Local organization awards two $10,000 community service scholarships
Passavant Memorial Homes Foundation (PMHF) announced the recipients of its 2024 Community Service Scholarship. The scholarship was created to honor the memory of Jamie Ellenberger, an individual served by Passavant Memorial Homes Family of Services (PMHFOS) who was an active member in the community. The principle of community is central to PMHFOS's mission, to empower individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, and behavioral health needs to live successfully in the community. Typically, PMHF awards one $10,000 scholarship to a student in the region, however, PMHF awarded two $10,000 scholarships to Gracie Mae Miller of Erie County and Madelyn Sheffel of Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School in Beaver County. Since 2020, Miller has served as a teacher's aide in the Life Skills classoroom in Millcreek Township School District and volunteers for a number of local organizations supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism. She is attending Duquesne University and hopes to become a Life Skills teacher. Sheffel became very involved in cancer initiatives after her close family members were diagnosed with cancer. She volunteers for numerous local non-profits including the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Special Olympics of Beaver County, Ronald McDonald House Charities, and the Mario Lemieux Foundation. She is attending Slippery Rock University to become a public school educator and coach. This year, PMHF received 90 applications across 14 counties in western Pennsylvania.
