This article seeks to explore the relationships between the artistic production of Peter Nicolai Arbo and the political transformations in Scandinavia between the 19th and 20th centuries. Arbo, born in Drammen in 1831, Norway, is well known for the production of two paintings known as Åsgårdsreien, the first in 1868 and the second in 1872, both influenced by Johann Sebastian Welhaven's poem of the same name. Although is it known that the official date of Norway's Independence is 1905, it is nevertheless necessary to remember that different artists sought to culturally construct their identity as a nation already in the previous century in a project of sovereignty that rejected the influences of Denmark and Sweden. New cultural projects were built to express Norway's yearning for independence using characters from medieval literature and mythology as a way to reinforce their national identity.

Our article aims to understand the relations between the artistic production of the Norwegian painter Peter Nicolai Arbo, taking into account the mythological elements represented on the painting Åsgårdsreien, and the political moment that permeated Scandinavia between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Our argument considers that the independence of Norway acquired on the official date of 1905 was culturally constructed in the previous century, which saw, at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the handing of its territories, which previously belonged to Denmark, to Sweden, thus hampering a Norwegian sovereignty project. It is possible to observe how this cultural construction expressed the yearnings of independence of the Norwegian population that saw in arts its national identity through the characters belonging to the medieval literature or Scandinavian mythology.

The goal of our dissertation is to study how the Scandinavian writings produced a Norwegian identity of warlike ideals in a compilation of Icelandic sagas known as Heimskringla and has parts of its content focused on storytelling about a troubled time of Scandinavian monarchies rising between the 8th and 11th centuries, which is called the Viking Age. The Heimskringla, also known as “The Circle of the World” is a set of writtings based on Icelandic oral memory about the Norwegian kings and the conception of a Norwegian territory. While we investigated the relationship between the members of royalty, their companions and the Scandinavian people, we delineate the relationship between memory, identity and war. Our study points out how the Scandinavian war produces, in its storytelling, proper spaces, in socio-political relations among the participants, in the organization of its conflicts or the location of war activities, where places are transformed into essential points in these narratives. The war is both a place of identity statements and a space of practices, necessary for the strengthening of royal power.

This article aims to analyze from the Post-colonialism perspective, the disclosure of a medieval Scandinavian poem, the Hervararhvöt, in a 19th century publication, the Lieutenant-colonel James Tod’s Annals and Antiquities of Rajastan. Being member of the East India Company, James Tod wrote about the Indian past and its relationship with Scandinavian past, searching for a common origin between them.
