IITF, headquartered in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, is a research and technology transfer institute dedicated to advancing tropical forestry on insular, national, and international levels.
Scientists, professional, technical and manager staff are conducting research, providing technical assistance, and aiding with technology transfer through the Institute's three major work programs:
The Institute has a long history of research, dating back to the 1920s with the establishment of large-scale trial plantings in El Yunque National Forest with both introduced and native tree species.
IITF's State, Private and Tribal Forestry provides professional, technical, and financial assistance to state agencies, universities, and non-profit organizations within Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands
From 1939 till this day, the IITF Library has been sustaining scientific inquiry about tropical forests, their conservation, and management around the world.
