Literacy is the gateway to the knowledge and skills necessary for students to build their character. According to the Comprehensive Dictionary of the Indonesian Language (KBBI) and the Cambridge Dictionary, literacy simply means the ability to read and write. UNESCO also defines a literate person as a person who can understand, read, and write short simple statements in his/her everyday life. The development of a country cannot be separated from the literacy level of its citizens. Unfortunately, studies reported that literacy rate in Indonesia is still very low. The 2015 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey indicated that Indonesia ranked 64th (or 10th lowest) out of 72 countries in terms of children literacy (Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan, 2019). Even UNESCO stated that only one out of 1,000 Indonesians is literate (Ramadhani and Yuwinanto, 2020) This condition has raised high concern. Today literacy is no longer only about reading and writing skills. Its range of meaning continues to grow, and now it is commonly associated with the terms 'knowledge' and 'skills' in various fields of life. For example, financial literacy refers to the set of knowledge and skills that allows an individual to manage and make effective decisions regarding all of their financial issues. In the context of nutrition, financial literacy at the household level is very important. Financial literacy means the ability of a household to make financial decisions, which manifests in an ability to budget basic family expenses (especially those for food) or manage family incomes for savings purposes. The research conducted by Carman and Zamarro (2016) stated that household food insecurity is not only caused by insufficient income but also due to a lack of financial literacy. Households that lack knowledge about basic financial skills such as income management are more likely to experience food insecurity. Conversely, households that have good financial literacy are more likely to be able to manage savings that can protect them from food insecurity (Carman and Zamarro, 2016).

Deforestation does not only cause conficts among indigenous peoples and the government, but also cause viola on of indigenous women’s right. It affects many aspects of life such as increasing workload, violence against women, both physically and psychologically, food insecurity at household, as well as malnutrion among children as the real manifestation. We could predict the future of indigenous peoples from the state of indigenous women today. The government must take actions to solve the forest conflict by considering the existence of indigenous peoples, particularly indigenous women and involving them in decision-making process.

ABSTRACT Stunting is a major nutritional problem among children in Indonesia, and infant prelacteal feeding is one of the risk factors. Based on the 2012 IDHS report, as many as 60.3% of babies received prelacteal food. Beliefs, traditions, customs, and culture in an indigenous community are factors that influence the prelacteal feeding practice. This study aimed to explore information about the prelacteal feeding of the Kaluppini indigenous people. With a qualitative approach, 67 mothers were involved as informants. Data was collected in the form of in-depth interviews and FGDs which were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data analysis was carried out starting from the data coding process, categorizing, until it came up with themes. This research was conducted in January-May 2018 in the Kaluppini indigenous people located in Enrekang Regency, South Sulawesi. From this research, it was found that the prelacteal feeding practice was still widely practiced. Traditional birth attendants and their strong traditions are one of the factors for many mothers who provide this prelacteal practice. Most of the mothers provided plain water, coconut water, starch water, honey, and coffee as prelacteal food to their babies in the first three days. The Kaluppini indigenous people believed that giving honey can strengthen the baby's immune system and make them stay healthy until adulthood. Prelacteal feeding practice is a challenge to increase the exclusive breastfeeding coverage in an effort to prevent stunting Therefore, innovative approaches in conducting counseling on breastfeeding and proper feeding practice are needed by still paying attention to local wisdom that exists in indigenous peoples.

This study aims to determine the food service system carried out by culinary entrepreneurs during the Covid-19 pandemic and in the era of new normal in Makassar City. With a qualitative approach, 33 informants were selected purposively to be involved in this study which was distributed into 17 in-depth interviews and 3 FGDs. Data analysis was carried out in three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion or verification. This research found that culinary entrepreneurs applied health standards in their restaurants by providing handwashing facilities, barrier plastic, keeping tables/chairs apart, and requiring consumers to wear masks. Food processing requires food processors to use disposable plastic gloves and masks as well as tighter food packaging. It is concluded that culinary entrepreneurs have implemented safety and health standards in the food service system both in food processing and food packaging. It is highly recommended that culinary entrepreneurs perform routine cleaning and disinfecting at their restaurants so that efforts to prevent Covid-19 can be maximized, especially in the culinary business sector. Introduction: Food insecurity remains a global challenge, especially among vulnerable indigenous populations. Coping strategies to maintain food security among indigenous groups can be unique and complex, being influenced by cultures. This study aimed to explore the coping strategies employed by food secure and food insecure households in times of food insufficiency, in the Kaluppini indigenous population of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Methods: The study recruited mothers of children aged below 5 years, who agreed to participate in the study’s focus group discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews. All information was recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed. Results: A total of 61 mothers participated in 22 in-depth interviews and six FGDs. Five coping strategies were used by the Kaluppini people i.e. additional income generation, dietary alteration, access to alternative food sources, access to alternative cash sources, and, traditional ways of coping. Both food insecure and secure households reported making dietary changes, such as reducing consumption or substituting foods, borrowing food or money, and practising traditional coping strategies, such as food sharing after performing rituals. In order to generate income, food insecure households reported seeking additional work in the neighbourhood areas, while food secure households migrated in search of work to the other islands or other countries. Conclusion: Food insecure and food secure households changed their diets, borrowed food or money from relatives and relied on traditional coping mechanisms such as food sharing. It is suggested that food insecure Kaluppini households be encouraged to grow essential foods in their gardens to enhance food security.
