Gas cromatography with mass spectrometry detection coupled to headspace solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was used to analyse the aroma profile of saffron (Crocus sativus L.). The influence of the saffron amount and form (intact stigmas vs. powder) on the intensity of the chromatograms was preliminarily evaluated. Moreover, the mutual effects of the sample temperature and exposition time of a polydimethylsiloxane SPME fiber was investigated by response surface methodology. Saffron samples produced in L’Aquila (Italy), Iran and Morocco, and commercial spices were analysed under application of the optimised SPME conditions and geographical classification was attempted by linear discriminant analysis applied to the relative peak areas of all the detected volatiles. The spices produced in the different geographical areas and the commercial products were discriminated with good accuracy, 91% of external samples being correctly classified using leave-one-out cross-validation. An acceptable differentiation (73% of correct predictions) was obtained by considering only the major aroma components.

INTRODUCTION  Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy complication associated with increased maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The disease presents with recent onset hypertension (after 20 weeks of gestation) and proteinuria, and can progress to multiple organ dysfunction, with worse outcomes among early onset preeclampsia (EOP) cases (< 34 weeks). The placenta is considered the root cause of PE; it represents the interface between the mother and the fetus, and acts as a macromembrane between the two circulations, due to its villous and vascular structures. Therefore, in pathological conditions, macroscopic and microscopic evaluation can provide clinically useful information that can confirm diagnosis and enlighten about outcomes and future therapeutic benefit. OBJECTIVE  To perform an integrative review of the literature on pathological placental findings associated to preeclampsia (comparing EOP and late onset preeclampsia [LOP]) and its impacts on clinical manifestation...

Blastocyst implantation and neoplastic invasion have some common properties related to tissue invasion, mediated by various cytokines. Aim To compare the expression of IL-6, STAT-3 and telomerase in material of abortions in the first trimester of pregnancy, at term placentas and in choriocarcinomas. Methods Immunohistochemical reactions were performed on formalin fixed and included in paraffin samples from 3 groups: abortions, normal at term placentas and choriocarcinomas. Western Blot and Real-Time PCR assays were performed on fresh material from BeWo cell line and in primary culture cells of normal placenta. Results Immunohistochemical reactions: IL-6 expression was moderate in the first trimester abortion samples and high in at term placentas and choriocarcinomas. STAT-3 was strongly positive in all groups. Telomerase expression was absent in normal at term placentas but was increased in BeWo cells. Conclusion IL-6 and STAT-3 are present in the invasion process of the normal plac...

To determine whether the plasma concentration of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is elevated after a common surgical procedure, and if any increase is followed by a reduction in the amount of infused crystalloid fluid in the blood. Nonrandomized study. Experimental group age-matched to control group. Operating room of a large medical research center. 10 ASA physical status I, II, and III patients, aged 51 to 94 years, scheduled for hip surgery; and 10 ASA physical status I and II volunteers, aged 53 to 71 years, comprising a control group. Patients and control subjects were given an intravenous volume load of Ringer's acetate solution (12.5 mL/kg for 30 min). The plasma concentrations of C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, interleukin-8 (inflammatory parameters used as biochemical evidence of trauma), and VEGF were measured in patients the morning after the day of the surgery. The area under the curve (AUC) for the plasma dilution was calculated in response to the intravenous fluid. VEGF concentration was tripled in the hip group (100.7 +/- 18.5 pg/L vs. 31.9 +/- 7.2 pg/L; p < 0.001) as a consequence of the trauma of surgery. The other inflammatory parameters were also significantly increased. There was no difference in AUC between the two groups during infusion, but after infusion AUC was significantly increased in the hip group versus controls (4.88 vs. 2.8; p = 0.025), suggesting persistence of the infused fluid to remain in the vasculature. AUC was not highly correlated with any of the inflammatory parameters regardless of group during or after infusion. Intravascular persistence of infused crystalloid is increased after hip surgery despite elevated VEGF levels in plasma.
