Ab Imperio

Новости всегда приходят извне, от взгляда стороннего рецензента всегда ждешь неожиданностей. Хотя бы потому,что трансформация “моей” книги в объект “чужого” анализа позволяет ощутить – теперь уже на себе, – как работают те самые интерпретационные и аналитические приемы, с помощью которых создавалась книга. Избирательность чтения, прихотливость ассоциаций, риторические преувеличения, политические предпочтения, теоретические склонности,этнографический опыт, биографические особенности – эти (и многие другие) “фильтры”, которые помогают просеивать и структурировать бесконечные интервью, полевые заметки, архивные документы и собранныепубликации, используются рецензентами уже для реорганизации моегособственного текста. Превратившись в своего рода этнографический материал, книга оказывается поводом, переходным объектом, на основе которого рецензенты выстраивают свои собственные практики перевода моего текста на свой язык. Как и любой перевод, эти рецензии строятся на операциях смещения и сгущения: конденсация смысла требует жертв. Но жертвы эти оправданны: реконтекстуализация книги, предпринятая участниками форума, дала мне возможность увидеть проблемные точки, которых я раньше не замечал.

На основі проведено аналізу доведено, що публікація матеріалів в журналі «Ab іmperio» про українську мову зазвичай подана в негативно викривленій оптиці та є втручанням у внутрішню політику України. Зокрема, в російськоцентричних статтях висвітлено ідею про «позитивну дискримінацію» та про «недостатньо репресивну політику» щодо перебування України у складі СРСР, що спростовано на державному рівні та засвідчено численними мовознавчими, історичними, етнографічними українськими матеріалами.

Мета розвідки – простежити російськоцентричну та (як антитезу) українськоцентричну версії поняття «мова» на основі міжнародного журналу «Ab imperio». Метод контрастивного аналізу дозволяє з’ясувати ідеологічне та державотвірне наповнення українського питання.

Умотивовано, що публікація документів про мовну ситуацію України в Гарвардських студіях, які аналізує часопис, містить чимало сумнівних аспектів, наприклад, про системну близькість української та російської мов, про суржик як про результат субнорми, про важливість російськомовної спадщини Т. Шевченка. У публікаціях журналу є матеріали про єдину мову, віру та назву «Русь», яка спільна для українців та росіян. Такі статті є руйнівними для українського мовного простору та не дозволяють показати величі України як держави з волелюбними князями та гетьманами, як самобутньої країни з міцними традиціями, сильною волею, національною історією. Важливо, що російськоцентричну позицію про спільні терени та мову для росіян та українців заперечили видатні українські вчені, наприклад, М. Грушевський, О. Потебня, І. Франко, В. Даниленко тощо. Українськоцентрична позиція в тексті статті підтверджена наявністю пам’яток від ХІ–ХІІ ст. та численними матеріалами, які показують соборницькі прагнення українців і є важелем утвердження державницького статусу української мови.

On the basis of the analysis, it was proved that the publication of materials about Ukrainian language in the journal «Ab imperio» is usually presented in negatively distorted optics and is an interference with the domestic policy of Ukraine. In particular, the Russian-centric articles covered the idea of «positive discrimination» and «not sufficiently repressive policy» regarding the existence of Ukraine in the USSR, which was refuted at the state level and attested by numerous Ukrainian linguistic, historical and ethnographic materials.

The purpose of the article is to trace the Russian-centric and (as the antithesis) Ukrainian-centric version of the concept «language» based on the international journal «Ab imperio». The method of contrast analysis allows to find out the ideological and state-building content of the Ukrainian question.

It is motivated that the publication of documents on the language situation of Ukraine in the Harvard studios, which analyzes the journal, contains many doubtful aspects, for example, the systematic closeness of the Ukrainian and Russian languages, the Surzhyk (mixed Russian-Ukrainian dialect) as a result of the sub-norm, the importance of the Russianspeaking heritage of T. Shevchenko. The publications of the magazine contain materials about the common language, religion and name Rus’, which is common for Ukrainians and Russians. Such articles are destructive to the Ukrainian linguistic space and do not allow to show the grandeur of Ukraine as a state with freedom-loving princes and hetmans, as a distinctive country with strong traditions, strong-willed people and national history. It is important that the Russiancentric position on common ground and language for Russians and Ukrainians was rejected by prominent Ukrainian scholars, for example, M. Hrushevsky, O. Potebnya, I. Franko, V. Danylenko, and others. In the text of the article the Ukrainian-centric position is confirmed by the existence of monuments from the XI-XII centuries and numerous materials that show the Ukrainians’ synodic aspirations and are the leverage of establishing of the state status of Ukrainian language.

Розглядові українського питання на сторінках “Ab imperio” та аналізові термінів асиміляторська політика та політика позитивної дискримінації. Основою роботи є контрастивний метод дослідження, що з’ясовує відмінність українськоцентричної та російськоцентричної позиції щодо визначальних номенів.

Доведено, що стрижневі лексеми дискримінація (позбавлення прав у певної частини людей) та імперія (одне зі значень – держава, що має колонії) автори російськоцентричного журналу “Ab imperio” вживають здебільшого з позитивною конотацією. Вмотивовано, що термін політика позитивної дискримінації (позитивної дії) (автори – Т. Мартін, С. Рум’янцев) та імперія позитивної дії (автор – П. Блітстайн (P. Blitstein)) є оксимороном, тобто поєднуванням непоєднуваного, на зразок щасливе вбивство, або щасливе рабство. Термін асиміляція – це уподібнення, тому єдино можливий термін щодо політики СРСР – це асиміляторська політика, яка відбувалася з метою творення “єдіного со вєтського народу”. Саме асиміляторська політика була домінантною і в мовному (уподібнення словникового складу мови, уподібнення правописної системи), і в політичному плані (організований Голодомор 1932–1933, переселення українців на неукраїнські території, масовий обмін спеціалістами, мішані шлюби, російські школи тощо). Прикметно, що деякі вчені (Д. Сталюнас та C. Величенко) подають термін часткова асиміляція. Асиміляторської мовної політики часів царської Росії та СРСР зазнали не лише Україна, Білорусь, Казахстан та Литва, а також Грузія, Вірменія, Азербайджан, у яких було в корені знищено їхній націоналізм.

Отже, спотворення суті визначальних термінів у журналі “Ab imperio” руйнує соборницькі настрої українців, формує неправильне розуміння української ідентичности, культурно та ідеологічно узалежнює Україну від Москви.

The article is devoted to the consideration of the Ukrainian issue on the pages of the magazine “Ab imperio” and the analysis of the terms Assimilationary Policy and Positive Discrimination Policy. The basis of the work is a contrastive method of research, which allows finding out the difference between the Ukrainian-centric and Russian-centric positions regarding the determinant terms.

It has been proved that such core tokens as discrimination (deprivation of rights by a certain part of people) and empire (one of the values is a state that has colonies) are mostly used by the authors of the Russian-centric magazine “Ab imperio” with a positive connotation. It is argued that the terms Policy of Positive Discrimination (positive action) (authors – T. Martin, S. Rumyantsev) and Empire of Positive Action (author – P. Blitstein) are oxymora, that is, a combination of unrelated, such as happy murder or happy slavery. The term Assimilation is an analogy, so the only possible term for the policy of the USSR is an Assimilationary Policy that was designed to create a “single Soviet people”. It was the assimilationary policy that was dominant both in linguistic (similarity of vocabulary, similarity of the spelling system), and in political terms (Famishment 1932 –1933 organized, resettlement of Ukrainians to non-Ukrainian territories, mass exchange of specialists, mixed marriages, Russian schools, etc.). It is noteworthy that some scholars (D. Staliunas and S. Velychenko) submit the term Partial Assimilation. Not only Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Lithuania, but also Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, where their nationalism was completely destroyed, have undergone an assimilationary language policy of Tsarist Russia and the USSR.

Thus, the distortion of the essence of the defining terms in the magazine “Ab imperio” destroys the synodic sentiments of Ukrainians, forms a misunderstanding of Ukrainian identity, culturally and ideologically makes Ukraine dependent from Moscow.

SUMMARY:This article revisits Joseph Stalin’s infamous 1950 critique of Nikolai Marr’s controversial linguistic theory as a “linguistic turn,” to borrow a modern concept. The authors argue that this was literally a shift in the language describing social diversity, rather than a purely ideological campaign as earlier studies suggested. Stalin explicitly insisted on the academic nature of his intervention, which was quite banal in terms of its theoretical input, reproducing standard theses of classic linguistic theory from prerevolutionary textbooks. One aspect, however, was both theoretical and original: the elaborate attack on the concept of “crossing” (skreshchenie) of languages as the driving force of linguistic processes, the central and most stable element of the evolving theory of Nikolai Marr and his disciples.By reviewing the intellectual context of the forming of Marr’s theory during the first two decades of the twentieth century (including cases of physical anthropology, archaeology, and nonclassical linguistics), the article claims that Nikolai Marr’s scholarly pursuits were but a specific case of rethinking and constructing the language of hybridity. Modern social sciences in Russia have produced a distinct metalanguage to describe and analyze the complex diversity of imperial situation. “Hybridity” was the central trope of this metalanguage, or rather its equivalents at the time – “mixing” (smeshenie) and “crossing” (skreshchenie) – insofar as “hybridity” had not yet entered the Russian vocabulary. It is in this sense that “hybridity” is discussed in this article: as a language of self-description in the imperial situation (category of practice) and as an element of the analytical language of the project of modern imperial social sciences, rather than a direct importation of the concept of hybridity from contemporary postcolonial scholarship (as used by Homi Bhabha and others).The emergence of scholarly models that explicitly used the trope of hybridity and perceived hybridity as a foundation of the norm (rather than a marginal condition of deviation from pure forms) is characterized here as the late imperial epistemological revolution. This epistemological revolution became possible and had potential in the context of the imperial situation and in the ideologically pluralistic regime of the late empire. It was already exhausted by the late 1920s, having received support from neither the hegemonic Soviet discourse nor from the subaltern Eurasianist or Soviet national and anticolonial projects. Methodological constructivism and hybridity as a whole became obsolete as survivals of the unstable and limited pluralism of the New Economic Policy era. Their final marginalization in the USSR was just a question of time, given the consolidation of the Stalinist regime throughout the 1930s and the stake on the Russian nation as the official Staatsvolk. The upheaval of World War II delayed the official correction of the metalanguage of social hybridity based on the controversial Marrist linguistic theory of “crossing,” until Stalin’s “linguistic turn” of 1950 formally established the foundations of the literally “counterrevolutionary” episteme of “simple things” and the project of the ideological state based on that episteme.Статья обращается к печально знаменитому труду Сталина о языкознании 1950 г., предлагая рассматривать его критику пресловутого “марризма” буквально как “языковой поворот” (используя современный термин). В отличие от предшественников, авторы доказывают, что речь идет буквально о смене языка описания социального разнообразия, а не просто об идеологической кампании. Хотя Сталин специально подчеркивал академическую природу своего памфлета, большинство лингвистов согласно с оценкой его суждений как банальных, заимствованных, главным образом, из дореволюционных учебников по языкознанию. Не представляя научной лингвистической ценности, один аспект сталинского выступления, тем не менее, имел важное теоретическое значение. Речь идет о подробной и последовательной критике марристской идеи “скрещения” языков как движущей силе лингвистических процессов, которая оставалась центральным элементом “нового учения о языке” Николая Марра и его последователей, несмотря на все ревизии его за три десятилетия.Анализ интеллектуального контекста формирования теории Марра в первой четверти ХХ в. (включая такие разные дисциплины, как физическая антропология, археология или неклассическая лингвистика) приводит авторов к выводу о том, что научные штудии Марра являлись лишь частным случаем осмысления и разработки научного языка гибридности. SUMMARY:The article traces the evolution of Ukrainian nationalism from the end of 2013 to the end of 2014 under the influence of mass protests against the antidemocratic regime of President Yanukovych (Euromaidan) and Russia’s intervention into Crimea and Donbas. The term “nationalism” is used in the article in a broad sense encompassing elite ideology and politics as well as mass feelings and identities. The analysis of elite “nationalism” is based on a close reading of Facebook posts and other texts of the protest activists, and mass discourse is reconstructed with the help of sociological surveys. The author argues that democratic protest against the Yanukovych regime included a nationalistic element articulated as Ukrainian liberation from Russian dictate. He also shows that the transition from peaceful to violent protest was accompanied by an appropriation of the tradition of armed nationalist resistance to the Soviet occupation of Ukraine after World War II. This appropriation, however, was not limited exclusively to ethnic Ukrainians – it reflected and reinforced a rejection of the Soviet mythology of collaborationism of Ukrainian nationalists of the past with the Nazis. At the same time it made evident the deeply inclusive nature of modern Ukrainian anti-imperial nationalism, the most obvious proof of which is the support it enjoys among Ukrainian Jews or even among Jews who have preserved their ties to the country since leaving Ukraine. Russian aggression further contributed to the rise of inclusivity of Ukrainian nationalism, which now embraces many Russian and Russian-speaking citizens. Being alienated from Russia as a state and even as a people by Russia’s aggressive politics, these citizens nevertheless do not exhibit a similar alienation from the Russian language. Hence the new border between Ukrainians and Russians is political rather than linguistic. In the author’s view, this fact confirms the inclusive nature of Ukrainian identity and the nationalism that contributes to its formation.Статья Володымыра Кулыка посвящена эволюции украинского национализма в конце 2013 г. и на протяжении 2014 г. под влиянием массовых протестов против антидемократического режима президента Януковича, ставших известными как Евромайдан, и последующей российской интервенции в Крыму и на Донбассе. Понятие “национализм” употребляется здесь в широком смысле, включающем не только идеологию и политику элит, но и чувства и идентичности масс. Элитный уровень автор анализирует на материале постов в Фейсбуке и других текстов активистов протестного движения и последующей кампании защиты Украины от российской агрессии, а массовый – на материале опросов общественного мнения. Он показывает, что демократический протест против режима Януковича содержал националистический элемент освобождения Украины от российского диктата, а переход от ненасильственного протеста к насильственному сопровождался приятием традиции вооруженного националистического сопротивления советской оккупации Украины после Второй мировой войны. Не ограничиваясь этническими украинцами, это приятие отражает и вместе с тем стимулирует, с одной стороны, отказ от советского мифа о коллаборационизме украинских националистов, а с другой – инклюзивный характер современного антиимперского украинского национализма, который поддерживают, например, евреи, проживающие в Украине или уехавшие из нее, но чувствующие причастность к ее судьбе. Российская агрессия способствовала дальнейшему усилению инклюзивного украинского национализма, приобщая к нему многих русских и русскоязычных граждан, которые ощутили большую привязанность к Украине и отчуждение от России – как государства или как народа. Вместе с тем отчуждение от России не привело к массовому отчуждению от русского языка, т. е. новая граница между украинцами и русскими является скорее политической, нежели языковой, что подтверждает инклюзивность украинской идентичности и направленного на ее усиление национализма.

SUMMARY:There has been an increasing scholarly interest in the role of history commissions and historians in the processes of truth-seeking, reconciliation, and mitigation of conflicts between groups divided by the past. Since the early 1990s, several official commissions and a working group of historians have been created in Ukraine to mediate memory-based conflict between supporters and opponents of the recognition at the national level of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). The article studies the efforts of the working group of historians on the OUN-UPA activity drawing on the academic literature on truth and historical reconciliation commissions.Резюме:История комиссий национального примирения и урегулирования конфликтной памяти о прошлом вызывает растущий интерес исследователей. С начала 1990-х гг. в Украине были сформированы несколько официальных комиссий и рабочая группа историков, на которые возлагалась задача поиска компромисса между сторонниками и противниками полной реабилитации Организации украинских националистов (ОУН) и Украинской повстанческой армии (УПА). Статья посвящена деятельности рабочей группы историков, оценивавшей деятельность ОУНУПА. История украинской рабочей группы вписана в более широкий историографический контекст изучения подобных комиссий в других странах.

This essay contains a series of observations on the emergence of transnational history as an academic enterprise and as a political practice. Choi Chatterjee uses examples from her personal life to illustrate certain global patterns that have gained prominence in the recent decades, especially since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. She has also drawn upon her experiences as a faculty member at an urban university in Los Angeles that caters to a student body that is primarily composed of immigrants and members of the working class. Chatterjee argues that transnational history is more than a version of elite cosmopolitanism; it has the capacity to unite diverse constituencies around the globe in a shared quest for self-knowledge, community building, and environmentalism.
