During a football match, the game is played for about 90 minutes, and it is  during  this  time  that  the  game is  constructed  as  a  critical,  aesthetic,  historical object,  acquiring  new  rhythms  and  tensions,  creating  twists  and  turns,  reshaping hierarchies,  and  thus  revealing  itself  to  be  an  intensely  ephemeral  and  dynamic experience. When the referee blows the final whistle, the game is over, the players go  to  the  changing  rooms,  the  final  score  is  known,  but  the  game  remains  in construction as an interpretive object, as it continues to be debated and contested by both  ordinary  peopleand  soccer  analysts, undergoingevery  possiblere-signification. Notes on Translation, Alterity, and Relationality: From the Regimes of Indistinction to the Disclosure of Relation. In: David M. Spitzer, Paulo Oliveira (Org.). Translation is often associated with the idea of connecting, mediating, approaching. However, even if the relational experience of translation is so evidently marked by the semantic strength of these and other conjunctive figures, a relational reason restricted to the force of this evidence fails to take into account the equally constitutive character of the disjunctive dimension of any relation. In other words: although translation seems to operate as a conjunctive force in a space between languages, it does not do so only by bridging different things in space, but also as a kind of spacing force that is able to produce a certain rupture with regimes of indistinction, allowing perceptions of an I and an other to emerge and to transform one another. Starting from the epistemological rupture promoted by the work of Rosemary Arrojo and other contemporary thinkers, this set of numbered notes aim at discussing translation beyond its conjunctive dimension, with special attention to the disjunctive forces that also constitute it as a relational poiesis.

Resumo: Este ensaio tem por objetivo discutir os diferentes sentidos da noção de traduzir como remontar, explorando as acepções desse verbo em português, seja no sentido da (re)montagem (em sua acepção como técnica cinematográfica), seja no sentido da referência a uma origem. À luz dessa reflexão preliminar, este ensaio faz uma breve reflexão sobre as relações entre tradução e antologia, encerrando-se com uma leitura crítica do projeto de tradução da poesia de Bertolt Brecht, publicada por André Vallias em 2019.

It is not uncommon to assume nowadays that translations are always dated and, therefore, they have a kind of shelf life. In this sense, while original works perpetuate themselves in a form of perennial vitality, manifested in what Walter Benjamin (2011) called its Fortleben, translations of these works manifest the frailty of its provisional and ephemeral condition: it is from this perspective that we will say that translations simply grow old. However, in saying that, aren’t we assuming already that translations too are inscribed in time, and thus that they constitute in themselves a unique and singular form of life? In other words, would not their aging be a sign of the singularity of their form of life, of a form of life like works in themselves? Based on the assumption that, beyond representing a form of life for original works, translations also constitute in themselves a singular form of life (CARDOZO, 2017), this paper aims at discussing some of these issues, in order to rethink the possible meanings of the idea of aging of translations.

Starting from the point of view that a contemporary thought on translation cannot ignore a consequent integration of the contemporary notions of subjectivity and language – recognizing the translator as a subject, the translation practice as a transformative and critical activity, and its product, the translated text, as a singular object –, one cannot ignore the idea that, beyond representing a form of life and death to the original text, the translated text also constitutes in itself a singular form of life and death. Therefore, it is necessary to take into consideration that, notwithstanding the temporality that the translated text represents to other texts (such as the original), it also establishes a temporality of its own: a time of the translation. And as readers and critics, it is also necessary to consider the consequences of this time dimensioning of the translation in our relationship with the translated text. This essay aims at discussing preliminarily some aspects of the issue of time of the translation, understood here as the singular form of life and death constituted by the translation.

The idea that the relation to the other happens as an immediate way to access otherness is quite widespread. In this sense, the accomplishment of the relation would be determined by the figure of the continuity (of another in us, of us in another), ensuring thus an accessibility to otherness as a totalizable identity or simply as an identity unit. Based on a broader reflection on time issues in the relation, with particular attention to the discussion of concepts such as duration and contemporaneity, this paper aims at discussing preliminarily the notions of both unity in the literary work and continuity in translation, taking into account the assumption that these notions are built up as a sort of fiction of continuity inscribed in a condition of discontinuity.

In the last decade, some Brazilian publishers invested in new translations of classics of foreign literature, especially those who have long been circulating in Portuguese, but in so called indirect translations. The most recent cases of new translations of Russian and German literature are exemplary in this sense. The numbers are significant and we can recognize there a new trend, but cum grano salis. Statistics also show that these numbers are not as expressive as to allow a generalization of the trend as a rule for all the Brazilian publishing field, even if restricted to the literary market. For translation studies, however, this trend gives new life to the discussion on the various issues involved in this kind of translation. Em Pour une critique des traductions (1995), obra póstuma de Antoine Berman e uma das obras mais importantes sobre a crítica de tradução literária no século XX, o autor, partindo de uma concepção de tradução como atividade de ordem crítica, coloca-nos diante da tarefa de aprender a ler as traduções como tal. Para dar conta dessa tarefa, seria preciso, por sua vez, reinventar o(s) modo(s) de ler as traduções. Este trabalho tem por objetivo repensar os termos dessa leitura Bermaniana da tradução e discutir suas implicações para a crítica e para uma história da tradução literária.

Assuming a general understanding of translation as poiesis of relation, as a discursive practice that builds up a whole set of relations, translations demand a reading centered on the meaning of their differences – whereby the pointing out of difference is to be understood as one of the starting points of translation criticism, and not as an end in itself -, i.e., a reading centered on the meaning of the relations from which differentness and identity stem. Regarding the translational practice as a critical undertaking – in the terms discussed by Antoine Berman in his Pour une critique des traductions (1995), and on the basis of the understanding of literary translation and criticism in the context of the German Romanticism -, I intend to underline the critical possibilities that the notion of translation project opens up for the translation practice itself, as well as for the literary translation criticism.

The Journey to the Land without Death (1937) is the first of the three volumes of Döblin’s South-America Trilogy Amazonas. Based upon the work of ethnologists like Theodor Koch- Grünberg, whose work constitutes also an important reference for Mario de Andrade’s Macunaíma (1928), Döblin doesn’t simply translate those ethnographic notes of a “primitive” culture on the perspective of a culture that pretends to be “civilized”: he invites the reader to discover himself in this other culture apparently so “primitive”. In other words, instead of simply experiencing a “translation of the other”, Döblin invites the reader to “translate himself upon this Otherness”, finding out an Other that is unbelievably human. This paper aims at a preliminary discussion of Döblin’s Alterity equation, i.e. of the way he poses the problem of Otherness in his Trilogy. This discussion outlines the critical principles of a possible translation project of this Work to Brazilian Portuguese.

Tensioned between variations of the said and the unsaid, and between figures of light and shadow, Paul Celan's work performs a certain confrontation with the condition of silence and obscurity, breaking all at once with a certain way of making poetry and of relating to reality. In this sense, Celan's work can hardly be reduced to a kind of hermeticism, a category too vague to account for its singularity. In his work saying and silencing together articulate the tension that creates the poetic space in which the poem is inscribed. The poet himself tried to refuse the insistence of some critics on labeling his work as obscure. Despite of its fragmentary nature, the recently published manuscripts of his speech project Von der Dunkelheit des Dichterischen constitutes one of Celan’s most extensive discussions of the matter of obscurity in poetry. This paper aims at presenting the fragments of his speech project and pointing out its importance to the discussion of the notion of obscurity in Paul Celan's work.

Much is said about what a translation should do. Traditionally, such duties of translation are grounded on the assumption that translating is saying again, saying something that takes the place of another saying. From there arises a sense of responsibility that is strongly linked to the saying of the other, to the idea of another subscribed by his saying. However, the state of art of contemporary thought does not allow us to reduce the other to the limits of his sayings, since one cannot ignore the other’s irreducibility, the irreducibility of the silences beyond his sayings. In this sense, how tore think, now a days, the responsibility implied in the practical and in the ethical dimensions that ground the ontological status of the translation? On the basis of a reading of Levinas’s notion of responsibility to the other and of other reverberations specially in the work of Paul Celan, Jacques Derrida and Jean--Luc Nancy, this paper aims at pointing out some implications of Levinas’s notion of responsibility to the reading and to the criticism of translation.

In the present paper, I would like to discuss the ethical-dialogical concept that underlies the relationship between the practice and the space of literary translation criticism, in the sense of an ethical space, which can only be created on the basis of a dialogical practice. Assuming an ethical perspective of literary translation criticism, I initially point out two premises of a critical practice based on this ethical-dialogical concept. These premises will establish the ethical-dialogical bias upon which I will then proceed a brief review of manifestations of the literary translation criticism in Brazil.
