The emergence of BIM has remarkably changed the way the construction industry operates. BIM through its extensive digital capability of virtually representing physical and functional characteristics of a built facility creates a shared source of information among the construction project team thereby forming a reliable platform for the decision making process to take place throughout the whole life cycle of the facility. It has shifted the industry from traditional paper based information management processes which typically tend to be cost ineffective, tiresome, error-ridden and time consuming, to automated processes facilitated by sophisticated technology that bring a number of advantages in terms of time, cost, and quality. BIM’s capability of automating measurements through extracting quantities directly from digital building models is its key benefit towards quantity surveyors as it clearly accelerates the traditional estimating process. BIM based estimating can be executed in ...

Research work reported in this paper tackles the communication between processes of both facilities management (FM) and design, showing the effect of such communication on the capability of newly built facilities in supporting organizations. Facilities management and design are seen as two different routes whereby the former starts on with the commencement of the building realisation process while the latter engages in post construction practices. Such a view suggests the existence of a gap between both processes which could influence the level of performance of the built facility and consequently the facilities management measures that would then be warranted. Therefore, the aim has been to reveal the distant relationship between facilities management and design as well as to unveil the FM potential in enhancing design decisions for achieving better performing facilities. Various factors leading to the aforementioned gap and reasons for bridging it have been presented. It was deduc...

In light of recent technological advancements over the decades especially with Information Technology (IT), the ‘Building Information Modelling’ (BIM) is one of those advancements that have attracted significant attention in UK construction industry. The UK government has acknowledged this trend and is joining the radical movement of adopting BIM by also making it a prerequisite for all those involved in public sector projects to have BIM ready by 2016. For Quantity Surveying (QS) profession, BIM presents huge challenges and opportunities, particularly in the area of cost estimating and quantity take-off. BIM offers the capability to automatically generate quantity take-offs and measurement directly from a digital model of a building, a process that traditionally is very time consuming for quantity surveyors. However, there is little evidence that BIM is systematically introduced in quantity surveying profession in UK largely due to majority of the BIM based cost estimating or take-...

Research works on the causes of business failure as well as tools on the predictability of business failure has received considerable attention in finance literature due to the 2007 recession. In 2009, the UK insolvency rate hit a record high of 270,000 i.e. 11.9% death rate. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) reports that, this is the first time business deaths have outnumbered business births since the year 2000. Across industries, the construction industry in 2009 recorded the highest number of business deaths in a single year with over 44,000 company bankruptcies. The aim of this research is to develop a model that gives construction companies in distress a likelihood of success at recovery. Based on a literature review, 52 factors were found to be the causes of business failure in the construction industry. However, the Input and Output model suggests that, while some factors are determinants, others are indicators or symptoms of business failure. It was found that the top...
