The exceptional bone artefact assemblage from the Neolithic site of Tell Halula (Syria)—PPNB, Pre-Halaf, and Halaf periods—comprises 670 items. The abundant data provided by the faunal remains analysis and the stratigraphic distribution of the bone items, as well as their very good conservation and diversity, permit a holistic analysis of raw material and morphologies. The ultimate goal of this research is the understanding of cultural and social dynamics that occur at Tell Halula, through evolution, cultural, and functional representations of the bone objects. The rich PPNB assemblage includes cutting tools, pointed tools, needles, tubular items and hooks: a typical equipment of the Northern Levant overall but also of the Southern Levant. With Pre-Halaf and Halaf objects, this study fills an important documentary gap in the Near East.

The study of Near Eastern Neolithic societies has special significance in understanding the transformation of hunter-gatherer societies to agricultural communities. Among the variables which have been studied, technological change has been a key factor in defining the different stages of transformation of the hard animal materials industry. The ongoing analysis of this industry with samples from the site of Tell Halula in Syria is providing good results in this area.
In this paper we analyse a specific tool found at Tell Halula, namely a long bevel with a blunt or sharp active part used for distal-lateral friction. A considerable number of these elements have been collected (n=83), allowing for a detailed analysis. We performed typological, technological and experimental studies to understand the transformation of these objects and reconstruct all the stages of the production cycle.

Abstract: In this paper we present the preliminary results of the typological and technological analysis of Neolithic bone tools from the site of Kamiltepe in the Qarasu Valley. We would like to measure the originality of Kamiltepe assemblage compared with others existing around. This the first step of a wider analysis of Near Eastern and Asian assemblages, in the project to analyse bone objects, on the basis of experimentation and technical and functional traces in order to study technology and use-wear, from the choice of the raw material to the abandonment of the final objects.
