Appearing already during the controversies on planning following the 1929 crack, first of all in France, the concept of “Neocapitalism” is strictly connected to “Fordism” in the 1950s and 1960s debate: it can epitomize tensions, expectations and fears of business leaders and industrialists, social scientists, leaders and intellectuals of the Unions and of the Left parties. Despite the disagreement between these figures, the debate may be regarded as both general and transnational, having its starting point in the United States and involving Italy and France. Technological changes in the mass production industries, the shaping of mass consumption and welfare, the State’s influence over investments and the whole national economy are among the issues that were discussed within the framework of Neocapitalism. The main subject of contention was whether such changes implied the overcoming of the fundamental contradictions of capitalism or, on the contrary, a radicalization and reconfiguration of the conflict between workers and capital. Last but not least, the mission (and the self-portrait) of the Left and the Labour movement depended on the answers given to these questions.

A «memorable alliance», in Max Weber’s words, quoted by Giovanni Arrighi, was established in the latter half of the xv century between the rising states and the sought-after and privileged capitalist powers: such an alliance was at the core of the development, in time and space, of the expansion and geometric progression capitalist world-economy. In Arrighi’s theory (now remembered mostly because it announced the decline of capitalist West and it detected its symptom in the prominence of finance), war plays a central role, which evolves and changes from the early modern age to the early xxi century. The history of the us cycle of accumulation – empire of production and, later, of finance – is marked by war: World Wars, Cold War, Reagan’s «military Keynesianism», up to Bush and Powell’s project for a «New American Century». The object of the essay is the role fulfilled by war in Giovanni Arrighi’s The Long Twentieth Century (1994) and Adam Smith in Beijing (2007).

Since the birth of the European labour movement, the international dimension has been crucial to the definition of the political and economic outlook of left-wing organizations. To the tendency of capitalism to extend its influence and field of action beyond state borders, socialist theorists and leaders responded with the prospect of an international alliance of workers. Throughout the 20 th century and up to these days, the Left's perspective on these problems has constantly evolved. The international organization of politics, society and the economy has represented a key variable in the ideological developments of left-wing parties and movements, whether in government or in opposition, in phases of development or crisis, in times of peace or war. It influenced their splits as well as their search for alliances, partnerships or models across national borders. This seminar proposes to explore the history of the socialist, social-democratic and communist political families by looking at their international and transnational relations. Combining different focuses and approaches, the seminar will try to analyse political history in a larger international perspective, and to emphasize the importance of international and transnational relations in shaping national and regional political cultures. This framework can help us understand crucial aspects of the history of socialism and communism, and clarify present-day political developments. In spite of diverging attitudes vis-à-vis the globalization process, the tension between the national dimension of politics and the global dimension of the economy is in fact a major component of the current 'structural' crisis of the Left, both in Europe and worldwide. The seminar focuses on three main fields of research: a) The formation of networks and the circulation of information, actors, experiences and expertise within and between the socialist and communist movements, on different scales and with different approaches and geographical focuses (European and Transatlantic as well as East-West, North-South and South-South). This includes the alternative projects of various political currents in their struggles for ideological hegemony.
