Ancient Mexico

This chapter explores the concept of portraiture in West Mexican ceramic effigies, particularly
Lagunillas Style E figures (Figures 1 and 2). In scholarship on ancient West Mexican
figures, those of the Lagunillas style, along with other West Mexican ceramic styles,
have been casually described as portraits. Despite this claim, scholars have yet to make a
compelling argument affirming that West Mexican ceramic effigies do indeed represent
a form of portraiture. This chapter will do just that, arguing that Lagunillas Style E figures
represent a highly stylized form of portraiture that relies on the depiction of key features,
especially adornment, in order to communicate the identity of the subject.

Mención honorífica Premios INAH 2023 ¿Quiénes eran los sacerdotes prehispánicos y cómo participaron en las fiestas? Esta investigación tiene la ambición de remediar ambas omisiones en la historiografía sobre la religión náhuatl y las fiestas de las veintenas para ofrecer un texto donde se aborde, aunque sin agotar el tema, la historia e identidad de estos ritualistas y con ello explicar su trabajo, rol o participación en las ceremonias del ciclo festivo anual.

Este artículo propone un acercamiento a las funciones desempeñadas por enanos y jorobados en la sociedad mexica y, en particular, en la vida palaciega del soberano. En primer lugar, el trabajo pretende estudiar estos personajes a través de sus papeles cotidianos, como emisarios y confidentes del tlatoani. Sucesivamente, el estudio se centrará en las actividades de entretenimiento puestas en escena por estos individuos, mismas que abarcaban desde la música y danza hasta la acrobacia. Otro tema que se analizará será el sacrificio de enanos y jorobados para acompañar al soberano difunto en el más allá y en caso de sequía o eclipse solar. A través de la información rastreada en las fuentes documentales del siglo XVI, el artículo proporciona nuevas pistas interpretativas para comprender la importancia de estos personajes en la sociedad nahua prehispánica.

Religion -- and the symbolic representations in art, dance, ceremonies, and social institutions -- acted as a "compulsive force" which held a Mayan polity together.  Specifically, the Mayan elite promulgated "a state religion in which the political leaders were the intermediaries between gods and men."  Speaking for the gods, as their agents on earth, would inevitably provide a rationale for the elite exercising power over the commoners.

La adquisición y control de insumos de oro por los mexicas fue resultado y condicionante ala vez de la consolidación de Mexico-Tenochtitlan como potencia política y económica.Sustentado en un minucioso estudio de crónicas e inventarios coloniales, Los Señores delOro analiza la manera en que la expansión militar de los mexicas impactó la fabricación,distribución y consumo de objetos de y con oro en Mesoamérica. La obra examina, en suprimera parte, las actividades de extracción  y procesamiento del mineral, presentándolocomo materia prima de productos suntuarios. Describe después las redes de circulación e intercambio de estos productos, y su vínculo con la estructura de dominación erigida entorno a Mexico-Tenochtitlan. Concluye con una revisión del lugar del oro y los objetos de ycon oro en la cosmovisión y la medicina, y de los usos de estos últimos en los rituales detransición política, relacionándolos con ideologías y prácticas que enaltecían la posiciónpreeminente y el prestigio de los señores mexicas, y favorecían la cohesión y la lealtad desus súbditos y aliados. El libro sostiene que el oro y sus productos derivados movilizaronmecanismos económicos, políticos y sociales que reafirmaron la hegemonía de Mexico-Tenochtitlan en el periodo inmediatamente anterior a la conquista española.

D escribir los colores de un objeto parece tarea fácil..., hasta que uno la emprende: si se quiere ir más allá de la lista de los colores más básicos o si se quiere dar cuenta de matices y degradados, se necesita de una idea más o menos clara de lo que es un color, de un sistema para medir diferencias de tono y de una capacidad fina para discriminarlos. Por supuesto, la tarea se complica más cuando uno se enfrenta a una gran cantidad de ellos, y éstos presentan variaciones, sean radicales o sutiles, de colores y matices. Se impone, entonces, la tarea de clasificar, comparar y nombrar can-tidades a priori indeterminadas de colores, de reconocer contrastes y de ordenarlos en patrones cromáticos. En arqueología, el estudio de los objetos cerámicos ha sido un recurso frecuente para la comprensión de sus peculiaridades, de su origen, datación, localización y distribución, de su dependencia con respecto de las técnicas de manufactura, de su utilidad y las funcio-nes para las que aparentemente fueron diseñados. Esa plétora de información se ha puesto al servicio de la identificación y caracterización de pueblos, tradiciones y culturas. Obviamente, dentro de esta ingente tarea se encuentra la de identificar objetos por sus colores, reconocer paletas y patrones cromáticos, descifrar sus significados y simbolismos... El presente trabajo brinda un estudio descriptivo y comparativo del cromatismo de dos muestras de ce-rámica del Epiclásico, obtenidas en el cerro del Hui-zachtécatl, en la Ciudad de México. 1 Busca caracteri-zar, lo más finamente posible, los colores presentes, identificar sus variaciones y reconocer sus diferencias cromáticas que permitan la identificación y eventual periodización de los tepalcates. El objetivo central es proponer una clasificación de la muestra basada en el color. De manera paralela, el estudio brinda los prin-cipios para un análisis semiótico del color aplicable a los estudios arqueológicos en general y no únicamente a la alfarería. Abstract: In archaeology the analysis of ceramic pieces is a resource that provides information about its origin, dating, location and distribution, manufacturing techniques, functions, etc., and helps in the study of peoples, traditions, and cultures. One of the tasks is to classify objects by recognizing their palettes and chromatic patterns, meanings and symbolism. The present descriptive and comparative study reviews two ceramic samples from the Epiclassic period from the hill of Huizachtepetl, Mexico City, by exploring the colors and chromatic differences that help to identify them and, later, to determine their periodization. The aim is to propose a classification of samples based on color. The study also proposes the principles for a semiotic color analysis applicable to archaeological studies in general.

An intense interaction necessarily takes place between the individuals of any given society and the animals that share the same habitat, a relation that goes beyond the limits of biological depredation and that has changed according to the needs and the greed of humankind throughout history. The first type of interaction between humans and fauna was not a religious one but rather something more prosaic: survival. Nevertheless, the animals not only help to satisfy the stomach but also to provide answers to many of society's questions and needs. With them and because of them people learned about animals' natural history, their habitats, their marvels and their times. Animals taught humans how to behave, how to approach them and what was needed in order to hunt them. The displacement of certain fauna provoked the mobility of societies and the acquisition of a way of life that would be taken as a symbol of courage, anger, boldness, survival and power. Societies of ancient times had learned how to find food and what was good to hunt or to eat by observing the animals. This information was gathered, codified and transmitted from generation to generation through rituals, verbal communication (histories), and images (drawings, paintings, carving, sculpture, etc.). Animals participated actively in all kind of narratives and showed features in common with society's deities and other cosmic forces, enhancing their stories and giving them ethical and moral values to follow. In the stories animals were heroes, saviors, teachers, mediums, alter egos and victims. They established different levels of complexity because of the intermediary position they played between the sacred world and humankind. Animals could be found at any cosmic level and in any direction, some more versatile than others in the sacred histories and also in everyday activities. The evidence of this can be observed in the wide variety of cultural expressions and actions in what has been called a total vision of the world: a cosmovision. Sacred histories, components of this cosmovision, are as old as humankind and have helped to explain the natural world, its relation with societies and the order of the universe. But how was this perception of the animal in the eyes of the Native American Indians? How much did they differ from the XVI century conquerors that gave accounts of the fauna found in the New World? The main objective of this dissertation is to explore the functions played by animals in the mentality of Mesoamerican societies, seeking to provide the elements or factors that may help us to understand the intricate interaction human-nature. Social development and religion created differences in the relation between societies and the natural world, where hunters and gatherers considered animals as something closely related, while agricultural-urban societies began a process of separation that led them to see non-domesticated animals as something distant. These differences in conceptions raised a new set of questions that give direction to this investigation and that intends to cope with: a) how did Mesoamerican peoples perceive animals? b) what kind of factors (natural and cultural) affected the symbolic values they attributed to the animals? c) which features were conserved by agricultural societies from their hunting ancestors or neighboring hunter communities? d) what was the general perception of the natural world of the first European settlers when they arrived in the New World? SUMMARY 404 I have taken the Mexica as a case study, examining different sources the use and functions of animals in their precolonial society. Last to enter into the scenario of Mesoamerica's history, the Mexica shared a common cultural tradition with all the societies of this superarea. At the same time they were also the main group that provided the information that was recorded in many of the early Spanish written sources, documents considered essential for this study. But, the history of the Mexica is complex and fragmented as it was severely affected by the sword and the cross of the conquerors. This makes it even more necessary to use other disciplines and techniques (anthropology, ethnography, history, biology, iconography, etc.) to provide the elements to discuss and back up the main argument. The information gathered and presented in the text allows the relation that the Mexica had with the fauna to be determined and compared to that of hunter-gatherer societies. This makes it possible to note the process of change that the Mexica suffered in relation to the Chichimecs. The fusion of the natural and the cultural world in the perception of hunter-gatherers is slightly different to that of the Mexica as a state society, where a process of separation was starting, but still quite different to the one present in the mind of the Europeans. Information about the Mexica's behavior towards the animals that shared the natural areas they controlled is likewise presented here. This information has been used to point out the perception this society had, as well as the others that share the cultural tradition, and allowed to infer a wide range of values contributing to the detailed and comprehensive knowledge of the species and their environment. The ways in which these ideas, values, and beliefs were incorporated within the socio-cultural sphere are examined, but above all, this investigation emphasizes the intensity in which the seemingly external elements of the natural world merge with culture. The vision of the cosmos is an element of interaction between religious thought and the physical world in which the Mexica lived. It is important to note that ethnographical data are used to support some of the arguments presented in order to understand prehispanic societies, as I (as well as others) consider that contemporary indigenous beliefs are derived from a common ancient religion. Some ideas still haunting the literature, such as the qualification of the precolonial world as cannibal, ecologist or idyllic, are refuted; the data simply do not support such theses. This research has been structured and presented in the following way.
