In the descriptions and images of veintena festivals that have come down to the present, although Huixtotin priests are involved in rites addressed to deities associated with water, such as the Salt Goddess Huixtocihuatl or the Rain God Tlaloc and his helpers the Tlaloque, they also participate in rites that imply ties to maize goddesses such as Chicomecoatl and Xilonen. However, the latter had their own priests, respectively known as the Chichicomecoa and the “women who belonged to Xilonen,” which raises the question: what were the roles and the symbolism of the Huixtotin priests in rites dedicated to these goddesses? This query, a starting point and guiding thread throughout the present discussion, leads to a reconsideration of the Mexica priestly organization and how the veintena festivals took place in light of the indigenous thought system and its categories. Through this line of inquiry, it will also be possible to demonstrate the interest in as well as the need for a global study of the veintena cycle and the continuities between the different fiestas.
