Penguins to participate in Buffalo Prospects Challenge

The Penguins selected forward Brayden Yager in the first round (No. 14 overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will once again participate in the Prospects Challenge hosted by the Buffalo Sabres in September at the LECOM Harborcenter.

This event is a series of scrimmages between prospects from six NHL teams. In addition to the Penguins and Sabres, the Boston Bruins, Columbus Blue Jackets, New Jersey Devils and Ottawa Senators will participate.

A schedule for the event was released on Tuesday. The Penguins’ games are:

Sept. 13 – vs. Bruins, noon

Sept. 14 – vs. Senators, noon

Sept. 16 – vs. Sabres, 5 p.m.

A total of 25 players are scheduled to suit up for the Penguins. Their roster includes:

Forwards - Jack Beck, Tristan Broz, Atley Calvert, Justin Cloutier, Mathieu De St. Phalle, Cooper Foster, Avery Hayes, Tanner Howe, Beau Jelsma, Gabe Klassen, Ville Koivunen, Logan Pietila, Vasily Ponomarev, Brayden Yager

Defensemen - Isaac Belliveau, Scooter Brickley, Harrison Brunicke, Caeden Carlisle, Finn Harding, Donovan McCoy, Owen Pickering, Emil Pieniniemi

Goaltender - Taylor Gauthier, Sergei Murashov, Charlie Schenkel

• Belliveau, Broz, Brunicke, Gauthier, Howe, Koivunen, Murashov, Pickering, Pieniniemi, Ponomarev and Yager are all signed to NHL contracts.

• Foster and Harding are unsigned draft selections.

• Beck, Brickley, Calvert, De St. Phalle, Hayes, Jelsma, Klassen and Pietila have been signed to American Hockey League contracts with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

• Carlisle, Cloutier and Schenkel are non-roster invitees.

This will be the third consecutive year the Penguins have been part of this event.
