Latin America has suffered disproportionately during the COVID-19 pandemic. The human impact has been chaotically and catastrophically evident across the three countries we examine here: Colombia, Chile, and México. Those nations were already creaking under the effect of generations of neoliberal ideology: their intellectual, political, and ruling-class fractions had long-embraced its core project of redistributing income upwards and privatizing public goods, notably healthcare. In response to that raging inequality, uprisings had occurred through new citizen movements in 2019. They intensified in 2020 and 2021, as citizenship was enacted in powerful ways.

The history of US universities is both an expansion of governmentality, in the sense of research undertaken for the public weal and teaching undertaken to train the populace in self-regulation; and an expansion of commodification, as research becomes more driven by corporate needs, students are increasingly addressed as consumers of education, and paymasters and administrators accrete authority over academics.

This article addresses the circulation of Latin American film in the United States. The background to this research is our concern that activists, journalists, academics, film-makers and policy-makers who seek a diverse film sector tend to focus on production to the exclusion of distribution and exhibition. An absence of publicly available data adds to the problem. In addition to examining the wider political economy of Latin American cinema in the United States, we offer case studies of success and failure.

Through a content analysis of 532 programs screened on various national television networks in Colombia, this paper examines portrayals of women in the country’s narconovelas, fictional series derived from the telenovela genre that resonate forcefully with the public. We do so in order to gain a better understanding of their role in representing gender in Colombia. Relevant topics include: the widespread violence against women in a traditional, patriarchal country, the inefectiveness of policies targeting gender discrimination, and ideologies of machismo and Marianismo. These practices are discussed as factors that may prevent women’s social empowerment and participation in the workforce and politics of the country. Our results show that, as per Colombia’s prevailing social relations, narconovelas demonstrate a gendered power imbalance and mestizo heteronormativity via macho plots that glamorize violence against women. Women are rarely key characters in narconovelas, and when they appear, they are dependent on men, and attain status through men or their families. In addition, the genre represents continuous verbal and physical aggression against women, especially if they belong to ethnic or racial minorities.

Abstract Perhaps the most basic network in modern life is the division of labor. It certainly rates alongside family, school, and town. That inexorably leads to a discussion of how resources are allocated within this division, who exercizes power, and what happens when the network meets a seemingly natural or unnatural end. For networks that may appear extremely stable can come to abrupt or scheduled conclusions, when a company goes bankrupt or a school cohort breaks up. This article briefly examines the history of the ...

The word'intellectual'is foreign to me. I have never encountered any intellectuals. I have known people who write novels, and others who take care of illnesses; some who do economic studies and others who compose electronic music. I have encountered people who teach, people who paint, and people who do I don't know what. But intellectuals, never (Foucault 1989d: 194).

This anthology offers a collection of some of the most provocative and influential writings of film theory from the 1960s and 1970s, along with new directions from the last two decades. An introductory essay to the volume sums up developments in film theory from the beginning up through the 1980s, while introductions to specific groupings of essays summarize debates on those issues. Rather than look at film theory in terms of schools and allegiances, the editors investigate questions and problematics: What is the cinema? What is the ...

Abstract I arrived in the United States in the mid-1990s to a job at New York University. I went looking for cultural studies and links to the left, and found them via Social Text. Then I was asked to become director of graduate studies in my department (of cinema studies). Despite its name, the department had been home to some notable dissertations about radio and TV, and so in my new role I felt obliged to go looking again at domains of knowledge across the academy and the country that might relate to the interests of our dozens of ...

Neoliberalism was one of the most successful attempts in world history to reshape individuals in human history via government programs. Its achievements in this regard must be ranked close to those of Christianity, colonialism, Islam, and Marxism. The grand contradiction of neoliberalism was its passion for intervention in the name of non‐intervention – pleading for investments in human capital at the same time as deriding social engineering, calling for the generation of more and more markets by the state while insisting on fewer and fewer democratic controls, ...

Abstract In a University dominated, as are most, by the notion of science as the heart of knowledge, I find NYU's position on unions and collegiality not only politically dubious, but analytically spurious. Let's leave to one side ideological issues and focus on methodology and truth-claims. How does anybody know that there is collegiality at NYU? How would they know if it were absent?

HPhis paper is in some sense a reaction to a problem in curriculum design. JL That problem arose because I was appointed to a job in an American cinema studies department which wanted me to introduce a graduate seminar in" screen cultural studies". As I began developing the course, it became fairly clear that whilst various aspects of literary and television studies were reforming themselves under the sign of cultural studies in ways that were recognisably similar to Australian and British cultural studies, the area of film was ...
