Josephine Woll, Professor of Russian at Howard University, died on 12 March 2008 at the age of only 57.1 Her untimely death was a loss not only to her family and friends but to film scholars worldwide. Woll, who published extensively in both Russian literature and Russian cinema, was best known for her 2001 monograph Real Images: Soviet Cinema and the Thaw (London: I.B. Tauris). To reintroduce Dombrovskii to die English-speaking academic audience, Doyle begins with a discussion of the writer's life and dien turns to an analysis of his literary work. Chapter 1 provides an account of Dombrovskii's childhood and youth in Moscow and traces his experience as a victim of Stalinism in labor camps and exile in Central Asia. In this chapter, Dombrovskii emerges as a highly intelligent, well-educated, and unconventional young man of outstanding personal integrity. Chapter 2 further elaborates Dombrovskii's rich personal qualities: kindness, integrity, optimism, humanity, love of people, as well as his impressive erudition, intellect, and great love of and dedication to literary work.

This forum has attracted six richly varied responses to Larry Charles's film Borat. That Slavic Review would bring together, among others, a political scientist, an anthropologist, a historian, and two ethnographers (if I discern their fields correctly) to discuss a Hollywood film attests both to the journal's vitality and to the film's skill in marshalling interesting questions. In light of the range of issues raised here, my comments attempt, with inconsistent success, to restrict themselves to the questions broached in the preceding essays, rather than supplying an altogether new line of argument.
