thin films solar cells as a back contact.

In today's computing environments every user interacts with several dozens of highly heterogeneous devices. These devices are frequently arranged in contexts; in any given context the user is interacting with a specific set of devices. Context oriented data staging is the problem of delivering up-to-date data to the devices of the current context, following the movement of the user between the contexts. Additional constraints are provided by factors such as the existence of intermediary contexts with low resource availability, the heterogeneous and potentially intermittent network connections of the devices, and the users preference for certain applications. We present a mathematical model of context based data staging by extending existing models with concepts of context, document type and preferred application. A set of hybrid algorithms, relying on heuristics and rule-based systems are proposed. We present an implementation of the algorithms, an experimental harness and typic...

The current study was designed to evaluate the urease inhibitory profile of extract and fractions of Pistacia atlantica ssp. cabulica Stocks followed by bioactivity-guided isolated compounds. The crude extract was found significantly active with urease inhibitor (95.40% at 0.2 mg/mL) with IC50 values of 32.0 ± 0.28 μg/mL. Upon fractionation, ethyl acetate fraction displayed 100% urease inhibition with IC50 values of 19.9 ± 0.51 μg/mL at 0.2 mg/mL. However, n-hexane and chloroform fractions exhibited insignificant urease inhibition. Similarly, the isolated compound, transilitin (1) and dihydro luteolin (2) demonstrated marked urease attenuation with 95 and 98% respectively, at 0.15 mg/mL. Both the isolated compounds showed marked potency with IC50 values of 8.54 ± 0.54 and 9.58 ± 2.22 μg/mL, respectively. In short, both the extract and fractions and isolated compounds showed marked urease inhibition and thus a useful natural source of urease inhibition.

In Pakistan, telecommunication tools like television, radio and mobile phone are playing important role in agriculture productivity enhancement, growth and farmers' prosperity. Mobile phone helps farmers in getting information about commodity prices in different markets. The farmers can get up-to-date information about various markets in different regions and can accordingly arrange transportation and labor services in time. The study was conducted to see the effect of timely information availability with mobile on productivity. The data was collected through well structured questionnaire by interviewing 60 farmers from district Charsadda. The data was analyzed through simple averages, correlation analysis and paired t-test. Average yield of bitter -1 gourd crop was 23569 kg acre with cell phone use of 8h per season. It is perceived that low communication cost and availability of information about wholesale market prices through SMS service and low cost calling packages will hel...

We investigate the robustness of agents implemented using nine frequently used paradigms of agent implementation. While some variation in the performance and robustness can be naturally attributed to the accidents of the implementation process and the individual skill of the developers, we found that there are also systematic differences between the individual paradigms.

ABSTRACT Software systems use several third party libraries via their available interfaces popularly known as the application programming interface (API). The runtime usage of the API in an object-oriented software system can be defined by several characteristics including the type and number of API objects created, the methods invoked on those objects, and the source code locations from where the objects were created or invoked during their lifetime. These characteristics can be used to identify the source code locations exhibiting different types of runtime behavior which can be used for program comprehension, debugging, performance monitoring and fault detection. In this paper, we define object invocation model based on above-mentioned characteristics. We also propose an implementation framework that can be used to extract key model parameters from any source code. The Java Collections API is one of the most widely used Java APIs. We demonstrate effectiveness of our proposed approach by analyzing object invocation model for Java Collection API in a large open source project.
