HIV-1 reaches the placenta through the maternal-fetal transmission from an infected uterus. This virus has cytolytic capabilities. The placenta in its maturation process has regressive or degenerative changes within certain limits, are considered normal. However, factors such as virus and antiretrovirals, can increase the proportion of these lesions. To evaluate morphological changes in placental villi of pregnant women infected with HIV-1 treated with AZT. descriptive, prospective, comparative, with non-probability sampling of observations in villi as units of analysis of the placentas from the group of patients with HIV-1 infection and zidovudine regimen and of the control group of four placentas from HIV negative patients. Both groups in the last trimester of pregnancy. H-E staining was used in 25 films from five placental regions of the study group and four from the control group, using a protocol of 6 variables identifying syncytial knots, fibrinoid changes, villous edema, stro...

The pathogenesis of Zika virus infection is not well known and the effects on the structure of the placental villi require to be investigated. Is our proposal to describe the histopathological changes that occur in the placental villi provoked by Zika virus. The pacient of 38 years old was infected during the third trimester of pregnancy a week before parturition manifesting symptoms of infection by Zika. Light and scanning electron microscopy were used. Numerous stem villi are suffering degenerative changes with collapsed vessels. A conglomerate of syncytial knots and degenerated peripheric surface can be seen. Immature intermediate villi suffers fibrinoid deposition with macrophagues together in Hoffbauer channels. Necrosis of the syncytium and stromal fibrosis were noted on the placental villi. Koylocytic cell, destroyed villi, damage in the wall of vessels and mature intermediate villi with scarcity of terminal villi were found. Bad development of the ramifications of the placenta...

A placenta obtained of patient with co-infection HPV/HIV antiretroviral therapy and serology negative for another illness was analysed with the purpose of demonstrate the effect of this infection on the structure of the placental villi. The features of patient, the diagnostic, methods used, exam of material with H&E stain and sampling was done according morphological criterion of the literature as written in a previous article. Villi with interrumped syncytium are seen communicating the stromal region with the intervillous space. A group of them are associated by fibrinoid deposition, cells of the cellular island lack of cytoplasm, severe changes are observed in stem villi, many placental ramifications are immature, zones of calcification are observed and numerous remainders of villi are noted. The presence of this viral combination has provoked a strong attack to the structure of the villi which put in danger the normal interchange of gases and nutrients in the maternal-fetal inter...

The severe acute respiratory síndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) a newly emerging zoonotic agent, has been studied by their effect on the placental villi, in patient of 29 years old who had Covid-19 at 36 weeks of pregnancy whose placenta was described with light microscopy. Deciduitis, villitis, disorganization of the stromal region of the villi, fusioned cytotrophoblasts hypertrophied, distrophic calcification, fibrinoid deposition, cellular necrosis, destroyed villi, fibrotic rest of stem villi in the intervillous space, numerous syncytial knots and extensive zones of syncytium with numerous nuclei were found. This viral attack against the villous tree can result in increased morbidity and mortality among pregnant women with the potential to adversely affect the developing fetus and neonate.

A 20-year-old woman infected with rubella virus at 19 weeks of gestation presented the clinical symptoms of rubella infection and whose placenta was obtained at 37 weeks for the observation. A light microscopical study using a standard light photomicroscope (MC63A Zeiss) was employed to detect morphological changes in the structure of the placental villi. Presence of mononuclear cells in the decidua of the basal plate showed acquired placental infection confirmed by RT-PCR. Death of stem villi appeared under fibrinoid deposition. Degenerative changes were noted in the stromal region of these villi. Clear spaces in this zone indicated tissue destruction and cellular death. Some villi were seen with inflamed syncytium and others were noted in severe edematous condition. The tree villous was severely affected by the viral activity damaging the normal interchange of gases and nutrients.

space, lack of infected erythrocytes and of mononuclear inflammatory infiltration. Presence of syncytial knots, loss of villous stromal structure, congestion ad dilatation of stromal capillars and nucleated erythocytes. Besides, degenerative changes in the trophoblast, fibrinoid or fibrin deposition surrounding the villi ad dystrophic cal- cification. These results indicate a placental dysfunction that predicts intrauterine growth retardation.

SUMMARY Objective: To assess fetal and placental weights with their parameters correlated in third trimester patients from middle-class. Method: A sample of 46 per cent from an universe of 1783 patients was taken. The correlation coefficient ( r ) was determined for the following variables: Cord length-placental weight; birth weight. Birth weight-placental weight. Placental weight-patient age, gestational age. Descriptive statistics were measured according to fetal sex and extremes parameters were showed using SAS by computer. Setting: Maracay Polyclinic; Floresta Maternity, Maracay; Aragua. Results: Correlations between studied variables were significant. High variability in birth weight, placental weight, length cord and fetal-placental index without differences statistic significant related with fetal sex. Conclusion: Direct positive relationship between cord length and placental weight or birth weight, birth weight and placental weight and this latter with patient age or gestational age.

SUMMARY To describe filiform placental villi, before described as terminal villi deficiency in the mature intermediate villi, found in ss hemoglobinopathy with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy is our proposal in this work. Fifty hematoxilin eosine slides were observed in marginal, central or intermediate regions near to basal plate and specimens were taken to their observation with the scanning
