A reflection on Psychology on the American continent brings out important elements through which we can uncover the conditions for Critical Psychology in this part of the world. At the same time, it points to the future that this profession may have in its engagement with everyday life and social issues historically constituted and difficult to be solved. The history of the American continent, including the different economic and political positions from north to south, and the tensions, conflicts and consequences that exist to the present day, forged Psychology and left its marks, especially in professional practice. The aim of this chapter, to reflect on the critical psychology in the ‘American’ countries, will not be complete. The choice made here represents a particular position from which we can understand what the Americas are and how Psychology developed in this part of the world.

Poverty is part of the everyday life in Brazil and for many years has been neglected by Psychology as a central theme for training and practice in the area. It was with the admission of psychologists into the public health and care system that this issue became difficult for the professional practice. Without understanding how to deal with poverty, professionals began to question the relationship between psychology and social inequalities, as well as how to deal with this social condition of life. The objective of this chapter is to reflect on poverty and social inequality, from a critical reading of life in capitalism, discussing from the Brazilian perspective R. Wilkinson and K. Pickett’s thesis that egalitarian societies are better for all people, from a study with rich countries. With this reflection, it is necessary to point out ways to a clear political position of Psychology as a body of knowledge and a profession that responds to the subjective demands of poverty.

The aim of the study was to investigate the training and practice of the internship supervisor in the field of Educational Psychology. The research was carried out through semi-structured interviews with six internship supervisors. Data was collected into three groups, as follows: characteristics of the supervisor (emphasis on the importance of his/her personal and professional background); relationship with the working setting (knowledge on curriculum structure and on the relationship between field activities and supervision); and training possibilities for the psychologist (emphasis on the potential of the field to understand the reality and intervention). The results suggest that the supervisor profile, national educational legislation, policies for the expansion of undergraduate courses, night undergraduate courses, and the workload are specific conditions required to become a supervisor. Thus, the integration of training-practice is important for the professional supervisor.

Considering Psychology in Latin America a colonized profession and science, the challenge has been to promote actions and knowledge that enable the confrontation of people and groups to the adverse conditions of life, as well as to strengthen the social organizations that militate for the conquest of basic rights. The Critical and Community Perspective of Psychology presented by Tod Sloan's work, his commitment to the development of organized and strong people and groups has been the path we have sought to develop. Challenges to be overcome within and outside the profession in Brazil make the absence of Tod intense and irreparable and his work an indispensable instrument for those who desire Psychology as an scientific, politic and professional instrument to be at the service of the real needs of people and groups.

This chapter intends to review the trajectory of a profession that was instituted and consolidated in a dictatorial political regime, began to be reviewed and criticized in its genesis and ethical commitments with the majority of the Brazilian population. This review goes through the history of training, professional exercise and scientific production of a research group that assumed a critical perspective with an emancipating horizon in their daily work. The proposal involves an analysis of the historical milestones determining the process of professional identity and involvement with a specific field of professional activity-the Brazilian public school. Psychology in Education has an important role for the prevention and promotion of the integral development of children in the school space, together with teachers and families. This field, which integrates the educational process and the community insertion, brings a challenge to Psychology. From a historical-critical perspective and the theoretical and methodological foundations of action-participation research, the commitment to this production is to ensure the right of all children to fully develop to the fullest of their potentialities.
